It affects everyone – including men and boys. According to the Washington State Domestic Violence Fatality Review, from January 1997 through June 2006 at least 359 people were killed by domestic violence abusers in Washington State. This number includes female victims as well as male and female children, friends, law enforcement, and family members. Men are great allies in ending domestic violence. Being a positive role model and speaking out against domestic violence, men can strongly influence their peers and raise awareness that violence is not acceptable. The last decade has seen a new wave of male activists and organizations in the field of domestic violence. They offer a different way of looking at the issue. Whether behind closed doors or in the open, men can confront other men. Violence is a part of our culture, we see it every day: school shootings, war, faith or sexual orientation based attacks, and gender violence. Nationally, most of these acts are committed by men. However, these perpetrators are the minority – most men in this country do not commit violent acts. Rape, sexual harassment, date rape, domestic violence: if society continues to call these things “women’s issues” doesn’t that naturally do two things? It takes the responsibility off the perpetrator and disengages men from the broader discussion. Men’s Network Against Domestic Violence is a local organization dedicated to ending all forms of violence against women. “The majority of men who are not violent are unaware of the potential for their voice and actions to make a difference and remain silent in the face of other men’s violence.” New approaches in the men’s movement make allies of men, rather than enemies. Men who take responsibility for their actions, break down old gender stereotypes, and take initiative in their community can partner with others to end domestic violence. According to the Men’s Network Against Domestic Violence, “In 2000, a study found that one in three Statewide Hotline (800) 562-6025 men did not actively support community efforts to stop violence against women because no one had asked them to get involved or they did not know how to help.” On Father’s Day 2003 many men including celebrities, authors, sports figures and CEOs joined a historic public statement to call for an end to violence against women. This statement appeared as a full page ad in the New York Times. This became known as the Founding Father’s Campaign backed by the Family Violence Prevention Fund (FVPF). “We call ourselves the Founding Fathers because we intend for this crucial beginning to give way to a new kind of society – where decency and respect require no special day on the calendar, where boys are taught that violence does not equal strength and where men stand with courage, lead with conviction, and speak with one voice to say, “No more.” The campaign has gained respect and strength over the years, and in 2008 the Founding Fathers will use Father’s Day to introduce a larger campaign, “One that encourages everyone, including mothers, fathers, grandparents and older siblings to give and teach respect.” Men in the domestic violence movement are becoming involved in different ways. They donate time and money to organizations that educate the community or provide life-saving services for victims of abuse. They serve as role models and speak out about the affects of abuse. They engage others to change stereotypes, and teach equality and peace to the boys in their lives. A united front in ending domestic violence
Domestic violence is not a gender issue. It affects
everyone – including men and boys. According to
the Washington State Domestic Violence Fatality
Review, from January 1997 through June 2006
at least 359 people were killed by domestic
violence abusers in Washington State. This
number includes female victims as well as
male and female children, friends, law enforcement,
Men are great allies in ending domestic violence.
Being a positive role model and speaking out
Nationally, most of these acts are committed
takes the responsibility off the perpetrator and
disengages men from the broader discussion.
Men’s Network Against Domestic Violence is a
local organization dedicated to ending all forms
men who are not violent are unaware of the
potential for their voice and actions to make
for their actions, break down old gender stereotypes,
and take initiative in their community can partner with
On Father’s Day 2003 many men including
an end to violence against women. This statement
This became known as the Founding Father’s
“We call ourselves the Founding Fathers
The campaign has gained respect and strength over
Dear Friends,
But He Never Hit Me is a book
I’m currently reading by Dr. Jill
Murray. The book is about nonphysical
abuse and unhealthy
relationships. We’ve come a long
way in terms of society addressing
physical abuse with improvements
in laws, the criminal justice system, the medical community
and more. However, seldom do we hear about the harsh
reality of verbal, psychological, and emotional abuse and the
impact it has on the lives of millions of women and children.
What is non-physical abuse? Verbal abuse can involve
name calling, nasty remarks, arguing until you give in or
being verbally threatened. Psychological abuse can include
isolation from friends, family and the outside world, constant
belittling, and telling you that you are worthless, threats
to harm family, children or friends, or fighting until you
are mentally exhausted. Emotional abuse can include such
things as controlling your dress or your actions, neglecting
your feelings, restricting who you see or what you do, always
Issaquah Women’s Club
In 2000 the Issaquah Women’s Club created an
educational scholarship fund for EDVP clients. This
fund was set up to aid in the educational needs for
victims of abuse. Thanks to their dedication and
fundraising efforts to date they have raised over $21,000
and 41 women have received scholarships toward their
educational needs. Helping women and children in need
is a core goal of the Issaquah Women’s Club through
its charitable arm, the Issaquah Women’s Foundation, a
nonprofit organization.
Last year alone, fourteen women received a scholarship.
The average scholarship is just over $500 which is
designated directly toward a woman’s tuition.
Scholarships aren’t the only contribution Issaquah
Women’s Club makes to EDVP. Members have also
held key positions on EDVP’s Board of Directors and
committees over the years. Through these positions they
brought their expertise to agency operations and services.
2
saying you are wrong or bad, and acting extremely jealous.
Many women live in this world of fear, humiliation, and
powerlessness. Their lives can seem out of control. Often
they feel if they change and/or do the “right thing” life will
be better and return to normal. Unfortunately, all too soon
the craziness begins to seem normal and there is a sense of
hopelessness and helplessness. EDVP can help. Our mission
is to end all forms of domestic violence. When you call the
Crisis Line there is a voice of hope. In our support groups,
women’s voices are heard and validated. If you are afraid
for your life, our shelters are a place of comfort and safety.
EDVP staff are trained to work with all forms of abuse. We
provide options and opportunities, choices and hope.
If you, a family member or friend have ever said “but he
doesn’t hit me.” Call EDVP. We can help.
Each year the Issaquah Women’s Club purchases a table at EDVP’s Safe Passage Breakfast, an educational event. Also, during their
monthly meetings the Volunteer Services coordinators, Betty Cobel and Barbara McCrone designate specific charities to which money
and specific “wish list” items are donated by the members. In January, they collected socks and slippers for all EDVP shelter clients,
many of which were knitted or crocheted by talented Club members. Additionally, thousands of dollars worth of additional items such as
toiletries, phone cards, and school supplies have been donated at meetings and delivered to the agency.
The Issaquah Women’s Club is truly committed to social human services and improving the well-being of the community. They also
contribute to other wonderful community programs such as the Issaquah Food Bank, Eastside Baby Corner, Issaquah Church and
Community Services, the Issaquah Community Center Summer Youth Program, and Issaquah Valley Senior Center.

Class Teaches More than
Martial Arts
Eastside Domestic Violence
Program started a new
type of class last summer.
And it continues to
make a huge impact
in children’s lives.
Both shelters, My
Friend’s Place and
My Sister’s Home,
brought in martial
arts expert, Vinnie
Geer, to lead a youth
martial arts class.
Vinnie’s normal class
centers on teaching children
and teens new ways of thinking
about discipline, self control, and respect. What started as a
donation of a few classes has evolved into a formal, weekly class
restructured to address the specific needs of children and teens
having witnessed domestic violence. The class called Mind,
Body, & Spirit Martial Arts, now also addresses creating new
ideas around power, peace, and family.
As with any new program the kids were tentative. Some
shuffled around the room, not quite sure what to make of it.
Slowly, with the guidance of Vinnie and staff, they became very
interested. “Soon we began to see the kids stepping forward to
overcome their own limitations and learning to be leaders,” said
Jen, Children’s Advocate.
One of the students in the class, a nine year old girl, was having
trouble learning a pattern of movements called a “Basic Form”
in order to be able to test for her next belt. She was so frustrated
she wanted to leave the program. She said, “I just can’t learn
it” and “It’s too hard.” She left the room in the middle of class.
Although her mother, sisters, staff and Vinnie kept trying to
motivate and encourage her, she still wanted to quit.
“What made the difference was not what we expected,” said
Jen. Everyone in the class had now passed the test to move on
to the next belt level except the nine year old girl. A 15 year old
boy in the class simply looked at her and said, “We’ve saved the
best one for last!” The girl looked at him with surprise. Having
him believe in her helped her believe in herself. The teenager
inspired the rest of the kids to help her with this difficult move.
They helped her practice all week and by the next class she
passed the test and received her belt.
To these kids it’s more than just a class. They look forward to
the next challenge. “This is what martial arts is really about,”
said Vinnie. “Inspiring greatness in each other and learning
how to become a leader.”
As is turns out, the kids inspired Vinnie too! Working with
children affected by domestic violence has had a great impact
on him. He completed EDVP’s volunteer training program
to ensure he knew as much about domestic violence when he
started volunteering his martial arts class last summer. Now
he is looking into creating his own non-profit to be able to
continue this work and help more children in the future.

Domestic Violence Statistics
Nationally, one in four women will experience abuse at some
point in her lifetime (National Coalition Against Domestic
Violence).
Domestic violence is a health care issue. Studies show the cost of
domestic violence exceeds $5.8 billion each year in the United
States, $4.1 billion of which consists of direct medical and
mental health care services alone (Family Violence Prevention
Fund, 2007).
There are an estimated 90,750 domestic violence incidents
in King County each year (2005-2006 Human Services Need
Update, Bellevue, WA).
From January 1997 through June 2006 at least 359 people were
killed by domestic violence abusers in Washington State. In
Volunteer Spotlight
Sue Galpin worked in the corporate world for many years and
had an active family life. She always promised herself when
she retired she would volunteer her time and knowledge to a
worthwhile cause.
In her previous human resource training Sue knew about
domestic violence. She also had friends that had gone through
abusive relationships and was there for them when they needed
someone to talk to.
“Hoping to combine my professional skills with my personal
desire to help children and families, I turned to the internet in
search of volunteer positions. EDVP was one of many listed.
Once I got to know the staff, I knew I was in the right place.”
Sue has volunteered in several areas within EDVP but she
does most of her volunteer work in the Resource Development
Department which is responsible for raising nearly half of the
agency operating budget. She lends support with marketing
materials, organization, reconciliation of events, administrative
support, and she creates the Holiday Program Wish Tags each
year. “I discovered my personality doesn’t really lean toward
volunteering in direct service, I would end up wanting to take
everyone home with me.”
“The most rewarding aspect of volunteering with EDVP for
me is working with the staff. There is a determination beyond
one’s imagination to help survivors, and put an end to domestic
violence. From the moment you begin working on a project,
the staff treat you as part of the team – asking for input and
initiating discussions over various projects. You are thanked and
given credit for the projects you work on. You are kept informed
“I’m Queen of the World!” shouts out an
eleven year old girl with arms open wide
while aboard the Mallory Todd Sailboat
courtesy of Sailing Heritage Society on
route with her family to the Parade of Lights in
downtown Kirkland during the holidays.
Sailing Heritage Society is an organization
that is committed to providing a unique
experience for children who may never
otherwise have the opportunity. In
December, this generous group donated
their time and sailboat once again to
EDVP’s shelter residents and their
children. “What a fantastic and
rejuvenating evening,” said a 37
year old program participant of
My Friend’s Place shelter.
Families fleeing domestic violence can
often feel overwhelmed and hopeless,
especially during the holidays.
However, with agencies like Sailing
A Night to Remember
6
as to the success of
projects you work on. You
leave the office feeling
that you have actually
helped to make an event
successful, or collect
donations, or send a child
to the movies.”
“We are thrilled to have
Sue working with us in
the Resource Development Department. Utilizing her office
management background and experience Sue has organized
and improved processes in our office which in turn has helped
the staff become more efficient. She takes on any project with
a great sense of humor and always raises the energy level in the
room as soon as she arrives. Sue is a brilliant colleague, tireless
volunteer and fabulous friend. She is a huge contributor to
the success of our Department!” Kelly Becker, Development
Director.
When asked what the challenges are, Sue states simply, “Not
getting over involved. The type of work EDVP does and the
success they share in converting abused women and children
into survivors is hard to walk away from.”
Sue and her husband Keith recently moved to Gig Harbor
where they are now in search of a non-profit where they can
volunteer their time together. Even though she’s no longer “onsite,”
Sue still finds time to drop by EDVP to say hello and
always offers to take projects home with her.
Heritage Society who contribute their time, effort, and
support they provide a unique and fun experience to
many residents of EDVP’s shelters each year. They are
committed to making a difference in their community.
One fifteen year old said, “It was a once in a lifetime
experience, I’ve never been on the water before.”
Domestic violence can affect women and children on
many different levels, often having an impact on
the rest of their life. Being on the open water, on a
beautifully clear night, the women and children
expressed feeling peace, feeling alive and as
one child put it: “My best holiday ever!” One
mother said, “I’m so inspired by other people’s
willingness to help and support us.” Sailing
Heritage Society helped create a wonderful
memory sure to last a lifetime and truly
made a difference for so many
during the holidays.

EDVP’s shelters and programs were full throughout
the holiday season. With your help we were able to
provide a fun and joyful holiday, including meals
and gifts, for all the women and children in our
