Catch the Drop 

Campaign 

Turning on the tap and letting the 

water flow endlessly is something 

you do without thinking. Fresh water 

is a small percent of all water on earth 

and the amount of fresh water 

available shrinks every year. 

The ‘Catch the Drop’ campaign helps one 

to become aware of the need for water 

conservation. It makes one aware of how much water 

is wasted and how we can adapt our everyday 

habits to minimize our water-footprint. A number of 

school children have joined up and have started 

practising water-saving initiatives. Harvey has joined 

the campaign!

A Word from the Minister 

You and me can help make a 

difference. We need to understand 

that we do not have an endless 

supply of water around us. Water is 

a natural treasure. The conservation 

of water is very important for Malta 

and Gozo. Changing our lifestyles 

and daily habits will help us use 

water sensibly. All it takes is a little 

bit of extra effort from our side. So 

let us all give it a big push to make 

it happen.

THE EASY WATER ACTION PLAN 

10 SIMPLE WAYS TO USE WATER WISELY 

1 Repair dripping taps now. 

2 Do not leave the tap running while you brush your teeth. 

3 Don't overfill the kettle when making a hot drink. 

4 Take a quick shower rather than a bath. 

5 Only use the washing machine or dishwasher when you 

have a full load. 

6 Think before throwing used water down the drain! How 

can it be reused? 

7 Use a (broom) bucket of water for washing the yard or 

watering the garden – not a hose pipe. 

8 Keep the water catchment area and the cistern in your 

home in good condition. 

9 Use water from the cistern for flushing, to water the 

garden or wash floors, cars and more. 

10 Consider a second class water flushing system for your 

home.

Climate change is disrupting nature 

so we must learn how to preserve 

our planet. Global warming is 

contributing to water shortages 

around the world and everyone 

should be aware that man is 

responsible for the problems. 

So much waste can be recycled 

and so much water can be 

conserved if we just stop and 

think! 

Surrounded by the beautiful 

waters of the Mediterranean 

Sea, would you believe that 

Malta is one of the driest 

countries in the world? As one 

of the countries having the 

least amount of water-resources, 

the fear is that Malta is 

becoming drier, and with added 

inconsistencies in rainfall, 

flooding also means that water 

is lost. The population is 

growing with an influx of tourists 

especially in the summer months, so 

whilst water consumption is increasing, 

water resources are decreasing. 

With no time to waste we should start 

now and ‘Catch every drop’.

Short showering uses less water than filling up a tub, but sometimes I like to relax in a bath of bubbles. 

As you can see my animal friends have the same idea in helping me to save water - with a plan that we 

all get in the bath together! If only there was enough room! The duck can’t stand the 

bubbles and the fish is trying to escape at the sight of the oncoming scuba diver.
