FRANCE / FRANSA Nicolas BATUM Height: 2.03 (6-8) Position: Shooting guard / Small forward Date of Birth: 14/12/1988 Place of birth: Pont-L’Evèque, France Club Team 2009-10: Portland Trailblazers (USA-NBA) Career: Le Mans (France Pro A, 2004-08), Portland Trailblazers (USA-NBA, 2008-10). Drafted in the first round of the 2008 NBA draft (#25) by the Portland Trailblazers. Nicolas Batum’s road to stardom has greatly accelerated over the past three years. A European star in all youth categories: winner with the U16 in 2005, winner and MVP with the U18 in 2006 and Silver medallist at the 2007 U19 FIBA World Championship. He made a name for himself during the 2007 Hoop Summit, in which he was a clear MVP. Probably the best European player from the 1988 generation with Italy and Knicks star, Danilo Gallinari, there were some doubts about Nico’s ability to fight for playing time in a tough and sometimes very individual NBA environment. The talent was there, but some journalists were comparing Batum to a dear caught in car headlights. Well, in his very first NBA season, starting 76 of his 79 games played, he turned out to be much more than the “Bambi” that some described him as. Forced into what many have labelled a stupid trip to Portland a few days before the Qualification finals for EuroBasket 2009, to check out a minor shoulder injury, he was perturbed by this 64 hour trip back to Oregon. But Batum is now, in the absence of Mike Piétrus, a key player for a French team short in depth on the wings. Nicolas hurt his shoulder again during the 2009-10 pre-season and needed surgery, which made him miss the first three months of competition. However he came back strongly and by the end of January 2010, he had helped the Trailblazers, plagued with injuries all year, to make the play-offs. Batum scored 31 points against Minnesota on 27th February, and even pushed European star Rudy Fernandez a bit further down Portland’s bench -not a minor achievement. He finished the NBA season averaging double figures (10.1 ppg), adding 3.8 rebounds while shooting nearly 52% from the field. Nicolas’ personal story is quite sad, since his father, Richard Batum, a former pro player in lower divisions, died on a basketball court from aneurismal rupture while Nico was still a child. The story was a kind of secret in his family, or at least not a topic discussed often between Nicolas and his mother. So years later, when Batum was visiting NBA franchises and having medical check-ups, he innocently answered to a question saying his father died from a heart attack. This answer threw open questions about his own health and almost compromised his NBA career. A dream move to the Spurs fell through as he joined the Trail Blazers. Well, we imagine he does not regret to living in Oregon rather than in Texas now, since the young Blazers seem to have a future as bright as Batum’s. Drafted in the first round of the 2003 NBA draft (#21) by the Atlanta Hawks. Diaw’s evolution with the French team has always been a step ahead of his progression with his club team. It proved true again in 2005, when the young forward who had struggled with Atlanta had a memorable tournament at EuroBasket. Diaw was selected for the EuroBasket 2005 First Team and would probably have been the MVP had France beaten Greece in the semis. Following his trade from Atlanta to Phoenix, Diaw became more assertive and was named the Most Improved Player in the NBA in 2005-06. In the playoffs, he took his game to another level by averaging 24.2 points on 52.2 percent shooting during the Western Conference Finals against Dallas. In Phoenix however, his stats did suffer a bit with the return of Amare Stoudemire to the line-up. When he moved to Charlotte at the beginning of 2009, he found in Larry Brown’s system trust and a new energy and intensity, averaging 15.1 points, nearly six rebounds and almost as many assists. A bit frustrated when Stephen Jackson who is not the most team oriented player in the world came into town last fall to take 25 shots per game, Diaw came back strongly towards the end of the season to help Charlotte to its first-ever play-off berth. The ultimate versatile and team player, Diaw can play every single position on the court but he occasionally has “absences” on the court and always irritates coaches, journalists and fans who all know that he could and should have more influence on the game. Diaw is the son of one of the greatest French women players of all time, Elisabeth Riffiod, and of a Senegal high-jump champion, Issa Diaw. He has always been there for the national team, only missing the 2008 qualifying campaign (for EuroBasket 2009), because the Federation was not willing to pay a huge insurance fee. France missed the direct qualification and had to go through the additional qualifying round last summer. There are investments that one will always regret not to having made. Especially since the previous summer, Boris paid himself for most of the insurance “extras” in order to play at EuroBasket 2007. At the beginning of Florent’s career, not too many basketball experts were upbeat about his chances of becoming a top level player. Nevertheless, with a great heart, unbelievable leaping ability and relentless defensive effort, he has proved everybody wrong. According to his various coaches, Florent – older brother of Mickaël – is one of the best defensive players in Europe. The only problem is his unselfishness – and arguably the lack of size for a power forward – has somehow hurt his playing time at various Liga ACB clubs. He may not have that many moves, but his quickness and desire enable him to get his fair share of “garbage” points. Pietrus has been a bit lost in Unicaja, Estudiantes and Pamesa during his first five seasons outside France. However, as far as the national team goes, he has always stepped up. At the 2006 FIBA World Championshipn in Japan, he averaged 9.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest and he has remained productive with the national squad ever since. Some rumours had him going to Charlotte last summer, as Larry Brown, technical adviser or France during the preparation for EuroBasket 2009 was overwhelmed by Flo’s intensity and heart. In the end, that never happened and Florent will probably never join his brother in the NBA. Ali Traoré is probably one of the most gifted inside players in Europe right now. He has the ability to score inside with regularity. 100% ambidextrous, Ali can kill defences on great left handed hooks or little jumpers from four meters taken with his right (or left) hand. When he is on a roll, Traoré is capable of bringing offensive bursts to the floor, as his 12 points in around 15 minutes on the court proved against Finland and Italy in last season’s additional qualifying tournament for EuroBasket 2009. Defence is not the best part of his game, which affected his playing time last summer in Poland. However, after a very impressive 2009-10 season with ASVEL (14.5ppg, 5.4rpg and 57.4% from the field in the Euroleague) and the absence of Ronny Turiaf, Ali will probably play a key role this summer. He averaged 15.6 points per game in the French Pro A and was elected by journalists and players as the MVP of this 2009-10 season. Ian MAHINMI Height: 2.08 (6-10) Position: Power forward / Center Date of Birth: 05/11/1986 Place of birth: Rouen, France Club Team 2009-10: San Antonio Spurs (USA-NBA) Career: STB Le Havre (France-Pro A, 2003-06), Pau-Orthez (France-Pro A, 2006- 07), San Antonio Spurs (USA-NBA (2007), Austin Torros (USA-NBDL, 2007-08 and one game in 2009, on a lend from the Spurs), San Antonio Spurs (USA-NBA (2009- 10). Drafted in the first round of the 2005 NBA draft (#28), by the San Antonio Spurs. When he was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the 2005 NBA draft, the Rouen native was such a surprise pick that it took 45 minutes for the NBA to print a sticker with his name and put it on the draft board. When the Spurs chose him, right after the 2004-05 season, he was averaging 6.0 points and 4.0 rebounds at Le Havre, an average French Pro A team. The next year, this 2.08 meters center, who only started playing basketball at the age of 16, showed great improvement by averaging 9.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting over 56% from the floor with Le Havre. French powerhouse Pau-Orthez offered him a last stop before the NBA, as he was supposed to be the club’s starting center in the Euroleague in 2006-07, but the 20-year-old seemed a bit lost at this level. So Pau signed US center Michael Wright, and as a result, Mahinmi saw very limited playing time (11 mpg). He spent the 2007-08 season with Austin, in the NBA Development League, in which he impressed the Spurs enough to put him into the roster for the 2007-08 season - but an ankle injury did not heal well and almost ruined his 2008-09 season. Back healthy, he was the last name included in the national team for EuroBasket 2009 after coach Collet got a bit tired of the defensive weaknesses of Johan Petro. Fakat ASVEL ile oldukça etkileyici bir 2009-10 sezonu geçirdikten sonra Ronny Turiaf’ın yokluğunu bu yaz aratmayacak gibi görünüyor. Spurs 2004-05 sezonunun hemen ardından onu seçtiğinde, ortalama bir Fransa Pro A takımı olan La HAvre’de 6.0 sayı ve 4.0 ribaunt ortalamalarına sahipti. Basketbola 16 yaşında başlayan 2.08 cm’lik pivot bir sonraki yıl 9.7 sayı ve 5.2 ribaunt ortalamalarına ulaşarak büyük bir gelişim gösterdi ve La Havre’de attığı şutlarda %52’lik bir yüzdeye ulaştı. So Pau Amerikalı pivot Michael Wright ile anlaşmaya vardı ve Mahinmi sahada uzun süre oynama şansı bulamadı. 2007- 08 sezonunu Austin ile geçirdi ve NBA Gelişim Ligi’nde Spurs’un dikkatini çekmeyi başardı ama bileğindeki sakatlık bir türlü geçmedi ve bu tüm sezonuna mal oldu. Tekrar sağlığına kavuştuktan sonra, antrenör Collet Johan Petro’nun savunma alanındaki yetersizliğinden bıkarak 2009 Avrupa Şampiyonası milli takımı kadrosuna Mahinmi’yi son anda dahil etti.
