CEO's Perspective
WELCOME everyone to Round 1 of the
2016 EDFL season.
In AFL circles there has been a lot of
talk in recent weeks about the merits of
Good Friday Football, an initiative that
the AFL has yet to take advantage of.
The appetite amongst EDFL supporters
was clearly evident at the Strathmore
Community Bank Premier Division
match between Keilor and Strathmore
played on Good Friday. The crowd
that attended was the biggest since
this annual fixture commenced. The
match itself was of a high standard with
Strathmore hitting the lead early in the
last quarter, only for Keilor to run away
22-point winners.
The Strathmore Community Bank has
been generous enough to provide all
clubs with an allocation of fixture cards
for the 2016 season. I encourage all
supporters to grab a fixture card from
their club. If you do, you can be in the
running for a $500 saving account with
the Strathmore Community Bank, but
you will need to watch The Local Footy
Show on Channel 31 to see if the unique
number on your card is drawn.
In the 2016 fixture, supporters will notice
some key matchups this season.
In the Strathmore Community Bank
Premier Division, three games have
been scheduled for Sunday 24 April
being West Coburg playing Maribyrnong
Park at Coburg City Oval, Pascoe Vale
hosting Keilor and Avondale Heights
hosting Aberfeldie. The Queens
Birthday weekend will see Airport West
play Avondale Heights on Saturday
11 June in what will be one of only two
EDFL matches played on this day.
In the Essendon Ford Division 1
competition Tullamarine will host
Glenroy in a twilight fixture in Round
1 under lights, with that match to kick
off at 6pm. Glenroy will also host
Westmeadows in their annual ANZAC
Day match to be played on Monday
25 April.
In the Strathmore Community Bank
Division 2 competition Burnside Heights
will host East Sunbury in Round 1 in
a twilight match starting at 5pm, and
Keilor Park will host Roxburgh Park
in a twilight match in Round 3 to be
played on Sunday 24 April starting at
5pm. Jacana will host the now annual
Queens Birthday weekend clash with
East Sunbury on Saturday 11 June.
The Round 2 match between East
Sunbury and Jacana will be played at
Eric Boardman Reserve (home ground
of Sunbury Kangaroos) due to a softball
carnival making their home ground
unavailable on this weekend.
Supporters are also in line for three
rounds of premiership flag unfurling
with Aberfeldie to unfurl their Premier
Division flag in Round 1, Essendon
Doutta Stars to unfurl their Division
1 flag in Round 2 and Hadfield to
unfurl their Division 2 flag in Round 3.
Congratulations to all three clubs on
their 2015 premiership success and as
supporters make sure you get along
to these games to celebrate these
magnificent achievements with
these clubs.
I hope you enjoy the 2016 season in the
Essendon District Football League.
