REGIONAL – Grown ups argue
over it. School children write reports
about it. Crowds gather just to have
a look at it. And from time to time
residents of Georgetown have tried
to steal it from Rowley, although a
Georgetown historian claims it is not
the real thing.
Old Nancy, a British cannon in
Colonial times that was hijacked on its
journey to Boston, has been the topic
of argument and late night mischief
between Rowley and Georgetown for
the last 200 years.
So intense is the belief in Rowley
that Georgetown will try to steal the
cannon, town officials, led by Robert
Merry, chairman of the town’s Board
of Selectmen and licensed cannoneer,
have locked it away, hidden under a
tarpaulin.
When asked where Old Nancy is,
Rowley Town Clerk Susan Hazen,
who is also the head of the Rowley
Historical Society, joked, “I can’t tell
you. If I did, I’d have to kill you.”
TRITON – Triton High School seniors Kristin Romanski and Tyler
Ciarmataro were the first recipients of an annual scholarship program
from the Rowley Veterans Association.
Named in honor of Charlie Hardy, who served in the Army’s 82nd
Airborne Division and and managed the RVA for five years, the program
awarded $500 each to the students. Romanski will study math at the
University of Massachusetts at Amherst next year. Ciarmataro will study
game design and development at the Rochester Institute for Technology.
The scholarships were awarded at the association’s annual customer
appreciation day Saturday. The scholarship program was organized by
David Leavitt, the association president, Bill Gaynor, association secretary,
Jimmy Edwards, the association manager, and Bugg LaRouchelle, who
spearheaded the fundraising.
AMESBURY – With General Electric moving its
headquarters next year from Connecticut to the Boston’s
Seaport District, state officials seem more optimistic these
days that Massachusetts can again become a friendlier site for
manufacturing.
A small example of this renewed interest in manufacturing
companies was State Sen. Kathryn O’Connor Ives’ recent visit
to the Chestnut Innovation Center, a second-stage incubator
Holy Family Hospital Again Earns
“A” Hospital Safety Score
Award Applies to Haverhill and
Methuen Campuses
This prestigious “A” Hospital Safety Score applies to both of Holy
Family Hospital’s full service campuses in Methuen and Haverhill. Both
campuses provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care, surgical
care, intensive care, and 24/7 emergency services to the Merrimack Valley
and southern New Hampshire.
“At Holy Family Hospital we continually strive to improve care across
our two full-service hospital campuses,” says Holy Family Hospital
President Joseph Roach. “The highly qualified physicians and health care
professionals we have on staff have superior training, are dedicated to
patients, and they pay close attention to detail, all of which play a role
in keeping patients safe. This award is tangible proof that the highest
standard of care is being delivered to our patients each and every day.”
The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s
leading experts on patient safety, and is administered by The Leapfrog
Group, an independent industry watchdog.
Calculated under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel,
the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital
safety data to produce a single “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” score, representing
a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score uses national performance measures
from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid Services and the American Hospital Association’s
Annual Survey and Health Information Technology Supplement.

“I greatly enjoyed meeting the
business owners and entrepreneurs
at the Chestnut Innovation Center,
where I got to hear about their goals
and challenges,” Ives wrote in an
email. “This meeting and tour was
a great opportunity for me to share
with them how my work in the
legislature can beneficially intersect
with their work as small business
owners working to grow in the
Merrimack Valley.”
“It’s my job to listen to small
business owners and start-ups to
find out how the legislature can help
support a healthy environment for
Massachusetts businesses to grow
and prosper,” she wrote.
The Chestnut Innovation Center
occupies an old mill building here,
owned by ARC Technologies, that
is now home to about 20 small
manufacturing businesses and
service firms, which employ almost
100 people.
Ives, the chair of the legislature’s
Joint Committee on Community
Development and Small
Businesses,
listened to the hopes and dreams
of entrepreneurs like Andrew
kept secret in town, said one
resident, is that Old Nancy is locked
in the Town Barn.
Georgetown maintains that the
real Old Nancy is not in Rowley,
but on exhibit in the basement of
the Georgetown Town Hall.
This Memorial Day, stalwarts from
the Rowley Veterans Association,
who helped restore the old cannon
and were accused two years ago of
illegally firing it, have the town’s
approval to bring Old Nancy out of
hiding for the annual parade. Roy
Richter will pull it on a trailer with
his 1930s tractor.
Bill Gaynor, one of the RVA
parade organizers, said he expects a
huge crowd to come out to see Old
Nancy on display. “It’s Rowley’s
Statute of Liberty,” he said.
The tale of Old Nancy started
shortly after New England rebels
tossed British tea in the bay. The
English, seeking to subdue the
rebels, sent the Nancy, an ordinance
ship, from Liverpool carrying
several cannons and munitions for
the British troops.
The ship was captured by the
Yankee schooner Lee, commanded
by Capt. John Manly, and taken to
Gloucester. In the confusion on the
docks, one of the cannons was left
behind and sat rusting until Rowley
fish merchant, Maj. Eben Boynton,
bought it.
electricity to the cabs of 18-wheelers
Amigo proposed to Ives that
the state adopt a tax credit for any
corporation that buys products
from start-up companies.
“There’s nothing better than
customers for a small company,”
Amigo told Ives.
A New Hampshire solar
manufacturer, which is looking
to move to Massachusetts to take
advantage of the state’s alternative
energy tax credits, proposed that the
state invest in placing solar panels
on the roofs of all public housing
and public buildings as a way of
stimulating the solar industry.
Several of the small manufacturers
said they need more trained
machinists and would like for the
state or community college and
technical schools to develop a
certification for trained technicians.
Bob Blair, who owns Speedboard
USA, a surf and paddle board
manufacturer, praised the student
interns who have worked for his
company and said he would love
to provide opportunities for high
school and community college
students to learn manufacturing
skills on the job.
The senator, who also holds a
Old Nancy Rides Again
Boynton had two sons. One
lived in the east parish of Rowley,
the other in the west parish, which
since 1838 has been Georgetown.
When Boynton died without
a will, both sons claimed the
cannon. And thus the feud over the
ownership of the old British cannon
began.
There have been many attempts
by both towns to steal the cannon.
As the story goes, in 1876, Rowley
stole it back, but Georgetown
claimed the stolen cannon was a
phoney.
In 1877, Georgetown rolled out
its Old Nancy under tight security.
A Rowley resident got close enough
to jab a knife into it to demonstrate
that the Georgetown Old Nancy
was made of wood, or so the story
goes.
For its centennial celebration
in 1938, Georgetown exhibited
an iron Old Nancy and claimed it
was the original. That, of course,
renewed the feud.
A year later on the Fourth of
July, Rowley brought out its Old
Nancy and fired it. In firing it, the
old cannon suffered some damage,
which private citizens repaired.
“We have all seen it fired many
times. Does the Georgetown cannon
fire?” asked Hazen, who keeps in
her office a replica of Old Nancy,
made by her son when he was an
elementary school student.
seat on the state’s higher education
committee, said she would
meet with the Northern Essex
Community College and the trade
schools to discuss their intern
programs. She proposed initiating
a small manufacturers job fair in
conjunction with the community
college and trade schools.
Ives told the business owners there
are numerous grant opportunities
for small businesses, and her office
is developing a comprehensive list
of available grants that the business
owners might apply for.
“In addition to grant opportunities
that some attendees were familiar
with, it was insightful to also discuss
ideas for growing their customer
base, ways to recruit interns, as well
as pending legislation that relates to
local manufacturing and workforce
development,” Ives said.
Bob O’Brien, the president of
the innovation center said the
meeting with Ives was very helpful
to the center and to its small
manufacturing tenants because she
“That information is hard to
come by,” he said. “It is a key time
in Senate right now, and we need
Katie’s support.”
Ed Desjardins with the
Georgetown Historical Society,
who lived in Rowley for 12 years,
disagrees that Rowley has the
original. After doing research on
Revolutionary War cannons at
Harvard University’s Fogg Museum,
he believes the Georgetown Old
Nancy is the real one.
Rowley’s Old Nancy is an artillery
cannon, not a ship’s cannon,
Desjardins said.
Several years ago, he designed
a new base for the cannon and
asked the Spaulding Colonial
Reproductions to make it for the
Georgetown Old Nancy. Town
leaders put their Old Nancy on
permanent exhibit in the basement
of town hall.
The feud between the two towns
is “all in fun,” Hazen said. “We
could have had it tested, but what
would be the fun in that? The fun is
in the legend.”
Rowley’s Old Nancy has been
refurbished and exhibited in events
like the Newburyport and Rowley
375th anniversary parades.
The Rowley Memorial Day Parade,
which will feature scout troops, the
Triton High School Band, police
cruisers, Patriot Riders and a color
guard, will begin Monday at 1:30
p.m. from the parking lot of the
cemetery behind the library. It will
end at the Town Common.
about the redesign and current
rehabilitation of the Schooner
Ernestina-Morrissey, a nineteenth
century example of the Essex
wooden shipbuilding tradition
that has spanned four centuries.
The boat, the official vessel of the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts,
is in dry dock in Boothbay Harbor
Shipyard in Maine where Master
Shipwright David Short has faired
her lines and is installing a new
keel, futtocks, frames, planks and
aft deck. The wooden Fredonia
schooner Effie M.Morrissey was
built in 1894 at the James and
Tarr Shipyard in Essex for the
Gloucester fishing fleet. Under
Captain Bob Bartlett she sailed to
within 600 miles of the North Pole,
served in WWII, and later brought
immigrants to the U.S. under the
power of sail. Returned to the U.S.
in 1982 as a gift from the newly
independent Cape Verdean people,
the Ernestina sailed as an education
vessel until 2005. Renamed
Ernestina-Morrissey in 2014, she is
a National Historic Landmark. This
SAVE THE MONARCH!
– A VERY SPECIAL EVENING
PRESENTATION
Pretty much everyone has seen
a monarch butterfly – at least in
photographs. But did you know that
this charismatic insect’s numbers are
in dramatic decline? Katie Hone,
“The Monarch Gardener”, will
deliver a special presentation about
the monarch and its natural history,
the reasons for their decline, and the
many conservation efforts that are
happening across their migration
pathway. She’ll also provide tips
for how you can help the monarch
by planting a native plant garden
in your own backyard! Thursday,
May 26th, 7:00 – 8:30 pm. This
program, which is most appropriate
for teens and adults, will take
place in the refuge visitor center
FRIDAY MORNING BIRD
WALKS: FOCUS ON
WARBLERS
Get an early start on the birding
day with local trips in the area.
Many birds are most active early
in the morning and therefore easier
to see. Explore various locations
in the greater Newburyport/Plum
Island area including such birding
hot spots as the Parker River
National Wildlife Refuge on Plum
Island, Oak Hill Cemetery in
Newburyport, Pikes Bridge Road in
West Newbury, and Salisbury Beach
State Reservation. The focus for
these excursions will be the beautiful
wood-warblers migrating through
our area. Of course, we will also be
on the lookout for other neotropical
migrants. Fri, May 27, 2016 8:00
CHILD ENRICHMENT
CHILD ENRICHMENT
Warmer months bring days
spent outdoors, sweet treats and
backyard barbecues. Spending time
with loved ones outside can also
mean many messes, big and small.
With kids out of school, outdoor
entertaining and keeping the house
clean become serious challenges
— even for the most organized
families. Here are five easy hacks to
keep your house (and kids) clean
while embracing the mess.
5 Tips to Enbrace Messes
DIY
ice pop drip catcher
Common
Kids love an ice pop after playing
outside, but the melty drips can be
a nightmare. To help catch drips It’s easy to forget to kick off
eekly and save clothes, simply Community insert the your shoes after a long day ice pop stick into the bottom of Newspaper
playing
outside. And even if you do, it
a paper cup or cupcake wrapper.
Pull the ice pop all the way down
and the catcher instantly serves
as protection, saving clothes and
hands from getting sticky!
Kiss stains goodbye, naturally
Summer fun usually brings
stubborn grass stains to clothes.
Easily remove pesky stains with
pure white vinegar. Simply soak
the stained area of clothing with
vinegar, wash as usual, and voila
— clean clothes without the use of
harsh chemicals.
Keep sand in the sandbox
seems as though sand, dirt, and
other messes somehow manage to
Combating faucet stains
is a piece of cake
As you transition inside
after a long day, first
things first — wash your
hands! Installing a faucet
that resists fingerprints
and other stains is a nobrainer.
A faucet with SpotShield
Technology such as the Delta
Merge lavatory faucet helps resist
unsightly water spots and stains
while staying clean for longer
periods of time. Available online
and in stores such as The Home
Depot, this faucet translates to less
clean-up and more time spent at
the summer barbecue.
Easy craft clean up
Not all fun is had outdoors.
When kids are inside creating
crafty masterpieces, keep the glue
and glitter in one place by laying
out an old sheet or piece of canvas
on the floor or table. When the
crafting is complete, simply toss it
into the wash or garbage for quick
and easy clean up
NEWBURYPORT -- Water is
a precious resource and the snow
fall this winter did little to restore
our water supplies. This has lead
Newburyport to partner with
the Great American Rain Barrel
Company in Hyde Park, MA to
offer recycled barrels to residents
as part of a community water
conservation program.
“We are thrilled to be offering
Gem in Georgetown!
Newburyport Rain Barrel Program
this simple and inexpensive device
to our residents to bring down
their water costs and help our
community protect our aquifers,”
says Molly Ettenborough,
Recycling and Energy Manager
for Newburyport. “ We are seeing
residents hooking up two and three
barrels together and saving on their
water bills.”
In New England residential
water usage can increase as much
as 60% during the spring, summer
and fall seasons from outdoor
watering such as watering gardens,
lawns, filling pools and, washing
cars. Barrels can offset that usage;
saving homeowner’s money and
helping the community manage
water supplies. Rain barrels can
also reduce runoff. In watershed
areas, runoff from homes and
developments can harm existing
water sources because overtaxed
storm sewers discharge polluted
runoff. This is costly for towns to
manage and over time this takes a
toll on the fragile aquatic ecosystem
that the area is dependant on.
Suzanne Gebelein, Owner of
the Great American Rain Barrel
Company comments, “We have
been selling barrels for 25 years.”
Cities and towns like Newburyport
are able to offer resident’s rain
barrels at near to wholesale prices
and have them delivered right to the
community for a local distribution.
Homeowners connect the barrels
to their downspouts and collect a
significant amount of rainwater,
offsetting their watering needs and
keeping water bills down. In this
region there is typically 16” of rain
from May 1st – September 30th.
For every inch of rainfall a 1000
square foot surface can collect 620
gallons of water, which means that
over the course of the extended
summer months an average roof
of 2400 square feet could see
more than 20,000 gallons of fresh
rainwater passing over its surface
from May through September.
That is a significant source of water
that homeowners can tapping
into for free. To keep a small
10’ x 10’ garden irrigated during
the summer months can mean
using up to 1700 gallons of water.
Based on the average roof size a 60
gallon rain barrels would fill for
every 1/10” of rainfall. The Great
American Rain Barrel Company
recommends one barrel for every
100 square feet garden.
Newburyport is offering the
Great American Rain Barrel in
three colors; Forest Green, Earth
Brown or Nantucket Gray at the
low cost of $79 versus the retail
price of $119. To take advantage
of this community program
discount please visit www.
greatamericanrainbarrel.com look
side bar, and find “Newburyport”,
The Great American Rain Barrel
subsidiary of a Mediterranean
specialty food importing business.
60 gallon shipping drums. For
center of things. But this week it might be wiser to watch and learn
from the sidelines. A Pisces wants to make you purr.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) “New” is your watchword
this week. Be open to new ideas, both on the job and in your personal
life. A romantic Aries or Sagittarian beckons.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Some difficult family
decisions have to be faced, but be sure to get more facts before you
act. Be careful not to neglect your health during this trying time.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You still need to support
a loved one through a difficult time. Meanwhile, things continue to
work out to your benefit in the workplace.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Aspects continue
to favor expanding social opportunities. A Gemini reaches out to
offer a chance for re-establishing a once-close relationship.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) There’s a potential
for misunderstanding in both your job and your personal life. A full
explanation of your intentions helps smooth things over.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might be feeling
restless on the job, but delay making any major moves until all the
facts are in. A Scorpio has a surprising revelation.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your business sense works to
your advantage as you sort through the possibilities that are opening
up. A Libra is Cupid’s best bet for your romantic prospects.
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
It is common sense that
infected teeth, whether they
hurt or not, or are broken
down beyond repair, should be
removed. We also all know by
now that there are mouth-body
connections and that the mouth
is the “gateway” to the rest of
the body. There is no disputing
that a healthy mouth is better for
you on many levels. However,
in a recently released study, the
guidelines for treatment of some
types of dental problems prior
to specific surgery need closer
consideration.
According to a study in The
Annals of Thoracic Surgery,
removing an infected tooth
prior to cardiac surgery may
increase the risk of major adverse
outcomes, including risk of death
prior to surgery. This is a very
specific study for a very specific
group of patients. It does not
insinuate ignoring or postponing
dental problems prior to any
surgery.
Dental extraction of abscessed or
infected teeth is often performed
to decrease the risk of infection
during surgery and endocarditis
(an inflammation of the inner
layer of the heart) following
Here’s yet another reason to
try to stay fit: Seniors with more
muscle mass have a lower risk of
death.
That’s according to researchers
who spent eight years surveying
6,400 patients with cardiovascular
disease. They divided the patients
into four groups: high muscle/
high fat, high muscle/low fat, low
muscle/high fat and low muscle/
low fat. The winners (those with
improved survival odds) were
those with the high muscle/low
fat combination. The level of fat
Cardiac Considerations
surgery. In this particular study,
physician researchers evaluated
the occurrence of major adverse
outcomes in 205 patients who
underwent at least one dental
extraction prior to planned
cardiac surgery from 2003 to
2013. The median time from
dental extraction to cardiac
surgery was 7 days (average 35
days).
In this study, patients who
underwent dental extraction prior
to cardiac surgery experienced an
8% incidence of major adverse
outcomes, including new heart
attack, stroke, kidney failure and
death. Overall, 3% of patients
died after dental extraction
and before the planned cardiac
surgery could be performed.
Another of the researchers went
on to say, “With the information
from our study we cannot make
a definitive recommendation
for or against dental extraction
prior to cardiac surgery. We
recommend an individualized
analysis of the expected benefit
of dental extraction prior to
surgery weighed against the risk
of morbidity and mortality as
observed in our study.”
This study, as in many “new”
studies, awakens us to consider
a departure from current lines of
thinking about specific situations.
This paradigm shift of thinking
has also been noted in the use of
prophylactic antibiotics prior to
dental procedures in those with
cardiac conditions.
Prophylactic antibiotics have
routinely been prescribed for
patients undergoing dental
work who also had existing
heart problems because it had
been accepted that there is a
link between dental bacteremia
and endocarditis. Individuals
with pre-existing heart problems
tend to have a higher incidence
of endocarditis. The American
Heart Association and others
have withdrawn support for
this practice of prophylactic
antibiotics because the danger
from overuse of antibiotics
outweighs any other potential
risks. Regular tooth brushing,
flossing, and even chewing gum
Senior Scene
Grow Stronger, Live Longer
doesn’t matter as much as the
muscle mass to reduce risk of
death.
The study jibes with one from
two years ago that determined
that BMI levels aren’t as important
as body composition -- in other
words, muscle mass.
How do seniors gain muscle
mass? It’s not easy, as we tend to
start losing muscle at about age
40.
The first step to build muscle
is to consult your doctor before
you change your diet or start any
new kind of exercise. Ask if the
following changes are correct for
you:
Protein -- While it helps build
muscle, seniors shouldn’t get
too much because it can stress
the kidneys. This is where your
doctor can help calculate how
much you should get in a day.
Carbs -- We need to burn
these for energy. Without
carbohydrates you’ll use protein
for energy, instead of using your
protein to build muscles.
Water -- You need the right
amount to help absorb the
nutrients in your food. Again,
your doctor can calculate it for
you. Measure the amount of
water you should have in a day
and keep it handy on the counter
or in the fridge.
Working Out -- The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention
has put a 126-page book online
called “Growing Stronger” for
seniors who want to start strength
training. Look for it at www.cdc.
