“Sometimes, we tend to coach too much. What I mean, by that, is we should simplify things.”
Do not get Dessarzin wrong: he is, by nature, a basketball coach. He has been coaching for
most of his life. But, in the midst of the 2009 FIBA Africa Championship, he realised he had
some serious material at hand but too little time to make the game too complex, especially
after a very difficult training camp. Dessarzin knows something about building a winning
team. In 1994, he took the Swiss club of Boncourt in the fourth division and it took him only
nine seasons to turn it into the national champion (in 2003 and 2004). After three relatively
unsuccessful seasons with the French Dijon, he now has the perfect opportunity to bounce
back with Ivory Coast.

It did not take Amagou long to become the coach’s lieutenant on the court last summer at
the FIBA Africa Championship, after which he ended with the unofficial status of “All-Africa
1st team” member. Of all the players Coach Randoald Dessarzin had taken with him to
Libya, Amagou was by far the most experienced. With the French club of Le Mans, where
he originally developed, Pape-Philippe won all the national competitions including the Pro A
championship in 2006. The following season, at the age 21, he spent some quality minutes
in the Euroleague. In 2008, he repeated as a French champion with Nancy, before putting
himself to the test in the tough Greek league with Kavala, where he strengthened his mental
approach. During 2009-10 in Roanne, after US star guard Ralph Mims was sidelined for the
rest of the season, Amagou was promoted to the starting line-up with the shooting duties
and more than lived up to expectations. He played so well that he may have convinced his
coach to grant him the starting spot for this upcoming season. He was also a Pro A All-Star
twice. At the Africa Championship, he led Ivory Coast in scoring (11.4ppg), thanks to his solid
shooting (17-for-42 from the three-point line). He got better and better and was the undisputed
leader in the elimination games (15 points and 3 rebounds against Senegal in quarter-finals,
then 12 points against Cameroon and eventually 18 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the
final game against Angola). Amagou is what is called a “combo guard”. He can play the point
guard spot, create for team-mates and set the tempo or alternatively, he can carry the scoring
burden at the shooting guard spot which he has never been afraid of doing. For years, not
having a specific position on the court had been a problem for Philippe but not anymore now
that the “combo guard” position has become the main weapon for the coach. His size could
be a problem on defence but Amagou can guard a 1.95m player and make his life miserable,
thanks to his quick feet and great sense of anticipation. Although he was born and raised in
France and played for the French U16, U18 and U20 national teams (and even for an unofficial
“B Team”), Amagou is a true son of Africa. His father is from Ivory Coast and his mother
from Senegal. He always takes his role with the ‘Elephants’ very seriously. Philippe is a very
talkative and clever man, very professional, always concerned with team chemistry and the
game-plan - when he enters the court, he is a warrior.

Just a couple of years ago, “Solo” was nothing more than an energizer, an instant scorer, a
specialist of the kamikaze drives and the ill-advised outside shots. A “mad dog” who could
pile up stats as well as hurt his team, although his attitude and good will have never been in
question. “Solo” had to learn what being a point guard meant. Since then, this intelligent player
has finally begun to live up to expectations, and, after the starting playmaker of Roanne got
injured last season, “Solo” was handed the keys of Roanne truck and has just blossomed.
Extremely quick and agile, he is a world class one-on-one player and, even though he
sometime gets carried away, he can do a lot of damage. A great ball stealer and crowd pleaser.

Dessarzin’i yanlış anlamayın. O da doğası gereği bir basketbol antrenörü. Neredeyse tüm

değerli madenlerin olduğunu anladı ama oyunu karmaşıklaştırmak için çok geçti ve çok zorlu
bir hazırlık kampından gelmişlerdi. Dessarzin başarılı bir takım inşa etmeyi iyi biliyor. 1994’de

Antrenör Randoald Dessarzin’in Libya’ya götürdüğü oyuncuların en deneyimlisi Amagou’ydu.
Fransa takımı Le Mans ile gerçek kimliğini buldu ve 2006 Pro A Şampiyonası da dahil olmak
üzere tüm milli müsabakaları kazandı. 2008’de Fransa şampiyonu Nacy ile yoluna devam

2009-10 sezonu esnasında, ABD’li yıldız guard Ralph Mims sezon boyunca saha gerisinde

liderliği eline alarak 42’de 17 üçlük isabet oranıyla oynadı. Her geçen gün biraz devleşti
ve eleme oyunları çeyrek finalinde Senegal’e karşı 15 sayı -3 ribaunt, Kamerun’a karşı 12
sayı ve en sonunda Angola’ya karşı oynadıkları final maçında 18 sayı, 4 ribaunt, 4 asist
ortalamalarına ulaşarak takımın tartışmasız lideri oldu. Amagou “combo guard” kelimesinin
tam karşılığı. Oyun kurucu pozisyonunda da oynayabiliyor, takım arkadaşlarına yardımcı
oluyor ya da şutör guard pozisyonunda da oynayarak sayı üretme sorumluluğunu üstleniyor
ve hiçbir şeyden korkmuyor. Yıllarca sahada belli bir pozisyonunun olmaması Philippe için bir
problem haline gelmişti ama “combo guard” pozisyonu antrenörün ana silahı haline geldiği
için bu sorun da ortadan kalktı. Boyu savunma anlamında sorunlar yaratabiliyor ama Amagou
1.95 cm’lik oyuncuları bile hayatlarını zindana çevirecek kadar iyi savunuyor ve bunu da hızlı
ayaklarına ve sezme gücüne borçlu. Fransa’da doğup büyümesine ve Fransa U16,U18 ve
U20 milli takımlarında ve hatta B Takımları’nda oynamasına rağmen Amagou tam bir Afrikalı.
Babası Fildişi Sahili’nden ve annesi de Senegalli. “Filler” ile ilgili rolünü her zaman ciddiye aldı.
Philippe çok konuşkan, zeki ve profesyonel bir oyuncu. Her zaman takımın kimyasına ve oyun
planına sadık olmuştur. Sahaya indiği an, o artık bir savaşçıdır.

Birkaç yıl öncesine kadar “Solo” bir güç kaynağı, hızlı şutör ve dışarıdan attığı kamikaze
şutlarıyla devleşen bir oyuncudan daha fazlası değildi. Bu “çılgın köpek” istatistikleri alt üst
edebilecek kapasitede. Ama öncelikle iyi bir oyun kurucunun ne demek olduğunu öğrenmeli.
Zeki oyuncu yavaş yavaş beklentileri karşılamaya başladı ve yıldız oyuncu Roanne geçen
sezon sakatlanınca “Solo” onun yerini aldı ve harikalar yarattı. Oldukça hızlı ve atik olan
oyuncu bire bir oyunlarda da çok başarılı ve bazen kendisini çok fazla kaptırarak zarara da
neden olabiliyor. Taraftarları memnun etmeyi biliyor ve çok iyi top çalıyor.
