2010 is a historic year for <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Ramah</strong> in California, as we complete our purchase of the camp property from American<br />
Jewish University. This year’s dinner is also a celebration of a camp that has reached maturity and is ready to guide its own future<br />
with clarity of vision and complete fiscal responsibility. Thus, it is entirely fitting that the honorees have chosen to direct the<br />
proceeds towards retiring the existing mortgage on the camp’s facilities and capital improvements. By eliminating the remaining<br />
debt, dollars that would otherwise have to be paid to the bank for principal and interest can instead provide more scholarship<br />
assistance to campers and help augment and enhance our programs and facilities.<br />

<strong>Tara</strong> & <strong>Jay</strong> <strong>Reisbaum</strong><br />
<strong>Tara</strong> and <strong>Jay</strong> met at <strong>Ramah</strong> CA when both were dining room waiters<br />
(Chavurah) in the summer of ’79. Throughout college, <strong>Jay</strong> and <strong>Tara</strong><br />
continued to spend their summers working at <strong>Ramah</strong> as counselors.<br />
<strong>Tara</strong>’s expertise and training led her to work in <strong>Ramah</strong>’s Tikvah Program<br />
working with adolescents with disabilities while <strong>Jay</strong> became a Rosh Edah<br />
and played piano for Rosh Musica Andrew Spitzer.<br />
<strong>Tara</strong> and <strong>Jay</strong> married in 1988. <strong>Jay</strong> pursued his master’s in Real Estate Development and then transitioned<br />
to supervise the real estate and theater operations for Laemmle Theatres. <strong>Tara</strong> pursued a master’s<br />
in Educational Psychology while directing <strong>Ramah</strong>’s beloved Tikvah program for nine years. As Tikvah<br />
Director, <strong>Tara</strong> designed, created and raised the initial funds to begin the Ezra Vocational Program and<br />
received a “New Innovative” grant for a weekend for families with disabilities, which became a model<br />
design for the <strong>Ramah</strong> Community.<br />
Both have continued their community involvement through Sinai Temple, Milken Community High<br />
School, Los Angeles Jewish Federation and the Wexner Heritage Program. <strong>Jay</strong> has served on the <strong>Ramah</strong><br />
board for eighteen years, including a term as Board Chair. Currently, <strong>Jay</strong> chairs the NorCal <strong>Ramah</strong> effort<br />
and serves on the National <strong>Ramah</strong> Commission.<br />

In 1979, Sandi was participating in the Mador program in <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Ramah</strong><br />
in California while unbeknownst to her, Avi was a counselor and sailing<br />
instructor at <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Ramah</strong> in Canada that same year. It was not until Avi<br />
and Sandi met on the One-Year Program at Hebrew University that they<br />
realized their mutual love for each other and their love for everything that<br />
is <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Ramah</strong>!<br />
Avi moved to Los Angeles in 1983 and they were married shortly after. In his professional life, Avi is the<br />
founder and CEO of Practice Management Group, a healthcare consulting company as well as CEO of<br />
Nevada Orthopedic and Spine Center. Both became deeply involved at Sinai Akiba, Sinai Family Minyan,<br />
and Milken Community High School, as well as the larger Los Angeles Jewish community. In addition,<br />
Avi is a fellow of the Wexner Heritage Program. While Sandi has served as both a teacher in the Tikvah<br />
program and a Yoetzet at camp, Avi’s transformation from <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Ramah</strong> in Canada (with a lake), to<br />
<strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Ramah</strong> in California (with 2 pools) is now complete, since for the past 11 years, he has served<br />
on the Board and Executive Committee as Treasurer, Facilities Chair, and most recently Chair of the<br />
Executive Director Search Committee.<br />
marci & andrew spitzer<br />
Jewish summer camp is an integral part of the Spitzer/Barnhard DNA! In<br />
total, the Spitzers and their children have collectively spent 102 summers<br />
at <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Ramah</strong> in California.<br />
Marci grew up at <strong>Camp</strong> Alonim and Brandeis <strong>Camp</strong> Institute. Andrew<br />
grew up at <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Ramah</strong>, and continued as Mador, <strong>Jay</strong> <strong>Reisbaum</strong>’s junior<br />
counselor, counselor, and Music Director. The joint commitment to <strong>Camp</strong><br />
<strong>Ramah</strong> was mutually defined in the prenuptial agreement. Upon returning<br />
to Los Angeles in 1994 after completing Orthopaedic Surgery residency and fellowship training in<br />
Philadelphia and Boston, it took less than a year for the Spitzer Family to find their new summer home<br />
on Fairview Road in Ojai. With Andrew as the <strong>Camp</strong> Doctor, Marci knew that she had to find a role for<br />
herself at camp as well. Thus began the incredibly popular Chug Bishul, which has resulted in the best-<br />
selling <strong>Ramah</strong> cookbook, Simchas and Spice. In 2005, Marci created the Moreshet (Legacy) program, in<br />
partnership with Friends of the IDF.<br />
Andrew joined the <strong>Ramah</strong> Board, soon became a member of the Executive Committee and has served<br />
as Medical Director since 1997, shepherding the ”Marp” through many memorable summers of camp<br />
crud, NoroVirus, and of course Swine ’09. The yearning for camp in the fall each year has encouraged<br />
other Jewish communal involvement for both Marci and Andrew, including Shalhevet High School,<br />
Friends of the IDF, B’nai David Judea Congregation, Maimonides Academy, Sinai Akiba Academy and<br />
the Wexner Heritage Program.
