As injuries or poor play kept other centers away, Timofey Mozgov emerged as the only true big
man on the National Team during Eurobasket 2009 and he grabbed his opportunity. Raw and
yet exceptionally agile for a player of his size, Mozgov started to amass points and rebounds,
and came out of the tournament as one of the most intriguing prospects in Europe. However,
the past season in Khimki can be summed up as a disappointment. Expected to improve after
a confidence-booster like this, Mozgov’s production actually dropped. A change of the club’s
coach and point guards may be the reason, as Mozgov never had the skills to consistently
create his own shot. In this case, there is still hope that he will deliver again upon return to the
environment that made him so successful in the past.

Alexey Zhukanenko is a candidate for a National Team call-up in case the team needs more
front-court depth. Able to play at both the center and power forward positions, he is a true big
man who can hold his position in the paint and at the same time is versatile enough when
it comes to attacking the basket. He made 6 of his 17 three-point attempts last season and
is also confident shooting from mid-range. On a Dynamo team that didn’t have any foreign
players during the 2009-2010 campaign, Zhukanenko was a reserve behind former National
Team center Alexey Savrasenko and scored over 20 points several times - almost on pace
for a point per minute. He may still lack some experience playing at the top level but is doing
his best to close the gap.

FIBA Avrupa Şampiyonası’nda milli takımdaki tek gerçek pivot oyuncusu olarak ortaya çıktı
ve şansı yaver giti. Boyuna göre tecrübesiz ama çevik bir oyuncu olan Mozgov sayıları ve
ribauntları toplamaya başladı ve Avrupa’nın en büyüleyici gelecek vaat eden oyuncularından
biri olarak turnuvadan yüzünün akıyla çıktı. Ama Khimki’deki bir sonraki sezon onun için
bir hayalkırıklığı olarak özetlenebilir. Onun gibi kendine güvenen bir oyuncunun gelişmesi
beklenirken Mozgov’un verimliliği tam tersine düştü. Bunun nedeni kulüp antrenörlerinin ve
oyun kurucularının değişmesi olabilir çünkü Mozgov kendi atış pozisyonunu devamlı olarak
kendisinin ayarladığı bir yetkinlikte değil. Bu durumda geçmişte bu kadar başarılı olmasını
sağlayan çevreye tekrar kavuşma umudu hala mevcut.

Alexey Zhukanenko takımın daha fazla ön alan derinlliğine ihtiyacı olması durumunda milli
takıma çağrılacak bir aday. Zhukanenko hem pivot hem de uzun forvet olarak oynayabiliyor.
Pozisyonunu çizgide tutabilen aynı zamanda da çembere hücum söz konusu olduğunda
yararlı olabilen gerçek bir pivot. Bu sezon 17 üçlük atışın 6’ını isabet ettirdi ve orta menzilli
atışlarında da kendine güveniyor. Zhukanenko bu sezon yabancı oyuncusu olmayan Dynamo
takımında mili takım eski pivotu Alexey Savrasenko’nun arkasındaki yedek oyuncuydu ve
birkaç kez neredeyse dakika başı bir sayıya yaklaşarak 20 sayının üzerinde bir skor elde etti.
Belki en üst seviyede oynamak için deneyimi yok ama aradaki farkı kapatmak için elinden
gelenin en iyisini yapıyor.
