Side Trips 

We were being indecisive after lunch 

on Sunday about what the rest of 

our day should look like. Once 

we made the decision to head to Okoboji, 

our daughter quickly 

made plans with her 

friends — they decided 

to take the wave 

runner out for the first 

time of the season. 

The three girls were 

out for nearly two 

hours, heading all 

over West Okoboji 

before they returned 

to the dock, ready to 

go with us in the boat. 

Two of the three girls 

were wet, casualties of tight turns and quick 

changes in speed. But they had agreed that 

before the day was over all three would 

get in the lake and they wanted pictures as 

proof. That’s where a ride with the parents 

in the boat became part of their plan. 

My husband found a calm spot, I took 

aim with the camera and the girls lined 

up on the swim platform. Holding hands 

and standing backwards so I could capture 

the looks on their faces, they counted to 

three and jumped. All three of them. I half 

expected someone to change her mind 

and break the chain, but they all took the 

plunge. 

They scrambled out quickly, not bothering 

to use the ladder. Wrapped in towels but 

still dripping, they immediately checked 

the photos I had taken and began snapping 

them to their friends. 

While we were eating dinner later that 

night it occurred to us to check the water 

temperature — 52 degrees. 

What a way to start the summer. It can

Dickinson County Nature 

Center hosts hike on May 24 

There’s a new place to explore in 

the Iowa Great Lakes. 

The Dickinson County Conservation 

Board has a new property and 

they are inviting you to come and explore 

the area on their next monthly 

Hike the Wild program on Tuesday, 

May 24. 

The hike will take place at Little 

Sioux Savanna, which is on the Little 

Sioux River. 

Participants will meet up at the 

Dickinson County Nature Center at 

9:30 a.m. and then the group will caravan 

out to the Little Sioux Savanna 

site. 

The hike, as always, will be led by 

a Dickinson County Conservation 

Board naturalist. All of the Hike the 

Wild programs teach the participants 

about the area they are are hiking 

through as well as other important 

topics. 

“We will be talking a little about 

river ecology and oak savanna ecosystems. 

We will be exploring some 

of the plants and animals that live 

in that oak savanna ecosystem,” said 

Charles Vigdal, a naturalist with the 

Dickinson County Conservation 

Board. 

The Hike the Wild programs are all 

about getting people outdoors enjoying 

the natural world around them 

as well as offering up an educational 

component to go along with that. The 

events are free to the public and everyone 

is invited. 

“This event is for anybody who likes 

the outdoors. It’s a chance to explore 

some of Dickinson County’s wilder 

areas,” Vigdal said. “For this one we 

will be doing some off-the-path hiking 

so wear good shoes and dress for 

the weather.” 

The Hike the Wild programs will 

continue throughout the summer 

months and through the end of the 

year. Some of the upcoming hikes will 

give people a chance to explore even 

more areas of the Iowa Great Lakes 

that they might never have visited 

before. 

In June, Hike the Wild will be at the 

Barney Peterson Memorial Trail and 

everyone will follow the Iowa Department 

of Natural Resources interpretive 

trail located near Gull Point State 

Park. July’s event will take place at 

Westport Park, which is a quiet fishing 

hole. They’ll be teaching fishing basics 

and people will get the opportunity to 

catch a big one. 

The Hike the Wild programs aren’t 

just fun for the participants, they are 

also fun for the naturalists and the 

staff at the nature center. 

“It is always fun for us, getting out 

and observing nature. You never know 

what you will find,” Vigdal said. F

Family fun at the flea markets 

Treasure Village among a trio of locations hosting events 

Memorial Day Weekend is fast 

approaching and for three 

vendors that means gearing 

up for the flea market at Treasure Village. 

Wise Antiques of Sioux Rapids, 

IA, World’s Best Meats of Andrew, IA, 

and Kahl’s Kettle Korn have all been 

setting up shop at Treasure Village for 

a decade or more and are eager to get 

back for the 2016 season. 

The flea market at Treasure Village, 

like those at Vick’s Corner World and 

the Dickinson County Expo Center, 

will be open Saturday, Sunday and 

Monday, May 28-30, for Memorial 

Day Weekend. Treasure Village’s flea 

market will specifically be open from 

9 a.m.-6 p.m. each day. 

Jim Wise has been to Treasure Village 

for at least 12 years and will start 

hauling items from his buildings in 

downtown Sioux Rapids on Thursday 

to his 65 feet of flea market space. 

“It’s a lot of work and a lot of fun,” 

Wise said. “The atmosphere is great 

and so are the people.” 

Wise brings a variety of unique and 

unusual antiques and has a wide array 

of kids pedal cars and antique furniture. 

He also goes back and forth between 

Sioux Rapids each day, so he’ll 

often bring in new items from day to 

day and can accommodate special requests 

if he has something back home 

and can bring it up the next day. 

“I do that all the time. It’s the nice 

thing about going home each evening,” 

Wise said. “If I have something 

that will fit a specific request I’ll certainly 

do what I can. It’s a lot of fun 

working with people and other vendors. 

We create a lot of fond memories 

that way.” 

Food often creates fond memories 

too and a couple vendors have been 

doing just that at Treasure Village for 

many years. 

World’s Best Meats has 14 flavors of 

jerky ready for Treasure Village visitors 

while Kahl’s Kettle Korn has been 

bringing their signature staple for two 

generations now. 

The Sheehan family started World’s 

Best Meats in 1995 in Andrew, IA, and 

has ten flavors of beef jerky along with 

four flavors of bison jerky. Tim Sheehan 

says the original is still the top 

seller but that teriyaki and honeydew 

are getting close. 

“We’ve been going to Treasure Village 

since about 2002 and it’s a really 

good location where we see a blend 

of new people and repeate customers 

each year. It’s about as nice a combination 

of customers as you’re going to 

get,” Sheehan said. 

Sheehan enjoys his visits so much 

he’s even entertained the idea of 

bringing the jerky out for Winter 

Games, which would be quite a commitment 

considering he’s coming 

from the opposite end of the state. But 

it’s the great customers and relationship 

with the organizers that makes 

every trip worthwhile. 

Coming from a little more close by 

are Dave and Bonnie Kahl with Kahl’s 

Kettle Korn of Sioux Falls. Dave’s parents 

cooked the kettle corn until they 

were 85 years old and now Dave and 

Bonnies have taken the torch for a 

new generation. 

“My parents loved meeting the 

people and that’s something we continue 

to enjoy,” Dave Kahl said. “It’s 

all about family at Treasure Village 

and it’s great getting to know all these 

people that we see each year. It’s also 

fun to see the other vendors that we 

haven’t seen all winter and right away 

to we get a to see a couple times right 

in a row.” 

The Kahls offer one original flavor 

of kettle corn as well as bottled water. 

“We haven’t changed a thing in all 

these years,” Kahl said. “We keep it simple 

with one flavor and supply people 

for their campfires and boat rides.” 

They also have a small five-pound 

Yorkie named Frankie who Dave says 

really brings the people in. 

“He does a few tricks and I think 

some people might come just to see 

him!” Kahl said with a laugh.

of antiques there will be plenty to 

peruse from multiple vendors at Treasure 

Village and throughout the Iowa

Live music around the Lakes for Memorial Day weekend 

Music and Memorial Day weekend 

go hand-in-hand in the 

Iowa Great Lakes. 

And Captain’s Getaway has been 

synonymous with live music across 

nearly two decades in Arnolds Park. 

They’ll be one of numerous locations 

hosting a variety of bands and musicians 

over the course of the holiday 

weekend. 

“This will be our 19th summer and 

we’ve had live music every summer 

in that time, it’s really who we are,” 

owner Jason Christiansen said. 

Kicking off this summer season 

will be GB Leighton on Thursday and 

Friday, May 26-27, and Chris Brooks 

Band on Saturday and Sunday, May 

28-29. Both bands hail from the Minneapolis 

area. 

“GB Leighton has been a staple here 

and is huge in the Minneapolis area. 

He plays a style that I’d call American 

rock,” Christiansen said. “And Chris

Christiansen noted that they’re always

bands they can and to have a variety 

that appeals to a lot of people. It’s 

something co-owner Wade Daggett 

echoed as well. 

“Music has such a long history in 

this area and we want to offer the best 

in live entertainment and something 

we enjoy ourselves,” Daggett said. 

“We’re always seeking out live music 

when we’re on vacation or visiting 

other places so we try to offer what 

we’d seek out ourselves and get a good 

mix of what people enjoy.” 

They both agree that their musical 

acts slated for Memorial Day weekend 

fit that bill. 

“GB is one of the best anyone can 

get in this area and one of my favorites 

that get here regularly,” Daggett said. 

“Chris Brooks, we found out about 

when they played at the park several 

years ago. They’re both great and 

perfect to be kicking off the summer

The world of Ukiyo-e 

inspires her art, with complex 

patterns and flowing shapes 

drawn from nature. The elegant 

portrayal of the Japanese kimono’s 

contrasting patterns is a 

recurring theme in her work. As 

in nature, an essence of beauty 

is revealed in many varied 

ways.”

It’s not often that you can see an artist’s 

whole career laid out in front 

of you. You can see their start, their 

evolution and where they are right 

this minute. But that’s exactly what is 

on display now at the Pearson Lakes 

Art Center for artist Cynthia Whynott. 

“Cynthia Whynott-A 40 Year Retrospective” 

shows the work of this 

Michigan-born and educated artist. 

She now currently resides in Minnesota 

and the show covers her entire 

career. 

“It starts with her work in the ’80s 

when she was studying and goes 

all the way to the present day. That 

makes it very interesting,” said Britney 

Hansen, the visual arts director at the 

Pearson Lakes Art Center. “There’s a 

lot of variation and for me as a curator 

or, even as an art lover, I love to 

see that evolution of an artist. I love 

seeing that the artist is willing to keep 

taking chances and evolving.” 

As you walk through the exhibit you 

can travel through Whynott’s evolution 

as an artist. 

“In the ’80s while she was studying 

she also taught color theory so 

she does a lot with color variation 

and gradation. The way the light hits 

the paintings are very interesting and 

draws the viewers in,” Hansen said. 

“She recreates a light source inside the 

painting. There’s always an external 

light source but there also seems to 

be a light source inside the painting 

by the way she’s able to manipulate 

color.” 

During that same period, Hansen 

describes Whynott’s work with lithographs, 

typesetting and papermaking. 

“During the artist reception someone 

asked her about her inspiration 

and she said that she used to spend 

hours and hours in the basement of 

libraries.” 

“Her works are very rich in patterns 

and she often would take a section 

or something she saw in a book and 

recreate it over and over again,” Hansen 

said. “That was very relatable. The 

artist didn’t have to travel across the 

world for inspiration.” 

Later on, Whynott did a lot of work 

that was inspired by kimonos in 

which she usesda lot of close-up views 

of a kimono and much of the work 

utilized gold leaf. 

“Her newest work zooms out the 

painting so you can see a full figure 

of a women dancing in a kimono in 

“Flower Dance.” I think it is the most 

striking in the gallery and it’s totally illuminated 

in gold leaf,” Hansen said. 

What makes this 40-year retrospective 

even more astounding is the fact 

that Whynott is still creating art at all. 

Her last exhibit was in 2000 and in 

2007, Whynott was in an accident that 

could have ended her artistic career. 

“She was in a car accident and suffered 

a brain stem injury. Initially 

when she was recovering, her eyesight 

was off. She couldn’t draw proportionally 

or paint. She couldn’t do the 

intricate design that she had been doing,” 

Hansen said. “As the years went 

by she kept persevering through and 

eventually had eye surgery and was 

able to paint again.” 

So being able to see this artist’s 

work as a retrospective is breathtaking 

in itself, but knowing what the artist 

has gone through to continue creating 

makes seeing her work an even more 

emotional experience, according to 

Hansen. F

Murder & MYSTERY 

Sioux Center Arts brings 

comedic murder/mystery 

to the stage 

Nothing goes together better 

than mystery, murder and a 

little slapstick comedy. 

It’s a brilliant combination 

that you can see for yourself in 

the upcoming Sioux Center Arts 

community theatre production of 

John Bishop’s “The Musical Comedy 

Murders of 1940.” 

The show will open on Friday, 

May 27 at 7:30 p.m. for a 

three-show run. The other two 

performances rounding out the 

weekend will both take place 

on Saturday, May 28. The first at 

1:30 p.m. with an evening performance 

scheduled for 7:30 p.m. 

This is the second year in a row 

that Sioux Center Arts has put on 

a community theatre production 

and they hope to keep the ball 

rolling. 

“We are trying to revive the theatre 

scene in Sioux Center,” said 

Bethany Wallace, the arts director 

at Sioux Center Arts. 

“Last year we did ‘Quilters’ and 

that was the first community play 

that we’ve done in quite a while. 

This is our second year and we 

have hopes to make it an annual 

thing.” 

Rehearsals for the show began 

in April and the romping comedy 

features five women and five 

men. 

“I think that everyone has a 

little experience with theatre in 

some capacity, some more than 

others, but I’m so impressed with 

their commitment to making the 

show a success,” Wallace said. 

Even though the word “musical” 

is in the title, this show isn’t 

actually a musical. 

“It’s a play about a musical. 

There are a couple of short musical 

pieces in it, but really it’s a 

comedy. It’s a farce. It’s fast. It’s 

funny,” Wallace said. 

The show takes place in a mansion 

in 1940. Without spoiling 

the plot, a murder occurs seemingly 

without anyone noticing 

when a group of guests comes to 

the mansion for a backer’s audition 

to the musical “White House 

Merry-Go-Round.” 

The actors soon fall in and out 

of love. They also quickly learn 

that everyone who has been 

invited was a part of the production 

team that made “Manhattan 

Holiday.” During that production 

the elusive Stage Door Slasher 

murdered three women. 

Thanks to a number of secret 

passageways, the over-the-top 

personalities found in the world 

of theatre, and a good dose of 

comedy, “The Musical Comedy 

Murders of 1940” will keep you 

both laughing and on the edge 

of your seat to discover the murderer’s 

identity. 

“Even though there’s a lot of 

death, it’s over-the-top comedy 

so it’s still light-hearted,” Wallace 

said. “That’s why we are recommending 

it for ages 8 and up. 

Most kids and families will recognize 

that it’s pretty silly and just 

plain fun.”

Spencer hosts ‘Friendraiser’ walk 

May is Older Americans Month – an opportunity 

to celebrate the strength and vitality of older 

Americans, to raise awareness of aging issues, 

and promote healthy lifestyles. 

This year’s theme, “Blaze a Trail for Aging” will be 

recognized by the Iowa Area Agencies on Aging with a 

statewide “friendraiser” walk. Elderbridge Area Agency 

on Aging will host walks in 10 of their service area counties 

on Thursday, May 26, including Clay County and 

Spencer. Check-in at the Spencer Activity Center begins at 

9 a.m. followed by a short program at 9:45 a.m. with the 

walk starting at 10 a.m. The short walk is free and open to 

all ages. 

To be eligible to walk, all individuals must sign a registration/release 

form prior to the start of the walk. Registration/release 

forms are available at the Spencer Activity 

Center by contacting Teresa Morales or at the Elderbridge 

office located at 714 10th Avenue East in Spencer.

7th annual ICS Tractor 

Ride 

The Inwood Christian School will be hosting 

the 7th Annual ICS Tractor Ride on 

Saturday, May 28. The ride will consist 

of 40-plus miles of scenic back roads through 

N’West Iowa and Southeast South Dakota. 

Breakfast before the ride in Inwood and a 

homemade noon meal served at the Larchwood 

City Park are included in the entry fee. Prizes 

will be awarded.
