Welcome to Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty – one of Britain’s finest landscapes!
Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
(AONB) is a dramatic landscape of contrasts which
has been shaped over thousands of years by the
people who have lived and worked here. Whichever
part of the AONB you choose to visit you are sure to
be amazed at its beauty.
Discover the wonderful Nidderdale Valley - from
the remote heather moorland landscape of upper
Nidderdale, dotted with beautiful reservoirs and
charming stone built villages, to the river valley of
lower Nidderdale with its lush green pastures and
rolling farmland crisscrossed by dry stone walls. The
scattered remains of former mine workings and other
rural industries throughout the Dale remind us of the
area’s rich industrial heritage.
Explore Mashamshire and the monastic heritage of the
eastern part of the AONB with the magnificent World

Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal,
and the stunning historic parks & gardens of Jervaulx
Abbey and Hackfall. Delicious local produce can be
found in abundance with ice cream, preserves and
beer being just a few of the items on the menu.
Enjoy the beautiful Washburn Valley in the south
of the AONB, known to some as Yorkshire’s Lake
District. This area is a haven for wildlife with pasture
land, woodland, reservoirs, rivers and moorland, and
offers plenty of opportunities for walking, fishing, bird
watching and cycling.
