Family Fun at Fishpond

Help us celebrate the work at
Fishpond Wood that has seen it
transformed throughout 2015 –
the wood has been opened up,
the pond has been dredged, the
icehouse repaired, and the feel of
the 19 th century designed landscape
is once again evident. Time Spies
and Nature Detectives can try
their hand at an archaeological
excavation, discover what lurks
in the murky pond waters, and
explore the hidden heritage of the
woods. Open to all. There are no
facilities in the wood, and parking
is limited. Please park in Pateley
Bridge and enjoy the short walk
to Bewerley. Cost: Free. Drop in –

Heritage Skills: Dry
Stone Walling Taster Day
Wednesday 15, 10am to 4.30pm
Learn about the history of dry stone
walls, some of their features and the
theory behind this traditional skill,
before heading out into the AONB
for a hands-on walling session with
the Nidderdale AONB Walling
Group. Not suitable for under 16’s.
You will need: Sturdy footwear
(steel toe caps if possible) and old
clothes. At: Heathfield, near Pateley

Gouthwaite Farm
Heritage Walk
Wednesday 20, 5.30pm to 8.30pm
Join us for an evening walk
through the history of Gouthwaite
Farm, by kind permission of Mr
John Rayner. The walk takes in
sites from prehistory right through
to the building of the reservoirs
in the 19th century, and enjoys
spectacular views over Nidderdale.
Finish with supper overlooking
Gouthwaite Reservoir. The walk
is approximately 7km (4.5 miles)
and involves stiles and some steep
terrain off rights of way. Part of
the Festival of Archaeology. Meet:
Car park adjacent to Gouthwaite
reservoir (SE124698). Honesty
box parking. Cost: £7.50 per adult
(includes buffet supper). Under 16s

Big Dig: The Lost
Village of Lodge
Tuesday 12 to Saturday 23
Help us to unravel the story of the
abandoned village of Lodge as
part of a community archaeology
excavation led by archaeologists
from Solstice Heritage. The Big
Dig is open to adults and young
people over the age of 12 (12 to 18
year olds must be accompanied
by an adult). Full on-site training
will be provided. Bring lunch,
waterproofs and enthusiasm.
Watch out for some introductory
sessions ahead of the Big Dig. Full

Coldstones Quarry
Geology Walk
Tuesday 2, 6pm to 8pm
Take a look at the geology of
Coldstones Quarry from the inside
on this fascinating guided walk.
The walk will be on rough ground
and it may be muddy. Walking
boots and wind proof clothing are
recommended. Hard hats will be
provided. Meet: Coldstones Quarry
Offices, Greenhow. Entrance off
the B6265 at the Pateley Bridge side
of Greenhow. Cost: £5 per adult,
under 16s free. Booking essential.

Woods’ Cottage

This enchanting 17 th century
cottage is nestled amongst
woodland just over a mile from the
village of Galphay. It is privately
owned and isn’t normally open
to the public. It can be visited
as part of a 3.5 miles/5.5km
circular trail which also takes in
Azerley, Hubber Lane and returns
to Galphay via the beautiful
Braithwaite Hall. A route map
can be downloaded from www.
nidderdaleaonb.org.uk. There are
no facilities at Witch of the
Woods. Cost: Free. Drop in
