Architecture

Architecture
Cachoeira is a historic city
which has its roots in the middle of the
sixteenth century. Its location by the
edge of the Paraguaçu River established
the city as an important center
of commerce for the region. Although
they have been significantly worn down
due to misuse and the ravages of time,
the importance of the city can be
seen in its historic buildings. The “Station
of Knowledge” project proposes
the repurposing one of these buildings,
an old train station, as a library
which will provide benefit to the community.
The University of Bahia recently
opened a new campus in the city.

This expansion has spurred
rapid growth in the city and indirectly
resulted in more damage to the aging
buildings. The abandoned train station
sits close to the campus and has been
affected by this activity. The idea of
converting the station into a part of the
campus would help to preserve the history
of the region while also providing
a valuable resource as the city grows.
In order to fit the library within
the shell of the existing building, it is
necessary to construct a second, independently
supported, floor. The library
spaces can be separated into
three categories. First, administrative
offices for those who work in the building.
Second, controlled access areas
including a reading area, the book
stacks, and a computer lab. The third
category consists of public spaces,
starting with an open pathway into
and through the building which connects
it to the surrounding neighborhood,
this also includes the children’s
library, a coffee area, and a mixeduse
activity center. Finally, there will be
a platform for an old train which has
been converted into a mobile library.

Architecture
Wagner is a small rural City in
the center of the state of Bahia which
is intersected by the Utinga River. This
project was conceived as the house
for the city mayor and addressed
the challenge of fitting extensive requirements
into a small property. The
building code of the area prevents
tall buildings to the point that this
whole project was limited to only one
story. The owner’s specific requests
included making the pool area as
private as possible and to designing
the house with many activities outside.

Architecture
Located in the city of Ruy
Barboza, this house was inspired by
modern design. Glass is a prominent
element in this project, which enables
the use of as much sunlight as possible.
Each of the bedrooms on the
second floor has a balcony to enjoy
the beautiful view around the
property, which is located on a hill.
There are two floors in the house,
the first is composed of the social area,
kitchen, and laundry room. The second
floor holds the bedrooms and a small
reading area. The pergola above the
outdoor dinner table protects the users
from the strong sun which is common
in this area of the state. The portico
in front of the house a decorative element
that provides cover for a vehicle
and supports an upper balcony.

The Bank of Brazil (BB) house
was constructed in the 1980’s
to be used by bank workers who
were being relocated from another
city. Considerations needed to
be made both to accommodate
for the new owner’s demands and
for the considerable slope upon
which the house was originally built.
The original layout consisted
of two standard bedrooms, one master
bedroom, a living room, kitchen,
laundry area, and living quarters for
the maid. The new layout will have
two master bedrooms, one standard
bedroom, a living room, TV room, twocar
garage, guest room, pool and a
laundry area. To fit all of these news
spaces it was necessary to build a
new retaining wall to pull the ground
away from the house. A new access
point was created in the lower area
of the property, but the main structure
of the house was not altered.

Ruy Barboza Church
A second project in Ruy Barboza
is located by itself on a plot of
farmland. The intent of the project is to
establish the building as a landmark in
a community that is mostly comprised
of small houses with gabled roofs. At
the same time, the cost of importing
materials was prohibitive due to the
city’s isolated location and this limited
the options available. Specifically, ceramic
tile and ceramic brick were the
only options easily found in the area.
POOL
The shape is derived from
a simple triangle. This basic
geometric form represents
the trinity which is the basis of
most Christian religions. The
internal angles of the shape
were too small as to be useful,
so it was necessary to crop
the corners in order to maximize
the usable space.

The large windows pivot open to allow the wind to cross through the heart of the
church and provide beautiful views of the outdoor landscape. The structure of
the roof was left visible and the bricks surrounding the alter left exposed in order
to convey a rustic feel.

Architecture
This apartment in downtown
Salvador is one example of the cost
of space and how difficult it is to find in
large cities. The goal of this interior design
project was to accommodate a
couple with two children and to make
this small space both comfortable and
functional.
To achieve these goals, the
walls of the kitchen and balcony were
removed to create a larger integrated
space with the living room. Most
of the doors were replaced with sliding
doors and shelves were placed
around the bedrooms to create more
storage space.

Urban Design
Bom Sucesso is a neighborhood
in the city of Mairi in the state
of Bahia. The purpose of this park was
to reclaim a disused plot of land and
transform it into a useful communal area
for a neighborhood which lacks community
space. The 10,548ft² of land
located in a central area make it possible
to provide both a green space
and playground for the use of community
residents. The pergola and gazebo
provide protection from the sun
and the existing trees are preserved.

Youth Park
Youth Park is a set of fields and
equipment along the main avenue of
the city of Mairi that was established in
order to fulfill the desire of the population
for more outdoor spaces which
will encourage the youth of the city to
participate in more outdoor activity.
The site offers more than 6 acres of
land with more than 60 feet of grade
variation. The lack of level ground
presents a challenge in placing the
equipment and planning the drainage
system. The paths and stairs were designed
as to leave as little incline as
possible in order to facilitate the access
for people with reduced mobility.

The park is comprised of large indoor and outdoor multi-use courts along with a dedicated spaces for a volleyball court, skate park, amphitheater, playground,
jogging track, picnic area, and administrative building. The restrooms are located in both the amphitheater and administrative building. The sloped
landscaping facilitates rainwater drainage and provides structural support for the different elevations between the flat areas leaving a need for only a
minimal structural wall.

Architectural Documentation

Rio de Contas is a city in the
South of Bahia that is one of the oldest
historic centers of a region known
as Chapada Diamantina. This set of
buildings was protected by the Institute
of Historical and Artistic Heritage
(Instituto do Patrimonio histórico e Artistico
Nacional) in 1980, which has
kept the area well preserved. The purpose
of this program was to document
information about the city in the form of
images, text, videos, drawing, 3D models,
and panoramas. This information
is collected and made available on
the program’s website www.acervoriodecontas.ufba.br.
The project started
as a graduate student’s final project
from the Graphical Computer Lab
of Applied Architecture and Design
(Laboratório de Computação Grafica
Aplicada a Arquitetura e ao Desenho
– LCAD) and is now being fed by the
general population under the supervision
of that author.

While in school I had the opportunity
to be a part of a research team
producing information about some of
the historical sites in the state of Bahia
in the form of virtual tours. The goal of
this research project was to take pictures
of the preserved areas, convert
them to 360° panoramas, and publish
them as virtual tours. Two of these
places in particular, gave me the opportunity
to present at two different
conferences, the SiGraDi in 2010 and
ARQ. DOC in 2012.

Cachoeira is a city 120km from
the Salvador, the capital and commercial
center of Bahia. A virtual tour was
created of the interior of the Carmo
Church in Cachoeira, and was comprised
of five panoramas: two aspheric
and three cylindrical.

Planned panorama of Church Interior

The Campo Santo is an important
cemetery in Salvador, the capital
of Bahia. Established in 1836, it is still
under normal operation and its collection
of many artistic outdoor monuments
is open to regular visitation. In
addition to the panoramas of this virtual
tour, there are highlighted areas
where you can click to learn more information
about some of the statues in
the cemetery.
