Principal Points
What another amazing term we have had here at Kellyville HS!
I encourage you to read all of the success stories that follow.
Our Year 7 GAT project has been a challenging, and amazing
success. I would like to acknowledge the leadership, courage
and persistence of Mrs G Shakas throughout this endeavour.
I am proud that we will build on that success with an open
forum of parents and students, along with our entire staff,
during our School Development Day next term to make sure
that we truly unpack the results of this pilot project.
At our recent Merit Assemblies, the senior executive team
were proud to again present many Level Two (or beyond)
merits to our prolific achievers in the academic, sporting,
values and service domains. A key part of these ceremonies
was an essential message about RESPECT. It portrayed the
daily story of our cleaning staff – Maria and her entire team –
and their own personal stories. The school acknowledged the
hard work of our colleagues, and more importantly sought to
understand their own role in keeping our school clean, graffiti
free and in excellent condition. The same conditions they
would expect as if Kellyville HS was indeed “their own house”.
It has had a very immediate impact on our school playground,
and I sincerely hope that this continues into term two when
we return from the coming break. I’d like to acknowledge Mr
Caprarelli and the media team for preparing this very personal
story in the video, and again thank our entire Spotless team.
I would also like to acknowledge and farewell two outstanding
staff who have made valuable contributions to our school.
Mr Bruce Rennie has been a great asset to our school as
Technical Support Officer (TSO) in recent times. He has put in
place many systems to support staff, updated hardware and
been very flexible in his approach to ensuring our students
have the benefits of technology access in classrooms. I wish
him well in his sojourn to the far north coast.
Miss Lisa Knight has been merit selected to an English Teacher
position at James Ruse AHS. This is a wonderful achievement
and is an acknowledgement of her outstanding ability as a
classroom practitioner in both the PDHPE and English faculties
at our school. I know you will be sorely missed by both the
teaching staff and students at KHS; our loss is certainly James
Ruse gain. Congratulations!
I hope that you all have a safe and happy holiday break.
Year 7, 11, 12 Parent Teacher Night
Year 12 Reports were distributed last Tuesday and any report
that had not been collected has now been mailed home. The
7/11/12 Parent Teacher night was well attended by parents. If
you missed this opportunity, please make an appointment
with staff directly about any concerns that you may have.
Student OPAL CARD Information
With school holidays starting on 11 April, it is important to
remember that School Opal cards, including School Term Bus
Passes, will not be enabled for travel on weekends or during
school holidays. School Opal cards will be reactivated when
term two starts on 26 April. If a student gets a “Card not valid
– 65” message, they are not approved for that service and
should go online at www.transportnsw.info/school-students
to request any update required.
Scooters/Skateboards
There has been an increase in the number of students coming
to school with skateboards. Scooters or Skateboards that
cannot be secured in the bike racks are required to place them
in the Deputy Principal offices on entry to the school. They are
not to be used during the day or taken from class to class.
Parents are reminded – helmets are strongly recommended.
Please support KELLYVILLE PS – part of our community!!
Kellyville Public School’s “Skywalker Playground” has been
entered in ‘Australia’s Best Playground’ awards and is now
one of only 42 entries nationwide. We encourage you to vote
and support Kellyville PS as it establishes the school as being
the best playground in Australia, acknowledging the hard work
and commitment of staff and students. It is special because it
is made for children by children. Follow the link below …
Year 11 Half Yearly Examinations
These commence on Wed 27 th April and the timetable has
been distributed to all students. A reminder that if any student
misses an examination due to illness/misadventure, then they
should immediately contact the school and attempt to have
the examination rescheduled during that time with the Deputy
Principal. A medical certificate will be required.
We know that many HSC subjects will continue holiday classes
– a big thank you to all teaching staff involved. We wish you
all a safe, happy and relaxing holiday break.
Student Executive Council (SEC)
LEADERSHIP PLANNING DAY
On Thursday the student leaders of the school came together
in the connected classroom for a planning day. This involved
students from both the SEC and House Council. It was a first
for the House Council to join the SEC as we seek to widen the
leadership opportunities for the students at Kellyville HS.
We had lots of fun learning to work productively as a team,
getting to know each other better, and address a range issues
relevant to the students of Kellyville HS.
During the day they also planned a range of special days to
help support charities including Bear cottage Superhero day,
PINK stumps day (teachers are looking forward to beating yr.
12 at the annual cricket game) and of course Jersey day.
Mrs Bridger and I are extremely honoured and privileged to
work with such a wonderful group of young leaders. They
came together and expressed mature ideas, participated in all
activities enthusiastically and showed a passion for continually
improving KHS. Thank you for a wonderful day and we look
forward to watching all of the hardwork unfold over the next
few terms.
It was an extremely busy day. House Council addressed the
following:
- Formalising the election procedure for future House
Council (as this is the first house council in existence, we
are looking forward to a substantial increase in the
number of nominations next time and have therefore
formalised the election process).
- Looked at a range of suggestions of modifications to the
current PE shirt to identify their house. A variety of
options will be put to the students in the near future.
- Some great ideas were considered for House Council to
run some activities throughout wellbeing later in term 2.
Mrs J Gentle
SEC Coordinator
Student Wellbeing
We have accomplished quite a lot with a new and revamped
Wellbeing program. Wellbeing groups have created House
Chants which are in the process of being awarded House
Points by the House Council. The groups have also created
their own inspirational sayings that have been laminated and
displayed in their rooms. They have completed Harmony Day
activities and are just completing their House Mascot Designs.
Well done to all staff and students.
Next term our new House Council will lead some activities,
plus we have our annual Pink Stumps day in Week 3. We are
going to check on our friends (RUOK?), as well as building up
resilience amongst us with “Facing our Fears” activities. We
are also going to investigate some problem solving with the
infamous “Egg Drop” returning to our wellbeing groups.
The SEC team throughout the day were looking at a range of
ways to improve opportunities for student voice in the school.
Early term 2 they will be launching some new ideas to allow all
students of Kellyville an opportunity to express their concerns
and / or ideas of improving KHS.
Thanks for all your input and enthusiasm.
Community of Schools - Transition Days
In recent weeks, Kellyville HS has hosted all Year 5 students in
our Community of Schools – from Beaumont Hills, Kellyville
and Sherwood Ridge PS. They participated in activities such as
visual arts, physical education, english, science, photography,
information technology, languages, HSIE, music and drama.
The students learn more about life as a high school student to
better prepare them for a smooth transition to high school.
They had the opportunity to find their way around the high
school environment, as well as developing a positive rapport
with high school staff and students. The days were very
successful, and the students are to be congratulated on their
behaviour, participation and engagement.
The Urban Challenge provides the ultimate real-world
experience to over 3000 school students per year. Small
Teams, each with a teacher and Urban Challenge Guide,
embark on a fast-paced unfolding adventure through Sydney
eat, fibres they use and the environment they live in. The
Archibull Prize engages school students in agricultural and
environmental awareness through art, design, creativity and
teamwork by:
• Providing a blank, life-sized fibreglass cow for students to
create an artwork on or to use as the subject of an artwork
which focuses on the allocated theme.
• Giving each school their own primary (food or fibre)
industry to explore and showcase e.g. Beef, Sheep, Dairy,
Wool, Cotton, and Grains.
• Pairing each school with a Young Farming Champion who
will share their farming journey and work with the
students throughout the duration of the project.
FIRST AID COURSE
Students from Year 11 PDHPE, SLR and Hospitality joined
together for two days to learn a number of techniques
including CPR, bandaging and managing medical emergencies
as a mandatory component of their course.
All had a great time and conducted themselves maturely.
Most importantly, of the students that sat their exam, there
was a 100% success rate in passing and becoming qualified
first aiders. Congratulations to all!! A big thank you to the
instructors from the Royal Life Saving society and to Mr
Sports Update
GIRLS KNOCKOUT BASKETBALL
On Wed 6 th April, the KHS senior basketball team played
Nepean PAHS in the third round of the competition. Kellyville
The girls put in a great effort in their match against Rouse Hill.
Due to injury/illness we were thankful for the help of our last
minute entries to the team!! The first half had our defenders
working hard. Some great teamwork towards the end of the
half led to Emma Clarke scoring to even the match to 1-1.
The second half saw Rouse Hill shine, with 4 goals scored.
Having no subs saw some very tired Kellyville players, however
they never gave up. A big thank you to the year 12 players as it
BILL TURNER CUP / BILL TURNER TROPHY SQUADS
This year marks the first time that KHS has entered both a
Girls and Boys team in the BILL TURNER soccer competitions.
Unfortunately, both teams were defeated when they played
Cherrybrook HS in the first round. Both of these teams should
remain proud of their performances on the day, as they will
form integral parts of our future Wanderers Cup and 2016
Knockout squads. Special mention must go to Samantha J and
Taylor W who played outstanding individual games on the day.
A big thank you to Mr Oguguom and Mr Wanstall for their
UNIFORM & ATTENDANCE
Learning | Excellence | Integrity
At Kellyville HS we have great pride in living up to our core
values. As a PBL school we emphasis student respect, for
themselves, for their peers, and for their school. The following
lists a number of student expectation and processes to enable
our students to live up to these values.
Late Arrivals
All students are expected to have a note explaining the valid
reason for their lateness. Parents are able to contact the office
with an explanation if time is an issue. Those who consistently
fail to provide a reason are breaching school policy and will be
dealt with through the school discipline system.
Early Leavers
Students who have a valid reason for leaving early must
present a note from home before school to receive their early
leavers pass. This note must include the current date, reason,
and a contact number if there are any questions.
Students who present this note later in the day will have their
parents contacted for clarification.
Flexible Start / Finish Times
Years 11 and 12 students who have flexible start/end times
are expected to present themselves to the front office by 9am
(P1) or 10am (P2), to sign in as soon as they arrive. Students
who attempt to leave when they are supposed to be on class
will be dealt with as if they were truanting the lesson.
Attendance
Students are expected to maintain their school attendance
above 85%. At the Principals discretion, students whose
attendance drops below this percentage are flagged as
attendance concerns, and procedures are put in place to help
these students attend school. Severe attendance concerns will
be referred to the Home School Liaison Officer and may result
in prosecution.
Truancy
Failure to attend timetabled lessons is a serious offence and
carries with it severe consequences. Students who truant their
lessons will be interviewed and dealt with as per the school
discipline policy. Consistent breaches of the policy will see
students placed on monitoring programs and given after
school detentions. Severe cases may involve referral to the
Home School Liaison Officer.
Uniform
Our school community endorses and supports that students
should be in full school uniform.
There are a number of specific advantages uniform gives to
students and parents.
1. It provides security in the sense of easily identifying where
students come from should there be an accident. It
certainly allows identification of people who don’t belong
in the school.
2. Economically it presents a better alternative to buying
name brands and the demand to continually upgrade to
the latest trends and fads. It lessens the competition for
brand names that can develop.
3. It promotes a sense of identity, common purpose,
consistency and unity in the daily activities of students.
Wearing it develops pride in achievement and school,
which helps establish the positive culture of the school.
Students need to provide a note with a valid reason before
school in the Front Office to obtain a uniform a pass for the
day. Students out of uniform will be processed through the
school discipline policy. Year 11 and 12 students out of
uniform may be sent home to change.
