2014 NFL Fantasy
Football Sleepers
By Bill E Parsons
One of the keys to winning your fantasy football
league is the ability to draft Sleepers. “Sleepers” are
NFL players who are drafted in much lower rounds in
your fantasy football drafts than their ending statistics
warrant. In shopping terms, this is like getting a
bottle of Sam Adams Utopias for Budweiser prices.
In the fantasy football world, this is the avenue to the
league championship. We have seen championships
won on the heels of Sleepers every year. They have
come out of nowhere to register monster years after
being double-digit or waiver wire picks. When you
can grab a player at the end of your draft that becomes
your number 1 producer at a certain position,
you, my friends, have a true Sleeper.
Below are a few projected fantasy football sleepers
by position for the 2014 season.
2014 FANTASY FOOTBALL
SLEEPERS
QB: JAY CUTLER (CHICAGO) - Yes, Cutler
seems to be made of cupcakes thanks to his injury
history, but that is something that can be overlooked
under the right circumstances. It was obvious last
year that the hype about coach Marc Trestman’s offensive
prowess was warranted. Cutler put up great
numbers until he was hurt just past the midway point
in the season and Josh McCown didn’t miss a beat
(the pair combining for 4450 yards and 32 TDs). With
more time under center and absorbing the playbook,
you can expect even better numbers from this offense
this season. You can easily get Cutler around
the 10th round since most of the teams in your
league will scoop up the top 7 QBs early and will opt
for rolling the dice with the likes of Nick Foles and
RG3 before looking at the emotionless veteran.
ALSO CONSIDER: Josh McCown (Tampa),
Ryan Fitzpatrick (HOU)
RB: TERRANCE WEST (CLEVELAND) - Thanks
to Johnny Football, no position outside of QB is
getting any attention in Cleveland even though they
added a lot of new faces at the skill positions. At
RB, they grabbed Ben Tate to be their starter but
they also moved up in the draft to grab West. Tate
has had a history of injuries so there is no way he
becomes a full-time workhorse, especially when he
is in a Kyle Shanahan offense that will have a QB
recovering from an ACL injury or a rookie learning
how to play the position. Because of those factors,
West will see lots of carries, RB1 carries when Tate
inevitably goes down. Word from training camp is
that West has shown very good hands, much better
than Tate, so that will get him more reps as well. You
could let someone else grab Tate in the 4th round
and then pounce on his handcuff in round 8.
ALSO CONSIDER: Dexter McCluster (TENN),
Jeremy Hill (CIN)
WR: BRANDIN COOKS (NEW ORLEANS) - It is
an inexact science to pick Saints’ receivers since
Drew Brees enjoys spreading the ball around, but
44 TJS 2014 www.TruckDriverMagazines.com
Sports, Etc.
there are a LOT of points to be shared. It has become
painfully obvious that Marques Colston has
significantly declined and Lance Moore is now on the
Steelers. Coach Sean Payton loves Cooks’ versatility
and will work him into the offense on the outside, in
the slot, returning kicks and even in the backfield.
He isn’t big, checking in at 5’ 10” and 189lbs but he
is quick. Rookie WRs are rarely consistent and often
disappoint, but the upside is too great to let him
slide past the 9th round.
ALSO CONSIDER: Emmanuel Sanders (DEN),
Justin Hunter (TENN)
TE: LADARIUS GREEN (SAN DIEGO) - the Tight
End is a position that is very deep and turns out
Sleepers year-in and year-out. Green saw his playing
time significantly increase last season as Philip
Rivers aired the ball out quite a bit and Green took
Looks away from an aging Antonio Gates. Gates is
still around, but Green is a beast at 6’6”, 240lbs, yet
he flashed 4.5 speed. He proved that he was a big
play threat in the middle of the field by logging 22.1
yards per catch. He is a lock for double-digit rounds
and has the potential for getting you similar stats to
TEs drafted many rounds earlier.
ALSO CONSIDER: Eric Ebron (DET), Zach Ertz
(PHIL)
JIMMY FENNIG TO
RETIRE AS CREW CHIEF
Jimmy Fennig, the crew chief for the No.
99 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team for Carl
Edwards and Roush Fenway Racing, will
leave the pit box at season’s end, according
to an ESPN report during the Oral-B USA 500
at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
With two wins this
season at Bristol Motor
Speedway and Sonoma
Raceway, Fennig
will end his career with
a shot at the championship
as part of the
Chase for the NASCAR
Sprint Cup. Those victories
have brought his
career total to 40.
Fennig began his
career wins with NASCAR Hall of Famer
Bobby Allison in 1987 and 1988. He won 14
races with Martin and 14 more with Busch.
Before teaming with Edwards last season,
Fennig worked with fellow Wisconsin racer,
Matt Kenseth, for three years and six wins.
The ESPN report
indicated Fennig was
speaking with the
Roush Fenway Racing
about a new role within
the organization.
Team president
Steve Newmark said at
Indianapolis that Fennig’s
future wouldn’t be
discussed until later in
the year.
career as a crew chief
in 1986 with Mark
Matt Kenseth and Jimmy Fennig in 2012
“All of our crew chief
decisions, engineer
Martin and was Martin’s pit boss from 1997-
2001 before working with Kurt Busch for four
seasons, including a championship campaign
in the first Chase in 2004.
The Milwaukee native earned his first two
decisions, as you guys know, they’re made
much later in the fall when Robbie Reiser and
Jack (Roush) sit down with those guys and
they have a dialogue about what 2015 will
look like,” Newmark said.
ALYSSA MILANO LEADS NASCAR
CELEBRITY LEAGUE
Actress Alyssa Milano continued her dominance
in the NASCAR with a high score for
the week of 332 points.
Milano was bolstered by having the Oral-B
USA 500 runner-up Matt Kenseth and the
driver who led the most laps in the race,
Kevin Harvick, in her lineup. It is the ninth
straight week she has finished in the topthree
for the week.
Singer Drew Ryniewicz continued her
56 TJS 2014
strong run of late with 308.5 points , which
was good for a second-place finish for the
week. Ryniewicz had Harvick in her lineup as
well as two top-10 finishers in Danica Patrick
and Kyle Larson. Danica’s sixth-place finish
was her best finish in the Sprint Cup Series.
No participants had Atlanta race winner
Kasey Kahne in their lineups. After the 25th
week, Milano now has an overall lead of 819
points.

NASCAR, ESPN RALLY FANS
BEHIND CHASE DRIVERS
NASCAR unveiled the biggest, most
engaging marketing campaign in the history
of the sport to promote the all new Chase
for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. At the heart of
the effort is a collaboration with ESPN that
features five original television spots, an educational
video, and an extensive social media
push that will rally fans, teams, tracks, and
partners around The Chase like never before.
The national marketing initiative will underscore
the drama and excitement of NAS-
CAR’s premier series’ new 10-race playoff
format unveiled earlier this year.
“We made a bold decision at the beginning
of the season to make our Chase for the
NASCAR Sprint Cup all about winning,” said
Brent Dewar, NASCAR chief operating officer.
“Now that we’re just weeks away from the
start of The Chase, NASCAR, working closely
with ESPN, is going to market with a creative
platform that is just as innovative and reflective
of how important this moment is for our
sport.”
The creative team tapped the star power of
some of the sport’s most compelling drivers
and was inspired by their respective legions
of loyal fans. The most integrated marketing
effort the sanctioning body has ever put forth
NASCAR NEWS
highlights the passion, language and motifs of
competition -- establishing drivers, automotive
teams as unique “nations,” with the fans as
their loyal followers.
The fully integrated collaboration between
NASCAR and ESPN is the first of its kind with
a broadcast partner for the sanctioning body.
Working with one agency, Ogilvy & Mather
New York, NASCAR and ESPN achieve a
singular vision and narrative that will extend
from the track to the race broadcast.
“The campaign celebrates this bold and
transformational moment in NASCAR’s
history, taking fans along for the ride and accentuating
the drama and intensity of the new
elimination format as each round unfolds.”
said Scott Parker, vice president of marketing
at ESPN.
Interstate Teams Drive
More and Earn More
Interstate Distributor Co. recently announced
a new pay package for its team drivers. The
new pay package will allow drivers to maximize
their pay with a Pay for Performance Bonus.
The new bonus will allow teams to earn up to
an additional $.06 per mile.
Interstate’s new pay package allows a team
driver with 6 months experience to achieve this
through base rate (mileage + per diem) and a
monthly bonus of up to $.06 per mile. The mileage
bonus is designed to be achievable and
acknowledge the drivers that are working hard.
In July 2014, Interstate had 65% of eligible
drivers hit the bonus. For Teams that bonus
starts at just 18,000 miles and is maximized at
only 23,000 on
the month.
Zack Midles,
Team Division
Manager, commented,
“Our
goal with the Team Division is to have every
driver maximize the bonus monthly. They are
here to drive and be treated with respect. We
are committed to working with each driver to
do that or meet their unique needs.”
Interstate is proud to reward driving associates
for their hard work and effort.
“We came up with a solution for drivers that
are committed to maximizing their mileage and
pay with a Monthly Pay for Performance. We
allow the best drivers to run more miles and
get paid more each month. Drivers that drive
more will earn more at Interstate,” stated Abbie
Reed, Recruiting Division Manager.
This is accomplished through the company’s
innovative approach to driver compensation.
Driving Associates on eligible fleets have the
opportunity to increase their pay by $.06 per
mile each month for simply being safe and
driving.
“Why should a driver have to wait to be
rewarded for the work they just performed if
they hit the goal; that is why we are paying the
bonus each month not quarterly,” stated Reed.
“We value our drivers here at Interstate
and we’re always looking for more ways to
compensate them for their outstanding performance,”
said Interstate Distributors’ CEO Marc
Rogers. “Our new pay package for team drivers
gives them more control over how much money
they can make.”
Maverick Opens
Expanded Driver
Training Center
Maverick Transportation celebrated the
expansion of its driver training center with an
official grand opening.
The $4 million expansion brings the training
center’s total classrooms to seven and training
bays to eight, where drivers live load all
products hauled and are trained in the rigorous
securement techniques Maverick is known
for. Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects integrated
forward thinking, environmentally conscious
solutions that minimize energy consumption
such as custom louvers to filter sunlight and
automatic lighting throughout the building.
Many of the design elements of the new facility
incorporate products that Maverick hauls
including steel, lumber and glass.
With the additional space, Maverick now
has the ability to train 210 drivers at any one
time. “The new driver training center effectively
doubles the amount of space, classrooms, and
students we can bring through our program,”
said Vice President of Safety and Training Dean
Newell. “This is where our drivers start their
career with Maverick and that says a lot.”
Celadon Makes
Investments in Newly-
Acquired Flatbed Business
Following on the heels of their acquisition
of Evans Trucking earlier this summer, Celadon
Trucking Services has recently ordered tractors
for the flatbed fleet, including
Kenworth W900, Peterbilt 579
and International LoneStar
tractors.
In addition, the company
also is buying 100 new 53-foot
aluminum flatbed trailers. To
complement this equipment, Celadon has also
purchased deluxe, enclosed head racks.
“We are looking to grow our base of owner
operators for our flatbed business,” commented
Nate Roberts, Vice President of Specialized
Services at Celadon. “This trio of quality tractor
options, both new and used, coupled with
an attractive leasing program and great pay
packages, offer an outstanding opportunity for
those considering a career as a lease purchase
driver.”
Celadon returned to the flatbed business after
a 13-year absence with their
acquisition of Evans Trucking
in Butler, Indiana. Additionally,
with the purchase, Celadon
has been able to strengthen its
Local and Dedicated presence
and capabilities in the Midwest. The Evans
terminal in Butler, Indiana has been added
to the Celadon network and the four Evans
warehouses in Angola, Butler, Garrett and Terre
Haute, Indiana are now part of Celadon Logistics
operations.
