<strong>The</strong> <strong>Utzon</strong> <strong>Experience</strong>. A weeklong retreat at Canlis,<br />
<strong>Utzon</strong>s house in Mallorca in September 2016. <strong>The</strong>re<br />
you will get insights, inspiration, knowledge, tools<br />
and methods to develop your company.<br />

WHY<br />
<strong>The</strong>re is an increasing need to professionalise the business<br />
side of architectural companies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> leaders of architectural companies typically come<br />
from the architect profession, where training and focus on<br />
strategy, business-development, organisational structuring<br />
and governance is minimal.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Utzon</strong> <strong>Experience</strong> is designed to address the specificities<br />
of managing and leading architectural companies.<br />
WHO<br />
We are inviting 20 Next Generation leaders who are in<br />
the process of taking the decisive steps in their career and<br />
in the development of the company.<br />

Before the retreat we will meet for introductions, practicalities and kick-off.<br />
This will take place at Papirøen in Copenhagen, also arranged as webinar.<br />
FOLLOWING<br />
UP<br />
We will develop an alumni network - the <strong>Utzon</strong> Network - to continue after the<br />
retreat. <strong>The</strong> network will provide a platform for continuing discussions with<br />
your peers and further knowledge and inspiration sharing. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Utzon</strong> network<br />
will be initiated during the retreat, where your needs, wishes and requirements<br />
will be discussed and the network planned accordingly.
WHEN<br />
Arrival Saturday afternoon September 24th 2016 – departure Thursday 29th 2016<br />
in the afternoon. This way you will have the possibility of rounding of the week with<br />
one day at the office or spending a long weekend in Mallorca.<br />

HOW MUCH<br />
4.700 Euro ex vat. This includes the retreat, course material, kick-off meeting,<br />
5 nights at hotel, and all meals. Flights and travel insurance is not included.<br />

sooner the better. You will then receive the list of participants and a case template for you to fill out and return to us.<br />
We will design the specific content of the programme based on your cases. Later you will receive the course-material<br />
and the invitation to the kick-off meeting, which will take place in August.

Kjetil Trædal Thorsen leads the architecture, landscape, interiors, and brand<br />
design office; Snøhetta in Oslo, Norway.<br />
Along with co-founding principal Craig Dykers, the studio has completed a<br />
diverse range of international projects, including the Bibliotheca Alexandrina,<br />
Norwegian opera and ballet, and National September 11 Memorial Museum.<br />
Kjetil Trædal Thorsen co-founded the multidisciplinary architectural practice,<br />
Snøhetta in 1987. Since the creation, Kjetil has been instrumental in the projects<br />
developed by the practice. Both with Snøhetta and individually he has received<br />
numerous prizes including amongst others:<br />
Mies van de Rohe Prize – for the Opera and Ballet in Oslo in 2009<br />
Aga Khan Award for Architecture –for the Alexandria Library in 2004<br />
Commander of <strong>The</strong> Royal Norwegian Order of St.Olav in 2008<br />
International Fellowship Honor from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)<br />
Anders Byriel is CEO of the family owned textile company Kvadrat which is<br />
involved in 3.000 building projects per year around the world. Kvadrat is also<br />
servicing more or less all major furniture manufacturing brands with upholstery<br />
textiles. New non-core clients are Jil Sander and BMW. During Anders Byriel’s<br />
leadership Kvadrat have grown from Euro 19 mill. to Euro 96 mill. in revenue.<br />
<strong>The</strong> company has gone from 2 to 24 incorporated companies and is now among<br />
the two strongest companies in the world in its industry.<br />
Anders Byriel serves as vice chairman of RETHINK 2017 Aarhus European Capital<br />
of Culture. He is also a member of the board of JP/Politikens Hus and a member<br />
of the board of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture,<br />
Design and Conservation – School of Architecture.<br />
Anders recently received the prestigious Owner / CEO Of the Year Award 2015<br />
by PricewaterhouseCoopers in Denmark and is involved in teaching at Harvard<br />
Business School, where Kvadrat is taught as a case.

Paul W. Nakazawa works internationally as a consultant and adviser to private and public<br />
companies, institutions, and governments. He previously served as managing principal to<br />
multi-disciplinary design practices in New York, Chicago, Boston, and Charlotte. He was a<br />
founding member of AMO, the research and development arm of the Office for Metropolitan<br />
Architecture. He currently serves as the Chairman of Snohetta’s Advisory Board, New York,<br />
and a director of MASS Design Group, Boston.<br />
Nakazawa has adviced several architectural companies worldwide on management and<br />
business development. This includes established companies as well as start-ups.<br />
Nakazawa received his BA and MBA degrees from the University of Chicago, and Master<br />
in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He has taught and lectured<br />
at the GSD, Southern California Institute of Architecture (Los Angeles), Architectural<br />
Association (London), Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico City), and University of North<br />
Carolina at Charlotte.<br />

Luke Fox is head of studio 3 of Fosters and partners, leading a team of designers<br />
in London and Hong Kong, with a wide range of international projects. He studied<br />
architecture at the University of Sydney and after graduating worked in New York<br />
with Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, where he became a member of the American<br />
Institute of Architects (New York Chapter). He joined Foster + Partners in 1998<br />
working initially on the design of the HSBC Headquarters at Canary Wharf. He<br />
subsequently oversaw the construction of Tower Place in London, where he ran<br />
the site office until the project’s completion.<br />

WHAT TO CONSIDER IN REORGANISATION<br />
AND SUCCESSION PLANNING<br />
Carsten Fode handles all aspects of company law in relation to limited liability<br />
companies, as well as partnerships, general commercial law matters, trusts and<br />
foundations. He also advises clients on reorganisation and succession planning.<br />
Carsten has many years’ experience as a board member of both owner-managed<br />
businesses and listed companies. He is on the board of several foundations and<br />
chairman of the Aros, Aarhus Art Museum.<br />
In 2003 he moved to Beijing for the design and construction of the world’s largest<br />
and most advanced terminal building at Beijing International Airport.<br />
On returning to London he worked on Russia Tower, the highest tower in Europe.<br />
He was promoted to partner in 2006 and to senior partner in 2009.<br />
He teaches succession planning at Aarhus University.

BRANDING AND SELFAWARENESS<br />
Søren Høy is a writer, director and producer of visual production. He has<br />
20 years experience from the film and TV business as TV host, conceptualist<br />
and documentarist. He was Director of the European Film College for 3 years.<br />
He advises companies on communication strategies and visual expressions,<br />
including clients such as Danske Bank, IBM and several architectural companies.<br />
He is founder and co-manager of artFREQ, an organisation curating and presenting<br />
radical high culture, and chairman of kulturERhverv, a danish organisation bringing<br />
culture and business together for creative growth.

Peter is an expert in business- and concept development, and internationalisation<br />
of creative businesses. He has 15 years of experience from the<br />
Trade Council; Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. He was Consular General<br />
of the Royal Danish Consulate General in Canada.<br />
Susanne is a specialist in strategy- and business development. She has over 25<br />
years of leadership experience from the service industry; 20 years as part of the<br />
management of Rambøll Management, and 3 years as CEO of C.F. Møller. She is<br />
now CEO and partner at Werksted.<br />
In 2011 he founded the company Volcano Concepts Aps with focus on creative<br />
businesses. Today the company is run together with Susanne Toftgård Nielsen<br />
and is called WERKSTED ApS.<br />
He has been responsible for numerous workshops, events, and export promotion<br />
activities and has consulted more than 300 companies. He is the founder of the<br />
architecture festival Rising. Peter has teaching and facilitation experience from<br />

She is a columnist at Finans.dk where she writes about leadership and (work-) life.<br />
Susanne is a board member of a number of companies in the creative industry.<br />
Susanne is deputy chairman of the cultural institution Godsbanen in Aarhus,<br />
and member of the board of Dansk Bygningsarv. Susanne has teaching and<br />
