Resources<br />
Nature provides human society with a rich<br />
spectrum of start<strong>in</strong>g materials. In practice,<br />
the metal m<strong>in</strong>erals constitute the largest set<br />
of these resources <strong>–</strong> more than sixty different<br />
elements <strong>in</strong> all. Modern technology is totally<br />
dependent on perhaps four of them <strong>–</strong> the iron<br />
and manganese that (with m<strong>in</strong>or amounts<br />
of other metals) form structural steels, the<br />
alum<strong>in</strong>ium widely used <strong>in</strong> transportation, the<br />
lead used for storage batteries, and the copper<br />
that transmits power from the generator<br />
to the user. Cases nearly as strong could be<br />
made for perhaps four others <strong>–</strong> the chromium<br />
and nickel that (together with iron) form<br />
the sta<strong>in</strong>less steels, the z<strong>in</strong>c that <strong>in</strong>hibits<br />
metal corrosion, and the t<strong>in</strong> that is essential<br />
to modern electronics.<br />

The first five reports form the necessary basis for Report 6.<br />
A number of policy-relevant issues will be<br />
addressed <strong>in</strong> these reports, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
■ To what extent is <strong>in</strong>formation available on<br />
the metal stocks <strong>in</strong> society? (Report 1)<br />
In actuality, however, hardly any element can<br />
be elim<strong>in</strong>ated from a list of those important<br />
to modern society and cutt<strong>in</strong>g-edge technology.<br />
Manufacturers of everyth<strong>in</strong>g from computer<br />
chips to health care equipment rout<strong>in</strong>ely<br />
employ dozens of different elements, each<br />
carefully chosen because of a specific physical<br />
or chemical property. Some have just the<br />
right conductivity for a specific purpose, or<br />
the right melt<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t, or the right photon<br />
wavelength, or the right catalytic efficiency at<br />
high temperature. It is not generally realized,<br />
but modern technology makes use of virtually<br />
every gift of nature, and if it doesn’t do<br />
so <strong>in</strong> some <strong>in</strong>stances today, it probably will<br />
tomorrow.<br />
A key question that relates to this very broad<br />
and <strong>in</strong>tensive use of metals is whether society<br />
needs to be concerned about long-term<br />
supplies of any or many of them. This is a<br />
many-faceted question that cannot be answered<br />
quickly or unequivocally. To address<br />
it, the Global <strong>Metal</strong> Flows Group envisions a<br />
series of six reports, of which this is the first:<br />
■ How well can scientists quantify the spatial<br />
distributions of metal stocks <strong>in</strong> society?<br />
(Report 1)<br />
■ What is the efficiency with regard to metal<br />
recovery? (Report 2)
