Anele Valela inducted for second term as ODU president
WELL-KNOWN Kingite,
Christian, musician, family
man and just a 'good man'
Anele Vanela was inducted for
a second term as president of
the National Old Dalian Union.
Anele was inducted by Dale
head Mike Eddy, at the 155th
Old Dalian Reunion
celebrations held last
weekend.
His induction speech
contained just two simple
words – 'Thank you- What
most of us know as the magic
words'.
'Well I hope these magic
words are going to work
wonders, because my
intention is for all of you to
know that you are truly
appreciated.
'We live in a time where there
is so much instability,
ungratefulness, selfishness,
where there is so much going
wrong that we get caught in an
aura of negativity. 'It is a time
like this that we pause, reflect
and give thanks,' he said.
Continued from Front Page...
'With that said, I firstly want to
thank the King of Kings and
Lord of Lords, my personal
friend, Jesus Christ.
'Today we are here to
celebrate 155 years of Dale
College and on 24 July 2016
we will celebrate the 123 rd
anniversary of the Old Dalian
Union.
'All of this is because God
has allowed, has favoured us
and has enabled us to reach
this milestone.
'155 years does not just
happen by hook or crook,”
said Anele.
He said it is a known fact that
children go to school and
within no time, they look
forward to the day they leave
school, to never look back
and to have absolutely no
desire to associate
themselves with their school.
'The same is not true about
most Dalians. For most us
this Dale College shall
forever be a part of our lives.
'With that I wish to thank my
fellow Old Dalians for loving
our school. Thank you
gentlemen for the support
you have given to the Old
Dalian Union.
'Some of you have donated
large sums of money to the
ODU in support of our vision,
which is to uphold, nurture
and preserve the legacy of
Dale College. 'Some of you
have invested your
resources, your time, skills
and wisdom to the advance
the cause of the ODU.
'Your service has not gone
unnoticed. I want you to know
that without your valuable
contribution – we would not
have any of this,' he said.
As Old Dalians we have a
natural progression – where
every single year our
organisation grows, as we
welcome into the ODU new
members from each grade
12 year group.
'With this I mean, the Old
Dalian Union does not and
cannot exist independently
from Dale Junior and from
Dale College.
“I wish to thank Mike Eddy
for his commitment to Dale
College. '
Mr Eddy has been at the
school since 1991 and has
been Headmaster for the
past13 years.
'Many people only have bad
things to say about our Dale
College, many of whom have
never even set foot on these
premises.
'Most people do not know
what it takes to run a school
like Dale College. To you Mr
Eddy and your staff, thank
you for being such great
stewards.
'By looking after this school
and empowering our young
Dalians, you are making a
direct contribution to the
ODU. The future of the Old
Dalian Union is secured,'
said Anele.
“Thank you to the many
people, Old Dalians and their
family members who have
come from all over the
country, some of whom have
come from overseas to be
here.
'Our friends and our families
who have come from near
and from far to be part this
celebration. Thank you for
giving up your busy
schedules and setting aside
time to be with us. Enjoy the
festivities.
'Let us together make
Reunion 2016 an event to
remember forever,'
concluded Anele.

FRIDAY 20 MAY 2016 THE BUGLE 3
Reunion Assembly marked by Per Ardua awards
and second term in office for ODU president
THERE were several highlights
see in the 1956 group'.
'60 years after School. At
this point the wives probably
need to be congratulated for
all sorts of things,' said Eddy.
He thanked George Shaw
and Past National President,
Ivan Venter, for
co-ordinating this group.
' Amongst them is Vernon
Sachs who has traveled from
Australia to be with his ex
school mates. Fantastic to
have you with us'.
' The 1966 group was coordinated
by Peter Miles. 50
FRIDAY 20 MAY 2016 THE BUGLE 5
Lavendar House and Round Table donate to Kuselo
DONORS: Roshnee Chetty and Danielle de Ridder with Kuselo CYCC
director Amanda Coetzee at a handover of items for the Centre last week
A plea from Kuselo Child and
Youth Care Centre (Kuselo
CYCC) for help to get the
Centre into shape was sent
out via the Bugle and Keep it
in King for the community to
aid them in getting much
needed items to repair the
building as well as other
household items needed
which will be used on a daily
basis for the children that will
be admitted into resedential
care.
'These children are abused
and abandoned and need
our support, we have been
visiting this Centre on and off
for a while now, seeing the
progress made in such a
short time with limited hands
doing the work is remarkable,”
said Lavendar House
owner Tia de Ridder, who
also represented Round Table
at a handover at Kuselo
CYCC last week.
“The Centre still needs a lot
of work, but seeing how
beautiful the rooms look and
the passion that goes into the
final touches to the premises
is heart warming.
'This Centre will have approximately
60 children and
we as the community felt that
we could assist and support
this very good cause.
'It is a great inspiration to us
all that we can in such a
small way be part in helping
the centre along so that the
children in need will be provided
with a home where
they will be safe and cared
for said,' said Tia.
Tia and her staff donated
much needed crockery and
various household items to
the Centre last week.
The items were handed over
to Kuselo CYCC director
Amanda Coetzee last Friday
at the Centre.
Amanda also said that she
appreciated members of the
community coming to the
Centre to offer assistance
and advice as each item donated
is needed and valued.
Staff from Lavender house
were taken through the Centre
and informed of what is
going to take place and the
services that will be provided
to the children once the Centre
is up and
running.Members from
Round Table through Buildmor
donated much needed
ceiling boards, paint and
PVC flooring for the kitchen.
“These items were donated
as part of the"lets fix our
home project" on a previous
visit to the Centre were the
needs were identified.
“A very special thank you to
Round Table, Lavender
House and Buildmor for coming
to the aid of the centre.
'Without your commitment
and support we would not be
in a position to get all the
repairs done in time before
the final inspection date
which has been scheduled
for the end of May after which
we will be able admit residential
children.
'You have truly contributed to
the founding stage of the
Centre and for that we thank
you,' concluded Amanda

DA Ward 37 Candidate
elect Dharmesh Dhaya
explains how small
changes can make a big
difference in the world.
WE all want a better world yet
most people are
overwhelmed when it comes
to planning and following
through with their plans.
Ward 37 which comprises
KWT and the surrounding
areas is a big challenge for
me. It covers many different
areas and types of
communities. As your DA
candidate it is my duty and
indeed my responsibility to
visit and talk to as many of my
supporters as possible. Even
more important is for me to
talk to those that oppose me.
Politics is about give and take.
One day I can be talking to a
business owner right here in
King discussing politics and
looking for solutions to help
them grow their business and
how I can help achieve that
once in office. That same
afternoon I could be deep in
a rural area outside town
meeting a group of village
elders looking at basic
service delivery issues. My
mandate of giving people
freedom, fairness and
opportunity takes me far and
wide.
There are times when I am
completely overwhelm and
indeed don’t know where to
start my day or even how to
tackle a problem be it large or
small, simple or complicated.
I work on the premise that
small changes can
collectively lead to big
change globally.
If I can help at least 1 person
a day as your candidate and
in turn that person can help
another, then within a month
I would have made a
tangible positive difference
to my community.
Helping to clean up a street,
doing door to door in
Tolofenyi or even sitting in a
community meeting right
here in King can at times be
overwhelming. Proper
planning and working in
small manageable junks is
how things get done. A diary
in my life has become a
priority.
Politics is a brutal game and
it will get even tougher come
the 3rd of August elections.
Politicians will offer you the
world in order to secure your
vote but I urge you to
question them and indeed
question me. Ask me what is
my plan to deliver on my
promises. Get a detailed
breakdown and see how my
small changes will lead to
bigger and better things in
our ward.
Hold me accountable and
indeed all politicians. If in the
FRIDAY 20 MAY 2016 THE BUGLE 9
Several injured in
Maitland Road accident
MANGLED: Rescue workers use the jaws of life to free the trapped driver of
this Red Golf who was involved in an accident at the Maitland Road/Joubert
street intersection on Sunday
SEVERAL people are believed
to have been injured,
some seriously in a three car
pile up at the Maitland
Road/Joubert Street intersection
on Sunday afternoon.
The driver of a Red Golf was
trapped in the wreck for more
than two hours as BCMM
firefighters and Rescue
workers battled to free him.
'It is a complicated procedure,'
said a firefighter on the
scene, adding that the driver
had suspected fractured legs
and 'we had to be careful
when removing him so as not
to cause any further harm.'
The accident occurred at
about 1pm. According to the
driver of a Dodge Caliber,
who claimed he worked at
TruFM, he was driving up
Maitland road when the Golf
apparantly jumped the stop
street at the intersection and
collided with his vehicle. He
was not hurt and not prepared
to speak to the media
further.
The impact swung both cars
around, causing the Caliber
to crash into a stationary
Ford Ranger parked on the
Joubert side of the intersection.
It could not be established
if there were any
passengers in the two vehicles.
The driver of the Ranger said
as he approached the stop
street he saw this Red Golf
coming down Joubert street
'at high speed'.
“I could see trouble and tried
to drive off but it was to
late...I got caught up in an
accident through no fault of
my own,” he said.
According to an eye-witness
one of the passenger walked
away from the Golf while
several others were taken to
hospital by ambulance. This
could not be confirmed by
the Bugle.
Further allegations on the
scene indicated that the driver
of the Golf attended a
prestige school in town and
some of the passengers in
the car were at the same
school.
This could also not be confirmed
by the Bugle.
Police are investigating a
case of reckless and or negligent
driving as well as a
drunken driving charge, according
to a police source.
Isibindi Community Programme and Kuselo
CYCC to host Child Protection week
THE Isibindi Community Programme
has partnered with
Kuselo Child and Youth Care
Centre (Kuselo CYCC) to
host a range of events and
activities for child protection
week scheduled for between
the 27th May 2016 to 3rd
June 2016.
During this week many children
will be counselled, take
part in various programmes
such as special doll, rape and
trauma therapy, drug and
substance abuse as well as
play therapy activities.
'It is our view that through
play more constructive and
collective backgrounds into
pertinent information can be
retrieved from the child as
they are relaxed and do not
feel pressured for information,'
said Kuselo CYCC
director Amanda Coetzee.
'This gives the children free
time to open up and voice
their abuse experiences
through mutual trust.'
Extensive family counselling
and family re-unification programmes
will also take place
as well as family orientation
and early intervention sessions
with families will be
conducted.
'In doing this, it could possible
save a child from violence
and abuse, as the circle of
abuse often starts at home,
escalating into child abuse,
from the abused child it then
escalates into drug and
substance abuse, this leave
the child vulnerable to sexual
molestation and rape.
'The end result in some cases
– is suicide.
'It is a sad reality that abuse
in all forms, especially child
abuse is on the rise in the
Border Region,' said Coetzee.
'We ask that persons attend
our opening day for child
protection week and offer any
assistance to ensure that the
child benefit from our services.'
event is held:
Give Blood this winter
NOW that winter is upon us, the
South African National Blood
Service (SANBS) anticipates that
blood stocks will fall below the
desired level required for meeting
daily demand.
To ensure that a sufficient supply of
blood remains available for
recipients affected by different
medical conditions, SANBS must
collect 3000 units of blood every
day. Each unit of blood could save
three lives.
In addition to hiding away from the
blistering cold, donor numbers
usually slump over this period
because schools close over the
holiday period and that is where
many blood drives take place.
Colds and flu are other reasons for
donors being unable to donate
blood.
High-school learners are a crucial
group of donors. Nationally,
teenagers aged 16 to 19 constitute
21% of SANBS’ total active donor
base which is currently over 430
000. They have taken the bold step
to join the many men and women
who go out of their way to donate
Excursion to the Fire Station
AT THE FIRE STATION: Learners from Grade 1 and 2 St Thomas junior
campus visited the fire station last week
ON Thursday the 5th of May,
grade 1 and 2 learners of St
Thomas (Junior Campus)
were treated to an exciting
visit to the BCMM fire station.
'The learners enjoyed the
walk to the fire station. The
excursion was very informative.
The fire fighters demonstrated
to the learners the use
of the apparatus in the fighting
of fires,' said St Thomas
spokesperson Veronica Karshagen.
'The learners also took part
in releasing water into the
hoses used to put out a fire.
'The learners were thrilled to
be taken for a ride on the red
fire-engine. It was indeed
very educational and the
FRIDAY 20 MAY 2016 THE BUGLE 15
HIV/Aids still a threat in our communities
IT is so surprising to find that
in this day and age there are
still people who are finding it
difficult to accept their HIV
statuses.
I see young people drowning
their sorrows with intoxicating
substances (i.e liquor,
drugs, dagga etc), trying by
all means to forget about the
things that trouble them.
The main challenge which
still revolves around the issue
of HIV/AIDS is the stigma
associated with it.
There is still a certain group
of people in our communities
who tend to judge the people
who are infected with the virus
and that results in them
having low self-esteem, and
makes them think that there
is actually something wrong
with them.
As an Aids Activist who has
now been living with the HIV
virus for 7 full years, I believe
that the HIV virus should not
be regarded as a death sentence,
it is not the end of the
world.
Diagnosis of HIV virus in
one’s bloodstream should
not shatter anyone’s dreams.
If we find peace within our
souls, accept the things we
cannot change, adapt a new
mentality about the virus and
not allow members of our
society to judge us, I believe
that we can conquer the
HIV/AIDS stigma.
It is however not the end of
your life but the beginning of
a new life’s journey worth living.
I am a living testimony; I have
achieved dreams and am still
on the way to achieve even
more.
I believe that I am destined
for greatness. I am a qualified
Attorney, Founder/ Director
of Nduna Attorneys, a
mother, an Entrepreneur, and
a Motivational Speaker.
There is no need to give up
on those dreams. Continue
to dream, do not limit yourself.
Life is happening now
.One author, Ruth Casey
once said, “It only takes one
person to change your life -
YOU!”. If I did it, so you can.
saying is perfect.
Annelise de Jager, patron of
Paddy and Murphy
are havin' a pint in
the pub, when
some scuba divers
come on the TV.
Paddy says,
"Murphy, why is it
them deep sea
divers always sit
on the side of the
boat with them air
tanks on their
backs, and fall
backwards out of
the boat?" Murphy
thinks for a minute
then says, "That's
easy. It's 'cos if
they fell forwards,
they'd still be in the
friggin boat!"
There's a blond
and a brunette in a
car. The brunette
is driving while the
blonde is in the
passenger seat.
They're going
down a steep hill
when the brunette
realizes that the
brakes don't work.
The brunette tells
the blonde that the
brakes don't work
and they will drive
off the side of the
cliff because they
failed to stop. The
blonde then
replies, "Don't
worry! There's a
stop sign ahead."

20 THE BUGLE FRIDAY 20 MAY 2015
Good turn out at Parkrun number 13
PARKRUN no 13 held on
Saturday 14th May had a
good turnout of 123 runners
despite the Dale College
Reunion happening.
'A number of runners from
East London travelled up to
King and had a great time. All
were full of praise for our
immaculate golf course and
well organised event .
'We would like to thank the
KWT Golf Club once again for
the use of their facilities and
fantastic support by their
staff,' said organiser Mike
Webb.
'Parkrun would not be possible
without you!
The day was nice and cool
which led to some nice fast
times being recorded and a
few personal bests achieved.
The field was once again led
home by Sizwe Ngqoba with
Melikhaya Dyubele 2nd and
Msimelelo Fiko 3rd.
The ladies were led home by
Delarrise Christian, a first time
runner and JUNIOR in a
fantastic time of 25.10 minutes.
2nd place was Andrea Saxton
, a visitor from EL and 3rd Kim
Williams .
This coming Saturday the 21
st of May, we will be having
a Pink Fairy run in support of
the King Williams Town SPCA.
Please feel free to wear
something pink and dress up
as much as possible . We will
have a prize for the best
dressed .
As a Parkrun organization we
are not allowed to charge
anything to attend but we
would like to show our support
for the Pink Fairy campaign
and the SPCA by dressing
up in pink for the SPCA in
King .
Please feel free to make a
“voluntary “donation to the
King SPCA on Saturday if you
wish however .!!!!!!!!
Please note that the starting
time is 08.00 SHARP ……
please be early so that we
can get all the
announcements done in time
Teacher: "Kids, what does the chicken
give you?"
Student: "Meat!"
Teacher: "Very good! Now what does
the pig give you?"
Student: "Bacon!"
Teacher: "Great! And what does the fat
cow give you?"
Student: "Homework!"
A child asked his father, "How were
people born?" So his father said,
"Adam and Eve made babies, then
their babies became adults and made
babies, and so on." The child then
went to his mother, asked her the
same question and she told him, "We
were monkeys then we evolved to
become like we are now." The child ran
back to his father and said, "You lied to
me!" His father replied, "No, your mom
was talking about her side of the
family."
breaks down?
My friend thinks he is smart. He told
me an onion is the only food that
makes you cry, so I threw a coconut at
his face.
Reaching the end of a job interview,
the Human Resources Officer asks a
young engineer fresh out of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
"And what starting salary are you
looking for?" The engineer replies, "In
the region of $125,000 a year,
depending on the benefits package."
The interviewer inquires, "Well, what
would you say to a package of five
weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full
medical and dental, company matching
retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a
company car leased every two years,
say, a red Corvette?" The engineer sits
up straight and says, "Wow! Are you
kidding?" The interviewer replies,
"Yeah, but you started it."
Mr. and Mrs. Brown had two sons. One
was named Mind Your Own Business
& the other was named Trouble. One
day the two boys decided to play hide
and seek. Trouble hid while Mind Your
Own Business counted to one
hundred. Mind Your Own Business
began looking for his brother behind
garbage cans and bushes. Then he
started looking in and under cars until
a police man approached him and
asked, "What are you doing?" "Playing
a game," the boy replied. "What is your
name?" the officer questioned. "Mind
Your Own Business." Furious the
policeman inquired, "Are you looking
for trouble?!" The boy replied, "Why,
yes."

FRIDAY 20 MAY 2016 THE BUGLE 21
Race Preparation
I thought with Comrades
Marathon around the corner
this might be an apt time to
discuss final race preparation.
This goes for ALL races
regardless of distance and
the level you are competing
at however. If the race or
event is important to you then
it is important to prepare
properly !!
Be it a Parkrun, trail run, MTB
event , fun run or Comrades
its all the same.
It is vitally important for any
race preparation to firstly
have a goal in mind. It is no
good going to a race without
some aim.
It can be a specific time ,
distance you wish to run
without walking , or even a
specific person you wish to
beat !
I find putting my goals in
writing (maybe on the mirror
) makes it nice and tangible
and helps to motivate me!
Don’t try anything different
before the race !!! This is often
a huge mistake made by
novices.
If you have been training on
coke and bar ones the last 6
SPORTS SHORTS
...Pirates people are filled
with pride and anticipation as
two of their regulars have
managed to qualify for the Rio
Olympics (paraplegic section),
and, are guaranteed to
bring home gold medals. Rob
will be participating in the
“quintriple jump” and Peck will
do his bit in the “octripping”
jump !
...good luck, bad luck ? Ons
eie Ernie, at the recent Players
Golf Championship, was
on a down slide after day
three. Things did not get better
for him on the final day. He
started the first hole with a
bogey (one over par) and, as
On the run
with
Mike Webb
months do NOT decide to try
out all the fancy gels etc that
are at the race .
This is a recipe for disaster.
Stick to what you know works
!
Visualize the FINISH… see
yourself crossing the line and
imagine the euphoria you are
going to have. This also
helps a lot DURING the run
as well .Pack everything out
on the bed the day before
the race. Do NOT leave
anything to chance. I know
of runners who have got to
the start of Comrades and
Two Oceans and then realized
they have the wrong
takkies on !
If it is a really big event
ensure you taper properly
over the last 3 weeks…
Remember at this point
LESS IS MORE… You will
not get any fitter but you can
injure yourself or overdo it.
Rather go in to the race
slightly undertrained but well
rested than overtrained and
tired .
Lastly do what does not
come naturally to a runner
and REST !!!!
PIRATES CLUB
Buccin Ears
BY ROB ROY
he bent over to extract his
ball from the hole, a bird that
was flying past crapped on
him ! Normally this is regarded
as a sign of good luck for
things to come, It did'nt work
for Ernie. It's never worked
for the writer either – he gets
crapped on by a “bird” regularly
and, as yet, there is no
luck on the horizon...yet !
KNOW THY SIGNS ?/
Driving in King has become a
nightmare to put it mildly.
However, here are some tips
on how to understand what
to do.
Traffic lights - means a prelude
to the year end Xmas
lights.
Stop sign – means go, or
steal it for recycling.
Yield sign – means accelerate
now (,,,wheel spin is optional)
Solid white line – means an
indication of the middle of the
road.
Solid red line – means “stop
here and put your “sorry” indicators
on.
Parking bay – means, if
viewed at midnight, you get
an indication of how many
cars should be able to park in
that block.
Supermarket parking bay –
means park here at your own
risk.
Traffic circle – means go
through it any side you like.
Pedestrian crossing – means
a hazard to oncoming vehicles
who are about to jump a
“red”.
“Cull-de-sac” - means castration.
There was once a blonde woman on a
plane to Detroit. She was in the
economy class, but after takeoff, she
saw an empty seat in first class and
moved there. An attendant saw her
and said, "Excuse me, ma'am, but you
have a ticket for economy class, not
first. You cannot stay here." The
blonde replied, "I can and I will." The
attendant told the copilot, who came
and talked to the woman. "Ma'am, we
really can't have you staying in this
seat, your ticket was for economy."
….otherwise, every things
fine – enjoy your next outing
in your car while you take in a
broken view of King as to
what it might have looked like
in years gone by. Oh, the
suburbs used to look like
Queens and Albert Road this
last week – to experience this
treat, wait for the Dale Reunion
again next year.
RITZ BLITZ
...Frid – snacks and snorts at
four.
...Frid – steakhouse and
music/karaoke with Mr Bean.
...Wed – King Bottle Store
attendance draw.
AND FINALLY
There is actually a driving
school located at The Ritz,
so, if you want your wife to
learn how to drive....don't
stand in her way !
"You can't make me move." The
copilot told the captain, who tried to
talk her out of the seat but it didn't
work. Finally, a man who had heard
what had been going on told the
attendant to let him have a go at
getting the woman out of the seat
because he was married to a blonde
too, so he knew how to deal with her.
After a quick chat with her, she moved.
The shocked attendant asked him
how he did it. The man replied, "I told
her first class wasn't going to Detroit."

FRIDAY 20 MAY 2016 THE BUGLE 23
Dale beat Queens at
155th Reunion
Continued from Back Page...
After the restart Queens piled
on the pressure again but as
was the case all afternoon,
the Dale defense held firm
and queens knocked on several
passes as a result.
Eventually after 30min of
play, Queens finally got on
the score sheet from a penalty
kick by their second centre.
A mere minute later Dale regained
their 7 point buffer
after Dlngodlongo added a
penalty of his own to take the
score to 10-3 in favour of
Dale. On the stroke of halftime,
Queens looked to have
created a potential try scoring
opportunity, only to have the
final pass go to ground. Dale
captain Siyanda Am, celebrating
his 50 th cap for the
College, then picked up the
ball and sprinted all of 60m to
score in the corner. Dlongodlongo
added the difficult conversion
and Dale went into
halftime 17-3 up.
In the second half, Queens
again launched attack after
attack. But as was the case
in the first half, Dale defended
like men possessed.
Queens came within inches
of the Dale line on numerous
occasions but simply could
not get over it. No further
points were added in the
match and Dale ran out 17-3
winners.
All those in attendance witnessed
a special defensive
effort from the King boys.
Dale College is well known
throughout the country for
the entertaining manner in
which they run with the ball.
But on this particular occasion,
it is what they did without
the ball that people will
speak about for years to
come.
Head coach Grant Griffith
said straight after the match:
'I he could not have wished
for better.
'To beat Queens at Reunion
is just an awesome feeling....
well done to the boys.'
Dale will next play host to
Dale beat Queens at 155th Reunion
DEFEND: Dalians tackle a Queenian in full-flight during the Dale / Queens
match played on the occasion of the 155th Old Dalian Reunion at the
weekend. Dale won 17-3 after defending for most of the 2nd half
THE Dale College first rugby
team continued with their impressive
season after an emphatic
win over Queens
College on Saturday, which
formed part of Dale’s reunion
weekend. The match was
played in front of a massive
crowd in perfect late autumn
conditions.
Queens started the game
strongly and launched multiple
attacks from inside the
Dale half. However, every
single attacking play was
thwarted by the Dalian defense.
Queens did have the
first opportunity to put points
on the board after Dale conceded
a penalty inside their
own half but the relatively
easy kick was missed.
The scoring was opened in
the 15min and it was Dale
who struck first. Scrumhalf
