World Health Day Every April since 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) brings health awareness to communities across the globe on World Health Day. The WHO is a special agency of the United Nations that is concerned with global health issues and brings to light new research, publications, and often solutions surrounding these issues. In previous years, World Health Day celebrations have brought awareness to important health topics such as blood pressure, aging, food safety, and making hospitals safe in emergency situations. This year, the subject of diabetes will be the main focus. According to the WHO, some 1.5 million deaths were the direct result of diabetes in 2012 across the globe. World Health Day will scale up diabetes prevention, strengthen care for diabetics, and enhance global surveillance. World Health Day is April 7, 2016. Educate yourself on diabetes and how Type 2 Diabetes can often be prevented by visiting www.who.int⁄diabetes. Seniors Qualify for Free Tax Preparation Free tax return preparation assistance is available for qualifying taxpayers, including seniors. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program can help by connecting you with an IRS–certified volunteer who will provide help with your tax preparation and e–filing. To qualify, you must have an annual income of less than $54,000, have a disability, be elderly, and⁄or have limited English– speaking capabilities. Additionally, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) offers help for those 60 years and older. The TCE specializes in questions regarding pensions and retirement– related issues. To find a VITA or TCE site nearest you, please call 800– 906– 9887 or use the online provider locator at http:⁄⁄irs.treasury.gov⁄freetaxprep⁄. Easy Southwest Chicken Stew Cook one 16–oz. jar of salsa verde (green salsa) in a large saucepan over high heat for two minutes. Add two cups of chicken broth, one 15–oz. can of black beans, drained and rinsed, one 15–oz. can of fire–roasted diced tomatoes, 1 tsp. ground cumin, and the meat of one deli rotisserie chicken, shredded. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, to taste, and serve immediately with a dollop of sour cream.
