COWS AND WALKERS
Visit Nidderdale AONB 2016
Walk Nidderdale AONB
Walkers should be aware that cows, particularly those
with calves, can be dangerous, especially if you are
accompanied by a dog. By following this simple advice,
issued by the NFU and the Ramblers Association, walkers
can minimise the risk of an incident happening:
Don’t
X Don’t hang onto
your dog - if cattle
threaten you let it go
and the cattle will
chase the dog.
X Don’t get between
cows and their calves.
X Don’t put yourself at
risk - find another way
round the cattle and
rejoin the footpath as
soon as possible.
X Don’t panic or run
- most cattle will stop
before they reach you.
If they follow just walk
on quietly.
Do
p Do be prepared for
cattle to react to your
presence, especially if
you have a dog with you.
p Do move quickly and
quietly and if possible
walk around the herd.
p Do keep your dog
close and under effective
control.
p Do report any
problems to the highway
authority.
