Farr 30 Bowsprit
A look at our new removable, IRC-optimized bowsprit for the Farr 30.
Farr Magazine — Spring 2016 4
With the recent onset of new one design sportboats around the
30ft. size, there is a renewed desire to keep older race boats active
and competitive in mixed fleets. Several race circuits, such as the
High Performance 30 Class circuit, have been created to provide an
avenue for new sport boats to compete outside of their one design
classification. These race circuits cater to newer boats and have entry
requirements that can prevent older designs from competing.
Earlier this year, Farr Yacht Design was commissioned to design and
engineer a removable, IRC optimized bowsprit for the Farr 30 to
modernize the boat, and enable it to enter the HP30 Class. The bowsprit
had to be light, yet strong, and ensure that the boat could be reverted
back to one design configuration. A length of 1.77m was chosen
after evaluating similar boats and determining that the increased
downwind boat speed eclipsed the induced rating penalty. The
bowsprit’s cross sectional shape was derived from FYD’s proprietary
formula that minimizes aerodynamic drag without compromising
structural rigidity. 3D modeling tools were used to ensure that the
bowsprit would conform perfectly to the bow geometry. FEA studies
were performed to optimize the pre-preg carbon laminate stack and
create a light and robust solution. The tackline is routed through
existing hardware on the bow, reducing the amount of additional
hardware required. A single bolt per side attaches the bowsprit to the
hull; the bowsprit is easily removed so that the boat can get back into
its one design configuration.
The Farr 30 bowsprit project is an excellent example of FYD’s consulting
services. Our office is unique in its position within the marketplace,
because all of the knowledge, experience, and tools required to
design, optimize and engineer a project from start to finish are located
in-house. This allows customers to approach FYD with racing and
rating optimization requests, post-production layout updates, and
structural repairs without involving multiple parties. The combination
of exceptional service and proven results makes FYD the obvious
choice for your consulting needs.
Design Update
Farr Magazine — Spring 2016 6
Design № 801
Fast 40+
Farr Yacht Design has created a FAST 40+ design that will lead the fleet in 2017
and define the direction of the class going forwards. Starting from a blank slate,
our design 801 is a FAST 40+ created with advanced tools, to create an innovative
design that is optimised for the UK class circuit. Each component and parameter
of the design is balanced within the rest of the total design package to produce the
best overall performance in the expected racing conditions and format. This design
is optimized to the newly finalized 2017 FAST 40+ class rule and Solent conditions.
The refined, high stability/low drag hull shape is integrated with advanced deck and
structural design.
The FAST 40+ class rule presents fertile ground for design development and
optimisation. The class parameters were positioned to include existing high
performance 40 foot boats. Now that the rule limits have been formalized and racing
has begun, FYD has taken advantage of the opportunity to create an entirely new
design without restricting ourselves to old hull shapes or unnecessary restrictions.
The hull form we have developed for this design has been crafted from the ground
up to reflect the specific requirements of the FAST 40+ rule and the conditions
anticipated for a Solent-focused event schedule. The shape itself is the product of an
extensive computational fluid dynamic based optimisation study using our state-ofthe-art
Integrated Design-space Exploration and Optimisation System [IDEOS] that
automates a suite of in-house simulation and performance prediction resources.
The IDEOS system allows us to complete an automated exploration of the design
space through the evaluation of hundreds of design variants.
Our studies of crew position have been central to the deck development. The open
cockpit, centralized pit work station and deck geometry maximize efficient handling
with minimized weight, windage and pitch gyradius. It takes an aggressive approach
to maximize the benefit of moving crew weight both longitudinally and transversely.
Farr 280 One Design
This spring, the U.S. Farr 280 OD fleet has been sailing in the southeast, bringing the class
back to familiar venues and continuing to attract new owners.
In January, Farr 280s raced at Quantum Key West Race Week. Chris Pesch’s “Swordfish”
team took first place among Farr 280s racing in ORC 2. He received his boat shortly
before racing and debuted in style. Racing was close among the three teams, with Tate
Russack’s “Diesel” and “Swordfish” tied going into the third day. On Thursday, Pesch’s
team definitively came out in front, with three straight first place finishes.
In April, racing continued at Sperry Charleston Race Week. “Farr Yacht Sales Powered by
College of Charleston” took first place overall among the Farr 280s competing at Sperry
Topsider Charleston Race Week. The team was helmed by Stefano Peschiera, a junior at
College of Charleston, who will be competing for Peru in the Rio 2016 Olympics in the
Laser class.
Racing was called off on the first day due to heavy breeze and sea state in the course
area - to the south and east of the entrance to Charleston Harbor. One race was sailed on
the second day in 20-to-30kt. breeze with 5-to-7ft. seas. Peter Sulick’s “Red” came first
among the Farr 280s in challenging conditions.
Despite the challenging conditions, Sulick was impressed at how the boat handled
and performed in the conditions. “I love the way the boat tracks through the water,
particularly in big waves and big wind. We were going over 20kts. out in the ocean. It was
the most fun I’ve had in a sailboat in years.”
The final day, three races were sailed on the Wando River. “FYS Powered by College of
Charleston” took control of the race into the first downwind leg of the first race.
Later in the month, Sulick brought “Red” north for the Helly Hansen Annapolis NOODs,
where his team placed 2nd in PHRF.
Attention turns to the U.K. later in the spring and early summer, with several events
scheduled, including the Vice Admiral’s Cup in May and IRC Nationals in June. In several
events this summer, the Farr 280s will race in the new High Performance 30 Class, which
aims to bring owners together to race their performance one designs around 30ft.
Southern Wind 82
Southern Wind recently celebrated the delivery of Ammonite, the third yacht in the
82ft. miniseries. Marcus Blackmore, Ammonite’s Australian owner, has long been a
passionate sailor. Marcus wanted a yacht for racing and cruising with, in his own
words, “a sexy body and a highly competitive soul.”
The yacht is both highly customized and the perfect combination of her predecessors:
the cruising-oriented SW82 RS Feelin’ Good, which has sailed over 11,000 miles in 6
months, and the racing-orientated SW82 FD Grande Orazio, which has successfully
claimed top honors in some of the world’s most important superyacht regattas.
Ammonite features a raised saloon with two hull windows on each side of the saloon,
270° panoramic coachroof windows and a transparent coachroof top window that
bring a flood of light into the interior.
The yacht has completed her maiden voyage, a 7000 mile trip from Cape Town to
Sardinia, where Ammonite is planning to race in the 2016 edition of the Loro Piana
Superyacht Regatta in Porto Cervo in June. This prestigious race will actually only be
a trial run in anticipation of the real competition Ammonite is planning to face at the
Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, also in Porto Cervo in September.
After her Mediterranean summer, Ammonite will sail to the Caribbean together with
the ARC fleet to continue competing in the prestigious Caribbean regatta circuit. But
before she heads west, Ammonite will make a splash at the Monaco Yacht Show in
September where she will have her world premiere.
Infiniti 60
The Infiniti 60 is a high performance racer cruiser that combines modern styling with
the latest in high tech construction methods and design technology. With a lowprofile
deck and expansive cockpit and extensive use of teak, plus Dynamic Stability
Systems, the Infiniti 60 matches elegance and performance.
The hull design combines a moderate beam with light displacement to provide
generous righting moment. Since the yacht is designed to be sailed by limited
crew, the boat has a wide chine and moderate topside flare to achieve the targeted
form stability and maximize the available crew righting moment. The deck beam is
carried aft to the transom to maximize crew hiking moment when the crew shifts aft
in strong winds, particularly when reaching and running.
The very low drag hull form can be driven efficiently by a reasonable sailplan, even in
light air. When combined with the dynamic stability of the DSS and a deep draft bulb
keel, it will achieve unrivaled performance in moderate to strong breezes.
The deck geometry is a key stylistic element in the boat concept and is designed to
allow the sailing crew to perform their required tasks in the fastest, most efficient
manner possible. The prime focus for the layout is for premier regattas with a
reduced crew of 6 to 8. The boat features an expansive cockpit with exposed,
powered primary winches. Where not critical for efficient sailing operations, line
runs are hidden from view with powered sail handling systems utilized throughout.
The concept is arranged with twin retractable DSS foils that can be operated from
the helm station.
The Infiniti 60 is built upon the same core DNA as the Infiniti 53 – both are designed
to provide unrivaled performance using the latest in performance enhancing
technology. While the Infiniti 53 is focused on offshore distance races, the Infiniti 60
is targeted at the racer/cruiser market with a modern and stylish interior developed
in concert with Design Unlimited.
Design specifications are being finalized now in preparation for a build start later
this year. Find out more about this design and request an informational package by
Production Cruising Line
Throughout Farr Yacht Design’s history we have partnered with many of the world’s
leading production boat builders to create hundreds of successful production sailing
boats. Almost all of these products have been done in partnership with design teams
from the builders themselves, and together with other third party design groups in
very team oriented projects.
Recently we undertook an internal project to consider how we would approach
the design challenges for a complete line of production sailboats, and within that
line, the centerpiece of the actual design work. Part of our internal challenge was to
work as one team representing the investor, the builder, the total design group, the
production team, and finally the end client.
A 16m centerpiece of the line was selected as a sensible place to convey the concepts
we developed for styling, naval architecture, engineering, and production logic. This
concept work contains innovative solutions for maximizing tooling usability for
minimal expense, flexible solutions for both layout and styling, and innovations in
final assembly. All of these goals are met in a single cohesive concept solution, which
we believe is a relatively fresh way to look at the challenges involved in placing a
successful line of production cruising boats, and truly great products within that line.
The concept work was created to serve as a discussion piece together with potential
future partners. We welcome the opportunity to share this work. Please contact us to
arrange an opportunity to share this exciting concept work.
FYS Named Exclusive Agent for Infiniti 53 and 46 R
in Americas, UK & Ireland
Farr Yacht Sales has been named by Infiniti Yachts as the exclusive
agent for the Infiniti 46 R and Infiniti 53 in the Americas, the UK and
Ireland. Both yachts will be built by McConaghy Boats and feature
Dynamic Stability Systems (DSS).
Adding FYS as an exclusive agent for the Farr-designed Infiniti 53
gives potential buyers a number of advantages – the experience and
knowledge of FYS and the close relationship with FYD. Buyers have
access to details, drawings, naval architects and engineers to assist
with any questions. They can also take advantage of the growing
brokerage network to sell their current yacht.
Joe Hall, head of Farr Yacht Sales Europe, said, “The Infiniti 53 has
arrived at an auspicious time. The offshore and channel racing scene
has not been this popular for many years. Events like the Rolex Fastnet
Race are closing their entry lists within hours. The Rolex Sydney Hobart
and the RORC Caribbean 600 have had record numbers of entrants.”
The Infiniti 53 will be constructed later this year. It is positioned for
exceptional performance both offshore and inshore. It features
a canting keel, gybing centerline daggerboard and leverages the
dramatic performance advantages available through the DSS system.
Jesse Fielding, head of Farr Yacht Sales Americas, said, “Clearly the
Farr pedigree in the offshore sailing world speaks for itself, in terms
of reliability, performance and value. As an experienced offshore
sailor, I am really excited about bringing the Infiniti product line to the
marketplace.”
McConaghy was recently announced as the builder. Britton Ward, vice
president and senior naval architect at Farr Yacht Design said, “We are
thrilled to be teaming with McConaghy and Infiniti Yachts to bring our
first DSS-equipped design to reality. We have spent months refining
the design and specifications for the Infiniti 53 to create something
extraordinary. By partnering with McConaghy Boats, we are now in
a position to provide a turnkey product with absolutely incredible
performance all built to exacting standards.”
A prototype Infiniti 46 R fitted with a canting keel has been launched in
April. Her British owner has a race schedule planned that includes the
world’s ‘classic 600-milers’ such as the 2016 Rolex Middle Sea Race,
2017 RORC Caribbean 600 and 2017 Rolex Fastnet Race. Production
Infiniti 46 R models, modified with lessons learned from the prototype,
will be built by McConaghy Boats.
Mark Evans, joint managing director of McConaghy Boats, said, “What
I particularly like about the DSS is that it is quite simple, because
with complexity comes a bit of fear from clients. And from a builder’s
perspective, it is easy to put into the boat and to maintain. So given
these aspects, and the huge performance gain, it is a great thing and
this is a fantastic opportunity for us. We believe that putting foils into
boats will become quite standard moving forwards.”
