Tab Baldwin will be pacing the sidelines for a third successive FIBA World Championships, only
this time he will be coaching against his beloved New Zealand Tall Blacks having been handed
the reins of the Lebanese National Team. Certainly it can’t be argued that Baldwin doesn’t have
the neccessary experience or track record to succeed. He transformed the fortunes of the New
Zealand team and turned them into a respectable force in World Basketball. He knows what
it takes to succeed at this level having led the Tall Blacks to the semi-finals of the 2002 FIBA
Wolrd Championships in Indianapolis and having also coached the New Zealand team at the
Olympics. He has a difficult task on his hands with Lebanon but he has the kind of character and
approach that certainly gives him a shot. Having moved to New Zealand in 1988 he helped the
Otago Nuggets to promotion and then got the Aucklands Stars to 5 NBL titles in eight years – a
feat that resulted in him being named NBL Coach of the Year three times. He also has extensive
experience of coaching in Europe at club level having been in charge of Banvitspor in Turkey and
PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece. He definitely has a pedigree for this level and if nothing else, his
tales of his accomplishments with New Zealand should be enough to make his players believe in
what they are doing.

Mahmoud is a great team player who knows what it is like to win after so many years and
trophies in the domestic game with Sporting Al Riyadi. While he is not particularly explosive
or capable of pouring in the points, he is still an important part of the side. Defensively he is
capable of locking down opponents and can give Rony Fahed a well-deserved rest without
the team losing too much when he is on the floor. He remains just the kind of back-up point
guard needed in tournament basketball. It’s a shame he doesn’t really have any kind of reliable
perimeter game otherwise he would certainly be even more of an asset. The only problem
is that while he can be very effective, sometimes he can be a little anonymous on court and
needs to impose himself more on each and every game he plays.

Everybody loves a solid point-guard who can also shoot the three and that is why Rony Fahed
is so popular and effective for Lebanon. He first played for Lebanon’s National Team as a
teenager over a decade ago and has cemented his place as the starting playmaker for the
team. Is definitely capable of finishing the tournament with a double digit scoring average
as he doesn’t find scoring too much of a problem. He is a definite threat both with and also
without the ball due to his consistent three-point shot. Interestingly, he completed 30 games
in the CBA of China last season, the first time he has played outside of his own country. This
experience will have given him more to bring to the table in this tournament and it will be
interesting to see whether he can increase his role and influence as a result. Always arrives
ready to play.

Tab Baldwin üçüncü kez FIBA Dünya Şampiyonası sahnesinde olacak ama bu kez Lübnan Milli
Takımı bünyesindeki çok sevdiği Yeni Zelanda Tall Blacks oyuncularına karşı mücadele verecek.
Baldwin’in gerekli deneyime ve başarı geçmişine sahip olmadığı söylenemez. Yeni Zelanda
takımını baştan yarattı ve Dünya basketbolunun saygıdeğer bir takımı haline getirdi. 2002
İndianapolis FIBA Dünya Şampiyonası’nda Tall Blacks’ı yarı finallere çıkardığı ve Olimpiyatlarda
da Yeni Zelanda’ya antrenörlük yaptığı için başarıya giden yolu çok iyi biliyor. Lübnan takımı ile
zorlu bir görevi var ama karakteri ve yaklaşım tarzı ona artı puan kazandırabilir. 1988’de Yeni
Zelanda’ya taşındıktan sonra Otago Nuggets ile başarılar kazandı ve sonrasında Aucklands
Stars’a sekiz yılda 5 NBL unvanı kazandırarak üç kez yılın antrenörü seçildi. Türkiye’de Banvitspor
ve Yunanistan’da PAOK Thessaloniki gibi güçlü Avrupa takımlarına da antrenörlük yaptı. Alanında
oldukça tecrübeli ve hepsinden öte Yeni Zelanda ile kazandığı başarılar oyuncularının ona
güvenmesi açısından yeterli olacaktır.

Mahmoud mükemmel bir takım oyuncusu ve Sporting Al Riyadi ile kazandığı kupalardan sonra
başarının tadına artık ulaşmış durumda. Sahada art arda sayılar bulan bir oyuncu olmasa da
kadronun önemli bir parçası. Savunmada rakiplerini kilitleyip gerektiğinde sayı kaybetmeden
Rony Fahed’e dinlenme süresi vererek oyuna dahil olabiliyor. Turnuva basketbolunda en çok
ihtiyaç duyulacak yedek oyun kuruculardan biri. Sahada daha aktif bir oyun sergileyebilseydi
takımdaki yeri daha da güçlenebilirdi. Tek problem ise oldukça etkili olabilmesine rağmen
sahada kendini gösterememesi. Oynadığı her maça kendini daha çok verebilmeli.

Hem üç sayı atabilen hem de sağlam bir oyun kurucu olabilen oyuncuları herkes sever ve Rony
Fahed de bu yüzden Lübnan takımında çok popüler. Yaklaşık 10 yıl önce gençliğinde Lübnan
Mili Takımı için forma giyiyordu ve takımın ilk beşine o zamanlar adını yazdırmıştı. Eğer büyük
bir problem yaşamazsa muhtemelen turnuvayı çift haneli sayılarla kapatacak. Hem toplu hem
de topsuz alanda büyük bir tehlike çünkü boş kaldığı an üçlük bulabiliyor. Geçtiğimiz sezon
Çin CBA liginde 30 maç oynadı ve bu ülkesi dışında oynadığı ilk maçlardı. Bu deneyim onu
turnuvada önemli kılacaktır ve sonucunda rolünü ne kadar geliştirip geliştiremediğini izleyip
göreceğiz. O, oynamaya her zaman hazır.
