HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY IN INDIA : M. M. NINAN<br />

Today over 75% of the Meghalaya are Christians. The missions clearly distinguished between culture<br />

and religion and hence was able to sustain. Thus the traditional matrilinear inheritance and importance<br />

of women in social life were kept in tact while dealing with magic and witchcraft.<br />

To counter the impact of <strong>Christianity</strong> under the influence of Hinduism a new organization called Seng<br />

Khasi was formed under the leadership of a non-Christian Jeebon Roy Mairom in 1899<br />

Presbyterian, Anglican, and Roman Catholics form the major portions of the population with a very<br />

few Muslims. The state of Meghalaya is considered a strong Christian country that the Hindus are<br />

sending their missionaris as Meghalaya Hindu Mission in Mawkhar using education and health care.<br />

It all began when life-giving rains<br />

The barren un-yielding earth.<br />

In desperation the elders consulted<br />
