Redbridge Sports & Leisure Jack Petchey The evening of Monday 17th September 2007 saw 17 local children receive achievement awards for their commitment to their chosen sport. All the children train at Redbridge Sports and Leisure, which is one of over 1,000 clubs participating in the Jack Petchey scheme within London and West Essex. The scheme provides over £1m each month in support of sports clubs and schools, and is aimed at Young People aged between 11-25. One winner was Matt Gillingham, an 18 year old former Trinity Catholic School student, who combines a part-time football coaching role at the Centre, alongside playing for newly promoted Dagenham & Redbridge F.C. His passion for football and sport in general helps to inspire the young children he coaches, and his award will help provide additional equipment for the children to help aid their own development. The presentation evening was organised by Gemma Sewell (Assistant Manager, Outdoor Sports), was hosted by Matt Reynolds (Assistant Manager, Business Development) and the awards were presented by Norman Booth (Chairman). Chris Bullock, the Foundation Awards Officer for East London, spoke on behalf of Jack Petchey saying how the achievement Outdoor Arena FOOTBALL Late Spring Clean ! Both floodlit all weather Astroturf pitches have recently �� preparation for the Winter Season. This maintenance work, to improve drainage and increase the vitality of the pitch surface, has given a refreshing new look and regular users are happy with the knowledge that the playing surface is enhanced & safer. Junior Football Course �� Redbridge Junior Football Course are looking for 5-8 awards scheme continues to grow, and how fantastic it is to see children in Redbridge having a positive impact within the local community. The awards covered a six-month period from January to June 2007, and winners came from sports ranging from Hockey to Gymnastics. Each individual received a certificate of recognition, a medallion and a Jack Petchey Award Winners badge, and the club they represent received a cheque for £200, with the winner asked how they would like the money to be spent. The picture above features some of the winners: year olds to join our development programme on Saturday mornings on our Astroturf pitches. The programme is run by FA qualified coaches who are fully CRB checked and Child Protection certified. The development programme is geared around individual technique to help young players be more comfortable with a football. All players receive a free ball upon joining, which they keep and use to complete fun tasks set by the coaches to maximise noncontact time. Our affiliation with Newbury Forest Football Club means players can join a team and enter into fun, yet competitive matches to further their learning and development. We currently have an U9 and an U10 team in the Barking Youth League. Our philosophy throughout the club is player development and complete inclusiveness for all. Players of all abilities are welcome and will be given every opportunity to learn new skills; much of the work we do is individual and encourages maximum contact with the ball. Page 2

We are continually looking to add to our younger age groups and would like to have under 8, 7 and 6 year old teams. Despite missing the start of this season, we are able to arrange friendly matches for teams, a good environment for the players to play as a team and add to their learning of the game. If you have or know someone in school year 3 or below who would like to join, please contact us and we will be happy to introduce them to our programme. Do you have experience in coaching 5 � 14 year olds? We require a Head Football Coach to oversee the operation and formulate the content of the weekly junior football programme. You will be responsible for providing quality, fun and safe coaching sessions in a secure learning environment, acting in accordance with all procedures laid down by Redbridge Sports Centre Trust and being a mentor to the assistant coaches. Interested please send your CV to Gemma Sewell. GRASS PITCHES Still looking for a home ground? �� and 2 mini pitches here at RSL, we only have availability for 1 more team on a Sunday. Here at RSL you can expect ample car parking, full changing/showering facilities, nets/corner flags to be ready and waiting for the start of your game and access to the main centre bar, where hospitality food can be arranged. NETBALL Here at Redbridge we try to cater for all ages and abilities of netballers � from 8 to 80 year olds � you are all welcome! Junior Netball Course We currently have spaces on our Junior Netball Course for 8-11 year olds on a Monday 4.30pm � 5.30pm. This is a good introduction to the game and further basic skills. Courses are usually run on a 10week block basis (payable in advance) but you can join in anytime. RSC Youth N.C. In its 3 rd year now, RSC Youth N.C. has approximately 25 girls on the books. This is a non-elitist club and is open to girls from school year 7 upwards and takes place on the outdoor courts between 5.30pm � 6.30pm on Mondays. Earlier this year 18 girls plus a few parents and �� Court to watch the England Netball Squad in action, seeing 2 games, one against Australia and one against New Zealand. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the evening even though it was a nightmare on the trains that day! The outing was paid for out of Jack Petchey funds previously awarded to Ellie Rabey, Olivia Walters and Jane Porter, who are all current members of RSC Youth N. C. Any girls interested in joining are more than welcome to just turn up any Monday and see how they get on; if they like it � great - see one of the coaches for more joining information. An ideal session for ladies returning to the game after a lengthy absence, those new to the game or those looking for an alternative workout to keep fit. If you need an incentive to take up netball again, look out for special promotions such as 2 for the price of 1 over the oncoming months. For more details, contact Gemma Sewell, details above. RSL Leagues The Monday and Wednesday winter leagues commenced on the 8 th October and will run through to March. Approximately 49 teams have entered this season, 5 more than last winter. As previously, there are divisions of differing abilities and experience and this �� again, giving every team the opportunity to compete against teams of similar ability. The �� rally took place 22nd Sept with N.V. N. V Netball Team winning and Foresters as runners-up. HOCKEY Competitions The Outdoor Arena will once again be hosting some prestigious hockey events this year. The Essex County Cup took place at the beginning of September with the Essex Trophy to be hosted on Sunday 6 th April 2008. Various hockey development days for age groups U11 � U16 are taking place throughout September followed by East of England tournaments throughout October. There are �� Championships taking place plus events run by Redbridge and Ilford Hockey Club, who are based here at RSL.
