The Chestnut Innovation Center occupies an old mill building here, owned by ARC Technologies, that is now home to about 20 small manufacturing businesses and service firms, which employ almost 100 people. Georgetown maintains that the real Old Nancy is not in Rowley, but on exhibit in the basement of the Georgetown Town Hall. This Memorial Day, stalwarts from the Rowley Veterans Association, who helped restore the old cannon and were accused two years ago of illegally firing it, have the town’s approval to bring Old Nancy out of hiding for the annual parade. Roy Richter will pull it on a trailer with his 1930s tractor. Bill Gaynor, one of the RVA parade organizers, said he expects a huge crowd to come out to see Old Nancy on display. “It’s Rowley’s Statute of Liberty,” he said. The tale of Old Nancy started shortly after New England rebels tossed British tea in the bay. The English, seeking to subdue the rebels, sent the Nancy, an ordinance ship, from Liverpool carrying several cannons and munitions for the British troops. The ship was captured by the Yankee schooner Lee, commanded by Capt. John Manly, and taken to Gloucester. In the confusion on the docks, one of the cannons was left behind and sat rusting until Rowley fish merchant, Maj. Eben Boynton, bought it. Amigo proposed to Ives that the state adopt a tax credit for any corporation that buys products from start-up companies. “There’s nothing better than customers for a small company,” Amigo told Ives. A New Hampshire solar manufacturer, which is looking to move to Massachusetts to take advantage of the state’s alternative energy tax credits, proposed that the state invest in placing solar panels on the roofs of all public housing and public buildings as a way of stimulating the solar industry. Several of the small manufacturers said they need more trained machinists and would like for the state or community college and technical schools to develop a certification for trained technicians. Bob Blair, who owns Speedboard USA, a surf and paddle board manufacturer, praised the student interns who have worked for his company and said he would love to provide opportunities for high school and community college students to learn manufacturing skills on the job. The senator, who also holds a Old Nancy Rides Again Boynton had two sons. One lived in the east parish of Rowley, the other in the west parish, which since 1838 has been Georgetown. When Boynton died without a will, both sons claimed the cannon. And thus the feud over the ownership of the old British cannon began. There have been many attempts by both towns to steal the cannon. As the story goes, in 1876, Rowley stole it back, but Georgetown claimed the stolen cannon was a phoney. In 1877, Georgetown rolled out its Old Nancy under tight security. A Rowley resident got close enough to jab a knife into it to demonstrate that the Georgetown Old Nancy was made of wood, or so the story goes. For its centennial celebration in 1938, Georgetown exhibited an iron Old Nancy and claimed it was the original. That, of course, renewed the feud. A year later on the Fourth of July, Rowley brought out its Old Nancy and fired it. In firing it, the old cannon suffered some damage, which private citizens repaired. “We have all seen it fired many times. Does the Georgetown cannon fire?” asked Hazen, who keeps in her office a replica of Old Nancy, made by her son when he was an elementary school student. seat on the state’s higher education committee, said she would meet with the Northern Essex Community College and the trade schools to discuss their intern programs. After doing research on Revolutionary War cannons at Harvard University’s Fogg Museum, he believes the Georgetown Old Nancy is the real one. Rowley’s Old Nancy is an artillery cannon, not a ship’s cannon, Desjardins said. Several years ago, he designed a new base for the cannon and asked the Spaulding Colonial Reproductions to make it for the Georgetown Old Nancy. Town leaders put their Old Nancy on permanent exhibit in the basement of town hall. The feud between the two towns is “all in fun,” Hazen said. “We could have had it tested, but what would be the fun in that? The fun is in the legend.” Rowley’s Old Nancy has been refurbished and exhibited in events like the Newburyport and Rowley 375th anniversary parades. The Rowley Memorial Day Parade, which will feature scout troops, the Triton High School Band, police cruisers, Patriot Riders and a color guard, will begin Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the parking lot of the RVA and wind through the town cemetery behind the library.
