elcome to the November edition of 

W Redspot: Our new Olympic Hall 

is nearly complete and is beginning to 

look quite magnificent. This stunning 

achievement is due in no small part to 

the vision and unstinting efforts of Paul 

Clarke, our Appeal Board Chair, and 

our Chief Executive, Ken Leggate, the 

latter not merely for his painstaking 

attention to the construction of the 

building throughout this year and to the 

week-by-week funding of the project. 

For, while that has by itself been a 

Herculean task, the marathon journey 

has taken much longer. 

It is several years since we made a 

commitment to apply for Training Venue 

status at the Olympics. There were 

several facets to the project and the 

number of meetings and detailed 

negotiations soon multiplied. First, we 

needed separate and lengthy 

agreements with the Olympic Delivery 

Authority (ODA), who would help 

finance our new facilities, and with the 

London Organising Committee of the 

Olympic Games (LOCOG) who would 

manage their usage in Summer 2012. 

Next, we needed to negotiate the 

freehold of our site from the London 

Borough of Redbridge, this being a 

precondition of any award of Olympic 

funds. 

Third, we needed to raise over £5mn. 

The cost of the venture 

proved to be in excess 

of £7mn and we were 

able to provide £2mn of 

internal funds. Through 

the good offices of our 

M.P, Lee Scott, the 

Appeal was launched 

at the House of 

Commons on 27 th 

21st October 2011 

November 2008.

member and a keen badminton player of 

some standing, had drawn up exciting 

plans for the new building, ready for the 

work to go to tender. 

But first, all these lengthy negotiations 

had to be concluded and they came to 

fruition in February 2010 when we 

signed agreements with ODA and 

LOCOG at the top of Barclays Bank 

Tower in Canary Wharf. Invitations to 

tender then went out and the contract 

was awarded to Keir (Eastern) in July. 

The Olympic bodies were now ready to 

announce the first successful gamestime 

Training venues and they chose our 

Redbridge site at which to do so on 1st 

October 2010. (Lord) Seb Coe (LOCOG) 

and John Armit (ODA) awarded the 

Training Venue plaque to us and Mayor 

Boris Johnson announced at the same 

time that we had been granted £200,000 

from his Playsport London Fund. 

Building proper began in January of this 

year. Completion is due in early 

December and work is currently on 

schedule. The hall looks really stunning 

and we plan a formal opening in March 

of Olympic year. 

Little has been asked of our members 

until now, though some have contributed 

generously to the Appeal. As 2012 

approaches, we very much hope that all 

members will support us by committing 

to the Centre for the year. It will be 

necessary to close the site completely to 

members for 4 weeks across July and 

August. Alternative facilities for most 

activities are being secured, most likely 

at Caterham School. I very much hope 

that all members will see this 

inconvenience as a price worth paying 

for the Olympic status we now have and 

for the wonderful new facilities we are to 

enjoy. I take pride in this achievement 

and hope all our members will share this 

as they continue to enjoy their 

membership.

REWARDING YOUNG PEOPLE 

The winners of the prestigious Jack Petchey Awards 

celebrated their achievements on Monday 12th 

September 2011 at RS&L with family members, 

coaches and Centre staff. All the children train at 

the Centre and won £200 each for their respective 

sport/club to either purchase kit and equipment, 

further training or club days out - the children have 

to suggest to their coaches 

how they would like to see the 

money spent. 

Overall the Jack Petchey 

Achievement Awards have 

provided over £50m in support 

of sports clubs and schools 

throughout London and Essex, 

and is aimed at young people JAN - JUNE 2011 WINNERS 

aged between 11-25. 


FOOTBALL 

JUNIOR FOOTBALL COURSE 

The Junior Football Course at 

Redbridge continues to thrive. 

Chris Gladman, Head Coach, is 

extremely happy with the continued 

success of the Saturday morning 

sessions, which sees new young 

players joining every week. Chris 

congratulated the coaches who are 

delivering high quality and 

structured sessions with a big 

emphasis on developing team skills 

to enable players to progress to 

competing in Sunday Leagues 

through the link with Newbury 

Forest FC. This progression of 

course attendee’s moving onto 

competitive play in the Newbury 

Forest Youth teams continues to 

work well. The kids thoroughly 

enjoy the Saturday training and then 

put into their games what they have 

learnt the day before. Some of the 

older players who have been 

coached over the past number of 

years on a Saturday morning, have 

now left the Junior Course to start 

training with Newbury’s senior teams 

during the week to continue their 

development. Chris would like to 

thank all coaches for their hard work 

over the past year and also the 

youth team managers that often 

make an appearance on Saturday 

mornings and provide input/feedback 

to the coaches regarding the 

previous week’s matches, so 

coaches can focus on drills/areas 

that require strengthening. 

With on-going aims to expand the 

Junior Football Course and the 

number of Youth Teams, more 

casual assistant football coaches

BEALONIANS F.C. 

In the shadow of the new venue 

being built at Redbridge Sports 

Centre, nearly 1,000 Year 8 

children across the London 

Borough of Redbridge come 

together to participate in a day of 

sports, including football, hockey, 

tennis, netball and rounder’s plus 

numerous others. 

As a Charter Standard 

Development Club, working 

through Bill Blackwell who is the 

club’s ‘football development officer’, 

Bealonians volunteers took a day 

off work to help organise and run 

the boy’s football event for the day, 

ensuring it ran to schedule, 

refereeing the games and working 

out the winners. 

This year’s event on 28 th 

September saw 14 schools enter a 

team playing in two groups of 7, 

with the winners of each group 

playing each other and the 2 nd 

place teams battling it out for 3 rd /4 th 

place. Trinity school ran out the 

winners, and the lack of video 

evidence meant any bias towards 

Beal school or unfavourable 

decisions towards Ilford County 

High School (Old Parkonians) went 

unproven. 

In keeping with the Olympic theme 

each school represents one 

country, and through each sport the 

winners get maximum points and 

so on down, creating a good fun 

competitive environment.

On the football front, it was 

encouraging to see players 

attempting different skills, and one or 

two with exceptional ability and 

already part of the academies of 

clubs known to all of us. The slightly 

disappointing factor was the energy 

levels, but perhaps that was due to 

the exceptionally fine weather, which 

the Bealonian’s volunteers 

thoroughly enjoyed, nearly as much 

as their post-event review in the bar. 

An added bonus this year came as 

quite a surprise when we received 

this picture below (amongst others)! 

In conjunction with Adrian Newell, 

who has worked abroad on several 

occasions, Bealonains provided an 

old strip of our colours to be used in 

South Africa and clearly from the 

pictures we received back, it is being 

enjoyed by many (it seems a pair of 

our shorts has gone missing already 

looking at the back line). 

As always, Bealonians FC are 

looking for quality players to join the 

higher end of the club where our 1 st 

XI play in the Premier of the AFC 

(Amateur Football Combination). If

New Courts! All up & running! 

Hopefully, netballers will agree, that 

it was well worth the wait for our 

newly re-surfaced netball courts. 

There were a few teething 

problems to start with eg lights, 

footballs flying over the fences & 

onto the new courts 10-12 !! & 

some access issues, but all have 

now been resolved in time for the 

start of Essex Met league. 

You will all have obviously noticed 

the rise of the New Sports Hall from 

the old netball courts 6 to 9 at the 

Outdoor Arena? This brilliant new 

hall will, along with other sports & 

facilities, host 3 INDOOR Netball 

courts which can also turn into a 

show court with tiered seating (500 

capacity). 

Hopefully we will have some 

Premier/Showcase matches to look 

forward to watching along with 

some AENA tournaments. 

Invites will be sent out soon inviting 

representatives from local netball 

clubs, Essex Met committee and 

other interested parties to come 

and have a tour of the New Sports 

Hall and of course to “try out” the 

new courts.

Olympic lockdown 

Redbridge Sports & Leisure has 

been selected as one of the 25 

Games Time Training Venues for 

the London 2012 Olympic & 

Paralympic Games. Over £3m of 

the funding towards the £7.6m cost 

of building the New Sports Hall 

came from the Olympic Delivery 

Authority (ODA) so that the facilities 

would meet the required 

specifications for Olympic 

competition. These world class 

facilities will be available to all 

Centre users from January 2012 

and provide a legacy benefit of 

London 2012 for the whole of the 

local community. 

As a result of this prestigious 

honour, the Centre will be used 

exclusively by athletes throughout 

both Games periods. The Centre 

will be hosting the following: 

Olympic Games: Badminton, Judo 

& Wrestling 

Paralympic Games: Goalball 

The majority of facilities (including 

all indoor areas) will be unavailable 

to members for an estimated fourweek 

period in July/August 2012 

(see table above), meetings are 

available upon request – email

This is a once-in-a-lifetime 

opportunity for the Centre to host 

many of the World’s greatest 

athletes, and has been essential in 

securing the future of the Trust and 

in the development of the New 

Sports Hall which opens in January

Outdoor Arena playing facilities will be 

unaffected throughout; although the 

pavilion is closed including the 

changing rooms. A range of alternative 

venues/solutions are currently being 

considered for members use during the 

lockdown period and Management 

have worked over the last six months at 

finding the most suitable solutions for 

each membership type. 

A decision on lockdown strategy, 

including membership benefits and 

charges will be made by the Executive 

Board and all members will then be 

informed in writing of this strategy. Prior 

to a decision being made, Management 

have embarked on a number of Focus 

Group meetings across a range of 

Centre user groups in order to gauge 

member expectation and to gather 

feedback which is shaping the 

Management proposal to the Executive 

Board.

Wow, we are opening !!!!!!!!!!!! 

The most exciting time for 

badminton starts in December 

with the completion of our new 

Olympic standard badminton/ 

netball hall. The keys are being 

handed over early in December 

and the management team will 

move in connecting computers, 

moving offices and making sure 

everything works. 

During the following week we will 

be showing organised groups 

around the new facility, following 

on plans are in place for a whole 

host of special events and 

promotions. 

Key events for us will include a 

family Generation Game 

tournament, a Jazz Night party 

with our very own John Withers 

and the Centre Championships 

which I hope will be the best ever.

JUNIOR NEWS 

The changes in our junior 

programme have made a massive 

difference to the progression of our 

junior players. We now have three 

streams, which are proving effective. 

The junior courses programme is for 

beginners, players that are taking 

their Duke of Edinburgh Award, 

players who wish to play well but 

mainly for fun. The mini squad 

programme has been set up for 

young players who show talent and 

wish to follow a more competitive 

route. Finally our Performance 

programme, these players are 

currently training at Ilford County 

High School and will be returning to 

the Centre in January. The 

performance players are those that 

show talent, train a minimum of twice 

a week, enter tournaments and 

leagues. The majority have an 

England ranking. 

In April the players played in their 

first Performance quadrangle, they 

narrowly lost to Kent 5-4 but won 

overall beating Sussex and 

Hertfordshire. Jack Booth retained 

his British and World Transplant 

titles and has been shortlisted as an 

Olympic torchbearer.
