Charminar w<strong>as</strong> built by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591. After shifting h<strong>is</strong> capital from Golkonda<br />

to <strong>Hyderabad</strong>. It <strong>is</strong> re<strong>co</strong>gnized in <strong>as</strong> a global i<strong>co</strong>n <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>city</strong>. It <strong>is</strong> situated on <strong>the</strong> e<strong>as</strong>t bank <strong>of</strong> Musi River.<br />

It lies to Laad bazaar and to <strong>the</strong> southwest lies <strong>the</strong> richly ornamented granite Makkah M<strong>as</strong>jid. It <strong>is</strong> built<br />

<strong>as</strong> a centerpiece <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>city</strong>; <strong>the</strong> <strong>city</strong> <strong>is</strong> spread around <strong>the</strong> Charminar <strong>as</strong> quadrants and chambers,<br />

segregated ac<strong>co</strong>rding to <strong>the</strong> embell<strong>is</strong>hment settlements.<br />

Next <strong>is</strong> Golkonda fort, it <strong>is</strong> a sou<strong>the</strong>rn India fort and it w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> medieval sultanate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Qutb Shahi dyn<strong>as</strong>ty, situated 11 kilometers west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>city</strong>. Th<strong>is</strong> region <strong>is</strong> <strong>known</strong> for <strong>the</strong> mines that have<br />

produced some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> precious and most famous gems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, including Kohinoor, <strong>the</strong> Hope<br />

diamond, and <strong>the</strong> N<strong>as</strong>sak diamond.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> w<strong>as</strong> first built by <strong>the</strong> Kaktiya dyn<strong>as</strong>ty. The <strong>city</strong> and fortress are built on a granite hill over <strong>the</strong> height<br />

times by <strong>the</strong> different rulers, and it w<strong>as</strong> finally falling into ruins after a siege to <strong>the</strong> Mughal Empire under<br />

still mounted with cannons), eight gateways, and four drawbridges, with a number <strong>of</strong> royal apartments<br />

and halls, temples, mosques, magazines, stables, etc. inside. The lowest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> outermost<br />

enclosure into which we enter by <strong>the</strong> Fateh Darwaza (Victory gate, so called after Auragzes<br />

triumphant army marched in through th<strong>is</strong> gate) studded with giant iron spikes (to prevent elephants<br />

from battering <strong>the</strong>m down) near <strong>the</strong> south-e<strong>as</strong>tern <strong>co</strong>rner. At Fateh Darwaza can be experienced a<br />

fant<strong>as</strong>tic a<strong>co</strong>ustic effect, character<strong>is</strong>tic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> engineering marvels at Golkonda. A hand clap at a certain<br />

point below <strong>the</strong> dome at <strong>the</strong> entrance reverberates and can be heard clearly at <strong>the</strong> Bala H<strong>is</strong>ar pavilion,<br />

<strong>the</strong> highest point almost a kilometer away. Th<strong>is</strong> worked <strong>as</strong> a warning note to <strong>the</strong> royals in c<strong>as</strong>e <strong>of</strong> an<br />

attack.<br />

Qutb Shahi tos <strong>is</strong> situated in Ibrahim Bagh and one kilometer apart from Golkonda Fort. The<br />

galleries <strong>of</strong> smaller tombs are <strong>of</strong> a single storey tomb while <strong>the</strong> larger ones are two storied. The tombs<br />

are domed structure built on a square b<strong>as</strong>e surrounded by pointed arches. A d<strong>is</strong>tinctive style, which<br />

blends Persian, P<strong>as</strong>htun and Hindu forms. The tombs are structures with intricately carved stonework<br />

and are surrounded by landscaped gardens.


Taramati Baradari <strong>is</strong> a h<strong>is</strong>torical sarai and a part <strong>of</strong> Ibrahim Bagh, a Persian style garden built during<br />

<strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah. The Baradari w<strong>as</strong> <strong>co</strong>nstructed on <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Musi River.<br />

Abdullah Qutb Shah, who <strong>as</strong> an elegy to h<strong>is</strong> favourite <strong>co</strong>urtesan, Taramati, <strong>is</strong> said to have named <strong>the</strong><br />

sarai Taramati Baradari.<br />

local food which you will not find anywhere else.<br />

<strong>Hyderabad</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>known</strong> <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nizam City because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Niz<strong>as</strong> rule. But it <strong>is</strong> also <strong>known</strong> <strong>as</strong> City <strong>of</strong><br />

Pearl because <strong>of</strong> trading in pearl and diamonds, many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> itys traditional bazaars, including Laad<br />

Bazaar, Begum Bazaar and Sultan Bazaar, have remained open for centuries. Dot forget to buy pearl or<br />

diamond from <strong>the</strong> <strong>city</strong>; <strong>the</strong>se are original diamond and pearl. It will be <strong>the</strong> most precious shopping<br />

when you will v<strong>is</strong>it to <strong>Hyderabad</strong>.
