Translation into Romanian<br />

Romanian translation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> Carmelite saints underway<br />

Rome - Italy, November <strong>15</strong>, <strong>2012</strong> (<strong>Communicationes</strong>).- The journey began in 2003 through an<br />

agreement with <strong>the</strong> publishing house Editorial Monte Carmelo headquartered in <strong>the</strong> province<br />

<strong>of</strong> Burgos, Spain. With it, <strong>the</strong> Romanian community obtained <strong>the</strong> rights to <strong>the</strong> translation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> complete works <strong>of</strong> Saint Teresa <strong>of</strong> Jesus and Saint John <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cross.<br />

Later, in 2008, <strong>the</strong> province <strong>of</strong> Venice decided to continue championing that language and<br />

created its own publisher, <strong>the</strong> Editura Carmelitană. The goal keeps getting larger and besides<br />

translating <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> founding saints, <strong>the</strong> translation <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r authors’ works have been<br />

added to <strong>the</strong> list, such as <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> Elizabeth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trinity, Thérèse <strong>of</strong> Lisieux, Edith Stein,<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r writings associated to <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Discalced</strong> Carmel.<br />

Saint Teresa’s Interior Castle has already been translated and a new edition is planned for <strong>the</strong><br />

near future. Translations <strong>of</strong> The Book <strong>of</strong> Her Life, Foundations, and Way <strong>of</strong> Perfection are far<br />

advanced. The intention is to have all <strong>of</strong> Saint Teresa’s books translated for <strong>the</strong> celebration <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> 5th Centenary <strong>of</strong> her birth.<br />

On ano<strong>the</strong>r note, <strong>the</strong> minor writings <strong>of</strong> Saint John <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cross have already been translated:<br />

The Sayings <strong>of</strong> Light and Love, Letters, and Special Counsels. Spiritual Canticle and Dark Night<br />

will soon be published.<br />

Work on a Romanian publication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> complete works <strong>of</strong> Edith Stein is also underway; five<br />

volumes are already in print. To disseminate <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> greatest extent possible, <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

been publicized in <strong>the</strong> book lounge in Bucharest.

Fa<strong>the</strong>r Luigi Gaetani elected president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Italian Conference <strong>of</strong> Major Superiors<br />

(CISM)<br />

Rome - Italy, November 7, <strong>2012</strong> (<strong>Communicationes</strong>).- Fa<strong>the</strong>r Luigi Gaetani was elected<br />

president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Italian Conference <strong>of</strong> Major Superiors (CISM) on November 6. He is currently<br />

Provincial <strong>of</strong> Naples.<br />

The election took place during <strong>the</strong> 52nd General Assembly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CISM which had as its title,<br />

“Time for a new evangelization: The responsibility <strong>of</strong> religious.”<br />

According to Vatican Radio, Fa<strong>the</strong>r Luigi Gaetani received <strong>the</strong> nomination with surprise and as<br />

a gift <strong>the</strong> Lord grants at one <strong>of</strong> life’s moments. Gaetani also explained that he faces this<br />

appointment as a journey he must undertake in <strong>the</strong> company <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r bro<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

This assembly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Italian Conference <strong>of</strong> Major Superiors was especially relevant since it was<br />

<strong>the</strong> first organization to reflect on <strong>the</strong> New Evangelization after <strong>the</strong> recent Synod <strong>of</strong> Bishops<br />

called under <strong>the</strong> same <strong>the</strong>me.<br />

Fa<strong>the</strong>r Luigi Gaetani was <strong>the</strong> Order’s definitor General from 2003 to 2009. Within his province<br />

he has also been Postulant Master, Student Master, a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Provincial Council, and<br />

Provincial from 1996 to 2002 and from 2011 to <strong>the</strong> present.<br />

CICLA meeting<br />

Meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Assembly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CICLA<br />

São Roque - Brazil, November 1, <strong>2012</strong> (<strong>Communicationes</strong>).- The General Assembly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

CICLA, <strong>the</strong> Interregional Conference <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Teresian Carmel for Latin America, was celebrated<br />

October 27 and 28 in <strong>the</strong> Teresian Center for Spirituality in São Roque, Brazil. The<br />

circumscriptions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Discalced</strong> Carmelite Order in America participate in <strong>the</strong> Conference.<br />

The Major Superiors <strong>of</strong> Latin America were in attendance toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> General Definitor,<br />

Fa<strong>the</strong>r Marcos Juchem Junior. This was <strong>the</strong> assembly for <strong>the</strong> triennium 2011-2014.<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CICLA is to foster communication and cooperation among <strong>the</strong><br />

demarcations that comprise that conference. On this occasion it was steered by a widely<br />

encompassing agenda with varied <strong>the</strong>mes such as an evaluation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> recent ALACAR<br />

Congress and <strong>the</strong>matic proposals for <strong>the</strong> next Congress which will be held in 20<strong>15</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />

autonomy <strong>of</strong> new circumscriptions, strengths, difficulties, or challenges <strong>the</strong>y present.<br />

Additionally, <strong>the</strong>re was dialogue about <strong>the</strong> progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> in-depth study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> document<br />

from <strong>the</strong> General Definitory in Ariccia and <strong>the</strong> “I WAS BORN FOR YOU” project.<br />

There was also an evaluation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Course for Formators in Chile and reports on formation<br />

projects among <strong>the</strong> circumscriptions, such as novitiates, philosphates, and <strong>the</strong>ologiates. The<br />

Provincial <strong>of</strong> Mexico, Fa<strong>the</strong>r Enrique Castro, presented <strong>the</strong> program <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> upcoming Teresian<br />

Mexico Congress in 2013.<br />

Finally, <strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong> Rio de Janeiro presented a report on World Youth Day 2013 (JMJ Rio<br />

2013) and provided details on <strong>the</strong> Carmelite World Youth Day scheduled for July 22 and<br />

attended by <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r General. Those wishing to attend can sign up online at<br />

ALACAR meeting<br />

More than one hundred participate in <strong>the</strong> 3rd Congress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Latin American<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> Carmelites<br />

São Paulo - Brazil, November 1, <strong>2012</strong> (<strong>Communicationes</strong>).- The Latin American Association <strong>of</strong><br />

Carmelites, ALACAR, celebrated <strong>the</strong>ir third congress in <strong>the</strong> Santa Fe Pastoral Center in São<br />

Paulo, Brazil, from October 22 to 27. Participants numbered 110 and included Carmelite<br />

religious and laity from Latin America and <strong>the</strong> Caribbean, both O. Carm. and OCD. The <strong>the</strong>me<br />

<strong>of</strong> this ALACAR congress was, “Community life in Carmel: Gift and sign <strong>of</strong> joy and hope.”<br />

Three commitments were undertaken during this congress. The first was to promote exchange<br />

among members <strong>of</strong> different levels <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carmelite family (O. Carm., OCD, laity, and religious)<br />

in <strong>the</strong> local, regional, and national arenas in order to deepen <strong>the</strong> fraternal dimension among<br />

us.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r was <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> embracing, personally and as a community, <strong>the</strong> living out <strong>of</strong><br />

fraternity as a priority in our relationships. The final point was to broaden <strong>the</strong> fraternal<br />

experience to encompass those who are poorest, recognizing <strong>the</strong>m as <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ological locus,<br />

stimulating pastoral works that restore <strong>the</strong>ir dignity and place within <strong>the</strong> Church.<br />

The Prior General, Fa<strong>the</strong>r Fernando Millán, O. Carm., and <strong>the</strong> Definitor General for Latin<br />

America, Fa<strong>the</strong>r Marcos Juchem Junior, OCD, were present and encouraged all to recognize<br />

<strong>the</strong> importance and necessity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se reunions between <strong>the</strong> Carmelite families.<br />

A book renders homage to Federico Ruiz<br />

Madrid - Spain, November 1, <strong>2012</strong> (<strong>Communicationes</strong>).- The publishing company Editorial de<br />

Espiritualidad, EDE, recently compiled a book in homage <strong>of</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r Federico Ruiz Salvador. It<br />

presents several articles written by Fa<strong>the</strong>r Ruiz about spirituality as a science, spiritual growth,<br />

<strong>the</strong> spiritual man, <strong>the</strong> mystical path, and mystagogy.<br />

The book opens with a presentation on <strong>the</strong> thought <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author by J. D. Gaitán de Rojas and<br />

closes with a bibliography <strong>of</strong> his entire works (1958-2009) compiled by M. Diego Sánchez.<br />

This is a volume to gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> this representative <strong>of</strong> contemporary spirituality: a<br />

book that serves as an homage to Fa<strong>the</strong>r Federico Ruiz.<br />

Fa<strong>the</strong>r Federico Ruiz is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major specialists in spiritual <strong>the</strong>ology and in <strong>the</strong> thought <strong>of</strong><br />

John <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cross. Among his books that have been translated into <strong>the</strong> main European<br />

languages are “Introduction to Saint John <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cross,” “Mystic and Master,” and “Paths <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Spirit.”<br />

For several decades, Fa<strong>the</strong>r Federico was a faculty pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Teresianum in Rome. He<br />

wrote many articles and gave conferences around <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
