Ukic could have been the only NBA player of the Croatia National Team. But last January, he
asked to be waived by the Milwaukee Bucks to come back to Europe and play for Euroleague
powerhouse Fenerbahçe Istanbul. At only 25, his talent and his experience make him the
leader of Croatia. Roko-Leni Ukic was born and raised in Split and so naturally he started to
play basketball with KK Split, following in the footsteps of legends like Toni Kukic, Dino Radja
or Zoran Savic. He won the national youth championship twice with the cadet team and was
named MVP of the competition in 2000. He debuted with the senior team that same year, at
the early age of 16. In 2002, he led the Croatian Junior National Team to the Gold medal at the
2002 FIBA Europe U18 Championship with Marko Banic and Marko Tomas. He was drafted in
2005 by the Toronto Raptors in the second round, but decided he was not ready to play in the
NBA. That’s why he joined TAU Vitoria to play both in the Liga ACB and the Euroleague. One
year later, he moved to Barcelona. In 2007, Jasmin Repesa, who was also his coach in the
national team, convinced him to sign with Roma. After being the reserve point guard in Vitoria
and Barcelona, he assumed a starter role in Italy. This experience gave confidence to him and
he decided in 2008 that it was time to play in the NBA. In Toronto, he was the backup to his
former Vitoria teammate Jose Manuel Calderon, averaging only 4.2 points and 2.1 assists in
12 minutes. At the end of his rookie season, he was sent to Milwaukee. But he averaged only
8 minutes per game last season with the Bucks and decided to come back to Europe. He has
played with Croatia in three EuroBasket tournaments as well as the 2008 Olympic Games.
Ukic is a scoring point guard, but also a good playmaker. He is also a reliable defender thanks
to his height and long arms. He still needs to improve his outside shooting.

Zoran Planinic has long been considered one of the most promising players in Europe, but
he is yet to truly reach the high expectations placed on him - even if his game has matured
since he came back from the United States. He originally revealed himself with Cibona Zagreb
and then decided he was ready to play in the NBA. But he spent three seasons on the bench
with the New Jersey Nets behind Jason Kidd and came back to Europe. He then played four
seasons in the Euroleague with Vitoria and CSKA Moscow but couldn’t impose himself as the
leader of these teams. Even with the Croatian National Team, he is now considered more or
less as the back-up of Roko-Leni Ukic, even if he is able to play next to him on the court. His
height allows him to post-up the opposite point guard, but he is also able to drive to the basket
and deliver high quality passes.

Ukic Hırvatistan’ın tek NBA oyuncusu olabilirdi. Fakat geçtiğimiz Ocak ayında Milwaukee
Bucks’dan ayrılıp Euroleague fatihi Fenerbahçe takımında oynaması için teklifi aldı. Henüz
25 yaşındayken yeteneği ve deneyimi onu Hırvatistan’ın lideri konumuna getirdi. Roko-Leni
Ukic Split’de doğup büyüdü ve bu yüzden basketbola KK Split ile başladı ve Toni Kukic,
Dino Radja ve Zoran Savic gibi efsanevi oyuncuların izinden gitti. Aday takımla iki kez Milli
Gençlik Şampiyonasını kazandı ve hatta 2002 yılındaki müsabakanın MVP’si seçildi. Aynı
yıl, henüz 16 yaşındayken bir üst düzey takımda oynadı. 2002’de Hırvatistan yıldızlar milli
takımına, Makro Banic ve MARKO Tomas ile birlikte 2002 FIBA Avrupa U18 Şampiyonasında
altın madalya kazandırdı. 2005 yılında, ikinci turda oynarken Toronto Raptors’dan teklif aldı
fakat henüz NBA’de oynamaya hazır olmadığına karar verdi. Bu yüzden hem Liga ABC’de
hem de Euroleague’de oynamak üzere TAU Vitoria takımıyla anlaşmaya vardı. Bir yıl sonra
Barselona’ya taşındı. 2007’de, aynı zamanda milli takımdan antrenörü de olan Jasmin Repesa
oyuncuyu, Roma ile anlaşma yapmaya ikna etti. Vitoria ve Barselona’da yedek oyun kuruculuk
görevinden sonra İtalya’da iyi bir başlangıç yaptı. Bu deneyim onun kendine güvenini arttırdı

sayesinde, güvenilir bir savunma oyuncusu konumunda. Fakat dışarıdan attığı şutlar üzerinde
biraz daha çalışması gerekiyor.

Zoran Planinic Avrupa’nın en çok umut vaat eden oyuncularından biri olarak görülüyor
ama oyununu, Amerika’dan döndüğünden beri oldukça geliştirmiş olmasına rağmen ondan
beklenenleri gerçekleştirmek için daha çok çalışması lazım. Kendisi ilk defa Cibona Zagreb
ile sahaya çıktı ve NBA’de oynamaya hazır olduğuna karar verdi. Fakat New Jersey Nets ile,
Jason Kidd’in arkasında saha kenarında üç sezon geçirdi ve Avrupa’ya geri döndü. Daha
sonra Euroleague’de Vitoria ve CSKA Moskova ile dört sezon oynadı ama bu takımlarda çok
varlık gösteremedi. Hırvatistan Milli Takımı’nda bile, yan yana oynamalarına karşın Roko-Leni
Ukic’in yedeği olarak görülüyor. Boyu sayesinde rakip takımın oyun kurucusunu egale etmeyi
başarabiliyor ve aynı zamanda potaya kadar gidip iyi paslar verebiliyor.
