Great days out Great days out ... Nidderdale AONB really does have something for everyone. Whether you like to just sit back and take it easy, have fun with your family, get the adrenaline pumping or soak up some heritage and culture we are certain you will find something to enjoy. Here are just a few ideas to get you started: ... to see wonderful wildlife Take an early morning trip to Upper Nidderdale to see if you can spot the elusive Black Grouse on moorland around Scar House Reservoir. En route back down the Dale visit the viewing point at Gouthwaite Reservoir, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and see how many species of bird you can spot. 34 © EM Gou thwait e Reservoir Visit the deer park at Studley Royal which is home to over 500 wild Red, Fallow and Sika deer. Amazing at any time of year but especially in the autumn during the rutting season. Spend some time exploring the Washburn Valley. With a wide range of habitats including pasture land, woodland, reservoirs, rivers and moorland, there is a vast range of wildlife to see. Timble Ings and Low Dam are especially good in the summer months as they are home to many species of Dragonfly. Take a walk in Hackfall which is a fascinating place for the keen naturalist. It is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the large number of birds, plants and invertebrates that make their home here. www.nidderdaleaonb.org.uk ... for families Visit one of the three ice cream parlours in the AONB - or try them all and decide which is your favourite. You’ll be spoilt for choice with a huge choice of flavours and the kids will have great fun trying out the play areas and activities that are on offer. Buy some delicious local food from Pateley Bridge and have a picnic in the large play area. Great for kids and big kids alike, the weird and wonderful rock formations at Brimham Rocks are a giant natural playground. See if you can find the Dancing Bear, The Eagle and The Gorilla, crawl through The Smartie Tube and balance on the Rocking Stones. Studfold Explore, Discover and Learn Trail will keep the kids occupied for hours with its range of fun and exciting activities. Solve clues to find secret boxes, follow giant footprints, search the wildflower meadow maze to find its secret, use your imagination in the giant storytelling chair, follow the trail to find the larger than life hedgehog and much more. Explore the 20 metre deep limestone gorge that is How Stean. At almost 1km long it can be explored via a network of narrow paths, bridges, tunnels and caves and provides an actionpacked day out for all the family! Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal is a wonderful day out with something for all the family. Explore the abbey ruins, admire the beautiful water gardens, enjoy a picnic, take part in crafts and activities and see if you can spot the deer in the deer park. ... if you love to be active Trek with a llama at Nidderdale Llamas and see the countryside in a really unique way. The llamas will become your companion for the duration of your trek and will even carry your kit for you. © PHP Llama tre kking Challenge yourself at How Stean Gorge with the Via Ferrata - an aerial network of beams, ladders and cables - or take part in outdoor activities such as climbing, canoeing or caving. Lace up your hiking boots and explore some of the amazing walking territory in the AONB. From long distance routes to easy strolls there is something to suit everyone’s ability and interest. Hire a bike (or bring your own) and explore the AONB on two wheels. With a vast network of quiet roads, country lanes and off road routes it is a cyclist’s dream. Explore the AONB on horseback. You don’t need to have your own horse or be an experienced rider as riding centres such as those at Bewerley and Masham offer guided treks for beginners. Hors e riding i n Bew erley ... if you like a bit of history Visit the stunning ruins of Jervaulx Abbey, near Masham. This wonderful site is a place of great beauty, tranquillity and history. It is privately owned and carefully managed with conservation in mind and has over 180 species of wild flowers and shrubs growing amidst its ruins. Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal World Heritage Site is a must! The site is home to a wealth of historic monuments including Cistercian abbey ruins, a Georgian water garden, a medieval deer park, an Elizabethan Hall and a Victorian church. Discover Yorke’s Folly which is a Grade II listed Folly that sits on the Nidderdale Way on the hillside above the village of Bewerley. Built in the late 18 th century it was designed to look like the ruin of an east window or church crossing. © PHP ... if you like local crafts Toft Gat e Li m e Ki l n Visit the King Street Workshops in Pateley Bridge, which is home to a small group of highly talented and skilled craftspeople who design and make exclusive pieces in a variety of materials including ceramic, stone, glass, precious metals and gemstones. Here you will also find the Number 6 Studio Gallery - a visual arts space where a varied programme of art courses and exhibitions take place throughout the year. Ramsgill Studio is a gallery and working studio selling a selection of quality and interesting arts and crafts, both traditional and contemporary. They also run a series of workshops which can be pre-booked. Visit Nidderdale AONB 2016 Great days out One of the shafts was blown down in a storm in 1893 and it is now known locally known as ‘Two Stoops’. Fishpond Wood is well worth exploring. Tucked away in Bewerley village it is a rare and regionally important example of a designed landscape from the 18 th century. It has recently undergone some restoration work including repairs to the icehouse and maintenance to its large pond. Toft Gate Lime Kiln, which was built in the 1860s, can be explored via a short trail with a series of information boards. Access is via a small car park on the outskirts of Greenhow. Masham is home to a wide range of craftspeople and their work can be viewed and purchased in one of the town’s many galleries.
