Chicago’s young franchise player has the whole package: He has size and strength, he can
finish at the rim. He’s getting better at shooting the ball and he’s already one of the fastest
and quickest point guards in the league. Actually, everything goes fast for Rose. After an
impressive first season in the NBA, the 2009 Rookie of the Year then became the Bulls first
All-Star since Michael Jordan in 1998. This dynamic scorer’s (20.8 points per game) ability to
create for others and beat almost anyone off the dribble is a strength the Americans will use
in Turkey. In the NBA, his major weakness is his outside shooting but he practiced hard this
summer to improve that aspect of his game. “I know that if I extend that, I’ll be a tough player
to guard and it will open other people up.” If he’s right, teams would have to decide to back off
of Rose or stay right on him. If the opponents stay too close to him that allows Rose to beat
them with speed, forcing the defence to collapse, leaving a shooter open. If they lay off of him,
then he’s able to punish with his mid-range jump shot. A tough match-up.

The Memphis Grizzlies forward has been a cornerstone of the franchise for the past four
seasons and thanks to him, they were the second-most improved team in the NBA last
season. This summer, he wants to become a leader in the US national team. “I remember
watching Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen play for Team USA and it is something that I’ve
always wanted to do in my career,” he said. The 24-year-old participated in the 2009 USA
Basketball National Team mini-camp in Las Vegas, leading all scorers with 27 points in the
USA Basketball showcase. Everyone was impressed by his performance. “I didn’t know he
was that explosive offensively, and he played really well. Really well,” said USA head coach
Mike Krzyzewski. Ranked 18th in scoring in 2010 (19.6 points), Gay has proven to be one of
the NBA’s top young scorers. “He’s a great offensive player, no question about that, and the
reputation he has is that of a great finisher late in games, and you want a guy like that with the
ball,” said Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo said.

Too small, too skinny, too young. One year ago, many observers thought that it would be difficult
for the young guard to become a solid professional in the NBA. Obviously, they were wrong.
During his rookie campaign with the Warriors, Curry averaged 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.9
assists and 1.9 steals per game. He has played extremely well during the last four months of
the season when he averaged 21.1 points, 6.8 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game. He was
the runner-up for the 2010 NBA Rookie of the Year award, just behind Sacramento’s new star
Tyreke Evans. Although he lacks experience in playing at the international level, Dell Curry’s
son should have a major impact from the bench. His three-point shooting percentage (43.7
percent) is precious and like his new team-mates Kevin Durant or Danny Granger, Curry
could probably be an outstanding zone-buster. His ball handling and his passing are already
exceptional too. “In adding Stephen we have brought into the national team fold one of the
game’s most exciting and promising newcomers,” Jerry Colangelo said.
