CARIBANA 2016: A
ROUSING SUCCESS
from afar has concluded that
the 2016 staging of Caribana,
Barbuda’s Carnival, was
a rousing success!
Minister of Barbuda Affairs,
Arthur Nibbs, said
this year’s Caribana and the
involvement of people of
Barbuda along with a large
contingent from Antigua is
evidence that the festival is
‘getting bigger and better’.
Nibbs said he was particularly
pleased with the success
of the new event, The
Prime Minister’s Aquatic
Day’ which he believes will
now become a permanent
feature of Caribana in the
years ahead.
The Barbuda representative
also praised the improved
relationship between
the National Festivals Commission
and the Caribana
Committee which has helped
to make planning the event
much smoother. “We didn’t
flights daily with extra flights
also from SVG Air and the
non-stop ferry service for
bringing more Antiguans to
Barbuda. However, he noted
that accommodation continues
to be an issue that has to
be addressed urgently in the
interest of Caribana.
Caribana Committee
Chairman, Yannick Beazer,
said the 2016 festival surpassed
expectations in every
Calls for investment in accommodations
respect. “We had more people
taking part in the events
than in previous years. For
example, Friday’s International
Night was a success
both in terms of the performances
and the attendance,”
he stated. He also noted that
the Soca Monarch show continues
to grow by leaps and
bounds while the Calypso
Show continues to hold its
own as one of the favourites
of the Caribana festival.
By Everton Barnes
There’s an invitation for
groups of Antiguans or Barbudans
to get together and
invest in providing additional
accommodations on the
sister isle.
The latest calls are coming
from the Barbuda representative
Arthur Nibbs as
well as the chairman of the
Caribana Committee, Yannick
Beazer.
They say the accommodation
issues continues
to be one of the challenges
facing the expansion of the
Whit-weekend festival on
the sister isle.
“This year, we had people
coming for a single day
and returning to Antigua because
there was no place to
stay,” Nibbs complained.
He said he plans to put
out a call for anyone, Antiguan
or Barbudan, to invest
in providing accommodations
not just for Caribana
but year-round.
“With the going into service
of Barbuda Airways and
the cost of travel being subsidized
there will definitely
be a need for more accommodations
on Barbuda.
“This would be a longterm
undertaking that would
benefit the investor and Barbuda
in the long run,” Nibbs
stated.
Beazer said he also plans
to have discussion with several
Barbudans and to encourage
them to pool their
resources in an effort to address
the accommodation is-
Beazer is already projecting
ahead for next year’s
festival noting that he wants
to see the shows continue
sue on the island.
He added that he was
pleased with the development
regarding transportation
between the two islands;
the increased movements by
the Barbuda Ferry and the
addition of the Caribbean
Helicopters/Barbuda Airways
initiative as providing
greater incentives for travel
between the two islands.
“I project that Caribana
will continue to expand and
to improve for he wants to
ensure that more and more
Antiguans visit the sister isle
for Caribana each year.
in 4 to 5 years, it will become
the event on everyone’s Calendar
for the Whit holidays.
“But this would mean
that the accommodation factor
must keep step to make
that growth possible,” he remarked.
Hundreds of Antiguans
journey to Barbuda for Caribana
each year, but finding a
place to stay continues to be
a challenge with which they
are forced to contend.

The 8 th Tourism Human
Resources Conference,
which was held at the Jolly
Beach Resort and Spa ended
successfully last Friday.
The forum took place
under the theme “Making
Excellence a Habit: Service,
Loyalty and Profitability in
Caribbean Tourism and was
organized by the Caribbean
Tourism Organization
(CTO) in collaboration with
the Ministry of Tourism,
Economic Development,
Investment and Energy.
Speaking to the media
on the final day of the
conference, the Director of
Resource Mobilization and
Development at the CTO,
Bonita Morgan, said she
was very pleased with the
level of participation and
turnout from persons representing
both the private and
public sectors, regionally
and internationally.
“The participants have
responded positively to the
conference offerings. Our
theme was making excellence
a habit and everything
was focused on the
business of excellence. So
we had a great turnout in
oversees participants and
the response from local participants
was very good as
well”, Morgan stated.
She added that the high
cadre of facilitators and
presenters also positively
influenced the outcome of
the event.
Among the highlights
of the discussions, were the
various elements of excellence
and leadership in the
sector addressed.
“The leaders have to put
things in place and have the
right environment for which
people can be productive
and give their best.
“Those various elements
are linked to the overall
theme of excellence and
quality.
“We also looked at
mechanisms to measure
performance and excellence
in the organizations and this
is something that has been
missing in the region.
“It is something that we
will definitely seek to improve
on”, Morgan further
noted.
The Ministry of Tourism
and the Antigua and Barbuda
Tourism Authority received
high praise for their
involvement in making the
event successful.
Speaking from the local
perspective, Tourism Consultant
within the Ministry
of Tourism, Shirlene Nibbs,
expressed the view that the
information that the participants
received, will increase
excellence in the sector.
“With this wide cross
section of persons who
took part in the conference
and gained such a wealth
of knowledge and understanding
on the importance
of excellence and quality, I
am personally feeling that
I am no longer the only
voice in the wilderness but
I am now joined by a cadre
of persons who are able to
take this message forward,
that if Antigua and Barbuda
is to have a great tourism
product, we have to offer
a service that is excellent”,
Nibbs said emphatically.
Bennett faces trial for grievous bodily harm
Alecia Mc Pherson
Paul Allan Bennett of
St. James Club is currently
before the court facing a
charge of grievous bodily
harm caused to fiancé Sharon
Hunte. Trial for this case
commenced last week with
Chief Magistrate Jo-Ann
Walsh presiding over the
matter.
Bennett took to the stand
and gave sworn statement
and admitted to all allegations
stating “it was all good
humor, I was happy and
wasn’t upset at all”, however
he denied physically beating
Hunte saying “she’s the most
beautiful woman in Antigua,
I love her and would not
harm her intentionally” he
also stated “she’s Jealous
and driven by greed”.
Shemroy Griffith aged 22
of Potters Village, who has
become a prosecution witness
in the matter, reported
Alecia Mc Pherson
A 23 year-old Bethesda man has been
arrested and charged with serious indecency
and unlawful sexual intercourse with a
13 year-old girl.
Reports are that the accused and the
complainant had been in constant contact
via Whatsapp and other social media for
about one month prior to the alleged occurrence
and on Monday April 11, 2016
the defendant reportedly invited the complainant
to his home as she was on her way
home from school at about 1:50 pm.
The defendant performed the unlawful
to police that he witnessed
the defendant beating Hunt.
In court, Griffith gave
sworn evidence that on
the day in question he was
moved to help Hunte as he
saw her being pushed from
the moving vehicle onto
the street. About 12 p.m. on
Saturday April 25 while riding
his motor cycle, Griffith
said he was in the Heritage
Quay area in close proximity
to Fred’s Ice Cream Parlor
when he was blocked by
a maroon coloured Toyota
jeep parked in the middle of
the street.
He blew his horn to indicate
to the driver that he
wanted to pass. The driver
then reversed and hit the
bike and immediately drove
off after doing so. Griffith
explained that he followed
the jeep to confront the driver
and caught up with him
in the vicinity of Jam Dung
Man charged for alleged
sexual act with minor
act after which he told the complaint to take
a shower. He later followed her to the bus
stop where he left her to get a bus home.
The matter was later reported to the police
and the defendant was subsequently arrested
and charged for the offence.
Reports are that the defendant denied
the allegations and reportedly told police
that the complainant came and met him on
the day in question but that they did not
engage in any sexual act. The accused was
given the said charges and remanded to
HMP until tomorrow when he will appear
at the St. John’s Magistrates Court.
Night Club on Nevis Street.
That’s when he witnessed
Bennett grabbed the
lady in the passenger seat
(Hunte) by her head, pulled
her down to his lap and fist
punched her to the back of
her head repeatedly. Griffith
explained that a crowd started
to gather around the vehicle
at that time but Bennett
drove off as Hunte shouted
“Help me please” several
times.
Griffith said he followed
the vehicle up Nevis Street
until he came in front of the
Medical Benefit Building.
The door open while the vehicle
was still in motion and
the defendant pushed Hunte
onto the road. He then flung
a pair of high heel shoes out
after her.
Griffith said he went over
to assist the lady and saw
that her face was bruised
and bleeding; she also sustained
a cut to the left foot.
She was crying loudly and
complained of severe pains
to the head. The police was
called immediately and the
Hunte along with Griffith
was taken to St. John’s Police
station where a report
was made about the incident.
Upon cross examination
the prosecution put to Bennett
that he did in fact committed
the unlawful acts with
the indentation to provoke
Hunte, and that his statement
“You would read about
me in the newspaper tomorrow”
proves that it was also
his intent to physically harm
the woman.
Bennett again denied
saying that he was attacked
by Hunte repeatedly and his
actions were that of self defence.
Furthermore he stated
that he never pushed Hunte
from the vehicle but said that
she kicked the door open and
slid out herself.
Regarding the allegations
of him beating Hunte to the
head, he stated that both
himself and Hunte are licence
firearm holders. “She
reached for her handbag and
I assumed she may be getting
her gun, so I held her
head down so that she would
not be able to see what she
was doing” he stated.
The trial continues on
May 17 when the Prosecution
and council Dorsett will
present their closing arguments
after which the presiding
Magistrate will make
her decision in this matter.

Villa man charged with larceny
Alecia Mc Pherson
Natakie Shevrington of Villa was arrested
and charged with larceny, resisting
arrest, battery on police and having
a camouflage uniform jacket in his possession.
On Tuesday May 10 last week George
White age 66 of Villa made a report to
police alleging that Shevrington stole
$320.00EC from him. The complainant
claims he had the money along with his
Senior Citizens Booklet in a black plastic
bag which he placed in his pants waist.
While on St. John’s Street the accused
reportedly approached him from behind
and took possession of the plastic bag.
Allegations are that the accused removed
Alecia Mc Pherson
Stephan Farrell having
been charged with battery
and threatening language
appeared before Magistrate
Clarke at the St. John’s Magistrates
Court to face the said
charges.
Shenika Hunte of Cashew
Alecia Mc Pherson
Everette Spencer was arrested and
charged with larceny for allegedly stealing
75 gallons of Diesel, the property of the
Bank of Nova Scotia which is reportedly
valued at EC$1,125.
40-year-old Spencer of Browne’s Avenue
is unemployed and is known to the court
for previous offences. On Wednesday of
last week, at about 2 am officers responded
to a report that a suspicious male was seen
climbing the parking lot fence of the Antigua
Commercial Bank on St. Mary’s Street in the
vicinity of the old Map Shop building.
the money then handed the bag with its
other content back to the complainant.
The accused then, reportedly warned the
complainant not to go to the police, that if
he does so ‘he will deal with him’.
On May 11, officers from the Rapid
Response Unit armed with a search warrant
went in search of the accused. Upon
arrival at the Villa home the accused took
off running in an attempt to evade the
lawmen who gave chase. The officers
were only able to apprehend the man after
he tripped and fell; apparently a struggle
ensued in an attempt to bring the man
under arrest. Reports are that the accused
resorted to fighting the lawmen.
Some minutes later they were finally
Hill made a report to police
after she was beaten then further
received threats to her
life by the defendant.
The court heard that the
defendant and Hunte were
involved in a relationship and
shares a child together.
On February 7, 2016 at
about 10:00pm Hunte and her
new boyfriend were walking
in the Cashew Hill area when
she was attacked by the defendant.
Reports are that the complainant
fell to the ground
during the attack and was
dealt several fist blows to the
Man arrested for allegedly
stealing diesel from bank
Immediate search was carried out in the
mentioned area and the defendant was reportedly
found at the back of the Bank of
Nova Scotia’s building with two five gallon
bottles of Diesel in his possession.
Spencer reportedly told police that ‘a
man paid him $80 to get the fuel’ but refused
responded saying that he only took
five-dollars $5EC from the complainant’s
plastic bag.
charges. Shevrington was remanded to
The woman was given a
Picture perfect
By Justin Peters
Antigua and Barbuda is home to
many talented performers. On any given
day you can see dancers, singers and
other performers exhibiting their talents
around the island.
One such artist, a Parham resident,
The Ministry of Education,
Science and Technology
is deeply saddened by the
passing of Dr Caron Weston.
This stalwart teacher of
Mathematics, Department
Head, Deputy Principal and
Education Officer became
nationally known through
the local television programme
Mastering Mathematics.
For a lifetime, Dr Weston
employed her gifts and abilities,
liberally, in the service
of country, leaving indelible
footprints on the education
landscape of Antigua and
Barbuda. She possessed an
unbridled and extraordinary
quantity of energy which
was emblazoned on her work
at every stage of her career.
Carl Jung reminds: “One
looks back with appreciation
Gormingston E. Payne is a self-taught
portrait artist who started drawing at
the age of 6. When asked why he started
drawing, he expressed how much he
always loved to draw for as long as he
could remember.
Watching the artist affectionately
to the brilliant teachers, but
with gratitude to those who
touched our human feelings.
The curriculum is so much
necessary raw material, but
warmth is the vital element
for the growing plant and for
the soul of the child.”
Dr Weston, as a Mathematics
teacher, imparted
with fervour. However, one
of her most important attributes
was the love and understanding
she demonstrated
in attending to the nurture
of her students. She was always
willing to listen and to
help. She never veered from
the course of candour merely
to be politically correct
and she owned a wonderful
sense of humour. She
always demonstrated profound
loyalty to the vision
and mission of the schools to
known as Gormie in action is like poetry
in motion with more and more of
his subject being transferred onto the
canvas with every stroke of his pencil.
From his regular spot at Heritage
Quay, droves of tourists and locals
alike can be seen crowding around as
he creates caricatures that capture the
essence of his subjects emotions. He
definitely adds something special to the
shopping experience.
Statement on the passing of Dr. Caron Weston
which she was assigned and
subsequently to the Ministry
of Education where she last
worked.
By any measure, the influence
Dr. Weston’s contribution
to the education landscape
of this nation has been
significant. The Ministry
of Education, Science and
Technology salutes this fallen
educator for service and
prays that perpetual light
may shine on her.
Solicitor for the Applicant
In its continuing effort to
give customers more ways
to access its services and
transform its customer experience,
Flow has introduced
an upgraded state-of-the-art
Interactive Voice Response
(IVR) system which facilitates
self-serve options 24
hours per day, 7 days per
week.
This move comes as
Flow completes its comprehensive
rebranding across
the Caribbean and relocates
its new Customer Contact
Centre of Excellence to Jamaica.
Since February 2016,
Flow has embarked on a
phased reintroduction of the
Customer Contact Centre of
Excellence, the aim of which
is to improve service levels
in Jamaica and across the
wider Caribbean.
With the newly introduced
IVR system, customers
of the former Columbus
(legacy Flow) will begin to
experience a much more interactive
service that allows
them to: automatically access
account information
such as bill balances, last
payment made, current payment
due date, as well as
pay cable TV and broadband
bills. The IVR facilitates instant
credit card payments,
which are posted to their
accounts immediately. This
service was already available
to customers of the former
LIME brand.
The implementation of
the IVR results in quicker
response times and speedier
resolution of issues.
Since May 2, all mobile
customer calls within Jamaica
are being handled by
Jamaican agents 24/7 and
Jamaica’s fixed line and
broadband customer calls
are now being routed to the
new centre, Monday to Sunday
from 7am to 7pm. Additionally,
the IVR service
as well as all cable calls will
also be fully managed from
Jamaica starting June 2016.
Alvin Stokes, SVP Customer
Experience, expressed
delight at the progress being
made as the company takes
deliberate steps on its journey
towards becoming the
number one service provider
across the region. “The
addition of the upgraded
transactional capabilities
of the state-of-the-art IVR
system underscores our mission
to totally transform our
customer experience. Early
indications are that we
have been making inroads,”
Stokes said, while confirming
that “since the relocation
of the Contact Centre of Excellence
back to Jamaica we
have seen an improvement
in customer satisfaction ratings
of +18%.”

Sandals hosts annual Prestige Awards
Joanna Paris
The Lord Nelson Ballroom
at the Sandals Grande
Antigua Resort and Spa last
Thursday was transformed
into a platform, which depicted
pure elegance and
class for the special awards
ceremony-The Sandals Prestige
Awards.
Each year, the event sees
team members being rewarded
for their outstanding
work in various categories
for the previous year.
Under the theme, “Back
to the Future-Hall of Fame”,
the atmosphere attempted
and successfully so; to
showcase what the Sandals
Grande Antigua Resort and
Spa will be like in the future.
The event began with
suspense in the air, as all of
the nominees, specially invited
guests and members
of the media eagerly waited
outside the closed doors, for
what promised to be an unforgettable
unveiling.
And… that is exactly
what it was…upon entering
the room, there were exclamations
of “ooohhss” and
“aaahhs” at the futuristic appearance
of the room.
The official ceremony
blasted off with a welcoming
“inflight message” from the
resort’s General Manager,
Gaurav “Mr.G” Sindhi who
described the year 2015 as a
very successful one and also
emphasized that this could
not have been possible without
the hard and dedicated
work of the team members.
He sincerely declared
that “Each and every one
of you tonight is a winner
tonight. We honestly cannot
do it without you; you are
the people that truly make
things happen”.
The featured address was
delivered by Human Resources
Professional, Nicole
Antonio-Gadston, who outlined
the important role that
the team members play on a
daily basis under the theme
“The Future is now”.
She encouraged those
present, to keep striving for
excellence, since they will
definitely be recognized and
rewarded.
Then it was time for the
awards… Taking home the
prize as the “Mover and
Shaker” of 2015 was Ossie
Harris, Larencia Bethel
was awarded the prize in
the “Circle of Joy” category,
Kellyn Benjamin received
the Legendary award, while
the “Sandals Earthguard”
award went to Joan Tappins.
Marcia Powell outshined
her colleagues for the “Sandals
Social media can impact
employers’ decision, says Baptist
Joanna Paris
Persons are being encouraged to be
mindful of what they post on social media,
especially if they expect to get that
“dream job”.
This advice comes from the Founder
of the Antigua and Barbuda Small
Business Association (ABSBA), author,
motivational speaker, Sandra Baptist,
who indicated that employers are now
looking at social media profiles as part
of procedures to choose a perspective
candidate to fill a vacancy.
“As an employer myself, we look at
what they are posting, because this gives
you an insight into that person’s belief
and you also get an insight into what
kind of person they are”, she explained.
Baptist noted that although most
persons are of the view that “it is their
page, for example”, they must think of
the bigger picture and the opportunities
that may lie ahead.
“As employers, we are looking for
people that will have a positive impact
on the company and for individuals who
can represent our businesses well. You
have to be careful what you say on social
media, what you respond to, what
you like and that sort of thing”, she further
emphasized.
Baptist also urged persons to utilize
professional email addresses when conducting
official business, since this too,
can be viewed as a reflection of the person’s
character.
cont’d from pg 10
prize, Michelle Martin
Maker” and Jennifer Franklyn
won the “Pace Setter
The “All Rounder of the
Year” went to Gavin Weekes
while Deon Blair carried
home the prize -“Heart of
the House”.
The House Keeping Department
defied all odds
in 2015 and evidently outshined
the other departments
for the “A Team Award” or
the Department of the Year
Award.
Scotty Nelson from Club
Sandals, took home the
year’s top prize-Diamond
“Employee of the Year”.
All of the winners in the
various categories received a
number of prizes to include a
certificate and plaques bearing
their names.

Tuesday 17th May 2016
The cost of development
By Cecil E. W. Wade
The Antigua and Barbuda
Labour Party Government
led by Prime Minister Gaston
Browne is like an island
in an ocean of jealousy, envy
and hate.
The opposition United
Progressive Party, (UPP)
together with its merging
partner, The Movement, has
been fiercely attacking the
Government under the false
notion of patriotism.
During the nightly battles
on the opposition-aligned
radio station, Crusader, they
admonish their supporters
to “fix your amour and adjust
your helmet”. It is an
all-out war to overthrow the
Government and reinstate
themselves in the positions
of power from which they
were far flung just a short
two years ago, by a large
majority of 14 seats to 3.
They are placing all sorts
of obstacles in the way to
prevent the Labour Party
Government from rebuilding
the wreckage they created
during their ten years in
power.
For two years now all
they have been able to do
is antagonise the efforts of
the Government to effect
foreign investments. They
object to everything but can
never offer any alternative
solutions to the economic
problems they created. They
were totally ineffective as a
Government and completely
irrelevant as an opposition.
There is a cost to everything
in life, there are no
free lunches; and as the saying
goes you cannot make an
omelette without breaking
the egg. Which contributes
more to the advancement of
our people, foreign investment
or digging cockle or
catching “shalligo”?
Sacrifices had always to
be made in order to effect
development in Antigua and
Barbuda. Rat Island had to
be substantially razed, and
Wash Hand Basin and other
areas altered to accommodate
the Deep Water Harbour.
Pigotts’s Wharf and Fibrery
had to be removed to
build Redcliffe Quay and
Heritage Quay with the piers
to accommodate the world’s
largest cruise ships, contributing
to the development of
our main industry – Tourism.
The old cemetery in the area
from V. C. Bird’s bust up to
area of Courts had to be removed
in order to build the
market complex. The old
bus station and market had
to be torn down for the erection
of the fisheries building
and new bus station. Perry
Bay had to be sacrificed so
that the Multipurpose Centre,
the highway, Bargain
Centre and other businesses
in the area could be developed.
Development does not
necessarily cause destruction,
but accommodations
will have to be made from
time to time. As a matter
of fact, developments mostly
improve the environment
because the developers tend
to be more conscious of the
environment than we Antiguans,
since they would
endeavour to protect their
investments.
We are the ones who cut
down trees indiscriminately
and do not replant any.
Some fanatic supporters acquire
large tracts of lands,
ostensibly to develop Agriculture,
but there is no value
added: also prize lots of land
for resale to foreigners for
personal gain, and then try
to detract you by declaring
that foreigners are buying
out Antigua.
Littering is liberal, as
well as dumping of construction
debris in the ponds,
thereby depleting the surface
waters. Dead animals, faeces,
old tires and car parts are
dumped in the sea. And it is
not uncommon to see Antiguans
driving around with
speakers the size of small refrigerators
atop their SUV’s
creating noise pollution
and noise-deafness. Some
fellows would leave diesel
trucks idling at the side of
the roads while they go into
cont’d on pg 13

Tuesday 17th May 2016 c a r i b b e a n t i m e s . a g 13
cont’d from pg 12
a road-side joint to gamble
for hours, thereby polluting
the atmosphere. Who, therefore,
is destroying the environment?
It seems that there
is discrimination, if you’re
born Antiguan, you can destroy
the environment as
much you like!”
We need to embrace foreign
investment and ensure
that it is done for our benefit
in accordance with the laws,
not take investors to court
as Baldwin Spencer and his
gang are notorious for doing.
Opposition parties habitually
objected to development
if it was not being done
under their administration.
But in by-gone days their
approach was different when
the interest of the Country
was paramount. Today, it
is all to our detriment as the
combined opposition shout
and scream, with the “lickdung-chop-up-drag-out-andcarry-a-court”
attitude! And
because they have the use
of the media they are rude,
disrespectful and obnoxious
with the use of horrible English.
Do not be fooled by the
leader of The Movement declaring
that he is not a member
of any party – he is seeking
relevance and political
power. Remember the late
Premier George Walter used
to say that he would only be
in a Trade Union free from
Governmental interference!
But as soon as he tasted power
he headed up the powerful
PLM political party!
The opposition-aligned
radio stations have been
wailing and bawling about
the destruction of the mangrove
in the area of the proposed
Yida Development.
Therefore I was compelled
to comb the entire area from
Mercer’s Creek to Parham
Harbour by boat and then by
land to see this massive destruction.
I was amazed to
see only a negligible amount
of clearance, I presume to
permit passage which is necessary
in any development
project.
The Opposition has been
strident in its aversion of
any type of development for
Antigua and Barbuda. They
resisted:
The Carlisle Bay Hotel
The Morris Bay Project
The Dato Tan Project
The Stanford Development
Project
Also, the University of
Antigua and Barbuda Campus
and the Paradise Found
Project, in Barbuda. This
latter project should be permitted
if only as an apology
for the horrible quadruple
murders on board the yacht
Challenger in Barbuda in
January 1994. Reading the
book, “Bound to A Promise”
by Bonnie Floyd, daughter
of William Norman Clever
who was murdered, tears
came to my eyes! We should
now demonstrate that we are
not hostile to white people
who choose to be among us.
The UPP Government
created economic chaos in
the Country and is bent on
keeping it that way. The
Labour Party Government
must realise that they have
declared war against them
and are resolute on taking
them out of power in spite
of their being installed by
the majority of the population.
They must be equally
resolved to keep them out of
power, in opposition, which
is their rightful place of existence.
People have fought over you
If walking takes an average
As much as you’d like to walk
Great conversations will be a
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23).
Most things you can fall
Ambrose ‘very disappointed’
at losing WI consultancy job
Curtly Ambrose, the former
West Indies fast bowler,
has said the decision to
remove him as West Indies’
bowling consultant came as
“a bit of a shock”. Ambrose
was replaced with Roddy
Estwick on the weekend; he
said head coach Phil Simmons
told him the decision
was made because Simmons
wanted someone who is
“more technical” to coach
the team’s fast bowlers.
“I only learnt about it
from head coach Phil Simmons
on Wednesday [last
week], and when he told me
I said to him that I am very
disappointed, because I never
expected it, and I never
saw it coming because he
never gave me any indication
he was going to let me
cont’d from pg 20
Kohli and de Villiers put their seat belts
on. Kohli picked the wrong’uns, de Villiers
used the crease against the three
spinners, and sixes were struck on demand.
Soon the equation read 40 from
24. End even though Gambhir changed
his bowlers, the result remained unaffected.
Kohli sauntered to his eighth fifty-plus
score of the tournament and de
Villiers, more attacking of the two, registered
his 28-ball half-century as the
duo whittled down the target with eight
balls to spare.
Their unbeaten stand read 115 runs
from 11.1 overs at a scoring rate of
10.29. Along the way, Kohli surpassed
the Chris Gayle and Michael Hussey’s
tally of 733 runs to become the highest
go,” Ambrose was quoted as
saying in the Antigua Observer.
“So, it came as a bit of a
shock basically, but I haven’t
decided which direction
I am going to take just yet.
I’ll just pause and give it a
little time to think about it
and decide where I want to
go after.”
Ambrose had served as
West Indies’ consultant for
the last three years, his most
Sir Curtly Ambrose looks on
recent assignment being the
World T20 triumph in India
in April. The WICB press
release did not state a reason
for Ambrose’s exit. “I spoke
to head coach Phil Simmons,
and he told me that
he wanted someone who is
more technical to work with
the fast bowlers,” Ambrose
said. “So, I said to him well,
if you knew I was doing a
poor job, then you should
have told me. He said no, I
run-scorer in an IPL season.
Knight Riders’ journey to 183 had
been a bumpy ride, led first by the top
order and then the lower order. Iqbal
Abdulla, who replaced Varun Aaron,
took a one-handed catch to dismiss
Robin Uthappa in the third over. Gambhir
and Pandey didn’t look perturbed
though.
While the captain relied more on
nudges, Pandey’s big swings towards
the midwicket region kept the fielders
busy, as Knight Riders crossed fifty at
the end of the Powerplay.
Just when they were hitting the pedal
harder, Royal Challengers pulled
things back with three wickets in 10
balls. Gambhir and Pandey fell just
after crossing their fifties to allow Abdulla
and Chahal to slow things down
did a fantastic job, because I
brought a high level of discipline
to the team, and I have
motivated the guys quite a
bit... but he wants somebody
more technical, hence, he
is going for Roderick Estwick.”
Estwick, who was given
the designation of bowling
coach, is due to join the West
Indies pre-season preparatory
camp on May 19, ahead
of the home tri-series against
Australia and South Africa
that starts on June 3 in Guyana.
Estwick had coached
the Barbados domestic side
as well as the West Indies
Under-19 and Barbados
Under-19 teams, apart from
participating in the High
Performance Centre programme.
(ESPNcricinfo)
further.
Yusuf Pathan, who made an unbeaten
29-ball 60 in a match-winning effort
when the sides last met in Bangalore,
was deceived in flight and was stumped
for 6, while Suryakumar Yadav holed
out to long-off. Knight Riders stumbled
to 125 for 5.
The momentum switched sides
again when Russell and Shakib got
together. Shakib used more of legside
swipes and Russell unfurled his
commanding swings from deep in the
crease to collect boundaries at will.
Even though Shakib raced to 12 off
his first four deliveries, he later took
singles to give the strike to Russell,
who targeted the quicks more to clear
the ropes and scored a quickfire 39 off
Tuesday 17th May 2016
Gayle busts slump
as RCB breeze to win
KOLKATA - Thirty-two runs, 43
balls, and less than an hour spent at the
crease while batting in a total of eight
innings. Those are Chris Gayle’s numbers
during his lean run since his hundred
in West Indies’ World T20 opener
against England exactly two months
ago. On a humid night at the Eden Gardens,
he struck form against his former
franchise to help Royal Challengers
Bangalore stay alive in their hunt for
the playoffs, with a nine-wicket win
against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Royal Challengers’ top order made
light work of the 184 target as Virat
Kohli and AB de Villiers carried their
stellar show from Bangalore to Kolkata,
after Gayle’s 31-ball 49.
Gayle trudged to 1 off seven balls
before unleashing the big hits. He started
with a swipe over mid-on for four in
the second over, and treated the short
balls thereafter with disdain. The upper
cut, slaps the inside-out drive and
Chris Gayle pulls a shot
against KKR.
even the fierce sweeps off Sunil Narine,
something he’s not always known
for, followed as he raced to 35 off 21.
Amidst the carnage, Kohli exhibited
one classical inside-out drive for six
that showed that the Royal Challengers
party was on at both ends, and only 11
people at the packed ground were not
dancing to it.
Gayle was trapped lbw by Narine
after he struck two more sixes, but that
brought together Kohli and de Villiers.
They were watchful at times but picked
boundaries regularly. While de Villiers
