Xiaoxu LI
Height: 2.07 (6-9)
Position: Center
Date of birth: 05/06/90
Place of birth: Liaoning, China
Club Team 2009-10: Liaoning Panpan Hunters
Career: Liaoning Panpan Hunters (China-CBA, 2005-10).
Having turned 20 earlier this summer, Li Xiaoxu is considered in China as one of the hottest young
talents around. He plays his club basketball with Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league
side Liaoning Hunters, where he has been since the age of 15. In the summer of 2007, he was
included in China’s team for the U19 World Championship team, which finished 12th. Playing less
than 19 minutes per game, he nevertheless managed to average 8 points and 4.9 rebounds per
game in a tournament that saw his form peak in the final three games. In the ensuing season,
17-year-old Li helped Liaoning reach the CBA final, which they lost to the Guandong Southern
Tigers, the league’s most successful team in recent years. As the youngest player of China’s silver
medal winning 2009 FIBA Asia Championship team, Li got his first taste of top flight international
basketball. In the opening round, in 20 minutes of action against Qatar, Li hit all attempts from
two-point range and from the free -throw line, while also grabbing 8 rebounds. However, as the
Championship drew on and China progressed, his playing time dipped with experience being
favoured over youth. Having just completed his fifth year with Liaoning, who he once again helped
secure a place in the playoffs, Li is according to many ready to make the step from young aspiring
talent to that of a key player for China. At 209cm, Li possesses a solid all-round play. While his
scoring percentages can still vary significantly from game to game, he has gained in consistency.
His rebounding skills are probably the strongest part of his game.
Wei LIU
Height: 1.90 (6-3)
Position: Point guard
Date of birth: 15/01/80
Place of birth: Shanghai, China
Club Team 2009-10: Shanghai Sharks
Career: Shanghai Sharks (1997-2010).
Like many other Chinese players, the 30-year-old guard has always been faithful to one team.
In Liu Wei’s case, it’s his hometown squad. the Shanghai Sharks. He is part of the same
generation of players as Yao Ming and they started their career at the same time with the
Sharks. They wore the same jersey between 1997 and 2002 leading their team to two CBA
finals in 2000 and 2001 and to the CBA title in 2002. In 2004, Liu Wei tried to join his former
team-mate in the NBA, as he participated in Sacramento’s pre-season camp. He was waived
at the end of October just before the season started. In the Chinese league, the Shanghai-born
guard is a very good all-around player. He has always been a precious player for the national
team in spite of never having had a major role.
During the FIBA U17 World Championships earlier this summer in Hamburg, Germany, Ailun
Guo led all players in scoring with 22.6 points per contest. In the eight games China played in
the tournament, he scored more than 20 points on seven occasions and recorded a high of 30.
He also averaged 4.9 rpg and 5.5 apg for the tournament. He is the second Chinese player to
join the National Team without any professional league experience after Chen Jianghua. He
is certain to be the national side’s starting point guard in the near future. He is the nephew
of Shiqiang Guo, former head coach of the Chinese National Team at last year’s FIBA Asia
Championship and currently an assistant to Donewald. Father Shiqiang Guo played as point
guard in the Chinese National Team during the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.
Kariyeri: Liaoning Panpan Hunters (Çin-CBA, 2005-10).
oyuncu 2007 yazında Çin’in U19 Dünya Şampiyonası takımına seçildi.
17 yaşındaki Li, Liaoning’i CBA finaline taşıdı fakat burada son yılların en başarılı takımı
Guandong Southern Tigers’a yenildiler. Çin’in gümüş madalya sahibi en genç oyuncusu Li,
uluslararası arenada en iyiler arasına adını yazdırmayı bildi. Açılış turunda, Katar’a karşı
oynadıkları maçta 20 dakika boyunca sahadaydı. 2 sayılık ve serbest atışlarda eksiksiz
sayı üretirken, 8 ribaundu da almasını bildi. Buna rağmen şampiyona süresince, çok genç
olmasının verdiği dezavantaja yenildi. Playoff’larda yer almasını sağladığı takımı Liaoning’de
beşinci yılını tamamlayan Li, artık takımın genç ve deneyimsiz oyuncusundan kilit oyuncusuna
terfi etmeye hazır gibi görünüyor. 2.09 cm’lik oyuncu maçlardaki sağlamlığı ile biliniyor. Sayı
oranları maçtan maça değişkenlik gösterse de, tutarlılık sağlamayı başarabiliyor. Oyununun
