Being in the thick beech
and oak forest, breathing
the fresh air deeply, feeling
the benefits of the Djerdap
climate, being enchanted by
the view that stretches from the
rocky peaks, listening to the silence
of primeval and pristine
nature of the Danube waves’
force – the privilege you have
at Djerdap, a place which will
not leave you indifferent. Here
at Djerdap, you cannot help but
feel awe before the forces of
nature at the point where the
Danube River carved its deepest
canyon, and Djerdap Kazani, due
to their sharp underwater rocks,
prior to the formation of Accumulation
Lake was a nightmare
for the captains on the Danube.
Life had existed since the time
immemorial on the coast of one
of Europe’s largest rivers and the
ancient cultures that had been
here before the Romans and it
had left the evidence of their existence.
Numerous legends and
incredible stories appeared out
of its millennium continuance
and during the summer twilight,
in the distance, you might see Jason
and the Argonauts in search
of the Golden Fleece. Or the legionnaires
of Emperor Tiberius
and Trajan, carving the stone
path in the cliffs above the river
so that the slaves could drag the
galleys, perhaps even ancient
Lepenci sculpting their fish-like
deities in pebbles. Wherever
you look, there are seen and unseen
traces of almost all ages in
Djerdap - from pre-history to the
present time.
Although the Danube put its
deepest stamp into the nature of
Djerdap National Park by running
throughout its length, representing
the natural border between
Serbia and Romania, Djerdap National
Park is much more than the
recognizable gorge. Thick forests
that preserve diverse wildlife in
itself, numerous nature reserves,
a large number of mountaintops,
countless streams and rivers and
a significant number of caves give
a special charm and mystique to
the entire region.
No matter how many times
you were at Djerdap, with each
next visit you will discover something
new, hitherto unseen. And
as many times as you arrive to
Djerdap National Park, it will
still be a meeting with preserved
forests, clear streams, a powerful
and secretive Danube, reserves
and natural monuments, cultural
heritage, traditional values and
genuine hospitality of the local
inhabitants. With this Djerdap
National Park Tourist Guide, we
wish to awake your curiosity so
you could discover a place to rest,
recreate and have an unforgettable
adventure.
Therefore, welcome to Djerdap!
In the Celtic language, Danube
means a river, water. Legends
say that the third part of the
Danube, called Ishtar after the water
deity, the emperor of people,
runs form Achilles’ spring. The
father of history, Herodotus, was
sailing along the Danube which
was called Istros at the time. Historians
and poets wrote that Jason
and the Argonauts were sailing
along this river, too, searching
for the Golden Fleece. However,
no one recorded when the first
wave of the Pannonian Sea started
deepening the massives between
the Balkans and the Carpathians,
opening the Iron Gate and
thus creating the most secretive
place on the Danube, Djerdap today.
Persians named this miracle
of nature, which has captivated
throughout the millennia, Girdap
or whirlpool and Roman soldiers
and slaves, by an order of the emperor
Trajan, cut the road into the
stones of Djerdap which was strategically
and economically important
to the Roman Empire. Tabula
Traiana and Trajan’s bridge remain
to testify through centuries
about the great accomplishments
of Romans. Both visible and invisible
signs of centennial harmony
and struggle between the man and
the nature from the beginning
of the world to this day are present
in Djerdap. Hunter-gatherer
community, followed by the first
farmers and herders, left behind
a monumental sculpture of fishlike
deities at Lepenski Vir. Very
favourable conditions for life were
the reasons for the continuing
presence of man, as it is testified
by, apart from Lepenski Vir, many
archaeological findings and cultural
and historical monuments
and sites, such as Diana, Golubac
town, the remains of the Roman
limes, and various castles and preserved
examples of Slavic architecture.
Unique natural and cultural
heritage of the 63,608 acres
along hundred kilometres of the
Danube were put under the state
protection with the establishment
of Djerdap National Park in 1974.
It has it been confirmed many
times that the encounter with the
Iron Gate and intact nature of
Djerdap National Park, sumptuously
rich in its remarkable flora
and fauna specimens, strengthens
the mind, while exploration of the
largest archaeological museum in
nature in Europe rejuvenates the
spirit. Djerdap is also the amazing
gorge, an incredible view from
steep cliffs high up to 800 m above
the Danube, three large river valleys
and over a thousand caves
and corries located at a distance
of about 150 km. Here at Djerdap,
the Danube is the deepest, 90 m,
the narrowest, 140 m, but the widest
as well, nearly 7 km, near Golubac.
Djerdap keeps many secrets,
wonders of nature and values; it is
a paradise for adventurers, nature
lovers, fishermen and hunters. In
the Danube depths great examples
of perch and catfish are hidden,
in the thick forests game such as
NP DJERDAP
13

deer, roe deer, boar, and hare and
in inaccessible heights of clear sky
– eagles and falcons. Djerdap NP is
the largest habitat of lynx in Serbia,
which is very rare in Europe;
about 1100 plant species can be
found here, and the ones whose
abundance in Europe significantly
decreased are especially important:
the Common Hazel, the European
nettle tree, walnut, lilac, the
Downy Oak, Mouse Thorn, Rustyback,
Eurasian smoke tree, Holly.
Memories from Djerdap stay long
in your memory. These moments
are ‘enhanced’ by the unique traditional
specialties of this area,
served in the well-preserved natural
atmosphere or unusual warmth
of a rustic rural household. This
gives you a reason more to come
for your Djerdap adventure.
The History of Djerdap
Nowhere is the nature and
cultural heritage so uniquely intertwined
as it is here in Djerdap
gorge. The Danube has always bestowed
life upon the inhabitants of
its shores. You can feel the breath
of history in Djerdap National
Park while walking, learning how
the people have survived for thousands
of years at this border of historical
winds. Djerdap is a sort of a
time machine, because it takes you
to the eight-millennium-old Lepenski
Vir, the settlement of prehistoric
fishermen representing the
centre of one of the most complex
cultures from pre-history. The Romans
bridged the Danube, cut the
road through Djerdap gorge, and
Tabula Traiana and Diana palace
remained both trace and the witnesses
of the power and wealth of
the ancient Roman Empire. The
legend of the beautiful girl Golubana
still lives in the greatest Šeširkula
of Golubac fortress, whose
towers and walls are the everlasting
evidence of architectural skill
and knowledge of Serbian medieval
lords and builders.
As a trace of the past times,
40 registered immovable cultural
properties and four exceptionally
significant cultural monuments
– Golubac fortress, Lepenski Vir,
Tabula Traiana and Diana remain.
Sailing on the Danube
FROM ARGONAUTS TO THE DJERDAP SEA
The man has always turned to
rivers, lakes and seas, for food and
survival. Having carved tree trunks,
he got the first boat or plough land,
and perfected it later, using it for
fishing, transportation of food,
firewood and other necessities.
The Phoenicians were the first
to appear on the Danube in the
distant past, bringing the goods
from the East in their vessels. According
to the legend of the Argonauts’
quest, sailing on the Danube
existed seven thousand years ago.
Argonauts, in search of the Golden
Fleece, sailed into the river Istar,
as Ptolemy marked the river Danube
in the maps. Five thousand
years ago the Greeks came to the
14 NP DJERDAP

Istros, another name for the Danube,
where they had their colonies,
in the lower Danube, on the
coast and on the Black sea. This is
when the history of the Danube
sailing begins.
Two millennia ago, the Romans
marked the Danube as Danubius,
and this name, at first used for the
upper Danube, was later extended
to the whole Danube. The first Roman
river boats were called ‘Trireme’,
and later on larger military
galleys were called ‘Galions’. Even
the Emperors Tiberius and Trajan
realized the difficulties of sailing
through Djerdap, due to reefs
and rocks, giving it the name Iron
Gate (Port de Fer). Along with the
road being cut through Djerdap,
they did the first breaking up of
the rocks. The Romans, for defence,
built castrums on: Lederata,
Pinkum, Kupae, Novae, Taliata,
Dierna, Cerna, Canes, and Egeta.
The Slavic tribes Antes, Nego
and Timacs have been present in
the Danube region since the 4 th
century, but the largest breakthrough
to the Balkans was done
two centuries later. Since 14 th
century there were Turks with a
strong fleet, more powerful than
the Austro-Hungarian. It is said
that Suleiman the Great, on his
conquest to Europe in 1526 had
the fleet of 800 vessels below Belgrade.
In those times, the trade
was in bloom on the Danube and
the Morava, and Serbs were acknowledged
sailors since they
knew the Danube’s ‘mood’. In
16 th century the Austro-Hungarian
ships were on the Danube, defending
the border. The shippers
were from the Slavic tribes along
the Danube.
The first Serbian ship-owners
were Prince Milos and ‘The Danube
Captain’ – Miša Anastasijević
from Poreč. They exported agricultural
products, and imported
salt. Miša Anastasijević, a great
Serbian benefactor and donor to
the education system, had 74 ships
and 23’kamarasi’(boats for carrying
goods) in 1850.
Underwater rocks and high water
velocity created great difficulties
in sailing through Djerdap,
especially after bigger vessels and
steam ships appeared on the Danube.
In the summer of 1834, the
first steam ship of the Viennese
company (DDSG) passed through
Djerdap. The most extensive works
on Djerdap channelling, up to Sip
dam, were conducted by Austro-
Hungary in the period between
1889 and 1896.
Djerdap river administration
in Tekija and Oršava was in charge
of the safety of sailing. Channel
was particularly marked and they
sailed only during the day, and the
ships were necessarily conducted
by the skilled and trained people
through the Djerdap straits, ‘locs’
or pilots. Pilots came aboard at
the final stations of Vince, Kožica,
Ključ and Kladovo, Kostol on the
right and Moldava, Drenkovi and
Turn Severin on the left bank of
the Danube. The ship pilots or
locs, the ship conductors, knew
Djerdap ’as the back of their hand’
and those were usually the people
from Donji Milanovac and Tekija.
Nowadays, the Danube is a
part of trans-European river system
Rhine-Maine-Danube 3,505
long, and the flow of Danube
within our country is 588 km.
Golubac Fortress
At the very entrance into Djerdap
gorge, four kilometres downstream
from Golubac, there is
Golubac fortress. Nobody knows
for sure who built Golubac fortress
and when – whether it was
Serbs, Byzantines or Hungarians.
The name Golubac city, according
to the data available, was first
mentioned in Hungarian charters
in 1335, while in Turkish
written sources it first appeared
in 1390. It is assumed that the
city was held by Serbs at the time
of Kosovo battle, and afterwards,
it was conquered by Bayezid I, in
the late 17 th and early 18 th century
it was ruled by the Austrians
and until 1867 was governed
by Turks.
Strategically extremely important,
it has an irregular base
and walls which follow the terrain
configuration. To ensure a
more efficient defence, the town
was internally divided into several
parts - nine massive towers
were interconnected by the wall
with separated walking path thus
being organized to defend the
city, from both the land and the
river. On the upper part of the
fortress which used to be a citadel
are three towers connected by
walls, and the main tower was on
the citadel, as well as probably a
granary and water tank. On the
lower part, on the Danube bank,
there are remnants of a magnificent
two-storey palace from the
first half of the 15th century, accompanied
by a six-storey tower
used for defence and dwelling.
Included in the outer fortress,
there was a gate with a wooden
bridge across the water trench
and two towers. The coastal part
of the fortress had a port where
Turks built a low round cannon
tower. During the 1930s a regional
road was built through Golubac
fortress and the entrance gate
was torn down, without a previously
prepared documentation.
Archaeological research, restoration
and conservation were
performed systematically during
1970s and 1980s, and then they
stopped. After the expected revitalization
of Golubac fortress,
this monument of exceptional
significance will shine in its full
splendour.
Lepenski Vir
On the Danube terrace in Djerdap,
there is Lepenski Vir, one of
the most significant archaeological
sites of Serbia. During the archaeological
excavations in the 1960s
the sacral architecture and a monumental
sculpture were discovered,
tentatively dated to the period
of 6500 BC to 4500 BC, which
changed the world’s ideas about
the beginnings of the civilization.
Beneath the settlements of the
first farmers and herders from
the period between 5,300 BC and
4,500 BC, seven successively built
settlements of hunters, fishermen
and food gatherers erected on
each other were discovered. Excavated
artefacts, numerous habitats,
tombs reflecting unusual
funeral rituals, various tools and
jewellery made of stone, horns and
bones, monumental sandsto ne
scul ptures, as well as tiles with
carved signs resembling letters,
indicated that the original hunter
- gatherer communities inhabiti
ng the terrace near Lepenski
Vir, established complex social
re lationships, established architecture
of a distinctive style and
modelled a monumental sculpture
of enormous pebbles.
All habitat settlements (archaeological
research discovered 136
objects) have a form of truncated
circular snippet at the angle of 60
degrees. Construction of the settlements
was planned, and their harmonious
forms and functionality
display a developed sense for architecture.
Original architectural
solutions and monumental sculpture
put the culture of Lepenski
Vir in a special and early phase of
prehistoric culture in Europe.
Tabula Traiana
It is a part of the ensemble of
Roman monuments on the Roman
road through Djerdap dedicated
to the completion of works
on two great architectural projects
in Djerdap - the road through
Djerdap and construction of Roman
Channel in the vicinity of
today’s Hydroelectric power plant
“Djerdap 1”. It is carved in a rock,
rectangular in form with the text
in Latin dedicated to the Roman
Emperor Trajan.
“Emperor Nerva son of the
divine Nerva, Nerva Trajan, the
Augustus, Germanicus, Pontifex
Maximus, invested for the fourth
time as Tribune, Father of the
Fatherland, Consul for the third
time, excavating mountain rocks
and using wood beams has made
this road.”
It was first set at 1.5 m height
above the Roman road along the
Danube. It is assumed, according
to the inscription, that Trajan
built a part of the Djerdap road in
the Low gorge while preparing for
the war against Dacians, so that
in year 100 the last, hardest part
was finished. The construction of
the Roman road and a large number
of forts show the importance
of Djerdap to Roman Empire, until
the final conquest of Dakia in
the beginning of 2 nd century. The
construction of the road, stretching
along the Danube, was determined
by the needs for a faster
and safer sailing. The inscription
on the board was engraved in six
rows, but today only three are
legible. From its rich relief decoration,
only the friezes representing
an eagle and figures of winged
geniuses have been preserved.
NP DJERDAP
21

Beneath the inscription there is a
kneeling figure, supposedly Danubius,
and above it is a canopy with
a coffered ceiling.
With the formation of Djerdap
water accumulation, the Roman
road was flooded. The board,
along with the part of the road,
was cut and vertically elevated by
25 m in order to be protected from
rising of the Danube level which
occurred after the construction
of Hydroelectric power plant
‘Djerdap 1’.
Diana
One of the biggest and bestpreserved
Roman forts – castrum
on the Danube was built from
the ashlar stone, probably in year
100-101, at the time of Emperor
Trajan, at the same time with
the channel construction when a
safer sailing on the Danube was
achieved. At its time, Diana was
the most significant fort on the
Upper Moesian limes, as it was
erected on a strategically important
location and a constant
military unit had the task to
guard the border and secure the
downstream entrance into the
channel.
Diana is a rectangular castrum
whose dimensions are 100 by 200
m and has inwardly drawn towers
on the walls. Diana got its final
appearance by adding the walls
with protruded towers that spread
towards the Danube, closing and
protecting a part of the bank, in
the late 3 rd and early 4 th century.
In the mid-5 th century this Roman
castrum was destroyed by
the Huns, but it was renewed by
Emperor Justinian in 530.
In the interior of the fort, apart
from the remains of the walls with
gates and towers, military barracks
and other facilities were found,
and above the walls, the existence
of a smaller settlement, shrine and
necropolis was confirmed. Marble
and bronze sculptures, various
items for everyday use which were
found on Diana, show that this Roman
fort, besides its fortification
importance was a significant economic
centre with a port.
Djerdap Gorge
By its beauty and size, Djerdap
gorge (in many European languages
known as the Iron Gate)
is unparalleled in Europe. It was
formed many hundreds of thousands
of years ago, by splitting
the Carpathian mountain range
so the Pannonian Sea filled the
fault. The sea disappeared, and today
the Danube flows through the
canyon which is 130 km long.
Djerdap gorge is the biggest
breakthrough in Europe, consisting
of four gorges and three valleys.
Doubtless, the most beautiful
gorge is Veliki Kazan, whose
vertical sides rise up to 300 m abo-
ve the Danube and it was confirmed
that many eddies reach
up to 90 m in depth. From Veliki
Kazan, the way leads into
Mali Kazan, which is 300 m wide
and surrounded by steep cliffs.
It ends at 966 th km of the Danube,
called Hajdučka vodenica,
and this place seems like an oasis
among the stony boulders, the
reason why sailors choose it for
anchoring.
Tabula Traiana is at 965 th km
of the Danube in Djerdap gorge
and is dedicated to the great construction
project of the time – finishing
the Roman road through
Djerdap. Trajan’s Bridge is also
connected to Trajan.
NP DJERDAP
23

Trajan’s Bridge
A magnificent building on the
Danube connected Upper Moesia
and Dakia, today Serbia and
Romania, during the Roman Empire.
It was located in the vicinity
of village Kostol near Kladovo,
on Serbian and Turn Severin, on
Romanian side of the Danube. It
was built by an order of Emperor
Mark Ulpio Nerva Traiana and officially
opened in year 105 during
the second campaign of Trajan to
Dacians.
Trajan’s Bridge, which is one
of the most important works of
Roman construction building, was
designed by the greatest architect
of the time, Appolodorus of
Damascus. It was made of stone,
1,097.5 m long, with arches high
above the water; it had 20 columns
and portals at the access
and at both Danube banks. The
column dimensions are about
18-19 by 33-34 m. Column foundations
and portals were built
from a very hard cement made
from gravel pressed into plaster ,
above it were rows of bricks, the
columns had the core of plaster,
planked with the ashlars and
bricks. Only two years were needed
(from 103 to105) for Trajan’s
bridge to be built; it is also the
first bridge built on the lower
Danube, which was 800 m wide at
that spot. The historians say that
this magnificent building was the
longest bridge in the world for the
following thousand years.
When the Romans, invaded by
barbaric tribes, had to leave their
province, Dakia, the bridge was
destroyed, by the order of Emperor
Aurelian. However, other
sources claim that it was pulled
down 20 years after being built
by the order of Emperor Hadrian,
while there are other opinions
that it broke into pieces under the
water impact. The remains of the
first columns can be seen even today
on both, the Serbian and Romanian
side.
Tourism in boots
The area of North-eastern Serbia,
where Djerdap National Park
stretches at 63,608 ha, has always
been well-known for the
abundance and extreme variety
of animals of which there is evidence
in records of many travel
writers who cruised around this
region during the past centuries.
The variety of game is present to
this day, so that centennial oak
and beech forests of Djerdap National
deer, buck, boars, badgers, martens,
hares, wild pigeons, doves,
while mountain goats, eagles and
falcons adorn the rocky cliffs of
Djerdap Kazan.
Bear and lynx still wander the
wood vastness of Djerdap National
foxes and wild cats are numerous.
The vast Djerdap Lake is inhabited
by many various swamp
birds, while the neighbouring
cultivated fields provide all necessary
conditions for the successful
breeding of small game
(partridge, pheasant, and hare).
The abundance and variety of
hunting fauna, the quality of trophies
and most of all, completely
natural behaviour of game give
an unforgettable sport and hunting
experience in an extremely
well-preserved natural space of
great caution of game caused by
their completely natural behaviour,
hunting in Djerdap National
a true primeval experience, demanding
the hunter to be physically
prepared, extremely patient
as well as highly knowledgeable
about life habits of game.
Fisherman’s Paradise
Catfish, perch, pike, asp, bream,
carp, etc. are a part of fish world
in Djerdap National Park, and long-time
hydro-biological research
in the region of Djerdap National
richness of the Danube wildlife.
The diversity and abundance of
Djerdap National Park ichthyofauna
is reflected in about 50 resident
fish species.
In the region of Djerdap National
Park, fishing is allowed on
the right bank of the Danube to
the state border, from Golubac
city to Golul Island. Recreational
fishing is done with the hooks,
and the maximum of three rods
with two hooks on each. The fishing
is allowed on the fishing water
bank pre-set for recreational fishing,
during the day and night. The
use of boat for recreational fishing
is permitted on the Danube.
In Poreč bay, the use of boats is
allowed for recreational fishing
except during the spawning period
of most significant fish species
(from 1 st February to 15 th
June). The recreational fishing is
prohibited, due to safety reasons,
with the regulations and for
the protection of fish stocks,
the daily catch is limited for
all categories of recreational
fishermen in weight and
pieces as follows:
recreational fisherman
can catch a daily maximum
of 5 kg of indigenous fish
species;
catfish, perch, carp, pike,
sturgeon, burbot, all types of
trout, grayling and asp (three
pieces per day in sum)
pomfret, ide, carp, barbell,
chub and bream (10
pieces a day in sum).
When the weight of the
caught specimen exceeds 5
kg, the daily catch limit in
pieces is not applied, but in
such cases it is considered
that the daily catch limit
of a recreational fisherman
is reached. The fish caught
during the closed season
as well as specimens whose
length is less than required,
must be immediately returned
into the fishing water
with as little damage as
possible. Recreational fishermen
need to possess a
valid annual permit for recreational
fishing.
Viewpoints
When you are in Djerdap National
Park, under no circumstances
should you miss to visit
local viewpoints.
Sokolovac is the most prominent
peak in the Danube gorge
Gospodjin Vir, rising 625 m above
the sea level. It stretches between
the Kožička River and the Pesača.
The highest points of Sokolovac
form a flat plateau of tens of hectares
of meadows, surrounded by
deciduous forest. In the beginning
of spring, Sokolovac is covered with
flowers. Sokolovac can be reached
from Bosman by the hiking trail,
and the whole gorge Gospodjin Vir,
from Bosman to Greben, can be
seen from this viewpoint.
Greben is, as Jovan Žujović
pointed out at the occasion of the
International Geological Congress
in Budapest in 1900, the most
beautiful hill on the Balkans. Its
beauty is neither in its altitude,
which is not so great and is 119
m, nor in its vegetation, but in the
formations that have developed
there. It is at the end of Boljetinsko
brdo, along the Danube
bank, whose beauty the Danube
itself has revealed. Greben can be
reached by the hiking trail over
Boljetinsko brdo.
Kovilovo, the roof of the world,
at altitude of 358 m, is also called
Golo brdo by the local people. Kovilovo,
which gives a magnificent
view of Donjomilanovačka valley,
over 25 km long from Greben, to
Golubinje, can be reached by a
hiking trail initially leading down
the asphalted road Donji Milanovac
– Majdanpek via Oman, and
afterwards down the forest road
to Golo brdo.
Mali Štrbac (626 m) is long remembered
because the forces
of nature in Djerdap gorge can
be seen at work. Veliki and Mali
Štrbac, apart from being the
highest peaks of Miroč, are also
very attractive viewpoints, providing
spectacular view of the
Danube at its narrowest part,
above the dramatic gorge Kazan.
Unlike the most part of Miroč,
which is dominated by the forms
of plateau, the reef where there
are Veliki and Mali Štrbac is a
karst formation of exposed rocks,
which have several hundred meters
of rocky sections toward the
Danube, perfect for alpinism. On
the other hand, this area is covered
with some of the richest,
and given the number of plant
species, most diverse forests, so it
is no surprise that the area of Veliki
and Mali Štrbac is under the
first degree of protection within
Djerdap National Park. The ascent
to these two peaks is always
exquisite, with alternating inspiring
views from the rocks, meadows
and forest paths, where encounters
with roebuck and other
forest residents are not uncommon.
There are various routes
that can get you to Mali or Veliki
Štrbac; they can also be accessed
by the most famous marked hiking
trail, via Ploče.
Golubac
THE DANUBE’S WIDEST SMILE

At 1042 nd km of the Danube,
at the very entrance
to Djerdap, in the region
of Kučajske Mountains in northeastern
Serbia, there is Golubac.
An important feature of its geographical
position is its location
on the border of two geo areas:
plain – the rim of Pannonian basin
and the Carpathian mountain system.
A convenient geographical
position of Golubac has attracted
many conquerors. In the period
of Roman conquests, the Danube
was a stable natural defence wall.
In order to keep this function of
the Danube in the future, the Romans
also erected fortifications
protecting the northern borders
of the Empire. On the hill, four
kilometres upstream from the
medieval town of Golubac, there
are some remains of castle – more
famous as Vicus Cuppae, from
the first century A.D, which is believed
to have been, administratively,
a part of Viminacium. The
region around Golubac was long
in crossfire between Byzantine,
Serbs, Bulgarians and Hungarians.
The peace came when these
regions went under Serbian ruling
during the reign of king Dragutin
(in 1291). In those turbulent, war
times the medieval town of Golubac
was founded.
Golubac was first mentioned
as a fortress with a Hungarian
military formation in 1335. It is
assumed that the town was ruled
by Serbs at the time of Kosovo
battle, and after the battle it was
taken by Bayezid I. The town
was ruled by Serbs again around
1410, during the reign of Stefan
Lazarević. After Stefan’s death,
changes occurred. Despot Stefan
Lazarević was obliged to return
40 GOLUBAC

Mačva, Belgrade and Golubac to
Hungary since he did not have an
heir to the throne. At the time of
Stefan’s death, Hungarian king
Sigismund came to Serbia to
overtake the territories according
to the contract. Stefan Lazarević
had previously given Golubac to
Duke Jeremija as a pledge for the
loan of 12,000 gold coins. To the
request of Sigismund to surrender
the town, the mayor Jeremija
asked for the previous payment
of 12,000 gold coins he had given
for the town. Since Sigismund
did not want to pay, Jeremija
surrendered the town to Turks
without a fight. Golubac was under
Turkish rule until 1867 with
shorter breaks.
Interesting legends are related
to the name Golubac. One of
them is that a beautiful princess
Golubana lived on the court, and
she refused the love of a Turkish
pasha, so she was nailed to the
Danube rock to die. With pasha’s
shouts: ‘Baba, repent (‘Babo, pokaj
se!’ in Serbian), the rock was
given the name Babakaj and the
town Golubac, after Golubana.
According to another legend,
Byzantine princess Jerina, Despot
Djuradj’s wife, bred a lot of
pigeons on the fortress, hence the
name Golubac (golub is pigeon
in Serbian). According to some
other story, the towers of the fortress
resemble pigeons on a cliff.
Then, Šešir – kula was erected so
that pigeons carrying mail would
take off and land easier, and then
wild pigeons inhabited the cliffs.
Anyway, ‘pigeon’ (golub) is even
today in the basis of the town’s
name and not only in Serbian,
but also in German, Hungarian,
Turkish and other languages.
Monastery Tumane
Only 9 km from Golubac,
in the beautiful environment
of pure and
unspoiled nature, where
only the Tumanska River
spoils the peace and quiet,
Tumane monastery lies.
It was built in XIV century,
right before Kosovo
battle and it is dedicated
to Archangel Gabriel. It is
an endowment of Miloš
Obilić, built in Serbian-
Byzantium style. The
monastery was burnt and
destroyed in the First and
Second Serbian Uprising,
and restored at the time of
Prince Miloš Obrenović.
It was secretly mined in
1910, torn down to foundations
and rebuilt in 1924, and in 1993
it was completely renovated and
painted. Tumane monastery is a
women’s monastery and it keeps,
apart from St Zosim’s relics, miraculous
Holy Russian icon.
The surrounding of Tumane
monastery is an area of exquisite
natural beauty, and a special feature
of this natural monument
is also tufa accumulation. In the
tufa itself there is an old beechoak
forest and a traditional tap
where the gifts are brought to the
souls of the deceased.
Zosim Sinajit Hermitage
This is the cave near the monastery,
deep in the forest, where
Zosim lived his ascetic life, dedicated
to God. In the 1950s, the
cave was turned into a chapel,
when the spiritualist Pahomije
decided to lead a solitary life.
Near the hermitage is the spring
which is believed to have miraculously
healing characteristics.
Donji Milanovac

In Donjomilanovačka valley,
on the Danube’s 990 th km,
since 1971, after the building
of hydroelectric power plant
’Djerdap 1’ and elevation of the
Danube’s level which flooded the
old settlement, the settlement
of Donji Milanovac is located.
This picturesque Danubian town
has changed its location several
times throughout its long history.
In the ancient times, an important
military camp and settlement,
called Taliata, was located
at Veliki Gradac place, but at the
time of Turks it was further developed
as Poreč and it was an
important town on the Danube
Ada during the First Serbian Uprising.
Due to frequent floods,
by Miloš Obrenović’s Decree in
1832, Poreč was moved eight kilometres
downstream, along the
Danube’s right bank and was given
the name of Milanovac, after
Milan, Miloš Obrenović’s eldest
son. Milanovac was built according
to the first regulation plan in
Serbia, according to the sketches
of Stefan Stefanović Tenka, the
Duke in Poreč and president
of the State Council, and it has
borne the name Donji Milanovac
since 1859. It used to be the
centre of Porečko-rečki county
and Donji Milanovac Municipality
until 1965. This region is believed
to be the cradle of ancient
Europe because of the values of
archaeological sites Lepenski Vir
and Rudna Glava nearby.
Nowadays Donji Milanovac is
the place with significant touristic
potentials not only due to
its natural richness of Djerdap
National Park, in whose centre
it is located, but also its cultural
heritage and convenient weather
conditions. The hotel ’Lepenski
Vir’ and the management of Public
Enterprise ’Djerdap National
Park’ is in Donji Milanovac.
It was built next to the dislocated
site Lepenski Vir, which is
significant world’s archaeological
site, 9000 years old. Lepenski
Vir Museum has been included
in The National Museum since
1978. In June 2011, at the spot
of the former building of the
Museum, a new, modern building
was opened, the Centre for
visitors – Lepenski Vir Museum.
In the new building, apart from
the site itself, which is the main
and central exhibit of the museum
and the presentation which
includes the copies of magnificent
sculptures from the site, it
is also possible to see the new
It presents the Mesolithic and
Neolithic era of the site Lepenski
Kladovo

Kladovo is considered to be
an older city in the Danube
area, and the origin of
the town is connected to the military-civil
camp built by the Romans
on the border, known by the
name Zanes. When the camp was
destroyed, the Slavs built their own
settlement Novi Grad (‘new town’)
on its foundations. On the building
of the Turkish fortress Fetislam,
Novi Grad loses its Slavic character
more and more. It is believed that
the name of the town stems from
the word kladenac, since Kladovo
is rich in springs or from the word
klada (log), from the cut forests, although
some think that these cuts
date later than the first times when
the name was mentioned in writing.
Anyway, Kladovo was mentioned
for the first time, under its
present name, in one Austrian military
document in which the attack
of Wallachian haiduks to the town
in 1596 was described. Among the
oldest and most valuable written
data is the description of the town
which Evliya Chalabi, a Turkish geographer
and travel writer, noted
while staying in Kladovo.
Kladovo has been popular as
a bohemian town since the old
times, the town where the old
and new are entwined. It has remained
in a written form, that
Serbian Prince, Miloš Obrenović,
enforcing the regulation about
urbanization of Kladovo by ‘engineering’,
defined that the ratio
of houses and kafanas (taverns)
which was ten to one, cannot be
disturbed in the town. The tradition
of the famous kafanas and
restaurants continues to this
day by many catering facilities,
especially in the old city centre,
which is the oasis of bohemia
and ‘good bite’. Kladovo is wellknown
and appreciated among
the epicures for the fish specialties
such as: small sturgeon
in ‘a gap’, ‘drunken’ carp, grilled
sturgeon, smoked carp, fish soup
or widely-known Kladovo caviar.
This area is also famous for the
delicious wine made of grapes
grown on quicksand, ‘The Danube
Soul’, a white wine manufactured
according to the French
technology, a real Kladovo brand.
exhibition space, there are about
400 representative exhibits of an
extreme historical importance
dating from prehistory to Middle
Ages.
It was founded in 1996, as
one of the most significant goals
in the field of the scientific and
research project Djerdap’s heritage
protection (1978/9-1998). In
its organization, it is a part of the
National Museum in Belgrade
and HP Djerdap Kladovo. The
exhibitions of the objects present
and interpret the millennium
continuity of inhabiting the Danube,
integrating the multicultural
this region even in 1735. Today’s
White wine
‘The Danube Soul’
’The Danube Soul’ (Espirit du
Danube) is a ’naked’ wine, completely
natural, without any artifi
cial ingredients. It is made of
the grape variety called Italian
Riesling (Rhine Riesling), and
French winemaking includes a
fine surface filtration and mild
stabilization so that most of fruit
aroma and freshness is preserved.
The characteristics of this wine
are nice light yellow and green
colour, delicate fruit aroma and
sour-sweet flavour. It is made
from Rhine Riesling grape variety,
which is crushed two hours after
the harvest, so that the fresh fruit
aroma is preserved. The grapes
are produced on the grafted vine
stock, which is a real rarity in the
world. The region where the vineyard
is located is on the first place
in Serbia by the number of sunny
days in a year, which is why the
grapes are distinguished by the
high fruit contents and optimal
ratio of acids. ’The Danube Soul’
is, before all, a refreshing and
play ful wine just like the river after
which it got its name.
The red wine
’The Balkans Soul’
The wine ’The Balkans Soul’ is
more than a subtle blend of grape
varieties: Prokupac, Vranac and
Cabernet. This wine is the expression
of the ground and climate
which produces it and with
its unique features speaks about
the characteristics of the regions
it originates from. Steep slopes
of karst geology in the vineyards
around Aleksandrovac and Rajac,
a relatively high altitude and
cold autumn nights contribute
to the slow riping of grapes. It
gi ves the wine the fruit flavour
and refreshing character. The
particular feature of the wine
is best described in the French
word ’terroir’, which expresses
the mixture of ground, climate
and human skill.
Waterfall -
spring Beg bunar
A legend says that a young
Turkish nobleman (’beg’), from
around Golubac fortress, suddenly
fell ill and became weak. Turkish
hecims, the doctors of that
time, recommended him, besides
other medicines, regular walks
along the gorge down the Danube.
On the first walk, tired and
weary, he stopped next to the waterfall
and drank some cold water.
His strength returned tomorrow
and after several days of drinking
that cold water from the spring,
he was completely healed, to his
joy and his harem’s. So the spring
and the waterfall got the names
by this Golubac ’beg’, Beg bunar.
According to another story,
the name of the spring came
from the periods of drought
when the quantity of water in the
spring is considerably smaller, it
almost dries out – water actually
runs away (beg – run away). The
name Beg bunar is given after the
running of the water.
The research conducted before
the Second World War determined
that a part of the spring
of the Pek river sinks deeply into
Homolja, into limestone crevices,
and through many kilometres
of underwater stone caves and
channels, cooled by the rocks
and enriched with minerals, the
water springs at this place.
Rajko’s Cave
The miraculous halls of Rajko
harambasa
Only a few kilometres from
Majdanpek centre, with the entrance
hidden by the tree tops,
there is Rajko’s cave. Jovan Cvijić,
our famous naturalist, discovered
it in the end of 19th century.
For what is known so far, the corridors
of Rajko’s cave are about
two kilometres long. Rajko’s
cave is one of the most interesting
caves in Serbia according to
speleological characteristics and
88 YOU SHOULD NOT MISS

morphogenetic evolution. It consists
of two levels, sinking and
spring. The lower is hydrologically
active, and the higher is the
dry level. Since it has the length
of 2.304 metres of explored
channels, it is the longest cave
in Serbia. Connecting the river
and dry channel a circular path
of 1410 m of length was made.
Tourists visit only some parts
of river and dry level. A narrow
concrete path leads through spacious
’Concert’ and ’Hedgehog’s’
halls, next to ’Small’ and ’Large
organs’, ’Hanged haiduk Rajko’
to ’The hall of Bathtubs’. The
temperature in the cave is +8 degrees
Celsius, while the relative
humidity is a hundred per cent.
The whole cave got the name
of Rajko harambasa after an innkeeper
of this name who is believed
to have served the guests
by day and robbed the caravans
with his bandits by night. The
legend says that he hid his treasure
in this very cave. Even if he
did, he did not manage to spend
it, because the authorities caught
and hanged him. As a memory
of him, there is a legend about a
hidden treasure to tickle our imagination
and the name of this
speleological beauty.
Apart from the legend, Rajko’s
cave is unique by its socalled
bathtubs. It is known for
holes similar to bathtubs in the
floor of the cave corridors which
are rarely seen elsewhere. One
whole corridor is in these bathtubs,
but it cannot be walked on,
so we can only catch a glimpse
of it. However, the experience is
not reduced by that. On entering
the cave, you will meet Sacrificial
Altar, the Ghosts, A bale of Hay,
Ćele kula. From Cvijić’s whirl,
you will emerge into Waterfall’s
Hall, see the Hall of Tombstone,
experience the Winter Fairy tale
and get to The Crystal Hall which
a perfectly suitable name for it.
Every step made on this narrow
concrete path brings a new, unforgettable,
unique, amazing experience.
Long after emerging
to daylight the sparkles of cave
jewellery made from the crystal
calcite remain in your eyes white
as an icy winter landscape.
Beli izvorac
At the 17 th kilometre from Majdanpek,
in the flow of the Šaška
River, there is a natural monument,
a tufa accumulation, included
in the Inventory of geo-heritage
objects of Serbia, owing to its
geomorphological values. It was
made under the spring of the same
name, which emerges from a short
cave at 360 metres of altitude. It
starts with a spacious balcony
made of tufa, at whose rim there is
a waterfall 16 metres high. Under
the waterfall, tufa accumulation
descends in cascades until 278 metres,
at the length of 290 metres.
The sinking of water through the
tufa, under the waterfall, made a
cave channel 13 metres long and
4 metres wide, open at both sides.
The sedimentation of tufa in the
cave made pure white stalactites.
Downstream from the waterfall,
in the bed of the stream,
there are many tufa partitions,
behind which tufa accumulation
lakes are formed, of up to 10 m
in diameter and 2-3 metres deep.
The stream flows down over the
partitions in the form of cascades
and smaller waterfalls, among
which there are two which are 5
metres high.
Blederijski Waterfall
As all magnificent sights, Blederijski
Waterfall is not easily seen
by a passenger, as it used to be
said, or today’s touristic nomads,
90 YOU SHOULD NOT MISS

who, in search of adventure, cruise
around Eastern Serbia. It is
eight kilometres far from Brza
Palanka, and about six kilometres
from the village Reka. The amazing
Blederijski Waterfall is on a
tufa which can be found at the
spring itself all the way to the
waterfall and is hard to notice
due to thick vegetation. However,
if you have a good guide, it is
not hard to reach this fairy-tale
sight. Roads and paths leading
to the wonderful waterfall and
interesting spring are easy, because,
apart from their length,
there is not a significant altitude
difference. At first you will hear
and then see Blederijski waterfall
which at first sight reminds of the
waterfall Zeleni Vir in Resavke
Lisine. Since Blederijski Waterfall
is bigger and stronger, so the
impressions become different.
Wa ter swoops down vertically,
from the height of about seven
metres, after flooding over tufa
bar, with a strong, perhaps even
intimidating roar, in the shape of
a water curtain into a tufa bathtub,
a big whirl or a small lake.
It is turquois green, except for
the periods of great rain or snow
melting. But even then, the eternal
play of water and stone has its
beauty. The already mentioned
tufa bar has the looks of an irregular
horseshoe, which makes way
to some smaller waterfalls flow
under it, so that apart from the
big waterfall, there is a smaller
one on the side, which disappears
during the summer since there
is less water in the river, but it is
there in spring, when the river is
rich in water.
The Museum in Majdanpek
The museum in Majdanpek was
founded in 1998 when the Department
of the Museum of Mining and
Metallurgy Bor, established in Majdanpek
in 1984, became independent.
The museum material of more
than 1000 objects was organized
into seven collections: ethnological,
archaeological, natural, historical,
photographic, art and numismatic.
The museum keeps the awards, prizes
and plaques of The Mining Museum
Majdanpek, as well as genealogies
and inscriptions of religious and
birth documentation of this area.
The mission of the Museum in Majdanpek
is research, refining, keeping
and exhibiting material, spiritual
and natural values of this area with
a special emphasis on archeo-metalurgy
and traditional customs of the
Wallachians. The Museum nourishes
the cultural identity of Majdanpek
Municipality as European home
of metal, and at the same time, the
most archaic customs and beliefs are
preserved at its territory. The Museum
in Majdanpek does not have its
permanent collection, but owing to
temporary exhibitions, usually from
the ethnological collection and guest
exhibitions, visitors can be acquainted
with the oldest customs in Europe,
Wallachian customs, as well as with
the cradle of mining – the oldest mine
in Europe, the Rudna Glava mine.
Majdanpek Museum is in 41,
MTS
At the moment when MT:S
was founded, one mobile operator
was already present at the
market of Serbia. In a very short
time, Telekom Serbia managed
to reach the place of the biggest
national operator in Serbia.
Telekom Serbia celebrated
its 10th birthday in 2007, and
more than 5 million people use
the services of Mobile Telephony
Serbia, which covers 98 per
cent of population and 92 per
cent of territory. MT:S today
has about 7 million networked
users in three countries in the
Balkans.
The vision of MT:S in the future
is to be the operator whose
customers are satisfied with
the services, brand, quality and
price. And so in 2005 MT:S decided
to ‘rebrand’, with a wish to
be recognizable in public by the
quality of services, lower prices,
customer relations, but also by
the leading role in introduction
of new technologies and services.
Since then, besides the new
brand, MT:S, with its slogan
‘You have friends’ promotes
new services and presents itself
as an operator whose priority
is customers’ satisfaction and
acceptance of new technologies
on the domestic market.
The slogan ‘You have friends’
during all these years it has
existed, MT:S has proved with
a huge number of customers,
quality of services and innovations
in mobile technology to
be keeping up with the world
trends. Djerdap National Park
is completely covered by MT:S
network signal. Electronic recharge
can be ob tained in any
well-stocked shop. Purchase of
mobile pho nes and SIM cards
is available in dealer shops in
Kladovo and Majdanpek.
