Random Thoughts From a Cluttered Mind
By Valerie Nusbaum
The other day I was looking
out my back door, and I spied the
neighbor’s cat lying on a bench in
my herb garden. He looked quite
serene. Then I noticed a beautiful
blue jay circling one of my cedar
trees. I glanced to my right and saw
a gorgeous bright red cardinal sitting
on the back fence. There was a baby
bunny poking its tiny head out from
under our garden shed, and I saw a
cute little chipmunk scamper across
the paving stones. Two dogs were
playing and chasing a butterfly in
their backyard. It was like something
from a fairy tale, and I swear I felt
just like Snow White.
Then the cat pounced on the
bunny and tried to eat it, the jay
started squawking and dove for the
chipmunk and one of the dogs did
something that never, ever happens in
a fairy tale.
Thought #1 – Real life is different
from the stuff you read about when
you were a kid. There are trolls and
monsters and fire-breathing dragons
all around, but they look a lot like
people we know. Prince Charming
doesn’t exist, and I hate to burst your
bubble ladies, but we girls aren’t
always in “princess” mode either. If
I slept on a pea, you’d find it a year
from now squashed and rotten under
the mattress.
I married a wonderful man. I
reminded myself of that fact as I
wiped off some kind of sticky goo
from the refrigerator door handle.
The goo didn’t look like anything we
had in our kitchen so I decided that
I didn’t want to know what it was. I
stuck my hand under scalding water
and used anti-bacterial cleanser on
everything.
Thought #2 – Marriage is all
about “give” and “take.” I give
Randy a lecture, and he takes a walk
around the block. He gives me advice
on how I shouldn’t wear those gray
exercise pants in public, and I take a
skillet and throw it at him. It’s a nice
skillet. I got it for my anniversary.
We have a ghost living in our
house. That’s the only explanation
I can think of for the disappearing
light bulbs. I buy new light bulbs and
store them in the cabinet under the
bathroom sink. The other day I went
in there to get a light bulb and the
box was empty. When I questioned
Randy, he swore up and down that
he would never put an empty box
back in the cabinet, so it must have
been the ghost.
Thought #3 – Some things just
aren’t worth arguing about. It takes
way too much energy to get worked
up over little things. I save my rants
for the big stuff. Refer to Thought
#2.
My mom was visiting a while
back after she’d had dental surgery,
and our dinner conversation went
something like this:
Me: “I saw Yo-Yo Ma on
television this morning.”
Mom: “What?”
Me: “I said I saw Yo-Yo Ma on
television this morning.”
Mom: “What do you want? You
keep saying ‘Yo Ma’ and when I
answer you don’t tell me what you
want.”
Randy: “Isn’t he the guy with
the long hair who looks like Doug
Henning?”
Me: “I think you mean Yanni.
Yo-Yo Ma plays the cello or violin or
something like that.”
Mom: “Speaking of Yonnie, I
saw her at the beauty shop the other
day.”
Randy: “I hate Brussels sprouts.”
Thought #4 – Sometimes it’s best
just to keep going. Not everything
needs to be explained. Some things
can’t be.
Randy and I took ballroom
dancing lessons. It was a long
time ago, and several years before
“Dancing with the Stars” came on
television. We thought it would be
something fun that we could do
together. It was fun, but we were so
terrible at it that the instructor gave
us our very own corner of the room
and she told us to stay in it. Maybe it
was because I can’t tell my left from
my right, and I kept running into
the other dancers. Or maybe it was
my uncontrollable laughter when
Randy got up on his toes and made
his “graceful” hands during the chacha.
That was bad enough, but the
instructor told all the men to put on
seductive facial expressions and poor
Randy just looked like something
was too tight. I’m laughing now as I
write this….
Thought #5 – Look for the humor
in everyday things. Not everyone will
agree with you and sometimes you’ll
get put in a corner, but who cares?
You’ll get a certificate like everyone
else when it’s over.
I’ll do my dreaming with my
eyes wide open, and I’ll do
my looking back with my eyes
closed. - Tony Arata,
