REFUGEES IN TODAY’S GREECE<br />
«Στην αργατιά, στη χωρατιά το χιόνι, η γρίπη, η πείνα, οι λύκοι,<br />
ποτάμια, πέλαγα, στεριές, ξολοθρεμός και φρίκη.<br />
Χειμώνας άγριος. Κι η φωτιά, καλοκαιριά στην κάμαρά μου.<br />
Ντρέπομαι για τη ζέστα μου και για την ανθρωπιά μου».<br />

Tα τελευταία χρόνια ταξιδεύω σε χώρες που δύσκολα επισκέπτεται<br />
κάποιος και φωτογραφίζω αυτά που με συγκινούν – τη ζωή των<br />
ανθρώπων και τον τρόπο που αντιμετωπίζουν τη δύσκολη κάποιες<br />
φορές καθημερινότητά τους. Δεν θα μπορούσα λοιπόν να μην<br />
προσπαθήσω να καταγράψω και το δράμα της προσφυγιάς που έφτασε<br />
για μια ακόμη φορά στην πατρίδα μας. Οι φωτογραφίες είναι από τη<br />
Λέσβο, την Κω, τη Λέρο, την Αθήνα, αλλά και από το τελευταίο τους<br />
σταθμό εδώ, την Ειδομένη.<br />
Οι εικόνες αυτών των ανθρώπων είναι μαθήματα ζωής για όλους<br />
μας και τα χαμόγελα που βλέπουμε στα πρόσωπά των παιδιών είναι<br />
η ελπίδα για το αύριο - μας θυμίζουν ότι ο κόσμος χρειάζεται ειρήνη<br />
και αγάπη, και ότι πρέπει να δώσουμε αγώνα για τα αυτονόητα ιδανικά<br />
της ζωής του ανθρώπου. Δεν θέλουν να μείνουν στην Ελλάδα, ξέρουν<br />
τα προβλήματά μας και συνεχίζουν το επικό ταξίδι τους προς στη<br />
βόρεια Ευρώπη με αξιοπρέπεια και καρτερικότητα, αβέβαιοι για το<br />
τι τους περιμένει εκεί, αλλά χαρούμενοι που τα κατάφεραν ως εδώ.<br />
Τους «αποχαιρέτησα» με μια εδραιωμένη πεποίθηση ότι πρέπει να<br />
τους βοηθήσουμε στην ώρα της μεγάλης ανάγκης τους όσο μπορούμε<br />
περισσότερο, αλλά και βαθιά συγκινημένη από τα λόγια ευγνωμοσύνης<br />
για την καλοσύνη των Ελλήνων, που άκουσα από τόσους πολλούς.<br />
Οι πρόσφυγες αναζητούν ασφαλές καταφύγιο στη Δύση εδώ και<br />
χρόνια. Πρόσφατα, ωστόσο, κάτι έχει αλλάξει. Οι χιλιάδες έχουν γίνει<br />
εκατομμύρια. Mια ασταμάτητη ροή ανθρώπων οδηγημένων από τον<br />
φόβο, την ανασφάλεια, την έλλειψη πόρων και ευκαιριών. Η απελπισία<br />
τους μπορεί να συγκριθεί μόνο με την απίστευτη αντοχή και τις ελπίδες<br />
τους.<br />
Καμία ευρωπαϊκή χώρα δεν ταλαιπωρήθηκε τόσο όσο η Ελλάδα<br />
τα τελευταία χρόνια, ενώ καμία ευρωπαϊκή χώρα δεν επέδειξε τόση<br />
ανθρωπιά σ αυτήν την προσφυγική κρίση. Η Ελλάδα έχοντας βιώσει<br />
τη προσφυγιά και τη μετανάστευση, βλέπει σήμερα την ιστορία<br />
να επαναλαμβάνεται. Πολλοί από μας είναι παιδιά και εγγόνια<br />
προσφύγων. Καταλαβαίνουμε τους λόγους και τις αιτίες που κάνουν<br />
τους ανθρώπους να εγκαταλείπουν την πατρίδα τους και ξέρουμε<br />
ότι η διέλευση προσφύγων από τον τόπο μας γίνεται από ανάγκη<br />
και όχι από επιλογή. Μέσα σε μια εξαιρετικά δύσκολη οικονομική<br />
συγκυρία, ο ελληνικός λαός έδειξε έμπρακτη αλληλεγγύη απέναντι<br />
στα αυξανόμενα κύματα προσφύγων που φτάνουν στη χώρα μας.<br />
Εθελοντές, ανθρωπιστικές οργανώσεις, δεκάδες ετερόκλητοι<br />
άνθρωποι, έβαλαν πίσω τις ζωές τους, τις δουλειές τους και<br />
συνεργάστηκαν για να συνδράμουν τα καραβάνια των προσφύγων<br />
που συνέρρεαν στα σύνορα, συνάνθρωποι και συμπαραστάτες τους, με<br />
αστείρευτο ανθρωπισμό.<br />
Ωστόσο καμιά χώρα δεν μπορεί να αντιμετωπίσει από μόνη της αυτή<br />
την προσφυγική κρίση που βιώνουμε και η οποία είναι η χειρότερη από<br />
τον Β΄Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. Οι ροές των προσφύγων και μεταναστών<br />
δεν σταματούν στα σύνορα αλλά μόνο στην πηγή – στις χώρες που<br />
σήμερα τους αναγκάζουν να φύγουν.<br />

That does not pause to differentiate between the attacker<br />
and the person running from the very same thing you are.<br />
Pray for a world where people walking across countries for months,<br />
their only belongings upon their backs,<br />
are told they have no place to go.<br />
Say a prayer for Paris by all means,<br />
but pray more, for the world that does not have a prayer<br />
for those who no longer have a home to defend.<br />
For a world that is falling apart in all corners,<br />
and not simply in the towers and cafes we find so familiar.”<br />

Interest in photography came late in my life. I began travelling and<br />
photographing places and mainly people that were distant from the<br />
“modern” western way of living and their endurance and optimism in<br />
facing their everyday problems. Now that the refugee crisis has reached<br />
Greece once more, I tried to document this dramatic situation. The<br />
pictures are taken in Kos, Lesvos, Leros, Athens and in their last stop<br />
here, the border of Idomeni, in Northern Greece.<br />
The images of these people are life lessons for all of us and the smiles<br />
we see in the faces of the children represent our hope for tomorrow<br />
while they reminds us that the world needs peace and love - that we<br />
should struggle for the ideals we were taking for granted until now.<br />
They don’t want to stay in Greece, they are aware of our problems - they<br />
continue their epic journey to Northern Europe, uncertain for what lies<br />
ahead, but still happy they managed it until here. I am deeply moved by<br />
their words and gratitude regarding the kindness that the Greek people<br />
has shown towards them.<br />
Rarely in modern history have so many been so desperate to flee,<br />
reshaping Europe and the world. Their journey began in war, poverty<br />
and oppression. They are fleeing, by the hundreds of thousands, from<br />
Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, Somalia, Iran and Pakistan, a ceaseless flow<br />
of humanity driven by wars, insecurity, lack of opportunity and fear for<br />
the newly formed Islamic State. Their desperation is only matched by<br />
their fortitude and sense of hope.<br />
No European country has been as battered as Greece in recent years<br />
and no European country has responded with as much consistent<br />
humanity to the refugee crisis. Greece experienced refugees and<br />
immigrants problems in the past and history now repeats itself. Many<br />
of us are children or grandchildren of refugees. We know the reasons<br />
that make these people flee their country and we know that this is not<br />
an option but a necessity. Volunteers, NGOs, simple people, left their<br />
lives and works aside and cooperated to help these caravan of refugees<br />
coming to our borders with inexhaustible humanism as fellows and<br />
supporters.<br />
No country can face this problem alone, a problem that is the biggest<br />
since World War II, and it’s growing. Inside this overwhelming crisis are<br />
the individual human stories — of care and family, in the face of lost<br />
education, lost home, lost future. The refugee flow can only be stopped<br />
in their own countries that are making them flee.
