Ibrahim is something of an exciting project for all of Lebanese basketball and could be the
next big thing. Initially a product of the Riyadi Academy as a young boy, he is now in the USA
learning his trade and has attracted great interest from college scouts. He was a real beacon
of light for Lebanon in the FIBA U18 Asian Championship and that is not surprising when
you consider his attributes. He is already gaining a reputation as being a smart player with
a big basketball IQ while physically, he is tall and yet shoots from all ranges and has even
been compared to NBA and Turkey star Hedo Turkoglu. While such comparisons seem faintly
ridiculous at this stage of his development, he is a massive talent and his numbers at youth
level are frighteningly good. As with all prodigious talents the key could be patience and it
remains to be seen whether Tab Baldwin will give the one big hope for the future of Lebanese
basketball his chance. Many inside Lebanese basketball are of the opinion that time is truly
now and he could be a real surprise package in Turkey and acclaim rising star status.

El Khatib is not only the leader of the Lebanon team but for so long now has been the man
around which so much has revolved. His performances in the last decade or so have ensured
his place in history as one of the most important players in the history of Lebanese basketball.
His presence in the team adds vital experience, craft and a huge amount of talent and it is
also the case that he has been one of the best players in Asia during his time with the National
team. When you mention many great moments in Lebanese basketball, El Khatib is usually
the man in the middle of all things good. Not least their thrilling and legendary 74-73 win over
France during the last FIBA World Championships when he scored a sensational 29 points.
He was scintillating on that night and the man they call ‘The Tiger’ reminded everyone that
while he never followed another great Lebanese player Rony Seikaly into the NBA, he is still a
class act and high level player. So influential for so long, there are those who claim he has lost
his quickness and a some of his sparkle in the last year or so and have questioned whether
he can still be a force and whether the motivation remains for him to excel once again in a
Lebanon vest. If he does get onto the court, he will remain the heartbeat of this Lebanon side
and some have even suggested it could even be his final bow in front of the adoring fans now
he is a veteran player. Always explosive, athletic and a ready-made scorer all over the floor,
he perhaps now has to refine his game slightly to take into account the fact he is entering the
latter stage of his career. This does not necessarily mean his considerable influence on this
team will evaporate – only that he can’t get it done himself all the time and is looking to find his
team-mates more often than previously. An interesting character for sure and can be one of
the stars of the tournament if he shrugs off his injury concerns and comes to Turkey motivated,
fresh and ready to add one more stunning chapter into Lebanese basketball history. Even if he
only plays half as good as he was in his absolute prime (especially against the tougher teams)
– he will still bring plenty to the table.

İbrahim Lübnan basketbolunda heyecan yaratıyor ve gelecekte çok büyük bir yıldız olabilir.
Riyadi Academy’den yetişen oyuncu şimdi ABD’de oynuyor ve üniversite basketbolu için
gözlemcilerin dikkatini çekmiş durumda. FIBA U18 Asya Şampiyonası’nda Lübnan için umut
ışığı olmuştu ve katkılarına bakılırsa bu hiç de şaşırtıcı değil. Basketbol zekasıyla şimdiden
göz dolduruyor ve uzun boyuyla her noktadan atış yapabildiği için Türkiye’den NBA yıldızı
Hidayet Türkoğlu ile kıyaslanıyor. Bu türden bir karşılaştırma yaşına göre henüz erken olsa
da o büyük bir yetenek ve istatistikleri korkutucu derecede iyi. Tüm prestijli yetenekler için
de geçerli olduğu gibi işin püf noktası sabırlı olmak.Tab Baldwin’in, geleceğin yıldızı olan
oyuncuya bir şans verip vermeyeceği merak konusu. Lübnan basketbolunu yakından izleyen
insanlara göre onun zamanı geldi ve Türkiye’de kendini göstererek yıldız statüsüne ulaşabilir.

biri olarak tarihe adını altın harflerle yazdırdı. Takıma deneyim, ustalık ve bolca yetenek
sağlıyor ve aynı zamanda Milli Takım ile Asya’nın en iyi oyuncularından biri olmuştu. Lübnan
basketbolunda unutulmayacak anlara bakarsak, El Khatib’in bu anların tam merkezinde yer
aldığını görürüz. Son FIBA Dünya Şampiyonası’nda olay yaratarak 29 sayıya ulaştı ve bir
efsane haline geldi. O akşam sahada harikalar yarattı ve “Kaplan” lakaplı bu oyuncu Lübnanlı
diğer yıldız Rony Sekaly gibi NBA’e gitmeden de üst seviye bir oyuncu olunabileceğini herkese
gösterdi. Bugüne kadar hala etkisini devam ettirse de eski hızını kaybettiğini söyleyenler ve
Lübnan forması ile eskisi gibi harikalar yaratıp yaratamayacağını sorgulayanlar da var. Eğer
sahaya çıkarsa Lübnan cephesini omuzlarında taşıyacak isim olacak. Hatta artık kıdemli
bir oyuncu olduğu için bu onun seyircileri coşturduğu son turnuva olabilir. Her zaman fişek
gibi, atletik ve sahanın her yerinden sayı bulmaya hazır olan oyuncu artık kariyerinin ikinci
safhasının başladığını göz önüne alarak oyununu rafine etmeyi seçebilir. Bu, takımdaki
etkisinin buharlaşıp uçacağı anlamına gelmez. Yalnızca artık her şeyi tek başına yapamayabilir
ve takım arkadaşlarına eskisinden daha çok ihtiyaç duyabilir. İlginç bir karakter olduğu kesin
ve sakatlık endişelerini bir kenara bırakıp Türkiye’ye hazır bir şekilde gelirse Lübnan basketbol
tarihi yeniden yazılabilir. Özellikle zorlu takımlara karşı son zamanlardakinin yarısı kadar iyi
oynarsa yeniden harikalar yaratabilir.
