You can read all about the cause of Friends of Heritage Green
Group leading up to their success on page 59. Mark Hope from
the Friends of Heritage Green Group wrote us a lovely testimonial,
for which we are very grateful.
"Kate and Becky at Streetwise have provided unswerving support
throughout our 18 months successful campaign to save a local
field from developers by always making room for an article,
mentioning our group in their edition preview notes and squeezing
us in to their Stop Press. The publication quality and layout is
always very impressive and has given the group professional
media coverage helping our cause and credibility no end! “
There’s a fascinating article on page 51 written by local historian
Gary Heywood –Everett on the Norden Riviera, also known as
‘Rochdale by the Sea’. For those of you who remember this well
known landmark, it was Rochdale’s own heated open-air pool
based on Edenfield Road in Norden, packed with locals using the
diving boards and slides or just hanging around in the spectator
stands, cafes and gardens. In these modern times, it’s hard to
imagine why so many flocked to the Norden Riviera which was
opened in 1935, but for those who couldn’t afford a longer
journey to the seaside, it provided the ideal location for a great
family day out.
Until next month….
CUT YOUR
ELECTRICITY BILLS
AND GET PAID FOR
THE ELECTRICITY
YOU GENERATE!
Established over 25 years ago Electronica
Systems are renewable energy specialists
and amongst the market leaders, providing
bespoke services to both the domestic and
commercial markets.
All the products that we supply are high
efficiency providing significant environmental
and economical benefits to the property
owner.
Our Solar Panels are the best performing due
to the fact that they are supplied credible,
ethical and established companies.
Solar PV panels are amongst the most effective
and popular means of renewable energy
generation available and due to their simplicity,
durability and efficiency – are being installed in
ever increasing volumes. Even on a cloudy day
they can convert the light into substantial
amounts of electricity which can be used in the
home – or exported to the national grid if not
used. Electricity exported to the grid is charted
by an export meter which ensures that the
home owner is paid for the power they sell.
PV Solar panel systems are also a guaranteed
means of income thanks to the Feed in Tariff
Scheme which pays homeowners a set rate for
every unit of electricity they produce (whether
it is used or sold back to the grid).
Solar PV Panels can also be installed on
commercial and industrial premises. Depending
upon the size and generation capabilities of
the PV panels, a company can greatly reduce its
energy costs whilst also generating
supplementary revenue through the Feed in
Tariff Scheme. In addition to the financial
benefits, the installation of a solar PV system
also helps the organization get a step closer to
attaining carbon neutrality.
Norden Riviera : Rochdale by the Sea
Before the days of the leisure complexes with waves, sandy beaches and entertainment, just off
Edenfield Road in Norden, Rochdale had its own place to go to swim in a heated open-air pool,
use the diving boards and slides or just hang
around with friends in the spectator stands,
the cafes and gardens. Not only that but there
was a sports field with horse riding facilities,
fences for show-jumping, cricket pitches and areas
for ball games. In the evening you could go
dancing to a dance orchestra and be waited on by
page boys wearing white uniforms with gilt
buttons.
The Norden Riviera in the 1930s
It is hard to imagine now but the Norden Riviera offered all that and lots more. Opened in 1935 the Riviera
(or the Riveera as most Rochdale people knew it) was ‘Rochdale by the sea’ for many who could not afford
a longer journey or who preferred something nearer to home.
It proved successful too, with more than 3000 pleasure seekers using
the complex in one particular year and regularly over 500 season
tickets sold. Unfortunately, following World War II the Riviera became
less attractive as overseas holidays, television and other weekend
recreational activities became popular. After a brief revival in the
1950’s the place fell into disrepair and became too expensive to
refurbish. It closed in 1966 and the site is now housing.
I was born in Rochdale and I’m interested in social history. The short
book I have written will, I hope, help preserve a piece of Rochdale’s
history that is in danger of being forgotten. It covers the economic
situation in the 1930’s when the Riviera opened, the national
enthusiasm for healthy outdoor activity and the rise of the Lido movement, the Riviera’s management, its
activities and its eventual decline and closure.
If you are interested in a copy of the book, contact Gary Heywood-Everett at either
garyheywoodeverett@yahoo.co.uk or by phoning him on 07745 201263.
CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
When out, leave lights on to give the illusion you are inside.
Make sure to lock all doors and windows.
Hide or take out the valuables from your car when parked and
ensure your vehicle is secured properly. Double check that all the
windows are up and move items inside (like bags) out of sight as
they could attract a burglar
Fit external lighting around your home.
Use automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when you’re out.
Don’t leave your house/vehicle keys near doors or on window sills
Rochdale’s Pioneers
of Worker Education
At the beginning of the 20th century, many workingmen and women in
Rochdale, as in so many industrial towns across the United Kingdom, were
eager to build on the knowledge they had of the world. ey wanted to learn, not
just about science or literature but about their own industrial experience and
their social and political place in it. ey wanted higher education and their
experiences in organised schooling had given them a taste for it!
Soon, their appeals for knowledge
were heard, and men of learning
from the Co-operative Movement
and from the universities came
forward to help them with
educational courses that met their
intellectual, spiritual and political
needs. At the forefront of this
e Rochdale WEA Tutorial Class of 1908
support rose the Workers
Educational Association (the WEA) and its leader Albert Mansbridge but it needed a town
and a group of students to carry out its great ‘experiment’ in worker education.
Rochdale was chosen, for its radical history, its network of educational organisations, its
nonconformist energies and its commitment to learning. In 1908 the town hosted the first
WEA tutorial class in the country and recruited one of the great socialist thinkers of the
day in R H Tawney to lead, and in the end to be led by, its worker students
is important but somewhat forgotten story has now been turned into a book by local
historian Gary Heywood-Everett who stumbled across a photograph of the first tutorial
class of 1908 in the library at Lancaster University and recognised his old school – Rochdale
Tech’ – as the venue for this historic experiment. Determined to recover details of this lost
but important event, Gary interviewed relatives of some of the first students, sought out
the existing literature and, after conducting extensive research in the archives was able to
identify and celebrate individual students,
Albert Mansbridge
discuss their aspirations, look at what they did
for a living and find what some of them went on
to become. In the book, not only does he discuss
the reason why Rochdale was chosen as the site
for this great experiment in worker education but
also asks what motivated the first students to
join and, following their experiences, how they
used their knowledge.
ere have been a number of histories of the
WEA but Gary Heywood-Everett wanted to write
one from the point of view of the studentworkers
by asking – who were they ? , what did
Gary Heywood-Everett
they do it for? what did they go on to be ?
His interest is from both an educational and a social
inclusion point of view. ese working men and
women, often factory hands during the day, managed
to summon up the energy and intellectual curiosity
to study Economic History and Politics both in their
free time and in an organised class at the weekend.
is is in addition to writing high quality essays for
their tutor. e WEA tutorial class marks the first of
thousands of such classes throughout the UK and worldwide.
e book, entitled ‘Rochdale’s Pioneers of Worker Education: the WEA class of 1908’ tells
the story of how the WEA tutorial class came into being through the energies of local
people within the Rochdale Educational Guild, discusses the social situation faced by those
who came forward for study and looks at who the students were and what they went on to
become, some on a national stage. Drawn from the mills and often the poorest
neighbourhoods in Rochdale, this first group of students were indeed pioneers of worker
education.
HERITAGE GREEN SAVED!
The Friends of Heritage is celebrating Rochdale Council overturning its decision to sell Heritage
Green (field at the junction of Caldershaw Road/Cut Lane). On 9th March, Rochdale Council’s
Township Committee voted unanimously not to sell Heritage Green to developers.
The original decision to sell Heritage Green for the
building of six houses on the site was taken way
back on 5th November 2014, without any
consultation with residents or public advertisement
of such plans, since when the Friends of Heritage
Green has been campaigning tirelessly to get the
Council to alter its decision. To get the Council to
change its mind has been no mean feat and has
involved relentless and extensive effort by the
group. Achieving such change is a momentous
victory for the community and proves that a
community can speak up and change things.
The Friends will continue with its application to
register Heritage Green as a Village Green as, if the
field is registered as a Village Green, the registration
will preserve Heritage Green for use for recreation
and leisure purposes for the long term and prevent
the Council from making any future plans to sell the
land. At the time of writing this article, Rochdale
Council is in the process of “farming out” the
evaluation of the application, and the decision as to
whether or not to register the field as a Village
Green, to another Local Authority as Rochdale
Council believes there is potential for a conflict of
interest if Rochdale Council decides upon the fate of
its own field.
The Friends of Heritage Green began in February
2015 numbering 28 people but the membership has
swelled to approximately 270 members and with
many more local residents supporting the cause. The
Committee of the Friends of Heritage Green group
would like to thank each and every one of you for
your support and demonstrating that the people of
Norden and Caldershaw don’t take things lying
down. A fantastic community effort of which
everybody should be rightly proud!
Other “Thank You’s”. Stalwarts: Adrian and Jennifer
Sutcliffe and Joyce and Ian Johnson. Chairman
Thompson and the rest of the Committee.
Volunteers: Lords, Drurys, Graham Davenport, Trevor
Mayne, litter pickers, tree “tidyuppers” and others.
The young: Oliver Jackson, Leo Thompson, Nathan
Bibbington, Finlay Beaumont and the rest of the
footballers and all the other kids that play on the
field. Those in their prime such as Audrey Thorpe
and other members of all ages. Councillors Winkler,
Holly and Gartside, who have been with us from the
start, and our MP Liz McInnes. And to my Lynn who
has had to put up with me spending too much time
on the campaign - thanks for your support.
Thank You’s to those in the wider community include
a big thank you to Kate and Becky and the rest of the
team at Streetwise, who have provided
unswerving support throughout our long campaign,
always making room for our articles, mentioning our
group in their edition preview notes and squeezing
us in to their Stop Press when we won! Rochdale
Observer and Rochdale Online for publicising our
activities and efforts and achievements. Norden
Carnival Committee for letting us walk in the
Carnival and supporting us. St. Vincent de Paul’s and
Norden Area Forum for letting us use their facilities.
Local businesses: Wildbloods butchers, Lisa
(Hairdresser, Whitworth Rd) and Devine Deli at The
Pavillions and anybody else who has helped and
supported us that I have forgotten to mention.
Mostly, the “Thank You” goes to all the Friends of
Heritage Green. 270 members who never grumble
and anything asked of them is done. 136 people
took the time and trouble to complete the Village
Green application – thank you! The site visit by the
Councillors in the pouring rain with dogs and
children a plenty and the young and the old out in
force and belligerent! – Brilliant! We couldn’t have
done it without you! Well done and many thanks! I’m
proud to be in your number.
The campaign of course continues and won’t stop
until Heritage Green is a Village Green and is just
how the community want it to be. As always,
participation and support from anyone in any way
would be welcomed and greatly appreciated. If you
are interested in joining the Friends of Heritage
Green (for free) and receiving information relating to
the campaign, all you have to do is provide your
name and contact details. Please contact Mark Hope
by email on markhope680@btinternet.com or
telephone on 07812 195873.
Well done!
Rochdale Ladies
Lifeboat Guild
The RNLI is a charity that saves lives at sea. In 2015 the Lifeboats in the north of England launched 954 times rescuing
903 people. The RNLI Flood Rescue Team rescued 400 people from floods over three days in Cumbria. Lifeguards
dealt with 1,721 incidents, assisting 2,065 people. The Charity provides Lifeboats, Lifeguards, safety advice and
inland flood rescue and the crew members are all volunteers.
The Lifeboat would not function without all the volunteers – in fact 95% of the RNLI’s people are volunteers. Rochdale Ladies
Lifeboat Guild will be celebrating 90 years in 2017 and the early meetings were held in the Town Hall, we are a small committee
holding fundraising events such as an Afternoon Tea in April and a Coffee Morning in October, both events held at the Town Hall,
Rochdale. Other events organised have been an Antiques Valuation Evening, Quiz Night and Theatre Trips all very successful and
well received.
It costs £140M each year to run the lifesaving
service 85p in every pound donated goes to the
rescue service 15p is reinvested to generate more
funds.
Coastal Lifeboat Stations have 10 minutes for the
crew to drop whatever they are doing to form a
crew and launch. However on the Thames in
central London winter water temperature is
around 5 degrees centigrade and people only
have seconds to survive. On a cold March
morning in the dark the call came there was a
person in the water metres downriver from the
Tower Lifeboat Station at Waterloo Bridge the
person would be fighting against at least 3 knots
of river current. There were three people in the
water hanging by their fingertips onto a section
of wall, a Spanish student had fallen in and was
unable to swim, his friend tried to help and a
barman jumped in to help the pair stay afloat.
Fortunately due to the Lifeboat being nearby the
three were rescued within minutes and in the care
of the London Ambulance Service. The moral of
the story do not enter the water to help but intead
dial 999 and ask for the Lifeboat.
Norden Carnival -
The Circus comes to the Village
The preparations for this year's Carnival are coming together as everyone
gets into the 'Circus' theme. There have been an unprecedented number of
enquiries for stalls this year already. We've got everything from locally
made treats to candles and great gift ideas. The Carnival falls on the 18th
June, the Saturday before Father's Day so it'll be ideal to pick up those last
minute treats for your Dad. There'll be plenty of entertainment at Norden
School after the parade has passed through the village. There'll be a
range of funfair rides as well as live music, too.
We're really interested in hearing from anyone interested in joining the parade.
There's no fee to enter and local charities and community groups are given a
donation each year. We ask that each group get into the spirit of the Parade and
dress up in this year's theme of 'Circus'. In the past we've had local pubs, all the
schools, charities and local businesses getting involved. The parade has been
getting better and better each year - we're sure this year will exceed
all expectations. If you're interested,
please email
nordencarnival@sky.com or
tweet us @NordenCarnival.
We look forward to seeing
everyone on the 18th June! The
sun will be there, so make sure you
are, too.
Best wishes,
Heaton Hall looks ahead to
re-opening to the public
Following a significant and essential programme of works at the 18th century property, Heaton Hall is starting to
look forward to inviting the public back into the house – and local people are being asked how they would like to
see it used. In response to huge public demand, the ambition is to work towards opening the hall for weddings and
other events in the future, as well as being able to view the beautiful decorative interiors. Already confirmed,
Heaton Hall will be open to the public every second Sunday of the month between April and September for open
days with guided tours by The Friends of Heaton Hall group. The hall will also host other special events throughout
the year, including the national Heritage Open Days events, Christmas at Heaton and some performance-based
events.
A range of works have been
completed by North West
contractor, Conlon Construction
to maintain the building and
halt further decline.
The West Wing has been closed
since 1983 after fire gutted the
section of the historic building,
but work is now underway to
reinstate the original windows
and shutters, which have been
in storage since the fire and in
keeping with the Grade I status
of the hall. Historic England,
which has been a long-term
partner in restoring Heaton Hall, has so far provided £400k funding over the last two years to meet part of the cost of the glazing and joinery
and associated stonework repairs.Heaton Hall, designed by James Wyatt in 1772, is one of the region’s finest properties. Since 2012 phases of
work have been completed to ensure long-term protection against the elements, beginning with substantial works to repair the roof.
As a second phase of works last year, locally-based craftspeople also sensitively repaired the historically significant windows, joinery and
stonework in the central and east wings – all in accordance to the property’s listed status. Improvement work has also been completed across
the park using £600k investment from the Clean City Fund – allocated in part to Heaton Park from a one-off dividend paid to the city council as
part-owners of Manchester Airport Group. The funding has replaced bins and benches across the park, along with improvements to pathways and
a new toilet block at the farm building.
Announced last month, Clean City funding is also going to be used to fully refurbish the play area, which will replace or rebuild all of the current
play pieces, including the ten metre tower slide.Inclusive play pieces will be a key addition to Heaton Park’s play offer, with basket swings
capable of supporting wheelchair users and a brand new roundabout, which will also have full disabled access. Rosa Battle, Manchester City
Council’s executive member for culture and leisure, said: “We have a huge responsibility as guardians of Heaton Hall to make sure it is
protected for Manchester people to enjoy for generations to come. “Working on historic buildings present huge challenges – both financially
and in terms of quality – but the on-going work has protected the building from further deterioration. These are the essential first steps towards
inging the much-loved hall back to life. “We have some
plans to invite the public back to the hall – including monthly
tours with the friends’ group – but we’re eager to know what
you think should be done and how we can use this magnificent
building in the future.”
David Blood, Chair of the Friends of Heaton Hall, said: “We’re
thrilled with the progress being made at the Hall. Slowly and
surely the life and character is being brought back to this
historic property. We would urge anyone who is interested to
join one of our monthly tours and get a glimpse inside. It goes
without saying, the interiors are just as impressive as the
exteriors.”
Charles Smith, Heritage at Risk Principle for Historic England
in the North West said: “It’s exciting to see progress at the
Grade I listed Heaton Hall, one of Manchester's most special
buildings. The hall has been on our At Risk Register for several
years due to its deteriorating condition and a fire in the
1980s. We’re proud to be working with the council on this
wonderful building and our joint goal is to strengthen the
hall’s position in the lives and economy of local people,
eventually leading to its removal from the Register.”
Michael Conlon, chairman at Conlon Construction, “We’ve a
lot of experience in heritage projects and understand the skill,
materials and budgets required to deliver a project of this
nature. We take great pride in our work and are very pleased to have delivered a programme of work that will further extend the life of the
landmark building.”
Face Lift for Hutchinson
Road Play Area
Norden Councillor, Peter Winkler, is delighted to be able to report
that a plan to refurbish the children's play area at the Hutchinson
Road recreational site will come to fruition later this year.
The plan will utilise over £40,000 from housing development funding to not
only refurbish the existing play area, but install an additional new area of play
equipment at the existing site.
Councillor Winkler said "The
existing site is suitable for
children of up to 5 years. The
new additions will be suitable
for children up to 8 years old,
and with the play area at the
Jubilee Park for older children
this will mean a complete
offering for children of all ages
within the area."
“Myself and Counsellors
Gartside and Holly have been
pursuing this money for some time and we are delighted that the funding has
now been secured and put to such good use. We hope to have the new play
equipment installed quickly, so that local children can get the best use from
it over the summer months. There has been a consultation over the design of
the play area and we are confident that youngsters will love what we have
planned."
The money has come from housing development 106 monies which have to
be spent on recreational facilities within a specific area. After careful
consideration of a number of sites it was found that this would be the only
area which would meet the criteria for that funding. Local families are said
to be delighted at the news.
Springhill Hospice, Spring Fair Sunday 13th March 2016
The sun shone, birds sang and flowers bloomed at Springhill Hospice on Sunday 13th of
March. Hundreds of visitors took advantage of the crisp Spring day to visit the Broad
Lane hospice that had been transformed into a Springtime Easter wonderland for the
day.
With over 40 stalls, both inside the Hospice and in the award winning
gardens, visitors were spoilt for choice. On offer to the hosts of visitors were
everything from handbags to hanging baskets, pizzas to pancakes, cupcakes
to curry. Good fun was had by all as families took part in chocolate
tombolas, hook a duck and enjoyed the delights of the Hospice’s new wood
fired pizza oven, turning out freshly baked pizzas.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better day” said Mel Caffrey, Springhill
Fundraiser and Spring Fair organiser “It was a lovely relaxed afternoon.
People could enjoy the goodies on offer inside the Hospice and outside in
our flower and vegetable gardens”.
The Spring Fair provided a wonderful family day out with a bonus for
the Hospice, the event raised a record amount of cash, over
£7,500 so far with funds still being counted.
“We’re astounded at the generosity of the public and would
like to thank everyone who joined us on Sunday. By coming
to events like this year on year, the community reinforce their
support for the Hospice and the work of our doctors and nurses
both at the Hospice and out in the Borough” said Sarah Ford,
Springhill’s Income Services Manager.
With £3m a year to raise to keep the doors of the Hospice
open, the Springhill Fundraising Team won’t be sitting back
with their feet up today! “The Spring Fair is just one of a
long list of events we put on to raise money. Sunday April
24th, the annual Hospice to Hospice 10th Birthday Walk is
next on the agenda, followed swiftly on May 13th with Go
Green Day. For all you fair lovers out there, put a note in
your diaries for Sunday June 5th when we’ll be
transforming Roch Valley Riding Club into a Dog Show &
Traditional Summer Fete – a great family day out”, Sarah added.
Everyone’s a little bit Irish (sort of)
Andy Kelly reflects on a ten day long St Patrick’s day
About eighteen
months ago I
decided to scratch
an itch that had
been bothering me
for a while, and
started to put
together an Irish
band. Some of my
earliest memories
at home were
listening to The
Dubliners, The
Clancy Brothers
and Johnny Cash as Country and Irish
were pretty much the entirety of my
Dad’s record collection. In my teens and
early 20s, I was greatly influenced by
The Pogues so somewhere in my head I
have this back catalogue music that has
come out of, or been influenced by the
Emerald Isle. But would there be a
market for this sort of thing today. The
answer seems to be firm “Yes”.
The Scattering made their debut at The
Flying Horse on St Patrick’s Night 2015
and have not looked back. The six piece
band is made up of drums, bass, two
guitars, accordion and violin/mandolin.
It’s the latter two combinations that give
the band its distinctive sound along with
some close three part vocal harmony.
About a third of the songs The Scattering
play are traditional Irish songs, played in
a rocked up style- standards like Irish
Rover, Belle of Belfast City, Black Velvet
Band, Fields of Athenry and the like are
all on the set list. There’s a fair slice of
more modern Irish artists- U2, Thin Lizzy,
The Saw Doctors and The Pogues; and
the rest is an eclectic mix of Country,
Reels, Punk, Pop and Folk all delivered
with The Scatterings unique sound.
Twelve months later and this Rochdale
based band have headlined both
Saturday night gigs at the Manchester
International Irish Festival in Albert
Square. Originally meant to be a
weeklong event, the festival was extended
this year to cover two weekends where
the band played to well over a thousand
people.
All of the band members make their
living through music in one way or
another as music tutors, classroom
teachers, managers and facilitators and
playing in The Scattering provides a
performance outlet for some very
talented local musicians. Throughout the
rest of the year, the band have regular
slots at both the Flying Horse Hotel in
Rochdale
and the
Horse and
Farrier pub
in Norden.
(It’s all
very
horsey!)
They have
host of other
engagements both
private and public
and have been asked
back to the Irish
festival in 2017.
The name by the way
has a double
meaning, referring to
both the farming
method of scattering
wheat or corn, and a
name given to the
Irish people scattered
or displaced across the globe. What is
unbelievable is that with the exception of
myself (and I claim dual Anglo Irish
heritage!) none of the band members
have any direct Hibernian heritage.
Somewhere in most of their ancestry it
exists though so hence being a little bit
Irish…
Andy Kelly- Bass and Vocals
Hi Kate and Becky
Thought I'd let you know how well your magazine is
read. Today at the Cutgate meeting we had 4 new
walkers and all from reading the Bamford and
Norden Streetwise Magazine. Thank you so much.
Walking is the best exercise. It is free. It relieves
loneliness and depression, controls weight,
reduces cholesterol and blood pressure and
walking in a group adds to the social life of lonely
and recently bereaved people. It also introduces
people to the areas where they live who have no
idea of the beauty and scenery round the corner
from their home.
Barbara Jessop
Syke Walk and Talk Group
I can't recommend Kate and the team at Streetwise
highly enough. Norden Carnival is an annual event in our
local village - organised by just five people in our spare
time but aended by a few thousand. Through
promoting the event for free in the magazine in the
months running up to the event, the Commiee is able
to encourage residents to join in the street parade on
the day as well as finding people to run craft stalls etc.
The magazine is so much more than just local listings
and advertising as it includes a range of interesting
articles - which also means that our updates are read
too. We take the June front cover to advertise our event
each year and its a really cost effective way of
encouraging local residents to aend the event. Apart
from Facebook and Twier, the only other advertising we
do is in the local shops - and even that gets re-enforced
through the Streetwise magazines as they are available
to pick up in the local shops, cafes, restaurants and
libraries. We know we get many referrals from
Streetwise and we really appreciate their support - and
patience when we're late for a deadline! The coverage
after the event is also a really good way to thank
everyone for supporting us.
Whether you're thinking about advertising or just listing
an event, we guarantee that Streetwise will provide a
complete and professional service.
