Truckload Carriers Association
Launches New Website,
Improves Access to Information
The Truckload Carriers Association
announced the launch of its new website with
upgraded functionality and a new, streamlined
design for easier access to content. While the
URL remains the same–www.truckload.org–
the association’s goal is to be the most useful
online resource for information about the issues
affecting truckload carriers.
“Our new website is portable and can be viewed
easily, whether you’re using a desktop, a laptop,
or a mobile device,” said Keith Tuttle, TCA’s
chairman, “and we’ve consolidated the content to
make it easier and more intuitive to use.”
Debbie Sparks, vice president of business
development, said, “Also, the popularity of our
social media channels inspired us to highlight
them on the site. A Twitter feed is now available so
visitors can see social media activity in real-time.”
The new website allows visitors to view key
information about ongoing issues involving
advocacy, education, events, membership, and
outreach via a new top navigation. Website
content is now organized to point visitors in the
right direction by highlighting current affairs
and important initiatives.
While the website has launched with this
new design and valuable information, there
will be additional features rolled out over the
coming months. For the latest details, follow
Millis Transfer Bridge Training
Program for Military Veterans
Millis Transfer Training Institute, as part of an
initiative underway by the National Governors
Association Center for Best Practices (NGA
Center), and in conjunction with the Veteran’s
Opportunity to Work to Hire Heroes Act of 2011
(The VOW Act), is being recognized as one of
the bridge programs in the Veterans’ Licensing
and Certification Demonstration Project, a
federal program designed to help veterans
expedite licensing required for employment.
“It is a great honor to help veterans transition
Air Force 3P0X1, Marine Corps 5811), and
Truck Driver (Army 88M, Marine Corps 3531).
The interim report, detailing the outcomes of
the initiative, consists of an introduction, design
overview, implementation recommendations,
general data and assessment as well as a cost study.
The first four sections provide a comprehensive
picture of demonstration activities and offer a
common framework for sharing lessons learned
with other states interested in replicating these
strategies. A cost study is also included to show
the savings to federal programs when a veteran
completes an accelerated pathway towards
licensing versus duplicate training under a fulllength
pathway.
quickly from their work in the military to a
successful career in the transportation industry,”
Reid Ransom, Millis Transfer Director of HR &
Recruitment, said.
States participating in the fast track program
for licensing for military applicants include:
Illinois, Iowa, Nevada, Minnesota, Virginia, and
Wisconsin. As part of the initiative, each state
has the option to select up to three high demand
occupations with licensing and credentialing
requirements that correspond with one of three
preselected military occupational specialties:
Medic (Army 68W, Navy Hospital Corpsman,
Air Force 4N0X1),
Josh Elmore Named TCA Highway Angel
Josh Elmore of Lincolnton, North
Carolina, a professional truck driver
for ABF Freight System, Inc., of Fort
Smith, Arkansas, has been named a
Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers
Association (TCA). He is
being recognized for helping
a motorist while her car was
on fire.
On February 20, 2015,
Elmore was driving along
Interstate 4, near Orlando,
Florida, when he came upon
a car that was smoking. The
driver did not seem to realize
that her car was on fire. Elmore
blew his horn until the driver
pulled over. Using a fire
extinguisher, he attempted to put out the
flames, but every time the oil dripped,
it would revive the flames. Within 10
Fred Weatherspoon
minutes, the car was engulfed. By that
time the fire department arrived and put
out the fire, the car had burned down to
the metal in the seats, and its tires were
melted.
The driver was very grateful
for Elmore’s help and later wrote
an email to his company, stating,
“He helped and comforted me
when I was so scared, and I am
so thankful to him for that!”
Elmore, who has been driving
for ABF since 2006, says that his
dad also drove for the company.
For his willingness to
help, TCA has presented Elmore with
a certificate, patch, lapel pin, and truck
decal. ABF Freight System, Inc. also
received a certificate acknowledging that
one of its drivers is a Highway Angel.
TCA’s Highway Angel program is
sponsored by EpicVue. Since the program’s
inception in August 1997, hundreds of
drivers have been recognized as Highway
Angels for the unusual kindness, courtesy,
and courage they have shown others while
on the job.
The
Bottom Line
By Shasta D. May
TIPS FROM THE IRS
ON PAYING TAXES
If you owe tax, the IRS offers safe and easy
ways to pay. Check out these payment tips:
• Pay your tax bill. If you get a bill,
you should pay it as soon as you can.
You should always try to pay in full
to avoid any additional charges. See if
you can use your credit card or to get
a loan to pay in full. If you can’t pay
in full, you’ll save if you pay as much
as you can. The more you can pay the
less interest and penalties you will owe
for late payment. The IRS offers several
payment options on IRS.gov.
• Use IRS Direct Pay. The best way to
pay your taxes is with IRS Direct Pay.
It’s the safe, easy and free way to pay
from your checking or savings account.
You can pay your tax in just five simple
steps in one online session. Just click on
the “Payment” tab on IRS.gov.
• Get a short-term payment plan. If
you owe more tax than you can pay, you
may qualify for more time, up to 120
days, to pay in full. You do not have to
pay a user fee to set up a short-term full
payment agreement. However, the IRS
will charge interest and penalties until
you pay in full. It’s easy to apply online
at IRS.gov. If you get a bill from the IRS,
you may call the phone number listed on
it. If you don’t have a bill, call 800-829-
1040 for help.
• Apply for an installment agreement.
Most people who need more time to
pay can apply for an Online Payment
Agreement on IRS.gov. A direct debit
payment plan is the hassle-free way
to pay. The set-up fee is much less
than other plans and you won’t miss a
payment. If you can’t apply online, or
prefer to do so in writing, use Form
9465, Installment Agreement Request.
Individuals can use Direct Pay to make
their installment payments. For more
about payment plan options, visit IRS.
gov.
• Check out an offer in compromise. An
offer in compromise, or OIC, may let
you settle your tax debt for less than the
full amount you owe. An OIC may be an
option if you can’t pay your tax in full.
It may also apply if full payment will
cause a financial hardship. No everyone
26 www.TruckDriverMagazines.com TRUCKING 2015
qualifies, so make sure you explore all
other ways to pay your tax before you
submit an OIC to the IRS. Use the OIC
Pre-Qualifier tool to see if you qualify.
It will also tell you what a reasonable
offer might be.
• Change your withholding or estimated
tax. If you are an employee, you
can avoid a tax bill by having more
taxes withheld from your pay. To do
this, file a new Form W-4, Employee’s
Withholding Allowance Certificate, with
your employer. The IRS Withholding
Calculator tool on IRS.gov can help
you fill out the form. If you are selfemployed
you may need to make or
change your estimated tax payments.
See Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for
Individuals for learn more.
To find out more see Publication 594, The
IRS Collection Process. You can get it on
