Translation into Romanian
Romanian translation of the works of Carmelite saints underway
Rome - Italy, November 15, 2012 (Communicationes).- The journey began in 2003 through an
agreement with the publishing house Editorial Monte Carmelo headquartered in the province
of Burgos, Spain. With it, the Romanian community obtained the rights to the translation of
the complete works of Saint Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross.
Later, in 2008, the province of Venice decided to continue championing that language and
created its own publisher, the Editura Carmelitană. The goal keeps getting larger and besides
translating the works of the founding saints, the translation of other authors’ works have been
added to the list, such as the works of Elizabeth of the Trinity, Thérèse of Lisieux, Edith Stein,
and other writings associated to the history of the Discalced Carmel.
Saint Teresa’s Interior Castle has already been translated and a new edition is planned for the
near future. Translations of The Book of Her Life, Foundations, and Way of Perfection are far
advanced. The intention is to have all of Saint Teresa’s books translated for the celebration of
the 5th Centenary of her birth.
On another note, the minor writings of Saint John of the Cross have already been translated:
The Sayings of Light and Love, Letters, and Special Counsels. Spiritual Canticle and Dark Night
will soon be published.
Work on a Romanian publication of the complete works of Edith Stein is also underway; five
volumes are already in print. To disseminate them to the greatest extent possible, they have
been publicized in the book lounge in Bucharest.

Appointment
Father Luigi Gaetani elected president of the Italian Conference of Major Superiors
(CISM)
Rome - Italy, November 7, 2012 (Communicationes).- Father Luigi Gaetani was elected
president of the Italian Conference of Major Superiors (CISM) on November 6. He is currently
Provincial of Naples.
The election took place during the 52nd General Assembly of the CISM which had as its title,
“Time for a new evangelization: The responsibility of religious.”
According to Vatican Radio, Father Luigi Gaetani received the nomination with surprise and as
a gift the Lord grants at one of life’s moments. Gaetani also explained that he faces this
appointment as a journey he must undertake in the company of other brothers.
This assembly of the Italian Conference of Major Superiors was especially relevant since it was
the first organization to reflect on the New Evangelization after the recent Synod of Bishops
called under the same theme.
Father Luigi Gaetani was the Order’s definitor General from 2003 to 2009. Within his province
he has also been Postulant Master, Student Master, a member of the Provincial Council, and
Provincial from 1996 to 2002 and from 2011 to the present.
CICLA meeting
Meeting of the General Assembly of the CICLA
São Roque - Brazil, November 1, 2012 (Communicationes).- The General Assembly of the
CICLA, the Interregional Conference of the Teresian Carmel for Latin America, was celebrated
October 27 and 28 in the Teresian Center for Spirituality in São Roque, Brazil. The
circumscriptions of the Discalced Carmelite Order in America participate in the Conference.
The Major Superiors of Latin America were in attendance together with the General Definitor,
Father Marcos Juchem Junior. This was the assembly for the triennium 2011-2014.
The purpose of the CICLA is to foster communication and cooperation among the
demarcations that comprise that conference. On this occasion it was steered by a widely
encompassing agenda with varied themes such as an evaluation of the recent ALACAR
Congress and thematic proposals for the next Congress which will be held in 2015, the
autonomy of new circumscriptions, strengths, difficulties, or challenges they present.
Additionally, there was dialogue about the progress of the in-depth study of the document
from the General Definitory in Ariccia and the “I WAS BORN FOR YOU” project.
There was also an evaluation of the Course for Formators in Chile and reports on formation
projects among the circumscriptions, such as novitiates, philosphates, and theologiates. The
Provincial of Mexico, Father Enrique Castro, presented the program of the upcoming Teresian
Mexico Congress in 2013.
Finally, the community of Rio de Janeiro presented a report on World Youth Day 2013 (JMJ Rio
2013) and provided details on the Carmelite World Youth Day scheduled for July 22 and

ALACAR meeting
More than one hundred participate in the 3rd Congress of the Latin American
Association of Carmelites
São Paulo - Brazil, November 1, 2012 (Communicationes).- The Latin American Association of
Carmelites, ALACAR, celebrated their third congress in the Santa Fe Pastoral Center in São
Paulo, Brazil, from October 22 to 27. Participants numbered 110 and included Carmelite
religious and laity from Latin America and the Caribbean, both O. Carm. and OCD. The theme
of this ALACAR congress was, “Community life in Carmel: Gift and sign of joy and hope.”
Three commitments were undertaken during this congress. The first was to promote exchange
among members of different levels of the Carmelite family (O. Carm., OCD, laity, and religious)
in the local, regional, and national arenas in order to deepen the fraternal dimension among
us.
Another was the importance of embracing, personally and as a community, the living out of
fraternity as a priority in our relationships. The final point was to broaden the fraternal
experience to encompass those who are poorest, recognizing them as the theological locus,
stimulating pastoral works that restore their dignity and place within the Church.
The Prior General, Father Fernando Millán, O. Carm., and the Definitor General for Latin
America, Father Marcos Juchem Junior, OCD, were present and encouraged all to recognize
the importance and necessity of these reunions between the Carmelite families.
Father Federico Ruiz
A book renders homage to Federico Ruiz
Madrid - Spain, November 1, 2012 (Communicationes).- The publishing company Editorial de
Espiritualidad, EDE, recently compiled a book in homage of Father Federico Ruiz Salvador. It
presents several articles written by Father Ruiz about spirituality as a science, spiritual growth,
the spiritual man, the mystical path, and mystagogy.
The book opens with a presentation on the thought of the author by J. D. Gaitán de Rojas and
closes with a bibliography of his entire works (1958-2009) compiled by M. Diego Sánchez.
This is a volume to gain an understanding of this representative of contemporary spirituality: a
book that serves as an homage to Father Federico Ruiz.
Father Federico Ruiz is one of the major specialists in spiritual theology and in the thought of
John of the Cross. Among his books that have been translated into the main European
languages are “Introduction to Saint John of the Cross,” “Mystic and Master,” and “Paths of
the Spirit.”

For several decades, Father Federico was a faculty professor at the Teresianum in Rome. He
wrote many articles and gave conferences around the world.
