NO GASOL BUT AMBITIONS REMAIN HIGH FOR
DEFENDING WORLD CHAMPIONS
Seeing Pau Gasol lift the Naismith trophy in 2006 brought joy and ecstasy
to the fans of this basketball loving country. However, there is little chance of
that happening this year. But not because Spain cannot be World Champions.
Without Pau much will be expected of Spain’s rising superstar Ricky Rubio.
September 3rd, 2006. Spain was facing its first ever World Championship final
and its biggest star Pau Gasol was sitting in the bench after a serious injury
during the semi-finals. Greece led all the bets for the Championship but Spain
were a true team and the masters of defence claimed a historical title by a huge
margin of 70-47.
Four years later, Spain faces the World Championship as the title holders and,
for the first time since that memorable day in Saitama, Japan, without superstar
Pau Gasol. After two exhausting seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers in the
NBA during which he claimed back-to-back NBA titles, he has decided to sit
down for this summer and get some much needed rest.
So Spain is once again going for the big prize without its best man, but like what
happened in 2006, they have the talent and the determination to overcome his
absence and make a run for the gold. That is still the target for this ambitious
team, who are – incidentally – European champions as well.
Even without Pau Gasol, Spain remain one of the most powerful teams in the
World, with depth in all positions and with a good mixture of size, talent and
athleticism.
NBA playmaker José Calderón is back after missing 2009 EuroBasket because
of an injury, and young sensation Ricky Rubio will share the playmaking role
with the promising Sergio Llull coming off the bench as a combo guard. In the
two-guard position, Scariolo will find Juan Carlos Navarro as the main go-to-guy
while Rudy Fernández will add scoring at small forward. Veterans Alex Mumbrú
and Víctor Claver and a bunch of newcomers like Rafa Martínez, Carlos Suárez
and Fernando San Emeterio will add depth and versatility to the perimeter.
In the front-court, Scariolo will find another Gasol to start at the number five spot.
That will be Marc, younger brother of Pau and already an impact player in the
NBA playing for the Memphis Grizzlies. A skilled, powerful and very solid center,
he will be joined by veterans Felipe Reyes and Jorge Garbajosa as well as likely
newcomer Pablo Aguilar plus Fran Vázquez who will make a major comeback
for Spain. Out since 2005, Vázquez returns to the National Team after playing at
very high level with FC Barcelona during the last two seasons.
With all of these tools, Spain aims for another successful year to complete a
magical decade. It all started in 2001, also in Turkey, when Pau Gasol made his
debut with the National Team and Spain earned a Bronze medal. It was followed
by a fifth placed finish at the 2002 World Championship and a silver medal at
the EuroBaske 2003, before losing to United States in the 2004 Olympic Games
quarter-finals and heading home joint seventh with a 6-1 record. Pau Gasol
missed EuroBasket 2005 and Spain made it to fourth position, earning a spot in
the 2006 World Championship and starting an era of incredible results.
Four years in a row, Spain has played in the finals of all the major championships.
Saitama (Japan) witnessed in 2006 the first ever Spanish gold medal in a
World Championship, but a key shot of J.R. Holden with just two seconds to go
prevented the Iberians from triumphing at home during EuroBasket2007 held in
Madrid. A mix of joy and disappointment saw the team step onto the podium for
a silver medal alongside the golden Russians. In 2008 at the Olympics, Spain
rallied to the final and challenged United States in one of the most impressive
games ever seen in basketball history (107-118). It was only a silver medal, but
still worth its weight in gold.
At EuroBasket 2009, Spain finally ended its curse at FIBA’s European
Championships. After having lost in the final six times previously, the team led by
Pau Gasol managed to jump to the top of the podium after crushing Serbia in the
finals by 85-63. The victory did not come easily though. Spain lost to Serbia in the
first game and was nearly eliminated by Great Britain on the second day. In spite
of losing to Turkey in the opening game of the second round, the team coached
by Scariolo made it to the quarter-finals and rallied to the title with impressive
20, 18 and 22 point margin wins over France, Greece and Serbia respectively.

GASOL OLMADAN DA İDDİASINI KORUYOR
Pau Gasol’un 2006’da Naismith kupasını kaldırdığını görmek, İspanyol
basketbolseverlere büyük bir zevk ve heyecan verdi. İspanya’nın başarılı olması
durumunda kupayı kaldıran bu sefer de bir başka bir yıldız olacak. Pau Gasol’un
yokluğunda İspanya’nın yükselen oyuncusu Ricky Rubio’dan çok şey bekleniyor.
3 Eylül 2006. İspanya tarihindeki ilk Dünya Şampiyonası finalini oynuyor ve en
büyük yıldızları Pau Gasol yarı finallerde geçirdiği sakatlığından ötürü kenarda
oturuyordu. Bütün bahisler Yunanistan’ın kazanacağı görüşündeydi ancak
İspanya gerçek bir takımdı ve savunma ustaları olarak 70-47 skorla tarihi bir
farka ve Dünya Şampiyonluğu’na imzalarını attılar.
4 yıl sonra İspanya, yeniden Dünya Şampiyonası’nda ancak bu sefer yıldızları
Pau Gasol takımda yer almıyor. NBA’de üst üste çok yoğun geçen iki sezon
sonrasında uzun süredir vermesi gereken arayı veriyor bu yaz Pau Gasol ve
dinlenmeyi tercih ediyor.
İspanya bir kez daha en iyi oyuncularının yokluğunda madalya mücadelesi
verecek ve 2006’da da görüldüğü gibi yıldızının yokluğunu kapatacak yeteneklere
ve kararlılığa sahip. Avrupa Şampiyonluğu’nu da elinde tutan İspanya’nın hedefi,
Dünya Şampiyonu unvanını da korumak.
İspanya, tüm pozisyonlardaki başarılı oyuncusu Pau Gasol olmadan da
Dünya’nın en iyi takımlarından biri.
Sakatlığından dolayı 2009 EuroBasket’te yer alamayan NBA’in başarılı oyun
kurucusu Jose Calderon, genç yıldız Ricky Rubio ve gelecek vadeden Sergio
Llull oyun kuruculuk görevini paylaşacaklar. İki guardlı oyunlarda Scoriolo
genelde Juan Carlos Navarro’yu kullanmayı planlarken, Rudy Fernandez’in de
forvet olarak takıma sayı getireceğine inanıyor. Tecrübeli oyuncular Alex Mumbru

Scariolo’nun ilk beşte pivot olarak Pau’nun küçük kardeşi Marc Gasol’a yer
vermesi bekleniyor. Yetenekli, istikrarlı ve güçlü bir pivot olan Marc, NBA takımı
Memphis Grizzlies için de önemli bir oyuncu. Şampiyonadaki görevini veteran
Felipe Reyes ve Jorge Garbajosa’nın yanı sıra takıma yeni katılan oyuncu Pablo
Aguilar ve takıma yeniden geri dönüş yapan Fran Vazquez ile paylaşacak.
Vazquez 2005 sonrasında son iki sezonu FC Barcelona’da üst düzey bir
performans ile tamamlayarak yeniden Milli Takıma dahil oluyor.
Tüm bu olanaklarla İspanya başarılı bir yıl daha geçirerek son on yılı İspanya
tarihi için unutulmaz kılmak istiyor. Herşey 2001 EuroBasket’te Türkiye’de Pau
Gasol’un çıkışı ile başladı ve İspanya bronz madalyaya ulaştı. 2002 Dünya
Şampiyonası’nı beşinci olarak bitiren takım 2003 Eurobasket’te gümüş madalyı
kazandı. Pau Gasol EuroBasket 2005’te yer alamadı ve İspanyollar turnuvayı
dördüncü sırada tamamlayarak bir sene sonraki Dünya Şampiyonası’na katılma
hakkını elde ettiler.
İspanya, dört yıl üst üste tüm önemli turnuvaların finallerinde yer aldı. Saitama,
İspanyolların tarihinde aldıkları ilk Dünya Şampiyonası altın madalyasına tanıklık
etti, ancak EuroBasket 2007’de evleri Madrid’de J.K. Holden’in önemli şutu
İspanyolları kendi evlerinde şampiyon olmaktan alıkoydu. 2008 Olimpiyatları
Finalleri’nde, İspanya ile Amerika arasındaki karşılaşma basketbol tarihinin en
iyi maçlarından biri olarak kayda geçti ve İspanya’ya verdikleri mücadele ile altın
değerinde bir gümüş madalya getirdi.
EuroBasket 2009’da FIBA Avrupa Şampiyonaları’nda olan talihsizliklerine son
verdiler. Önceden 6 kez finalde kaybetmiş olan takım bu sefer Pau Gasol’un
podyumda kendisini göstermesi ile birlikte Sırbistan’ı 85-63 mağlup etti. Çok da
kolay kazanılmayan altın madalya yolunda İspanya, Sırbistan’a mağlup düşerek
şampiyonaya başlamıştı. İkinci gün Büyük Britanya’ya kaybederek turnuvaya
nerdeyse veda edecekti. İkinci tur açılış maçında Türkiye’ye yenilmesine rağmen
Scariolo yönetimindeki takım çeyrek finallere çıktı ve Fransa, Yunanistan ve
Sırbistan karşısında farklı galibiyetler alarak altın madalyaya ulaştı.
