For Vassilopoulos, the story of his life so far has had many ups and downs. He was a member<br />
of the golden boys of PAOK (together with Mavrokefalidis, Vasiliadis, Apostolidis) and attracted<br />
the interest of the two big Greek teams (Olympiacos and Panathinaikos) five years ago. He<br />
went to Piraeus and after two good seasons, he made a great name as a defensive rock and<br />
as a new age forward. But after that, after the 2007 pick, his career started going downhill<br />
because of a spate of back injuries. During almost every one of the last three seasons, he<br />
has faced serious problems with his back and at one point, doctors even advised him to stop<br />
playing basketball altogether. But he insisted he would continue and after several therapies,<br />
he managed to recover - perhaps not 100% to the Vassilopoulos of old, but still good enough<br />
to fight for a place on the 12 man roster of Greek National Team.<br />

Loukas always used to be called a great talent. As a PAOK player, he was named new<strong>com</strong>er of<br />
the year five seasons ago. He gained European experience playing for Roma and Valencia in<br />
Italy and Spain, and matured during this time. When Olympiacos gave him the chance to play<br />
for a title chasing team, he was unable to rise to the challenge. Sometimes it was the injuries<br />
and other times more experienced players were front of him at the rotation. Consequently,<br />
he started moving around. Two seasons ago with Marousi he produced a real breakthrough<br />
season and was named most improved player of the Greek league but was unable to bounce<br />
on from there. Last season he created some opportunities with the Olympiacos but there<br />
remains a lot for him to give - especially as a near seven footer who is capable of shooting<br />
threes as well as playing in the post with great moves.<br />

If Mavrokefalidis is a real team all-rounder, Vougioukas is the champion. The “Englishman”<br />
grew up with his smallest brother (now playing in the USA) in a basketball environment. After<br />
a season in the Greek second division he followed his dream of playing in the NCAA and<br />
he managed it pretty well. With St Louis, he was the top scorer and rebounder during his<br />
senior season but never made the NBA draft, returning to Greece for Olympiacos. The “Reds”<br />
were supposed to invest in his talent but actually never really did that. They loaned him to<br />
Rethymno, where he was named rookie of the season averaging a double-double in points<br />
and rebounds during his time there. A year afterwards, he went back to Olympiacos spending<br />
most of the time on the bench and last season he played with high flying Panellinios and was<br />
the king of the paint. The most improved player of the season and one of the hot names of the<br />
summer market, Vougioukas has attracted early interest from Maccabi Tel Aviv.<br />

‘’Englishman’’ lakaplı oyuncu en küçük kardeşi ile (şu an Amerika’da oynuyor) basketbol<br />
çevresinde büyüdü. Yunanistan 2. Ligi’nde bir sezon oynadıktan sonra rüyalarını süsleyen NCAA<br />
liginde başarılı bir şekilde yer aldı. Sezon sonunda St. Louis takımında en iyi skor ve ribaund<br />
istatistiklerini elinde bulundurmasına rağmen NBA draft’larını düşünmeden Olimpiyakos takımına<br />
transfer oldu. Olimpiyakos takımı onun yeteneğine yatırım yapmıştı ama hiç yararlanmadı bu<br />
yetenekten. Rethymno takımına kiralandığı sezon içinde sayı ve riboundlarda çiftli sayılara<br />
ulaşarak sezonun çaylağı ünvanını aldı. Bir yıl sonra Olimpiyakos’a geri döndüğünde çoğunlukla<br />
yedek klubesinde geçirdi zamanını. Son sezonunda ise üst sıralara oynayan Panellinios ile iyi bir<br />
sezon geçirdi. Sezonun en çok kendini geliştiren oyuncusu olan Vougioukas, yaz sezonu transfer<br />
piyasasında Maccabi Tel Aviv takımının listesinde.<br />
