The biker with a hangover...
A bad ass biker wakes up at home with a huge
hangover.
He forces himself to open his eyes, and the first
thing he sees is a couple of aspirins and a glass of
water on the side table.
He sits down and sees his clothing in front of him,
all clean and pressed.
He looks around the room and sees that it is in
perfect order, spotless, clean. So is the rest of the
house.
He takes the aspirins and notices a note on the
table.
“Honey, breakfast is on the table, I left early to go
grocery shopping.
Love You!”
Totally shocked with the note , he goes to the
kitchen and sure enough there is a hot breakfast
and the morning newspaper.
His son is also at the table, eating. He asks, “Son,
what happened last night?”
His son says, “Well, you came home around 3 AM,
drunk and delirious.
Broke some crockery and gave yourself a black eye
when you stumbled into the door”. Confused, the
man asks, “So, why is everything in order and so
clean, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?
I should expect a big quarrel with her!”
His son replies, “Oh, that! Mom dragged you to the
bedroom, and when she tried to take your clothes
n shoes off to put you to bed, you said,
“LADY LEAVE ME ALONE! I’M MARRIED!”
NEWS
brought to you by
59 racing news (five nine
racing, NOT fifty nine):
Viv Hearne’s 59 racing store has moved
to shiny new premises in Soloman
Mahlangu road in Equestria which is
near Pretoria. They carry a huge variety
of products from the Big Boy range, to
Polaris and Linhai – and if you are a lady
with a shoe fetish (yup) ask Viv to show
you her new shoe boutique.
A busy shop and workshop needs a topnotch
foreman – and Cornel de Villiers
– he of CDV fame is in the back servicing
and repairing bikes and ATV’s…
Goscors range of pressure washers
The guys from Goscor called us the other day and asked
whether we would like to try out one of their pressure
washers. We went along, collected one and did exactly that…
This is the more portable 3200 PSI baby of the bunch. OK
not really a baby because they do have smaller electric units
– but we wanted something that you can use where there is
no power. They have them available in both petrol and diesel
configurations.
There are a few features on this one that we really like.
The first is the selection of 5 different spray heads that are
available – and they slot on via tough brass adaptors. So
you get one that makes circles, one that jets the stuff off, a
squirty one – and there is a separate nozzle for applying your
washing Muti and even a water pistol type job that the kids
love!... very cool.
Another feature that we have not come across before is the
sucking mechanism that allows you to suck up the water
supply from a trough or dam in the event that no hose is
available. And it comes complete with a filter so you don’t get
rubbish into your machine. And we have to mention that the
force of water generated by this thing is mighty impressive –
and this is the baby of the portable bunch.
These guys have a massive selection of washers, including
one with a built in water tank – perfect for race events
and such and they tell us that their solutions are very cost
effective with full parts backup. Look out for them at events
around the country.
a feature. Hopefully, when the bike
arrives here, Ducati will bear us in
mind and we’ll get a spin. Until then,
here is the skinny on the latest big
mamma adventurer...
Paul Young shares his thoughts...
“Any doubts about the new
Multistrada Enduro being a genuine
dirt sled are well and truly left in the
dust once you sling a leg over and
point it towards the rough stuff.”
Ducati haven’t re-entered the
adventure scene to just make up the
numbers – they’re deadly serious about
taking the fight to the well-established
big guns of off-road touring.
Expect to see sparks fly in the battle
for our adventure-bike bucks.
Believe The Hype?
Ducati says: On the Multistrada 1200
Enduro, there’s been no compromise
on Ducati style and technology.
Tested and developed under the
most extreme conditions, the
Multistrada 1200 Enduro features the
excellent, hard-wearing Multistrada
1200 frame together with a new
double-sided swingarm. Ducati
breaks with the past and enters the
adventure motorcycle segment with a
motorcycle that combines traditional
Ducati values in terms of advanced
technology and high-performance,
with long-range touring capabilities
and true off-road ability.
Paul says: Certainly can’t argue with
the opening lines of the marketing
spiel. This is a modern Ducati with
all the attention to detail, advanced
technology, and sassy Italian style
of a Panigale superbike. The only
difference is this new Duke is made for
doing it in the dirt.
The Enduro was developed in
parallel with the current regular
Multistrada, so the frame and
engine didn’t require any structural
modifications for the Enduro model.
However, over 260 other individual
parts, unique to the Multistrada
Enduro, were developed to ensure
the model’s off-road capabilities and
durability. This is no badge engineering
job where Ducati have just slapped
the word Enduro on the end of the
standard Multistrada name. It’s the real
off-road deal.
They say: The Multistrada Enduro has
the ability to travel across continents,
allowing riders the freedom to explore the
globe on two wheels. The outstanding allterrain
ability of the Multistrada Enduro
is matched by its supreme long-range
touring capability.
Paul says: I’ve got no doubt that this
bike has the goods to cross continents
like Australia via the ‘b roads’, the ‘back
roads’, and occasionally even the ‘no
roads’. It’s been designed with dirt road
capability as the priority, and durability
tested by some very heavily credentialed
off-road racers.
Covering long distances shouldn’t be
a bother for this bike either. My average
fuel consumption throughout the 300km
of testing, half on road and half off it,
would equate to around 430km from a
30-litre tank of fuel. Easily enough to
traverse all but the most isolated routes
in Oz without carrying extra fuel cans.
They say: The Multistrada Enduro
combines all the latest technological
features available. In terms of Safety, the
Bosch IMU platform governs cornering
ABS, combined braking, cornering
lights, wheelie control and vehicle hold
control. All of these features, as well as
traction control, can be configured to
match rider preference.
The 5” TFT display changes based
on the selected rider mode and has a
comprehensive menu system that allows
riders to modify the entire motorcycle’s
behavior. Cruise control and backlit
switchgear improve comfort and
safety on long rides even during night
rides, where the LED headlight brightly
illuminates the road ahead.
Electronic semi-active suspension
adjusts to any terrain and riding style,
while the powerful Testastretta engine
equipped with continuously variable
timing has impressive power, optimised
for maximum torque and power delivery
throughout the rev range.
Paul says: We 21st century riders
are all totally spoilt with the level of
technology available to make our lives
easier, safer, and more comfortable. The
Multistrada Enduro doesn’t hold back
on delivering a level of luxury and rider
assistance which will make you feel
pampered and give you the confidence to
push your riding beyond the usual limits
with relative safety and control.
Cornering ABS and Ducati’s superb
traction control system provide a safety
net if you do overstep your skill threshold.
And the variety and range of adjustability
in all areas –including electronic
suspension settings, ABS and traction
control intervention levels, and engine
characteristics – make this like owning
50 bikes all rolled into one. Add to this
an intuitive settings menu and excellent
switchgear with big clear backlit buttons,
and luxuries like heated grips and one of
the best cruise control set-ups around,
and you can see Ducati is out to impress.
They say: With the Enduro Riding Mode
the off-road character of the Multistrada
1200 Enduro comes to the fore: engine
power is set to 100 hp and DSS
Evolution intervention is reconfigured
for rough terrain riding. DTC system
settings ensure maximum off-road grip
and acceleration, while the DWC is
disengaged. The ABS, instead, is set to
Level 1, the most suitable for low-grip
surfaces: at this intervention level rear
wheel lift detection is deactivated, as are
the cornering and ABS functions on the
rear wheel so that it can be locked.
Paul says: Enduro riding mode is
calibrated well to ease you onto the dirt
and get to know the bike’s balance and
character. In situations of riding terrain
with good grip, more experienced offroad
riders will soon want to do what
I did and customise the Enduro mode
settings to give full power and no TC
intervention. With the engine speed
kept between 2000-4000rpm the Ducati
proved incredibly tractable. To steer with
the rear, simply buzz the engine up to
5000rpm and enjoy highly predictable
and stable rear-end drifts. Locking up the
rear wheel on Enduro mode is also highly
predictable and controlled, with the light
and evenly modulated clutch making it
a joy to balance between throttle, rear
brake and clutch as you link up the
corners from drift to drift.
They say: The new Multistrada 1200
Enduro is equipped as standard with the
Ducati Multimedia System (DMS) that
thanks to Bluetooth technology allows to
accept an incoming phone call, to select
and listen to the favorite songs and be
alerted for a new SMS.
When you get on the bike the smartphone
automatically connects via
Bluetooth with the bike; connection
allows to manage the controls of the
main multimedia functions while the TFT
display the listening track, the new SMS
icon or the name of the incoming caller;
audio call and music are transmitted to
earphones of driver and passenger.
Moreover, the DMS via the Multistrada
Link smartphones application (available
for Android and IOS), provides a number
of functionality designed to enrich and
share the riding experience.
Paul says: That all sounds very
impressive, but I think I’d rather listen
to the Testastretta V-Twin making sweet
music between the trees, than have tunes
blue-toothed to my earholes.
They say: The Testastretta DVT engine
uses the Desmodromic valve actuation
system that has made the Bologna-built
bikes famous worldwide. This special
system closes the intake and exhaust
valves mechanically, with the same
precision as they are opened.
The design of the Ducati Testastretta
DVT engine shows how Desmodromic
valve actuation provides a clear
advantage over traditional valve springs;
at low revs the system requires less
force because there are no springs to
be compressed. This makes it possible
to keep the individual valve timing
adjusters compact, which minimizes their
weight and allows them to be smoothly
integrated.
As a result, with a bore of 106 mm
and stroke of 67.9 mm (giving a total
displacement of 1198 cm³) the Ducati
Testastretta DVT delivers 160 hp at 9500
rpm and 136 Nm of torque at 7500 rpm.
Even at just 3500 rpm the available torque
is already 100 Nm and remains nearconstant,
exceeding 110 Nm between
5,000 and 10,000 rpm.
The Multistrada 1200 Enduro mounts
a six-speed gearbox on which the first
gear ratio is shorter than that on the other
bikes in the Multistrada family in order
to improve off-road performance and
ensure better handling on more technical,
low-speed tracts. The clutch on the
Multistrada 1200 Enduro is of the oil-bath
slipper type.
Paul says: Yes, it’s a dirty Desmo! The
engine doesn’t actually feel as powerful
as the figures suggest, but this has more
to do with the way it produces its power,
with a big fat flat torque curve, and very
smooth initial throttle response and linear
throttle progression. This is of course the
perfect formula for an off-road engine,
which is why it works so well off-road
even in full power mode.
The low first gear is great for technical
low-speed manoeuvres, and the whole
gearbox has a light and smooth action.
Self-servo slipper clutch ensures low
resistance at the clutch lever and gives
enough back slip to keep the rear in line
after back-shifting gears in a hurry.
They say: The Ducati Testastretta DVT
features an integrated anti-knocking
sensor; while optimized for high octane
fuel (RON 95), thanks to an anti-knocking
24 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE MAY 2016
sensor the motor can also operate - without
manual intervention - on lower octane normal
fuel (RON 91) as are sometimes found in distant
countries.
Paul says: Great idea for when the travel
budget is getting tight, or when the cheap juice
is all that’s on offer.
They say: The Multistrada 1200 Enduro is
equipped as standard with a 870 mm seatheight.
A higher 890 mm version - comfortable
yet suited to off-road riding - and a lower
850 mm one are also available as optionals.
Moreover, there is also the option of a narrower
passenger seat that makes it easier for the rider
to move back when standing on the pegs.
Paul says: With the 870mm high standard seat
fitted I could only just get the tips of my toes on
the ground. On the 850mm low seat I could get
better contact with the ground, but the riding
position felt too low when in motion. The bars
can, however, be lowered by around 20mm by
removing a spacer on the risers, and this would
probably have worked with the low seat. Great
to see an adjustable height rear brake lever for
standing up on the ’pegs off road.
Summary: The primary limiting factors on bigbore
adventure-tourers such as the Multistrada
Enduro are their weight, and their suspension
travel. Like its main rivals, the BMW R1200GS
and the KTM 1290 Super Adventure, the
Ducati manages to cheat these limitations by
maintaining a surprisingly low centre of gravity,
and by incorporating electronic suspension
adjustment to use the limited suspension travel
in the most efficient way possible.
Ducati has entered the adventure market with
a bike which is more than ready to compete with
the two biggest names in the game. It’s rugged,
rapid, and adventure ready. And it’s even
available in red!
When it gets here - we’ll hopefully be able to
do a full local test...
LIFESTYLE
Touring South Africa by bike is absolutely fantastic, and
this country must rate as one of the best places to ride in
the World. We all know this and every weekend scores of
Adventure bikes hit the road in every direction. Often we
ride through big parts of the country without really taking it
in, as we have seen it many times over the years. However,
recently we had the opportunity to host eight visitors on a
ride from Pretoria to Cape Town. We chose to travel through
the Garden route along the way. Suddenly the trip takes
on a whole new dimension when describing the country,
some of its’ attractions and lots of history and telling local
anecdotes to a group of fellow travelers who have never
seen it before. Our ride took four days as we had to be in
Cape Town for the second leg of the SA TT Classic Racing
Series. Some of our group were competing in this annual
classic race bike extravaganza.
For our trip we had a selection of big engined adventure
bikes, with two of the group riding new Yamaha Super
Tenere’ 1200’s rented from Linex in Randburg, another two
of us on the latest Suzuki V –Stoms , a 750 Aprilia Shiver
fitted with some very knobbly full off road tyres, a 1200
BMW GS and finally a Honda Fireblade! One of our UK
visitors and his wife, Steve Church (who toured SA last year
on a BMW 1200 GS) drove the very capable Ford Transit
back up van with a trailer, so we didn’t have to carry any
luggage with us, it all went in the van.
The plan was to follow as many dirt roads as we could,
with an alternate tar route for anyone who needed a break
from the dust and thick sand we often encountered. The
van would follow the tar route. In the end most of us rode
the dirt roads. All of the guys on the bikes were Scotsmen
escaping some seriously cold and wet winter weather.
The first day was quite a short route out of Pretoria,
past Johannesburg on the N3 to Villiers and then off to
Fouriesburg via Bethlehem. It was a good introduction to
riding in rural South Africa, and got the Scots warmed up for
the rest of it. Our plan was to get to the Fouriesberg Inn as
soon as possible, and once settled head out to Sandstone
Estates in Ficksburg for a look at their wonderful collection
of old vehicles and equipment, including the 20 odd km of
steam railroad. A couple of people in the group of racers
taking part in the SA TT travelling by car changed their mind
about which route to take to Cape Town and joined our
adventure bike trip in Fouriesburg….obviously they were
envious of the guys on bikes..maybe next year lads…
Anyway, we arrived too late to see much at Sandstone,
although just chilling on the magnificent estate was a
pleasure.
So back we went to
Fouriesberg for dinner at the
Inn. What a great place. It’s built
from the local sandstone like
many of the old farmhouses in
that area, and exudes charm and
hospitality from a long gone era.
Dinner was quite a formal affair,
with one long warmly lit table,
which was great because we all
got to know each other in the
best atmosphere possible. It was
Steve Church’s birthday, which
he had neglected to tell us during
the day, but somehow it slipped
out. The ever friendly staff lost
no time in drumming up a unique
“Koeksuster” stack, topped by a
forest of birthday candles to mark
the occasion.
The next day was scheduled
to be a long one, with a full
900km route to Plettenberg Bay
on the itinerary. Despite having
discussed it at length when
planning the trip, it was soon
obvious that we wouldn’t make
it in one day, especially as a
small problem with one of the
bikes saw us whizzing around
Fouriesberg in search of a 21mm
nut, (which we eventually found
in nearby Ficksburg) and saw us
hitting the trail hours later than
we planned. Part of the blame
can also be laid on the hotel as
they served up a magnificent
brekkie that we had to enjoy to
the fullest.
Two of the bikers, Keith on
the Fireblade and Bill the bigger
(there were three Bills on the trip,
one large one, one middle and
a smaller one) set off on the tar
route, followed by the Ford, and
the rest of us hit the back roads
around the Lesotho border. The
roads were much better than we
expected and we made good
time. Recent rains had fallen, and
although many of the rivers were
still very low, as were the dams,
the countryside was surprisingly
green. Our route took us past
Ladybrand and down towards
Smithfield. Before we got there
we turned west on a superb
gravel road and headed for
Bethuli, near Gariep Dam. Bethuli
is a lot younger than Ladybrand,
Smithfield and those places, but
still has wide streets and lots of
shady trees, which were very
welcome when we stopped for
lunch in the 40c heat. In general
Bethuli looks like it has been
battered by the years and has
faded from a prosperous farming
centre to a shadow of its’ former
prosperity
From there we hit the tar to
Colesberg, pausing to show a
finger to the two speed traps
on the national road, and on to
Graaf Reinette. The run along the foothills
marking the start of the real Karoo is
fabulous, with the road in great condition
past Noupoort and on to Middleberg. At
Middleberg a collapsed bridge on the main
national road has caused chaos, and all
traffic has been diverted through the town.
What a balls up. Middleberg just can’t
cope and it looks like no-one has taken the
trouble to help the locals sort anything out.
A countless succession of stop streets,
hawkers, jaywalkers, local farmers, other
locals in bust up vehicles that shouldn’t
even exist and taxis just add to the
mahem. Of course there was not one
traffic official of any sort to be seen, until
we hit the main road outside town, where
there was the obligatory speed trap.
The national road to Graaf Reinette is
fabulous, with mountain passes forming
brilliant grandstands to the vast spread of
the Karoo plains far below. An adventure
bike is without any doubt the best way to
experience this magnificent ride. History
just wafts out of every rock, hill top and
plain. Somewhere near the last plummet
down the mountains to the outskirts
of Graaf Reinette lie the remains of the
mysterious Boer hero Gideon Scheepers,
executed by the British at the beginning
of the last century. The Scots with us
were fascinated by the story, especially
as it mirrors some of their own past with
the British.
The 1000cc V-Strom - a very
capable adventure machine
Steve Church in the Ford had arrived
before us by skirting the gravel roads
and stopping less along the way. As our
overnight plans had changed we needed
a place to stay, and he found a fabulous
set up where a full block of old Karoo
houses had been combined and restored
to provide the perfect overnight stop.
It was like stepping back 200 years.
We almost expected the sound of horse
drawn carriages and oxen pulling big
freight wagons to wake us in the morning.
After yet another gourmet breakfast
we hit the road bound for Uniondale, the
last stop on the edge of the Karoo before
taking Prince Alfred’s Pass down to the
coast at Plettenberg Bay. Fortunately
cloud cover cooled things down and
humming along on these big bikes was a
very pleasant experience. Along the way
we popped in to Aberdeen, much to the
amusement of the Scots, who wondered
how a dusty Karoo town got to be
named after a fishing village turned oil
producing center in far away Scotland.
At the next stop Uniondale light rain
began to fall as we took the Avontuur
road out of town. By the time we got to
the start of the Prince Alfred Pass it had
become a steady downpour, turning the
road to a treacherous mixture of slippery
hard surface and soft mud. Undeterred
the intrepid Scots literally headed for
the hills…and dales along the Thomas
A slightly modified
Aprilia Shiver...
Baines built pass. It is astonishing to
think that this pass, built before cars
were invented, is still in daily use by all
sorts of traffic, including some heavy
duty stuff. As we hit the first serious
part of the pass we came across a
brand new horse and trailer which had
somehow found its’ way onto the road,
and now lay in pieces down a mountain
after failing to make the first sharp turn.
Despite a series of warning signs the
moronic driver had carried on.
Always a fabulous ride, our trip down
the pass was the highlight of the trip,
despite the pouring rain. The one thing
that showed up very clearly was that no
amount of clever electronics and trick
suspension can hide the weight of some
of the big bikes. In the extremely slippery
conditions the riders on the bulky GS
and the 1200 Yamaha Tenere’s had their
work cut out to just stay upright, whilst
the lighter V Stom and the 750 Aprilia
Shiver were much easier to ride.
Slipping down into Plett from the top
of the Outeniqua mountains is always a
thrill, and this was no exception.
The final part of our adventure was
the run from Plett to Cape Town. Here
our group split because the racers had
to get to the circuit in time for the first
practice, so they hit the N2 and enjoyed
a high speed blast into Cape Town.
The rest of the group took the gravel
To the Cape
road to Cape Agullas, detouring via
Malgas to take in the pont, one of the
very few left in Southern Africa, on their
way to Cape Town. Every rider, including
those who have seen it before, is always
enthralled by the view of the mother city
as they crest the top of sir Lowries Pass.
Once in Cape Town and checked into
the beachfront Dolphin Beach Hotel
the group finished the last few days of
their South African adventure touring to
places like Franschoek, Stellenbosch
and of course the Chapman’s Peak road.
They all agreed that those last few days
in Cape Town completed their trip in the
best possible way.
Some thoughts on the bikes.
One gets a sense that the days of
the behemoth adventure bikes may
be fading…and the latest offering of
heavyweight manufacturers like Suzuki
and Honda are pointing that way as
well. Even the market leaders in this
sector are seeing their 800 models
gaining sales all the time, possibly at
the expense of the bigger 1200 GS. The
new kids on the block, well not so new
in the case of the Suzuki V Stom, are
slimmer, lighter and nowhere near as
bulky as the big hitters. Our experience
on Prince Afred’s pass in the rain shows
that lighter is more fun, and certainly
safer. Yesterday we spent some time
with one of the most successful KTM
dealers who scoffed at our thoughts.
He brought up a very interesting point.
His argument is that the whole scenario
changes when a rider wants to travel
two up with lots of luggage. Then a big
horsepower bike with the grunt to carry
all of this will far outweigh the merits of
a 94 horsepower Africa Twin…he has got
a point. Travelling with all that luggage
is difficult. It’s significant that the only
rider who got into trouble on our Scots
trip was Billy McCornochan, who kept
two saddlebags filled with an incredible
amount of interesting luggage on his
Aprilia, just in case our back up van broke
down, was the only rider to be caught
out on thick sand at speed and fall down
after a horrific tank slapper. Time will tell
if the advantages of travelling light with
as little luggage as possible and a lighter
bike is preferred to the big bangers. In
the meantime not one of the bikes in our
group, including the fireblade, needed
any maintenance or repair…what a
testimonial to modern Adventure bikes.
JUMBO BOTHA’S TRIUMPH DESPATCH BIKE.
ONCE A TRIUMPH 900 SCRAMBLER…
“I say Percy old chap, Rommel seems
to have us surrounded, so could you
please hop on your bike and pop over
to Monty with these dispatches…ask
him to be a sport and send over some
reinforcements chop-chop!”
“Uh, what about using a carrier pigeon
or two, because it will be a bit of a
blighter sneaking through the Jerries on a
bike, even if it is a Triumph?”
“Sorry Percy, no can do. The
Pigeon network is down. That cunning
Rommel and his sidekick von Melenthin
magnetized the pigeon feed, and now the
birds don’t even know which way is up!”
“Righto then Grenville, I’ll give it a
bash… but only if I can use that colonial
chappie Jumbo Botha’s new prototype
900 Triumph scrambler. You see he’s
done a bit of work on it, and it’s really
cool, and easier to ride than one of those
crappy BSA clunkers. After all, it’s got
better rear shocks, little hand-grenade
valve cap thingies, a Union Jack key,
proper scrambler bars with a leather-look
bash pad, and a recessed fuel cap, so I
won’t snag my important bits If I slip up
the tank. Also it goes like the wind, well
relatively, that is, thanks to a very trick
2 into 1 pipe we scored off the Yanks.
Some McQueen chappy who made an
escape from a Nazi lockup recently put us
onto it. It’s also painted real olive green
cammo, not that wimpy wavy stuff the
Eyties like to use… although I must say
that Italian cammo must work because
we never see those chaps.
Come to think of it we haven’t heard
much from them either, even though the
Desert Rats say they are around. Just
the other day, they said they came across a very strong
smell of olive oil and suntan lotion when out on patrol
near the Wadi. What’s more the Triumph starts at the
press of a button, idles like a Rolls, and never stalls or
has a flat spot. You see those Triumph techies have
actually fitted fuel injection, cleverly hidden inside a
standard looking carburetor. That’s just in case this bike
falls into the hands of the Afrika Korps. We wouldn’t like
them to pass on this trick technology to those BMW
chappies would we?
Talking of the fuel injection stuff reminds me that the
tank is big enough to carry enough petrol for a long slog
through the sand, and if it’s runs out Jumbo has clapped
a half a gallon jerry can on the side. If your dispatches
aren’t too big they will fit into the little message box on
the back. And one more thing, Jumbo junked the little
brakes, and fitted some rather nifty wavy discs, must be
more of McQueen’s influence”
“Percy, if you don’t stop flapping your mouth about
this Triumph, Rommel will be here and you will have lot’s
of time to learn German when we are all in the pen…
if we even make it, because old Erwin has lots of those
Tiger tanks and stuff like that, and he seems in a hurry
to get us before Monty hears we are in the soup, so to
speak. So vamoose, take your sarmies and duck!”
“Tally Ho chaps, I’m outa here… Brrraaaaaap!”
Jumbo Botha’s cool dispatch bike replica was lent to
us buy Fourways motorcycles, and is actually for sale
there, so call Riaan Fourie if you want something really
eye-catching and different that is really great fun to ride,
very practical as an everyday runner and is based on the
latest Triumph 900 EFI Scrambler….
GS QUALIFIER
We go and kuier at the GS Trophy Qualifier
event in Benoni on the East Rand…
By now you must be familiar with
the Trophy initiative by BMW. If
not – here is how it all works.
“Calling all GS owners to be
selected as the top three South
African riders and to be inducted
into the GS Trophy Hall Of Fame.
Be part of the adventure of a
life time!
The GS Trophy South Africa
Qualifier events will take place
on 9 April 2016 at various venues
throughout the country to select the
best three riders in South Africa.
Qualifying criteria for regional
events:
Regional one day qualifying
events. Final Trophy qualifying
3 day event. Regional teams
from each qualifying region to
compete at GS trophy South
Africa event; ultimately resulting in
selecting the top region in South
Africa. Selection of the best 3
riders in South Africa and team
announcement will take place at
Drakensville.
Display Skills challenge at BMW
training highly recommended.
One day event will be tested on
riding skill and technique, based
on intermediate level off road
riding course.
Selection of winner’s criteria
is based on the International
GS trophy qualifying rules and
regulations.”
So we dragged our asses out
morning and headed for the
fantastic adventure parts specialist
40 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE MAY 2016
Touratech offices where a pretty
impressive obstacle course had
been laid out for an eager group of
20 or so competitors. Let’s not kid
about – it’s all pretty “Ho Hum”,
easy on a dirtbike, but to drag a
big Beemer around and through
and over this lot is a bit of – well a
challenge for most.
We are pretty impressed at
some of the skills displayed on
the day –especially by some
of the lady riders – and we
discovered that, although the
F800GS is smaller than the big
1200, the 1200 seems to turn
better – thus doing better in most
of the challenges than the smaller
siblings. Another though struck us.
Why the heck does no-one do this
on a li’l 650. You’d kill it!
Anyway – who are we to ask doff
questions like that?
It really was a fascinating
day out with GS riders riding in
circles, figures of eight, up hills,
down hills, through puddles, fast,
slow, medium and – even pulling
their bikes backwards. The skills
challenge even included a little ride
in a canoe, which was a real hoot.
It’s great to see a manufacturer
that is so pro-active at giving
their riders something to do with
their bikes. We’ll cover this lot
through the year – and hopefully,
one day when we are big, we’ll
crack the nod to cover the world
championships.
In the interim, enjoy the pics
and – if you are a big GS fan – go
and take part next time – it looks
like fun.
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE MAY 2016 41
NEW RIDING JEANS:
SPARTAN JEANS:
Here’s the thing. It’s easy to find good
riding jackets, gloves, boots and helmets
with good protection for everyday
riding, but not so for trousers. There
are a number of very good riding pants
to match or compliment a good riding
jacket, but if you wear them for everyday
commuting, or on a breakfast run or
weekend jaunt you end up looking like a
storm trooper when you stop. Also rain
proof body armour equipped pants are
usually hot and bulky, and are only worn
because they do the job when you are
actually on your bike.
So what’s the alternative? Most riders
simply rely on normal jeans. They are
comfortable, socially acceptable and
reasonably long lasting. Sadly, in real
terms you might as well be wearing just
your underpants. Modern jeans are made
out of regular cotton and on a scale of
one to ten for abrasion resistance on
tarmac are right at the bottom. So what
solutions are there?
Over the past few years jeans have
become available featuring better material,
body armour and better protection. Most
of them are better than ordinary jeans, but
many still have some negative features,
like poor fit, bulky protective panels or
high price. Luckily for bikers, as time goes
by newer and improved products are
becoming available.
The latest offering in protective jeans
are the”Spartan” Brand, imported and
distributed by DMD just in time for
winter. Although the name is new in SA,
the manufacturer of Spartan Jeans is
Oxford Products, a very well-known and
respected UK brand which has been
represented here for a long time, and is
carried by most good motorcycle dealers.
We tried out a couple of pairs recently.
They are manufactured from top class
material. The outer shell is 100% heavy
duty cotton, the style and cut just like top
of the range original Levi 501’s. They have
the same straight cut legs, 5 pockets and
no external zips to scratch your tank.
They are high cut and allow a normal
shortish riding jacket to cover the top for
comfort and protection and also to cover
the belt, again so that it doesn’t scratch
any bodywork.
The “Aramid” material, which is another
name for abrasion resistant stuff like
Kevlar, is not bulky and is sewn into all the
right areas inside the jeans. There is also
a thin cotton flap covering the hip area of
the jeans to stop the abrasion resistant
material from irritating you skin, and
there is a discrete pocket sewn into the
front knee area to hold a soft high impact
resistant knee protector, which is supplied
with the jeans.
Our experience with these jeans is that
their fit is really good. Two completely
different shaped riders, one slim and
trim, the other more “Mature” and in both
cases they fit and feel just like normal
quality jeans and are comfortable to wear
all day. In hot weather you will notice the
protective material because the pants feel
warmer than thin cotton jeans, but on the
other hand this will be welcomed in cooler
weather. If we ever have the misfortune
to experience how they work in a fall we
will let you know, although of course we
would prefer not to!
ADVENTURE
B i k e r s W a r e h o u s e ’ s
RALLYE 701’S
The ride is a challenging crosscontinental
ride which will start
on the east coast at Mombasa
in Kenya on 1 June 2016 and
end at Matadi in DRC on the
west coast at the end of that
month, having passed through
or around the dense equatorial
Congolese jungle as well as the
origins of the Congo and Nile
rivers, a 7 500 kilometre passage,
apparently never attempted on
motorbike before.
Titled Safari Kwa Afrika Bora,
Swahili for Journey for a Better
Africa, the 2016 ride aims to
raise $3 million for the Nos
Vies en Partage Foundation,
an independent charitable
foundation set up by Randgold
in 2014, and headed by the
company’s former chairman
Philippe Liétard, which is
mandated to help fight poverty in
Africa, with a particular focus on
needy women and children that
have been left behind by society.
Previous rides raised $2.5 million,
which has been distributed
to more than 55 entities in 15
different African countries.
The ride will pass through the
Democratic Republic of Congo,
where the Foundation has already
committed itself to the support
of projects designed to support
abused women and rehabilitate
child soldiers as part of that
country’s post-conflict reparation
programme.
Anyway – the guys from Bikers
Warehouse were tasked with the
supply and build of the bikes that are
suitable for a grand adventure of this
nature. The light, nimble 701’s fit the
bill, Mike and his team then set about
making them adventure ready…
We went to check them out at the
Nite-X track just off Malibongwe Drive.
Given that very little has been made
for the 701’s just yet, they employed
the skills of some of the best
craftsmen in SA to fulfil this task.
One of the most important factors
is the fuel range – and Mike Puzey
himself designed the long range
tanks using cardboard templates on
either side of the bike. These were
fitted, tweaked, sworn at, retweaked,
trimmed, re trimmed, sworn at again
– and transferred to lightweight
aluminium plate. These were neatly
welded into 5 litre a side long range
fuel tanks. Riding the bike, you
realise how cunning the design is
– the bike still feels and looks quite
narrow – a lot less bulky than you
would expect. The standard fuel
tank, which doubles as a polyamide
sub-frame, is one litre bigger than
the KTM’s, at 13 litres, add the side
tanks and you have a total of 23
litres to play with.
The next issue would have to
be crash protection. For this task,
the boys employed the services
of Rumbux, the guys who are
responsible for literally thousands of
aftermarket solutions in South Africa.
They measured and hummed, hawed
micro metred and got the hack saws
and welders out.
The resultant skid plated, crash
guards and pannier mountings are
THE 2016 2-STROKE ENDURO MODEL RANGE.
The joy of the ride is often in finding routes that nobody else has used – reaching
destinations that few others would dare to aim for. The 2016 Husqvarna Motorcycles
2-stroke enduro bikes rely on exceptional agility, a broad powerband and light
weight – letting you easily explore wherever you choose to go.
world class, testimony to how skilled
this Pretoria based outfit is. It looks
and fits like factory finish.
To protect the levers from the
inevitable tumble, Bikers selected the
almost bulletproof Cycra handguards.
Engine casings have undergone
the Hyde products touch with Hyde
Carbon Fibre covers mounted on the
clutch and generator covers.
The bar mounted Micro screens
were manufactures in-house and are
available as a bolt-on extra at Bikers
Warehouse.
Not too much fiddling with the
electrics, but they have mounted
some very bright LED spots on either
side of the headlamp – riding late on
adventures like this is often inevitable.
They have also mounted a very neat
USB charger to run the GPS and
charge any bits and bobs like cell
phones and camera’s alongside the
Scotts steering damper.
Their choice of tyre – the Metzeler
Karoo 3 a well known, well rated tyre.
All in all a very neat job. The
designs are practical and they do not
interfere with the feel and function
of the 701. AND, when you are done
with that adventure, you can simply
unbolt it all and use your bike for
weekends and commuting again.
We’ll do a follow up feature on
the bikes and this event when they
return in a month or so. Next year,
there will be an extra bike so that we
can tag along…
Any queries, give the guys from
Bikers Warehouse a call.
Our tester: Shirleen (Slush)
Rossouw has been riding for her
whole life – never racing, always
social. Her collection of bikes has
included the YZ125, the TW200,
the Burgman 400 and currently a
CRF250X. So when we asked her
to come down a notch and ride the
humble 230, she was initially not
overly enthusiastic… Until she got her
bum in the saddle. She says…
“You buggers are lucky – who gets
to go riding on a Friday morning?”
and off we went, she on the brand
spanking new unit from BB Honda
Zambesi, and our galoot on a slightly
(read VERY) older model. The beauty
of having our office where it is, is
that you can hit the trail (Perfectly
designed for a little bike like this) from
the gate for a quick 20 km lap and
really shake out the cobwebs.
When we got back, we sat down to
compare notes and this is what she
had to say…
I’ve always looked at the old 230’s
and though “Farm Bike.” And to some
extent, I believe that that is correct,
but with the new styling, this Honda
will appeal to a far greater audience it
looks modern and is quite pretty.
Jumping on board, I was
immediately aware of the cool ride
height. My 250 is a bit taller, so it was
great to be able to put my feet on the
ground and not feel intimidated. The
bike feels small and compact and
that’s great!
I know that many lady riders and
kids will agree that these are very
important factors when purchasing
any bike.
I started looking around for the
kickstarter – and there was none. Very
impressed that this little bike comes with
a happy button. I spent my life kicking
on the YZ, so this is a proper bonus!
I tested the clutch, it felt nice and
soft, the front brake is easy to reach
… the back brake felt a bit funny
compared to mine. I asked why and discovered that it
has a drum brake out back rather than the usual disc
brakes that I’ve always had.
We headed off into the veld:
Compared to my 250, the 230 feels very light and
nimble. I found that I’m quite confident throwing it
into corners, because the power is so consistent.
My 250 is slightly more powerful, and I tend to shift
gears a lot when I ride. On the 230, you can lug along
in the midrange and just open up when you need to.
Compared to what I was expecting – I found the power
very impressive.
All round, the 230 is very easy to ride – and,
surprisingly, it’s a lot more nippy than I expected. We
rode through some deep puddles, up and down little
hills (please see the pic when one of us ran out of talent)
and generally had a proper good time. The brakes were
perfect for a little bike, although I have been told that
drum brakes to tend to fade over time and they need
constant adjusting.
On the way home, we swapped bikes, so I got on to
the (much) older CRF. I was amazed that it felt Identical
in terms of build and comfort and riding position. What
I did notice on a badly rutted section on the way back
was that the new bike seems to have much better
suspension. I and not sure whether Honda has updated
the suspension, or whether it is just because the bike is
new, But it did feel slightly more forgiving. And I have to
say that the new bikes back brake actually worked, where
on the old one, I kinda overshot a few of the corners.
In Conclusion:
Would I buy one?
For sure! I am accustomed to my 250, so that is more
exciting, but I would have liked to have owned one of
these along the way, Just to get the hang of riding offroad
without any intimidation or worries. It really is a great
little bike and my advice to anyone who is looking to start
in this awesome sport, go and get one!
At 40 odd grand, it’s not cheap, but, when I compare
prices in the motorcycle industry, it is probably the best
value for money around at the moment. And, I’m not
sure, other than something like KTM’s freeride, whether
any of the other manufacturers offer a new bike like this
in South Africa.
An overcast sky and the threat
of rain greeted contestants in
the second event in the Monster
Energy TRP Distributors SA MX
Nationals at Zone 7. The rain
earlier on in the week had left
the track nice and tacky, and
everyone was raring to ride.
That promise of rain became
real as the clouds opened up
on the contestants towards the
end of the practice session, but
it was not enough to douse the
fun, and it was just what the
track needed.
Racing began at 10am and the
sun shone for a bit, but for the
rest of the day it was a mix of
sun and cloud-cover as the
riders went through their paces.
Cape Town’s Antony Raynard, a
fan favourite, did not disappoint
and took the win in both the
MX2 heats, giving him the
first place spot in the overall
placings in that division.
He was in good form, and gave
the contestants in the MX1
category a solid run for their
money as well, gunning for the
top spot but securing a very
satisfying second place.
In the MX1 division it was points
leader Neville Bradshaw who
managed to stave off Raynard
and all other competition to
retain his number 1 spot.
“Conditions were extremely
rough, with soft sand and a bit
of mud from the rain during
the week,” said Raynard,
describing the day’s conditions.
“It was totally different to the
usual Cape Town ride, but it
was a good national track.”
Despite this, he had an
yesterday. The only person I was watching
closely was Neville (Bradshaw). He was
A persistent Ryan Hunt shook things
THE CHALLENGE IS ON
AS FIRST POINTS ARE
ON THE SCOREBOARD
With the first points of the 2016 National Cross
Country Championship for Motorcycles and
Quads on the scoreboard, the battle for the
various title challenges is on and an exciting
season is being predicted.
The recent Vryburg Race was the first of five
rounds of the South African National Cross
Country Championship and the first of three which
are combined with the Donaldson Cross Country
Championship for Production and Special Vehicles
and sharing race weekends seems popular with
the motorcycle and quad racing fraternity.
The classes were jam packed and it became
quite clear that it will not be plain sailing for any
title hopefuls this year. In the OR1 (Open Class)
Championship, Michael Pentecost (Proudly
Bidvest Yamaha) has built a small lead of three
points ahead of Botswana’s Ross Branch (Brother
Leader Tread KTM) who is only two points ahead
of the defending champion, Kenny Gilbert (Kargo
Racing Husqvarna). Former off-road champion,
Altus de Wet (BCR Arrow Racing Yamaha) is not
too far behind in fourth place with Ruan Smith
(Sherco Racing SA) rounding out the top five.
The defending OR2 (250cc) Champion, Louw
Schmidt (Brother Leader Tread KTM) had a
problematic start to the season and will have to
fight his way back from 11th place, just behind
Roan Lindsay (Sherco Racing SA) whose season
also did not start according to plan. At the front,
the 2015 runner-up, Jaycee Nienaber (D&H
Engineering Works Yamaha) is leading after
claiming the first victory with Alastair Drennan
(KTM) second and Hein Jnr van Niekerk (Doorzone
Bikers Warehouse Husqvarna) third, two point
behind Drennan and five behind Nienaber.
Brett Swanepoel (Proudly Bidvest Yamaha)
opened the defence of his OR3 (200cc) title with
a victory, but the battle between him and the
2015 runner-up, Jarryd Coetzee (Brother Leader
Tread KTM) has flared up again with Coetzee
second after the first race, three points behind
the defending champion. Darren MacLeod (D&H
Engineering Works Yamaha) is currently third.
MacLeod’s young team-mate, Adriano Catalano is
Like Louw in the OR2 class, his team-mate
and defending Senior Champion, Juan van
Rooyen, will also have to defend his title
from the back of the pack while newcomer,
Warrick van Schalkwyk (Yamaha) leads the
championship after a debut victory at Vryburg.
Wynand Kleynhans (Yamaha) is second
followed by the enduro specialist, Bruce May
(Agrisales Peak Yamaha Racing).
The Master Class Championship brims with
former champions with one of these champs,
Wayne Farmer (Doorzone Bikers Warehouse
Husqvarna) the leader after taking the win in
his first attempt in this class. Pieter Holl (KTM)
and Johan Gray (KTM) rounds off the podium.
Izak Mans (Droomers Yamaha) leads the new
125cc Challenge with Taye Perry (KTM) the
leading lady in the Ladies Class and Riaan
Prinsloo (Yamaha) out front in the Silver Class
Interprovincial Challenge.
In the quad category, the defending
champion, Brian Baragwanath (Proudly
Bidvest Yamaha) has his work cut out for
him as he will have to make up five points
from his current third place in the Open
Quad Championship to the leader, André
Park (Yamaha) who will fight tooth and nail to
defend his position after winning at Vryburg.
The 2015 runner-up, Stefan Swanepoel
(Yamaha) is second with Russell Ferreira
(Yamaha) fourth and Johan Oosthuizen
(Yamaha) in fifth place.
The 2014 and 2015 Master Class Champion,
George Twigge (Yamaha) opened his 2016
scorecard with a victory, but two new names
found themselves on the opening podium –
Petrus van Heerden (Honda) second and Stef
Bester (VANS Racing Division Yamaha) third
after good results at the season opener.
Megan Stander (Suzuki) leads the High
School Class from Morné Jansen van Vuren
(Yamaha).
SOCIAL RIDES ARE SO GREAT FOR SOME R&R. This one took
place on the outskirts of Parys, through a collection of farms in
the area. Its all very chilled with lots of people always on hand
to help out and laugh and have a great time. ~the routes are
varied and always fun. This is one of the few outfits that cater
for everyone, with escape routes on all the more technical stuff
that scares the mealie field racers and weekend warriors. Great
fun. Come and join the next one. (011) 979-1363
THE BATT PRO XTREME 140/80/18
In my opinion, the all-new Batt
Pro Xtreme tyre is one of the
ultimate off-road tyres to hit
the shelves in South Africa.
The newly developed tyre
knobbly design has generated
the perfect amount of grip
and traction that gives you
great performance in both
dry and wet conditions. The
soft/intermediate tyre allows
great support in the carcass
as well in the side walls, which
allows you to run extremely
low pressures between 0.4
-1 bar. The FIM requirements
only allow the knobs to be
a maximum of 14mm and
the Batt Pro Xtreme is a FIM
approved tyre.
The Batt Pro Xtreme warms
up once riding and the knobs
allow a much softer feel, this
helps a lot in the extreme
enduro sections. The new
sharp edge tread blocks on
the rear tyre have made a huge
difference to the performance
in the wet conditions. It has
very good life support in the
tyre and can last up to 450km
without shedding knobs.
The tyre gives a rider great
confidence and feels stable
under high speed braking. The
tyre gives great control and
traction out of the corner once
the power has been put down.
The Batt Pro Xtreme has
proven tread patterns, rubber
compounds and competitive
pricing make them a great
choice. Tested in the toughest
Off Road Racing and Enduro
environments, the range of
BATT Tyres are experiencing a
massive growth in popularity
with both racing pros and
weekend warriors alike.
YAMAHA SUPER TENERE SETS OUT FOR GLOBALRIDER,
A SOLO JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD
Telefonica Yamaha Globalrider is an
epic adventure that will take Hugo
Scagnetti on a once-in-a-lifetime
trip around the world. However, this
magnificent journey is not aimed at
personal glory; there are far more noble
goals for the Globalrider project you
never thought about.
Scagnetti battled severe injuries in his
legs caused by a vascular necrosis
and promised that, if he ever walked
again without crutches, he would travel
the world to raise money for scientific
research. Globalrider is his project
that will “broadcast and raise funds to
support the work of scientific research
centers dedicated to the field of tissue
regeneration using stem cells in children.”
After surmounting numerous obstacles
over the past 13 months, Hugo is now
ready to take on an amazing adventure,
with massive support from Yamaha
Motors, the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP
team and Telefonica. His journey will
kick off on May 27 in Spain’s capital of
Madrid, at the Telefonica’s offices, and
will head for France, Italy, Greece, and
Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan,
Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
A plane will then fly him to US land in
San Francisco, before heading north to
Seattle, and then crossing the country to
reach Miami in Florida. Next stops are the
UK and Spain back home.
Thanks to Telefonica and all the
communication technologies that will go
into his Yamaha XT1200Z Super Tenere,
Hugo Scagnetti will be able to shoot a
complex documentary of his ride. Both
him and his bike will be loaded with
sensors that will take care of telemetry,
connectivity, geolocation, and social
networks, as well as monitoring Hugo’s
medical status remotely. It looks like this
epic journey will be as much a test for
Telefonica’s M2M and Internet of Things
technologies as it will for Hugo and his
Super Tenere.
All the donations and benefits from the
distribution rights of the documentary
will be directed to the Puerta de Hierro
Hospital in Madrid and its stem cell tissue
regeneration research team.
