The Challenge Cup, which
culminates at Wembley
each year, threw up some
wonderful games last
weekend – and a shock
result not seen since the
Winter era.
Pride of place belongs to
Oldham who won at full-time
Hull Kingston Rovers. A quite
remarkable achievement for
the famous, though currently
part-time, Roughyeds. It
must be remembered also
that the Robins went all the
way to the final last August.
Sky Sports then showed
the superb West Riding
derby between Batley and
Featherstone Rovers and
what a treat this was for the
fans and viewers. Known
since Victorian times as ‘The
Gallant Youths’ Batley won
the first ever competition in
1897. After a titanic struggle
they triumphed over ‘Fev’.
Batley still play at their
revered old venue and how
splendid it looked - all spick
and span, painted in club
colours and maintained with
loving care.
The continued development
of the sport throughout the
globe is so important but
we must never lose sight of
our roots and heritage. York
City Knights also performed
well against higher
ranked opposition but the
Minstermen fell just short.
Conversely Toulouse
Olympique XIII again showed
everyone that they mean
business with a stunning
10-8 success on French
soil against Super League
promotion favourites, Leigh.
These are exciting yet
turbulent times in the land
of treize with the Catalans of
Perpignan sitting atop Super
League but with growing
unrest amongst French clubs
and revolution in the offing.
Indeed, this is being led
by former international
and Carcassonnais,
Marc Palanques. He and
others are pushing for the
Presidential elections to be
brought forward and the
ousting of the man with

It really is time, too, for the
French national team to
return to the great days
of yesteryear when many
thousands lined the streets
of Marseille to welcome
