APRIL APRIL 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | ISSUE #42 | #42 FASHION
BY ZEE BATTERSBY
I’m not old i’m
retro
Check out my
fashion website
imnotoldimretro.co.uk
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… Ok so firstly a reminder about
me. I’m Zena (Zee for short) I’m 42, a mother and a grandmother.
Hello you, and hello April!
It’s a great month for me as it’s my birthday…
I turn 43 this year! It’s also my daughter’s
birthday and the beginning of spring. I also
love the crisp mornings and
the sun starting to break
through more frequently. It’s
Perfect weather for hacking
out around the Suffolk
countryside, something I’ve
enjoyed immensely for at least
30 years!
Now is the perfect time to have
a sift through your wardrobe
and get rid of anything that you
haven’t worn for a few years
or more! I did this recently as
we’ve just bought a house and
I have to say it’s very cathartic.
I’m a terrible hoarder and
the complete opposite to my
husband… I think I’m just way
to sentimental. Shoes are easy,
but there are some items I’ve had for years
that I just can’t bear to part with! When it comes
to updating your wardrobe, I find its better to buy
a few high fashion key items each season.
These can be items from the high
street that don’t cost very much, but
ones that you can incorporate into
you existing wardrobe.
I’ve spoken before about adding
coloured tights to summer dresses
to make them last throughout
autumn and the same can be said
for spring.
I have personally never followed a
trend to the letter and could never
be a purist as I get too distracted!
I’m also aware of what suits me
and what I’m most comfortable
in. Anyway enough of my waffle,
here are my favourite fashion trends for spring.
At the moment embroidery is everywhere. I love
the light to dark denim items that are starting to
14

FASHION
appear online at ASOS and BOOHOO.
I found these amazing jeans on ASOS. They are
perfect to wear with a crisp white shirt and some
chunky shoes or brogues. If you’re not brave
enough then why not try accessorizing instead.
This gorgeous little bag is from TOPSHOP and is
real leather.
Another big trend for spring is the prairie look.
I’m avoiding this look with a barge pole because
unless you are six foot tall and shaped like an
ironing board, you will run the risk of looking like
Edina from ABFAB!!! It’s not one of my favourites
but again a shawl and shirt may be forgiven just
don’t go the whole Hogg.
Whatever you have planned over April enjoy it. If
you have any fashion shows, collection launches
or events you would like me to cover please get
in touch I’d love to hear from you.
Stay stylish - Love Zee x
I’m not old i’m retro
www.imnotoldimretro.wordpress.com
Women of a certain age will remember back
in the 80’s designer Katherine Hammnet
commissioned a range of slogan t-shirts for
charities and to make political, environmental
and humanitarian statement. This medium has
never gone away and my most recent purchase is
from a newly set up charity called “the women’s
genealogical fund” their “lady garden” campaign
is the first of many I expect, and is aimed at
ovarian and cervical cancers. The t shirts are
available from Topshop at £28. It’s a cause very
close to myself, and my family so I’m wearing
mine with pride.
I’m still filling my diary for the next few months
and my first, in a series of interviews, is almost
finished. Page 3 and playboy icon Kathy Lloyd
met me for an interview. She talks to me about
life after page three and playboy, marriage,
motherhood and why she wouldn’t want her
daughter Lola to follow her into the glamourmodelling
world.
I have to say she is lovely. I’m also meeting Sinnita
which should b great fun. My blog is aimed at a
broad cross section of amazing women from all
walks of life I’m not ruling anyone out. I’ve always
believed women should lift each other up and
be empowered. Everyone has a story to tell. My
husband says I’m good at it because I’m nosey!! I
have no idea what he means.
T-shirts are the staple to everyone’s
wardrobe.
TIPS & ADVICE THIS SEASON
THE PERFECT
fit
Whether you’re using them as part of a layered
look or going for classical simple style a tee is
the foundation of your look which is why it is so
important to find the right fit.
Most high-streets offer a “basics” range making it
easy to pick up replacements when needed.
There are so many different fits and styles to
choose from so I’ve detailed some of these for
you this month in preparation for the Spring/
Summer season…
Before even looking at styles you need to make
sure you’re getting the right fit.
BY DANIEL FRANCIS
This means avoiding both extremes or too baggy
and too tight. You want comfortably snug without
too much excess space.
In terms of the seams you want to think in the
16

APRIL APRIL 2016 2016 | | ISSUE | ISSUE #42 | #42 FASHION
FASHION
same way as you would when trying
on a suit. The shoulder seams should
line up with your shoulders (sounds
obvious right?). Your t-shirt should
also sit on your hips.
Scoop neck
t-shirt
Although there are several extra-long styles on
the market these are quite clearly different sizes
to the usual style.
Finally you need to look at the sleeve length
however this is the area I would suggest most up
for personal opinion and how comfortable you
are with your arms. I would say though, make
sure these, like the rest of the tee, aren’t excessive
baggy.
T-shirt collars make can make a big difference to
the overall look.
Traditionally you’ll be choosing between a crew
(typical rounded collar) and a V neck (be wary of
the an overly deep “Simon Cowell” look no matter
how good you think your chest looks). A short
tight V looks much better but do elongate your
shape.
Alongside these you’ll find scooped lines; a looser,
lower rounded, which create a much more relaxed
vibe, as well as the revived “granddad” collar
which have a bit more structure around the neck
and usually between two – four buttons down the
front.
These often come with additional details such as
highlight colours and are also great for layering
under shirts. Try on each of these styles in store
and you’ll soon find the one you best prefer.
If you’re looking to cover all bases and have a
t-shirt for every outfit you want to have white,
black, grey and navy coloured options.
Even better, a couple in each of these colours.
Anything on top of that is down to personal
preference and / or your colouring. I will say that
green is in this season.
Hawstead Church & The Suffolk Barn Hawstead
Real bride Natasha chose Angelic Weddings to create her
Invitations and some of her venue stationery for her big day
back in June.
Cornflower blue, floral country garden chic with a bird theme
was just stunning against the back drop of a quaint Suffolk
village church and rustic Suffolk barn.
Natasha chose ivory card, blue floral print, bird cage die cuts
and cornflower blue satin ribbon. Deluxe wallet style invitations
with inserts and matching RSVP cards along with venue
WILL YOUNG
BOUNCE INTERVIEW WITH RACHEL DUCKER
After an afternoon of racing, Will
Young is set to headline at this years
Newmarket Nights on Friday 24 th
June 2016. The date will also mark
the beginning of celebrations for
Newmarket Racecourses in their
landmark 350 th year as The Home of
Horseracing.
Will Young’s debut single ‘Evergreen/
Anything Is Possible’ is included in the
bestselling singles of all time in the
UK, having sold over 1.7million copies
alone. His 6th studio album ‘85% Proof’
arrived at the top of the charts in 2015
(making this fourth No.1 album), and
represents his most accomplished work
to date, cementing Will’s status as both
a national icon and artistic powerhouse.
Bounce Editor Rachel Ducker, caught
up personally with Will for an exclusive
interview.
Q: Back to the start, how did it feel to be
the first to person to win ‘Pop Idol’ back
in 2002?
My gosh, I guess in terms of the first
person, I definitely have a sense of
pride in that as I feel like myself and the
contestants were an integral part of Pop
Idol, and then in terms of winning the
show, doing the show, being on it I loved
it, every minute.
Q: What was your best experience about
the show?
My best experience was singing, as I’d
never sung on a microphone, so just to
sing on a microphone was just, the best
thing ever.
Q: How did this differ to ‘World Idol’ as
this must have been on a much larger
scale?
Oh World Idol was s**t! It was one of my
only regrets, it was the worst thing I’ve
ever done.
Well at least you are honest about it…
I was honest on the night! I kept on
pretending to fall asleep… it was so awful!
Q: Previous to this you did try out for
another boy band audition though?
What happened?
Yeah at the time it was very exciting, I
mean it didn’t last very long, it was all a
bit crap actually, they promised things
that didn’t actually happen.
Q: Was this the first time you met Simon
Cowell?
Yeah, yeah terrific to meet him!
Q: You became quite well known to the
public after you stood up for yourself
and the other contestants to Simon
Cowell during Pop Idol.
That must have taken some guts! ...
FEATURE
Um yeah, I’ve been raised to stand up
to bullies, that’s really from my parents,
and actually weirdly looking at my family,
especially my dads side, my great, great
grandfathers and their sons freed slaves
and did a lot for the good of people so I
think its in my DNA really?
Q: But you did it in such a polite way?
Well, I just think you can fight rudeness
with rudeness and I’m talking generally,
as I don’t like honing in on that one event,
it was so long ago. I try to be as polite as
possible, whilst being as firm as possible.
Being polite doesn’t mean that you’re a
push over, like sometimes people might
come up to me and I might be in the
middle of lunch or something and I will
just be very polite but very firm.
Q: You participate in a lot of work for
various charities. What has inspired you
to help the charities and what are they?
Well, Women’s Aid came about as I did
one of my dissertations on Domestic
Violence. Mencap, as I wanted to do
something for young people and I think
education is so important, so helping
young people with learning difficulties
seemed the right fit. Catch 22 is a young
charity helping disadvantaged kids and
there is also the Dog Foundation, which
is the second biggest dog charity in the
world now, based in Thailand.
Q: One of your releases ‘What the world
needs now’ was to help raise awareness
of our declining wildlife population,
which I think is brilliant how did this
come about?
WWF came to me and asked if I wanted
to do it, it only took two days of my time
and of course I was going to do it.
Q: Do you feel you can make more of a
difference by using your profile?
Oh yeah, one hundred percent, I think
it’s a responsibility, but before it’s a
responsibility, it’s a desire, by me really.
I would be doing it if I wasn’t famous,
the great thing is I think with my politics
degree, I like to have informed debates
and sometimes they get a bit firey!
Q: How would you deal with any
negative comments towards you?
I don’t find it hard, for several reasons.
I think everyone’s entitled to their own
opinions, however if someone wants to
give them its up to them. If someone
wants to generate debate, I think that’s
a great thing, and I also will react to how
the opinion is given, so if it is given in an
adult and appropriate way, then great,
I am happy to talk to anyone, but if it is
in a threatening way, then I am just not
interested my life is too short you know.
Q: Your tour kicks off pretty soon and
your stopping at Newmarket this year,
have you ever been to Newmarket
Races?
Yeah, I’ve done it before! I’m not great at
choosing winners, it’s a complete fluke,
but I always get a place at least, so I am
definitely going to be placing a bet.
Q: What can we expect on the night from
you?
Oh gosh, I’m so excited, it’s a completely
different night to the tour, which is
terrifying my tour manager, there’s quite
a few outfits, its going to be a really,
really fun show and its going to go quite
disco as the lights go down. I have just
chosen all my outfits, which are a mixture
of charity shop buys and then designer
buys, but all I’m going to say is that I am
customizing a vehicle for the occasion!
Oh an exclusive right here! ...
Q: So I have a few readers’ questions for
you if that’s ok Will. All of your music
videos are different, what was your
favourite one to film and why?
I loved working with my friend on ‘All
time love’, ‘Let it go’, ‘Like a river’ and
‘Brave man’ – we come from a very similar
place artistically, we like to do stuff that
actually tells something about the world,
I am always very proud of that, but I think
maybe its sometimes to my detriment
and maybe I should do more of a fluffy
video!
Q: After appearing on ‘Celebrity Bake
Off’, what was your favourite bake and
why? Is it true you almost poisoned
Mary Berry?
That is true, but they cut that from the
show! Um, the Tomato Soup Cup Cakes I
think its an untapped market, I don’t think
I’ve got the bake quite right but I think
when I do I could be the new Delia Smith.
Q: I hear you were keen on sports before
you got into music and wanted to feature
in the Olympics? How did you get on
with the Sports Relief synchronized
swimming?
Yes… I am one of those people who still
believes if I train hard enough I could
be in the Olypmics one day, ha ha,
so funny! The syncronized swimming
was absolutely brilliant and one of the
highlights of my life. To learn a sport like
that, its just amazing. I love swimming,
I love dancing and I love doing things
in teams, so to be a part of a team is
brilliant. It’s very relaxing but at the same
time as being very taxing, its like pilates
in water!
Q: If you could hear one song for the
rest of your life, which one out of these
two would it be Gareth Gates ‘unchained
melody’ or Gareth Gates ‘Spirit in the
sky’?
Unchained Melody.
Q: You presented ‘Perspectives: Rene
Magritte. What is your favourite piece of
art in the world and why?
My favourite isn’t actually a Magritte
painting, its Frescoes of the Good and
Bad Government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti,
which I studied at university and its in
Sienna. I went to see it and it just blew my
mind, I mean if only I knew more about
art, it depicts democracy and done in the
1600’s is just mind blowing. I think every
Politian should see it, oh its just beautiful!
Q: Lastly, I have recently partnered with
a brilliant artisan coffee company, called
Paddy & Scotts, the team would love to
know if you like coffee, if so how do you
like it?
I’m drinking one at the moment! Uh, I
think I prefer the milk rather than the
coffee itself, the best coffee I ever had
was in Zanzibar, just rich and uh, just
amazing. To be honest it’s all about the
cigarette with the coffee for me!
Its great you are so honest WIll!
We don’t have to live in fear, and in the
pop industry people are very scared. I
think its very important to know ourselves
and I think when we know ourselves
we’re not so scared about how we are
perceived as it doesn’t really matter.
Will you come to the gig at Newmarket?
I hope to, looking forward to it Will
EXERCISE
for everyone
ENJOY A WORKOUT THAT TONES THE WHOLE BODY
Are you looking for a safe and
effective workout that is fun,
sociable and brings speedy results?
Give NORDIC WALKING a try.
Everyone knows that walking is good for you
and we are constantly being told to ditch the
car to travel by foot, take the stairs instead
of the lift, park furthers away from the
shops, etc...
With Nordic Walking, you’ll be on your way to
results faster than you think, too.
The use of the poles makes the walking feel
easier but actually propels you and makes you
lighter on your feet.
You will find you can walk faster and further
than usual and soon notice the improvements
in posture, muscle tone and weight/inch loss
too - what’s NOT to LOVE about that!!!!
Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary
walking — it makes something we learn to do
as babies... twice as effective!
It is a specific fitness technique and is not to
be confused with trekking, hill walking or trail
running.
If you want to get into shape, boost health or
just get active.
Nordic walking is a simple way to exercise
the whole body and can be easily fitted
into a hectic lifestyle as it provides effective
calorie burning, tones the arms and legs
and improves posture. It’s also great for
stress, easy on the joints and beneficial for
conditions like osteoporosis.
Nordic Walking can be done by anybody,
anywhere and does not require expensive kit.
Become a
Shedder...
AT THE HALESWORTH MEN’S SHED
APRIL 2016 APRIL | ISSUE 2016 #42 | ISSUE | HEALTH #42 & WELLBEING
Halesworth Men’s Shed exists to
encourage people from all walks of
life and all parts of the community
and have a good time together
sharing experiences, skills and
learning in ‘The Shed’, following the
original principles of an idea which
started in Australia.
A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical
man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels
at home and pursues practical interests with a
high degree of autonomy.
The idea is to offer this to a group of such men
where members share the tools and resources
they need to work on projects of their own
choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly
and inclusive venue.
They are places of skill-sharing and informal
learning, of individual pursuits and community
projects, of purpose, achievement and social
interaction. A place of leisure where men come
together to work.
The Halesworth Men’s Shed was formed early in
2014 and in April 2015 and joined forces with the
Halesworth Volunteer Centre.
In June 2015 they moved into their spacious
premises, close to the town centre, behind
Chinny’s car park, 27 Norwich Road. This has
been totally refurbished and fitted out as a
workshop and leisure area.
All are welcome to join with no financial
obligation. The idea is to come when you can,
make what you want, have a chat, mend what
is broken, contribute what you can and share
experiences.
Although Sheds mostly attract older men,
some have included men of any age, women
and young people. Whichever activities are
pursued the essence of a Shed is not a building,
which some don’t have, but the network of
relationships between the members.
To become a ‘Shedder’, you can pop along to
see if you like it, have a cuppa and speak to the
other members. If you want to join, then you
can, in fact it is as easy as pie.
The aim is to make the Shed as free as possible
by funding it through donations, sales and grants.
Shedders donate what they can afford.
All members have skills and experiences and
in the Shed they try to harness them for the
common good, encouraging everyone to share
and contribute what they can from their own
capabilities and interests and enjoy each others
company in a safe environment.
This generates a lively learning and sharing vitality,
that the shedders thrive on, enabling the growth of
the Shed in the community.
“I have been with Halesworth shed from its start
last year. I had only just moved into the area, and
have made many new friends through the Shed.
I believe the Shed movement is very important
indeed, as getting older for men (and women)
is in many ways about managing loss:- Loss of
job through retirement or redundancy, loss of
identity and status can accompany this, loss of
the health and vigour that once perhaps could
be relied upon, loss of mental agility goes hand
in hand with this, loss of a life partner through
bereavement or divorce. I have experienced more
than one of these in the past few years, and having
the opportunity to meet other guys who have had
to deal with these sort of issues too has been a
great help.
The discussion of these experiences, even if only
in light conversation, I’m sure will be increasingly
beneficial to the membership’s wellbeing”.
- John D
Activities include woodworking, wood turning,
model making, chatting and drinking tea and coffee.
The team hope to extend to metalworking,
computer electronics and other practical pastimes,
as well as making and repairing items to sell. These
have included planters made from recycled timber
for sale in street fairs and to local businesses.
Contact The Halesworth Men Shed via their email
address – halesworthmensshed@gmail.com or visit
on Wednesday or Thursday between 10am and
2pm or Saturday from 10am to noon.
FOOD & DRINK
Wines
the Loire Valley
This area in France has produced wine since Roman times in 1 AD.
By the 11th Century Sancerre had achieved a reputation across
Europe as a high quality wine. Indeed by the Middle Ages it was
valued higher than Bordeaux.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
Not only is the region famous for its wines but
the preponderance of beautiful Chateaux attracts
many visitors.
For a river over 1000 km long there a vast range of
wine styles available. From its position at Nantes
at the Atlantic it winds past Angers, Tours and
Orleans before diving south and almost reaching
the Mediterranean Sea.
The Climate
As a result of this the climate is varied. At its most
easterly Sancerre has a cool continental climate
while downstream at Anjou and Nantes the
climate is affected by the Atlantic influence.
Varied climates, soils, vine growing techniques
and winemaking lead to a great variation in the
resultant wines. One major problem they have to
deal with are frosts which can destroy a vineyard
crop and in 1991 almost the whole harvest that
year was lost.
The Region
Historically it has been divided into 4 basic areas.
Nantais, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine and the Central
Vineyards which include Sancerre.
Nantais
The Muscadet grape here is the most common
and shares its name with the name of the area.
It produces 3 main wines. Muscadet plain and
simple, Muscadet de Sevre et Main, the vineyards
FOOD & DRINK
specifically near the two rivers of those names,
and Muscadet de Sevre et Main sur Lie, where
the wine is left in barrel for a time to pick up the
yeastiness from the sediment. The capital of the
area is Nantes.
Anjou-Saumur
A humid climate a bit further from the Atlantic,
with limestone, chalk, tufa and schist sub-soils.
Touraine
At 200 Km from the Atlantic there is less
influence from that source. The soil tufa, like in
Anjou-Saumur is in many vineyards.
The red wine area includes Chinon and Bourgueil
which use the Cabernet Franc grape. To the east
lie Vouvray using the Chenin Blanc grape for
producing Dry
The Chenin Blanc is the main white grape and
produces dry, medium and sweet wines.
The dessert wines from this region are very long
lived, the best being Quarts de Chaume which
can live for 50 years or more.
Medium and Sweet wines as well as Sparkling.
On the opposite bank of the river lies Montlouis
which produce similar wines to Vouvray but
cheaper. Dry whites are produced from the
Sauvignon Blanc grape and would be entitled
Sauvignon de Touraine.
The Cabernet Franc grape produces
red and rose wines, the best Rose
being Cabernet D’Anjou. Rose
D’Anjou is made from the lower
quality Grolleau grape.
The Gamay grape normally
found in Beaujolais also grows
here producing fresh and juicy
wines. The area of Saumur has a
high proportion of Sparkling wines
from the Chenin Blanc grape which often
are compared to Champagne in quality, indeed
many Champagne houses have wineries there.
Also a little Gamay grape wine is made and
would be entitled Gamay de Touraine.
Tufa is also found here. The capital of
this area is Tours.
Central Vineyards
The most famous wine form here
is Sancerre. With chalky, stony soils
the most commonly known grape is
also the Sauvignon Blanc, a dry wine
with strong Herby, gooseberry flavours and
smells and high acidity. Lesser known is the fact
that a red and a rose wine is produced from the
Pinot Noir grape mostly grown in Burgundy.
Elsewhere in Saumur Dry whites from Chenin
Blanc and the red Saumur-Champigny from the
Cabernet Franc grape. The soil here is often Tufa
which is a chalky limestone which is very porous
allowing good root growth. The main city here is
Angers.
Other wines include the Pouilly Fume from the
same grape and Reuilly and Quincy. Nearby is
Menetou Salon with Kimmeridge Clay as the subsoil.
This is the same soil as in Chablis which gives
this wine another dimension. The main town here
is Sancerre.
Conclusions...
An attractive area to visit, having a large selection of wine styles. The other attraction
to this area is the predominance of Chateaux. Every main town or sub-region has one
together with associated vineyards. The tombs of Henry 2nd , Eleanor of Aquitaine and the
Black Prince are there as well as much history connected to this country.
A Great Healthy Bake-Off
at Woolpit...
On Saturday 21 May, Woolpit Complementary will be hosting a Good Health
Spring Fair. A free event intended to bring the community of Woolpit and
surrounding villages together to learn about good health, local up and
coming artists, caterers and various organisations.
using gluten and dairy free ingredients and where
possible, additional credit to those who have devised
clean eating recipes that avoid ingredients such as
refined sugars or products that oppose ethical or moral
principles.
There are 4 categories, subdivided to include a clean
eating category. A panel of guest judges will vote
for best in category on 3 merits – taste, texture and
presentation.
It will be an opportunity for people to learn more about
complementary healthcare treatments via reduced rate
sessions as well as free consultation and assessment.
For those of us that have
encountered food allergies or
intolerances, will appreciate the
difficulties in adapting to new
ingredients
What’s more, for those that have undergone a
total change in diet, to accommodate the ever
growing Clean Eating principles – the notion
of baking can often send an anxious shudder
down ones spine.
This competition is designed to highlight
terrific recipes and fabulously skilled bakers,
“The day will obviously be focused on how Woolpit
Complementary intends to help the community but it
is also a fantastic opportunity to give more to the local
area and those that support natural, like-minded and
artistic models in business or as an organisation.” Says
Emma Harvey Lawrence, Partner and General Manager.
“I have been practicing Acupuncture long enough to
know that it’s about the patient as much as it is about
the practice, so this will be a great opportunity to show
just how much complementary healthcare has to offer
and how the approach can differ, yet complement,
conventional healthcare providers.” Adds Michaela
Harvey Lawrence (nee Storer), Partner and Clinical
Manager.
2 steps
TO BRUNCH
It could’t be
any easier!
BY RUBY REED
Now by 2 steps, I mean 2
ingredients.
Welcome to simplicity and
good taste! I do not claim to
be a genius in the kitchen,
but with these two easy
ideas you don’t have to be
to create a quirky brunch for
the perfect lazy day.
Give them a try!
Banana & Egg Pancakes
These perfect energy
boosters are literally just
banana and egg.
That’s all you need!
One egg and 2 bananas to be exact. They are
a great healthy option as they are packed with
protein and low in calories.
If you’re interested they are also gluten and dairy
free. Achieve them in minutes:
• Crack 2 eggs & whisk in a jug
• Peel & mash 1 banana
• Add the whisked eggs to your banana paste &
mix
• Add oil to your pan, ready to fry your mixture
These measures should make four mini pancakes,
each taking around 6 minutes with that allimportant
flip at 3 minutes. As a finishing touch
52

FOOD & DRINK
APRIL 2016 APRIL | ISSUE 2016 | #42 ISSUE | FOOD #42 & DRINK
you may want to add a
topping. Honey worked
for me! But what about a
strawberry?
Bacon & Egg Cups
Again, just 2 ingredients
needed, this time- bacon
and eggs. Your quantities
will depend on how many
you want to make. One
egg and one streak/rasher
of bacon make each cup.
Preparation is even easier
than last:
• Use a muffin tray &
mould a piece of bacon
into each place, creating
your cup
• Crack your egg and pour
into the cup
• Place in a preheated oven at 350
degrees F.
These should start to look ready at
around the 12 minute mark, but of
course this depends on how crispy you
like your bacon.
Both recipes (if they are long enough to
call that!) are fast, easy and yummy. A
great and surprisingly filling way to kick
off the day!
Hope you like them...
Feel free to sprinkle some seasoning on
the egg centre i.e. black pepper.
BEST OF THE BEST AT
THE
BILDESTON
CROWN
After a busy week, finally Friday
had arrived and we were excited
about what was to come.
We jumped in the car and ventured across the
Suffolk countryside on a crisp spring evening, and
I have to say what a great feeling it was.
Passing through the old wool towns of Lavenham
and Hadleigh we arrive at Bildeston.
Our destination, The Bildeston Crown, a trendy
yet traditional village local painted out in bold
colours, stunning murals and lined with original
timber frames.
This original 15th century coaching inn has been
imaginatively refurbished to say the least.
Owners, Hayley and Chris ran the Crown for
ten years, and decided to move on to a new
challenge.
After an offer they couldn’t refuse from the
previous owner, they decided to call it home once
more and returned to the Crown to restore it to
its shining glory, and that they certainly have.
56

FOOD FOOD & DRINK DRINK
Throughout the building all the lovely timber
frames, original beams, and an inglenook
fireplace survives, however the interiors are
decorated in dark bold colours, stripped
floorboards, amazing sofas (which my partner
fell in love with) and a mixture of contemporary
and traditional art on the walls. Our kind
of place!
We were taken up to our room by one of the
lovely team members, who made sure we had
everything we needed to rest comfortably.
She went out of her way to make us feel
very welcome.
Other rooms include a roll top bath, and one even
has a four-poster bed.
After a short rest I was starting to get a little
peckish, however I have to admit I was a little
on the slow side getting ready for dinner (I am
a woman after all). I sent my partner Sam down
to the bar for a pre-drink so he wouldn’t get too
restless!
Little did I know he would be hard to find, had he
got lost in one of the many rooms? No he was in
the courtyard enjoying a rum and ginger beer in the
fresh air.
The bedrooms are extremely interesting;
an oversized bed grabbed my attention
immediately, overlooking a beamed wall,
complete with a fixed flat screen TV and
seating area to relax in.
After joining him we headed back to the bar and
met Hayley, whilst sipping on a few cocktails and
browsing the menu.
What a menu we were presented with.
57

APRIL 2016 APRIL | ISSUE 2016 #42 | ISSUE | FOOD #42 & DRINK
We were then shown to the dining room, where
we presented with four hand made freshly-baked
rolls with butter.
We devour them instantly and the best part is, I
cannot wait for what is to come.
The menu offers a ‘Classic’ menu or a ‘Select’
menu and you can choose between the two.
In-between the bread and the starter, we were
also served a pre-starter of Pumpkin soup,
which was delicious! I like the little touches The
Bildeston Crown offered and the personal service
we received from Hayley herself.
For my main course I could not resist the sound
of the Red Poll cheese burger, with truffle mayo,
salad & fries, which turned out to be one of the
most delicious burgers I had eaten in ages!
After having much trouble deciding I went for The
Bildeston Crown “All day breakfast” for my starter
whilst Sam had the Quail Kiev, burnt onion puree
& roasted plums. The dishes are so interesting,
which I think makes all the difference when you
are trying to stand out.
Sam on the other hand went all out with the
Roasted loin of Suffolk Venison with morels,
wild garlic & crones. I know this must have been
amazing as usually he lets me have a bite.
He did comment that it was incredibly tender
and flavourful. As the food was perfectly timed and
spaced (it is hard to believe) but we managed to
find room for dessert!
to again soon.
Sam (the big chocolate lover,) went for the
Chocolate Fondant with Chocolate ice cream, whilst
I opted for something a little more refreshing with
the Glazed lemon tart, marinated segments and
lemon sorbet. It was just superb!
There was no room for anything further so after
finishing our wine by the fire we headed up to bed.
After a wonderful sleep and a healthy breakfast it
was time to wish The Bildeston Crown goodbye,
however it wont be goodbye for long as it is
definitely somewhere we want to venture back
Giant Scotch
APRIL 2016
Eggs
| ISSUE #42
With all the chocolate egg eating that has been going on recently I thought it
might be a good idea to offer an alternative. So here we have some super giant
scotch eggs! We have used goose eggs as we really wanted to make a meal of
it! Taken from Oliver’s Kitchen - Seconds this is one of my favorites!
Right, now this recipe I will be honest is
not an exact science! We had not made
scotch eggs before with big old goose eggs
so we kind of guessed as we went!
First we hard boiled the eggs which
probably took about 12 minutes! it seemed
forever!
Whilst these
were boiling
I asked a big
person to fry off
the bacon until
nice and crispy.
Bacon goes so
well with eggs!
Then when the
bacon is done we
finely chopped it
up. By this time
the eggs were
ready so we
drained them
and let them cool
in cold water.
After peeling the shells off the eggs
it is time to prepare the sausage
meaty part. For this we need to mix the
sausage meat up with the thyme, parsley
and chopped onion along with some good
seasoning of salt and pepper.
Divide the sausage meat mixture into 2 and
make them into rough oval shapes. Then
add a small heap of the chopped bacon.
Add the flour to a bowl and season with salt
and pepper. Then dip the eggs into it and
pop them on top of the pile of bacon.
Now we wrap the sausage meat around
the egg making sure that the whole egg
is covered and nice and smooth - It is like a
meaty shell for the egg!
Now that we have a pair of meaty eggs we
need to brush them with beaten egg and
roll them around in the breadcrumbs. Make
sure you get them completely covered so
keep rolling them around and around!
Once they are all crumby it is time to
get that big person who is on standby
to pop them
into a preheated
oven
(180°c) for
about 35
minutes until
they are
beautifully
g o l d e n
brown.
Both of the
‘Oliver’s
Kitchen’ cook
books have
been created
to encourage
parents to
cook with
their children
whilst raising
awareness
of childhood
stroke, a
subject very
close to our
family.
All proceeds for the books are split between
the Stroke Association and the West Suffolk
Hospital Charity so we would encourage you
to show your support whilst cooking some
to be carried out against every adult who will be living at the
property as their main residence, regardless of whether they are
named on a tenancy/lodging agreement or not. For example,
the immigration status of all adult children must be checked.
These checks have to be carried out before they are allowed to
move in.
To ascertain a tenant’s immigration status, Landlords are obliged
to see original documentation that proves their right to remain in
the UK. Copies of these documents must be retained by the
Landlord for a minimum of twelve months after the tenancy has
come to an end or the occupier has left. The type of
documentation that proves an individual’s right to remain in the
UK includes a UK passport, EEA Identity card and a Residence
card. A full list can be found at www.gov.uk.
If a tenant asserts they are entitled to remain in the UK but for
some reason the documentation is not available, an online check
of a person’s status can be made via the Home Office website.
In the event that a person only has a temporary right to remain
in the UK, Landlords must diarise the expiry date and carry out
further checks to ensure the tenant’s right to remain in the UK
has not lapsed. If a tenant stays in occupation after their right to
remain in the UK has lapsed, Landlords are legally obliged to
report the individual to the Home Office.
Heidi Berry specialist in
all aspects of Landlord
and Tenant law.
As part of the clampdown against illegal immigration,
private Landlords throughout England now have to
conduct “right to rent” checks against their
tenants. Landlords who fail to do so can be fined up to
£3,000 per tenant and Landlords who persistently fail to
conduct right to rent checks can be prosecuted under the
criminal law.
The changes were introduced courtesy of the Immigration Act 2014 and
took effect from 1st February 2016. Under the legislation, only people
with the right to stay in the UK are permitted to rent.
Whilst it is not currently necessary to check existing occupiers, Landlords
(or their agents if the responsibility has been passed to them) do need to
check new tenants and lodgers over the age of 18 years. Checks have
67
Given that Landlords also need to comply with discrimination
laws under the Equality Act 2010, it is advisable that all
applicants are taken through the same tenant verification and
selection process.
Whilst it is too early to assess the impact of the legislation, it is
clear that private Landlords are facing an increasing legislative
burden and the uninformed amongst them could be taught a
very expensive lesson.
Day Camps
If you’ve ever been to camp, you’ll
know that having a go at new
adventure activities such as archery,
quad biking, climbing and kayaking is
not only super fun and exciting, but
did you ever consider the other, longer
lasting benefits that being at camp can
offer a child.
Here are our top benefits for children spending
even just a day at camp:
1. Developing emotional and social skills
At camp, children learn to be away from familiar
environments such as home or school, meeting
new people and have the opportunity to make
their own decisions in regards to the activities
they want to participate in during the day.
2. Unplug from technology
It’s really difficult to navigate a climbing wall with
an iPhone in hand, so at camp, there is usually
a ‘leave it at home’ mantra. Being away from
technology allows children to rediscover the great
outdoors, be creative and get lots of fresh air!
3. Trying new things
Activity camps offer just that, lots of activities
– from archery to climbing and bush craft to
kayaking, these may be unknown but by trying
something new, children can find hobbies and
interests outside of the norm!
4. Friendship building and resilience
Being at camp means that children have the
opportunity to make friends with others that
they wouldn’t meet otherwise. Not only that, by
participating in different activities throughout the
day, these friendships are bonded through shared
experiences.
5. Mental stimulation & physical activity
Many activities at camp have a problem solving
or team-building element to them, so not only
are the children physically active in an outside
environment, they are also cognitively active!
6. Independence & empowerment
Children given the opportunity to do something
on their own, gives them great empowerment.
Daily passports used to record their camp
experience are very often used for school show
and tells, which gives each child great ownership
of their experience.
7. Confidence reinforced through
success
Achieving something new at camp makes
children feel good, reinforced by awards for effort
and achievement allow a child’s confidence to
develop.
8. Happy parents
Children sleep well after a day at camp, what’s
more, camps fit around a parent’s working day
perfectly, with the ability to drop off early and
pick up late with lunch included; spending the
day at camp takes the stress off!
Established for 30 years, Xplore run activity
day camps for children aged six to 14 during
the school holidays throughout Suffolk.
SHADES OF GREY
SPONSORED BY CABELLO, HALESWORTH
Grey seems to be the colour everyone
is talking about at the moment
alongside the launch of Fifty Shades
of Grey.
So here at Cabello, we thought we’d show you how to
make the most of this understated tone.
1. WEARABLE GREY HAIR
The grey hair trend has been creeping further and further
in to the limelight over the last few months. With
celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Rihanna sporting
a luscious grey dip dye recently; it is a more versatile
shade than you first think. This neutral colour could
compliment any outfit, but if you’re not brave enough
to rock the full silver hair shade, try mixing up the tone
with pink and blue hues.
Thought grey hair was just for your granny? Think
again! Read on for our tips on how to rock grey hair
and make-up.
2. A COOL CONTOUR
If you have a pale complexion and dream of the ‘Kim
Kardashian contour’, you may find brown tones are
78

HAIR & BEAUTY
a little too harsh against your skin tone.
Try to create those sculpted cheekbones
with a grey or cool taupe shade instead.
Using these cooler more neutral tones will
sit more naturally against your skin and
create that natural cheekbone shadow effect
you desire. Balance it out with a pop
of blush in a coral shade on the apples of
your cheeks and a touch of highlighter
across the top of your cheek bones.
3. NAIL THE GREY TREND
The simplest way to switch up your
beauty style without going to extremes is
by simply popping on a fresh coat of nail
varnish! From the pale pleasures of Butter
London’s Lady Muck nail varnish, to the
deeper depths of Deborah Lippmann
Stormy Weather; there’s a shade for any
occasion. Not feeling glamorous enough?
Add a glitter top coat to really make the
colour pop!
4. PLAY WITH TEXTURES
Grey is a versatile colour, coming in many
tones and hues, its way more than just
the dull tone we initially associate with rainy days! If
you’re going for a grey eye shadow for example, think
about the texture. Do you want a matte finish as a base
for a touch of bright colour, or will you go for one with
a decedent silver glitter running through to add
some sparkle to your day? Grey toned make up
is a versatile option, and even acts as a great
base of contrast against bright red lips too!
So go ahead, play around with some
shades of grey and release yourself from
the constraints of your normal beauty
routine!
Spring Bright’s!... At SK Clinic + Spa
April is the perfect month to add a
splash of colour and brighten up your
skincare regime and beauty favourites!
To help achieve a fresh and glowing complexion,
the Pevonia Luminous C & Sea Facial is the one to
try. Exclusively available at SK, it blends Vitamin
C with the latest high-tech formulation of freezedried
Seaweed and Squalane Oil, which is perfect
for reducing fine lines, strengthening elasticity and
providing relief for dull, sun-damaged skin.
Using a refreshing lift-off mask skin is renewed,
firmed and left extremely smooth.
It’s easily done, but try not to forget those
eyebrows. Keeping them neat and regularly tinted
frames the face, lifts the eye area and for such a
small change, it makes the biggest difference.
At SK we have a lover affair with OPI, and the
recently launched New Orleans Collection is a huge
hit.
producing the most gorgeous designs, it will most
certainly brighten up your day.
I recently got my hands on the bareMinerals
READY® Color Boost - The Stolen Heart compact
which is a limited edition in an elegant gold
compact with mirror. It features 2 luminous peach
colours, one dark one lighter, giving a beautiful
glow across the cheeks, but has some serious skinnourishing
benefits too.
Flattering all skin tones and featuring nourishing
kiwi and grape seed oils along with algae extract,
make sure to get yours soon. Even in April, the
sun’s rays are strong. Be smart and make sure you
achieve a glowing bronzed body without exposing
it to harmful UV Rays. SK’s answer to safe sun is the
Fake Bake professional spray tan.
With fast and even results, the UK’s leading salon
professional self-tan not only gives a healthy
realistic tan, but is also
excellent at giving the appearance of a
slimmer physique.
With 12 new bold feminine colours, this vibrant
collection features hot reds, raspberry crèmes,
warm oranges, smooth greens and china Blue
colours, which will add the finishing touch to a fresh
new look. Plus, with our new nail technician
Adding a full body
exfoliation will not
only smooth the skin,
but will prolong
the results.
So I’ve told you how amazing it is; now to tell you
why.
For skin care normally you would go into a shop
and decide which products would be most
likely to suit your skin, with this you go onto the
website or app and fill in a quick questionnaire
about what your skin is like, what your needs
are even down to if you want your cream to be
perfumed or not.
This sleek machine contains your serum, day
cream and night cream.
In the morning the machine will give you your
serum and then day cream;
in the evening it will give you your serum and
night cream, in the right quantities, simple, easy
and all in one sexy machine.
other Nu Skin product and where to get them
“Venus Viva is the next
generation in skin resurfacing
and remodelling”
This technology is proven to effectively tighten
skin, improve texture, and correct pigmentation,
rosacea, scarring and stretch marks. Sara Esler
skincare specialist at Daydreams Bury St.
Edmunds can confirm this as can many clients.
The Viva delivers so much more than standard
radio frequency. The Viva is really versatile and
parameters can be adjusted to vary the degree
of resurfacing and/or collagen production and
tightening. Treatment plans are specific to each
client and intensity of energy can be increased
during a course of treatment. 3 -5 treatments
being recommended.
2016 sees Daydreams working increasingly with
Venus Viva on stretch marks and scars alongside
the facial treatments. Significant results on the
‘mummy tummy’. As Roxanne mother of twins
said “I didn’t believe there could be such a
Spring is finally here and has
brought plenty of exciting new
interior styles with it, and what
better way to celebrate the end of
winter than to refresh and update
our homes with some of this
season’s top trends?
Gorgeous grey
Beautifully complemented by other
neutral tones, or on-trend blue and silver,
grey looks fantastic when used on walls
or featured in home accessories, and is a
striking colour choice for furniture.
Retro revival
Interiors will get a blast from the past
in spring with attentions turning to
retro style furniture and design.
We particularly love the use of grey in
bedrooms as it is a wonderfully calming
colour, especially when paired with crisp
white bedding and minimalist accessories.
Cream is a great alternative to grey and
will be another of the top colours this
spring. We love to pair cream with oak for
a fresh, classic contemporary look.
We think that spring is the perfect
time to start adding retro inspired
style to your home; it is definitely
the season for funky designs, bright
colours and bold patterns.Plus, with
contemporary pieces set to appear
SUNSHINE AND SHOWERS
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : Take cuttings of your
favourite conifers.
Spring is finally in evidence as
daffodils and flowering trees start
to bloom.
Expect the inevitable April showers this month
but with sunny days too, when you can turn your
attention to the lawn.
It’s an exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds
well into growth, and it’s also time to start sowing
outdoors. Just watch out for frosts...
Deadhead daffodils and narcissi; give them a liquid
feed or a sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them
die down. Don’t cut off the leaves as they are
necessary to replenish the bulb for next year.
Keep deadheading spring bedding to keep it looking
neat, and to encourage new flowers.
Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to
grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering
with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and
vegetable patch and containers.
Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths,
terraces and drives.
Make new beds and borders - mark the shape with
sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer
of growing vegetation and dig the ground over,
incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If
you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf – if
you dig it in the buried grass will regrow.
For those who frequent
Facebook have you seen the
‘we love Bury St Edmunds’
page?
I love looking at all the
old photos, pictures and
drawings of different places
round our beautiful town.
It’s quite interesting to see how the town, despite
having a shopping centre built, and different
businesses that have come and gone, the ‘guts’
of the town hasn’t changed that much from 200
years ago to 10 years ago. I think it’s great that
people who live here genuinely love the town and
its surrounding areas, because it is a great place
and we are very lucky to live here.
It would seem that people feel the same
about where they spend their hard earned
money. THIS YEAR WE CELEBRATE 135
YEARS OF BEING A BUSINESS IN BURY! We are as much of the history of this town as Copeland
Interiors has been a family concern since 1881 passed down generation to generation. I have only owned
the business for 10 years, before that my father had it for 31 years; the last Mr Copeland had it for 48
years, his father 26 years, and so on. I really feel a responsibility to this business and to the history and
memory of all the past incumbents. While it has got so much harder to survive as a small business,
people still want to deal with you because not only are you good at what you do and give that extra
personnel service they want to be part of the history too!
I think that this is the reason too that many long term names survive, for example in our business the
name of William Morris and his designs have
survived centuries and are still as popular
as they were then as are other names like
Liberty, Colefax & Fowler to name but a
few, and every year they bring out more
amazing fabrics and wallpapers, sometimes
completely new ideas and sometimes a
revisit to the archives to rediscover old
favourites.
So we carry on loving what we do and caring
what we do, creating, hopefully more history
in our beloved town of Bury st Edmunds!
Hosted by our good friends at Explore
treated to bacon rolls and hot beverages
(all part of the package) always the perfect
start to an action filled day.
We were then driven by Land Rover across
never fired a shotgun before and by the
end of the session everyone had hit a clay.
With 30 clays each (again all covered
in the cost of the package with the
equipment and ammunition, no hidden
charges here) we took it in turns with 10
clays on each station, one coming towards
you, one away from you and another
across you.
Each trap had a degree of difficulty but
again the instructors were on hand to help
with guidance of where to aim, shoot and
any corrections if required.
Great fun was had by all especially when
filled with the immense satisfaction and
pride of seeing a clay burst into a thousand
pieces mid-flight on a successful shot.
Perhaps quite worryingly it was maths
teacher Chris who took the title of the
day’s best shooter and following a post
shoot beer and debriefing back at the
Elveden Inn planning soon began for a
rematch.
qualified instructors and 3 trap sites.
Once we had the all-important safety
briefing we were kitted up with ear
defenders and goggles, the traps were
demonstrated to the group so we knew
where to point and then we were briefed
on gun handling so we knew how to point.
SPORT
workmanlike performances, the grit, determination,
never-say-die and always giving everything
approach.
A DISMAL DEFEAT MEANS THE
PRESSURE IS OFF, SO PLEASE
START ENTERTAINING THE FANS...
Being someone who spends a
bit too long on social media,
Twitter is a pretty good
barometer to determine the
mood among the Super Blues.
Just 24 hours after losing
at home to relegationthreatened
Rotherham, it is
fair to say the storm clouds
are circling IP1.
But there comes a time when that’s not enough.
If Ipswich aren’t going to push for automatic
promotion, and the lack of investment suggests that
is unlikely to happen in the near future, then let us
at least be entertained. I am privileged enough not
to have to pay for my ticket, and sitting in the press
box is not something I take for granted.
But I currently wouldn’t pay to watch Ipswich play
regularly and I certainly wouldn’t feel the utmost
desire to take my two young sons to watch them
and lose around £100 for the ‘privilege’.
So where do Ipswich go from here?
Questions will always be asked
about owner Marcus Evans but
more and more, on social media at
least, are now pointing fingers at
Mick McCarthy.
A few days previous, Daryl
Murphy had celebrated
his birthday with a brace
against Blackburn.
Hope may not have
sprung completely but
maybe, just maybe. In truth, that
performance, and too many others before it,
had been dismal.
Murphy’s double had merely papered over the
cracks. Ipswich have largely had a poor 2016
and the Rotherham defeat had been coming.
The problem isn’t just a shock defeat or the
sight of public enemy Neil Warnock cooing
over three points.
It is quite simply the standard of the
performance. One of my favourite Twitter
quotes from a fan was, to paraphrase, ‘winning
ugly is ok. But when you lose, it is just plain
ugly’.And ugly is a pretty apt description at
the minute. We can all sit here and praise the
And these aren’t simply keyboard
warriors. They are loyal fans who
know enough about football, and
spend enough money, to have an
informed opinion.
The natives are restless and they
have every reason to be. Should McCarthy remain or
are fans getting a bit tired of him, as the manager
suggested in his frank post-match assessment of the
Rotherham defeat?
I’m not sure. Mick can win everyone back with a
few results and a few brighter, more entertaining,
performances.
I wrote last month that Ipswich’s promotion fate
would probably be sealed in March with a difficult
run-in during April. That seems to have come true –
but not in the positive way I had hoped.
So now is surely the time to relax and entertain. Or
risk even more fans turning.
INSPIRE ME
Suzanne &
Robert Cook
sponsored by Abbeycroft Leisure
Twelve months ago, Suzanne
Cook was referred to the gym
team with back problems.
Having not used the gym before, and
admittedly at a low level of fitness, Suzanne
was apprehensive about making a start. For
moral support, her husband Robert came
along to her first few appointments and soon
after joined himself.
The couple stated coming to the gym
together as routine and soon started to enjoy
their workouts. Robert says; “When Suzanne
got referred, I wanted to help her out and
provide support. You have to put yourself out
there and the whole team at the gym have
been so supportive - you can really have a
laugh with them”. And soon the couple where
shifting the pounds as well as increasing
fitness levels.
Having lost almost six stone between them,
Robert and Suzanne from Cloverfields,
Thurston try to be pragmatic when it comes
to eating sensibly. They allow themselves a
treat bit always return to the gym to make
sure they work off what they’ve indulged.
Suzanne is now pain free in her back
and has not looked back since starting
her fitness journey. “I now run or walk to
work on occasion which is five miles”. She
explains, “Previously, I couldn’t even bike
it”. Concentrating on her fitness has given
Suzanne a hobby which she’s not had before,
“it’s nice for me now to meet new people”, she
confesses.
Meanwhile, Robert is loving his
gym workouts.
By working
together and
working hard
to change their
fitness and
eating habits,
Suzanne and
Robert have a
new lease of life.
The
Best Man...
West End showcase
for local writers...
Two local songwriters
recently had their songs
performed in a fundraising
showcase in London by a
host of West End stars.
Ian Cook and Ian Newton,
both members of the
Beccles based Waveney
Light Opera Group, were the
writers of a musical comedy
entitled “The Reunion” which
the group performed in
2013. The show was a great
success and went on to win
a national award, the NODA
President’s Cup.
coming up in May. One of the songs from the show
was chosen to be performed in “Snappy Title -
Making History”, a show organised by the New
Musicals Network.
The show took place at the Pheasantry in the King’s
Road and featured performers and musicians from
the West End.
The two Ian’s song was performed by Martin Neely
and Alice Fearn both of whom have starred in
major West End shows including Les Miserable and
Phantom of the Opera.
The two Ian’s have just completed work on a new
musical comedy entitled The Best Man, which
WLOG will be performing April 26th - 30th at
Beccles Public Hall. Tickets are available from
www.becclespublichall.org.uk or for more info go
to www.thebestmanmusical.co.uk
Subsequently the show was
licensed by NODA and has
been performed by various
amateur groups in England,
Scotland and Wales, with
a performance by New
Taverham players in Norfolk
THEATRE
ROYAL
BY NICKI DIXON
April will be a busy month at the
Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds with
drama, comedy, music and murder!
Kicking off the month is the theatre’s
co-production with The Original Theatre
Company, Invincible. (30 March to 2 April)
It tells of London couple, Emily and Oliver,
who downsize and move to a small town
in the north of England and meet new
neighbours, Dawn and Alan.
Over the course of a disastrous evening of olives,
anchovies, Karl Marx and abstract arts; class and
culture collide.
The brilliant full mask theatre company, Vamos
return after their visit with Nursing Lives last year
to present The Best Thing on 5 April. It’s 1966 and
for 17-year-old Susan, life is an adventure waiting
to begin. But what happens next turns everything
upside down, and its repercussions will last for
decades to come.
Children will enjoy the ever-popular tale of Puss In
Boots on 6 April. Would you trust a talking cat?
You never know, he might turn you from a pauper
to a prince just like the hero of this story which is
brought to life on an incredible sloping stage by
Patrick Lynch from CBeebies.
There’s an international feel to the stage on 7 April
with the Best of BE Festival. Three head spinning
shows from across Europe are brought together to
celebrate the Birmingham European Festival.
On April 8 at 2pmeveryone’s favourite sisters, Ana
and Elsa, star on screen in Sing-a-long-a Frozen.
This will be a full screening of the smash hit Disney
film complete with lyrics so the audience can sign
along to such tunes as Let It Go and Love Is An Open
Door.
At 7.30pm on the same day there is Sing-a-long-a
Dirty Dancing, again a full screening of the movie
featuring songs such as She’s Like The Wind, Hungry
Eyes and (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.
Further into the month (13 to 16 April) The theatre
welcomes students from LAMDA who will perform A
Midsummer Night’s Dream. This is the chance to see
the theatre stars of the future as they take on one of
Shakespeare’s best-loved plays.
And who better to round off April than Agatha
Christie’s Miss Marple in A Murder Is Announced. (19
to 23 April).
The residents of Chipping Cleghorn are astonished to
read an advert in the local newspaper announcing a
murder will take place at Little Paddocks, the home
of Letitia Blacklock. Starring Judy Cornwell (Keeping
Up Appearances) and Diane Fletcher (House of
Cards).
#21
BY JACK STEVENS
MUSIC
This month, we catch up with East
Anglian worksmiths Cabrakid ahead
of their headline slot at Norwich’s
Waterfront. High Priest Cabrakan and
Allergy Kid wax lyrical about their
return…
Hi, Cabrakid. You’re headlining the Waterfront
Studio on 26th March in Norwich, after a
well-received gig there late last year – for
any newcomers, what can you expect from a
Cabrakid live performance?
“We like to bring the maximum amount of energy
we can to any shows we play. I guess you could
say there’s an element of unpredictability as well
as mid set we will change things up, play new
songs or mess with old ones. Collaboration is
another massive part of our live show any time
we can get more people on stage and see what
happens we will jump at. I’d say we mainly just go
into every show thinking, let’s have a laugh and
rip the place apart.”
There’s a real underlying feel for Madvillain and
Dalek rooted in your sound – what are your main
musical influences when it comes to Cabrakid,
and are those fair comparisons?
“Our main influences are people like J Dilla, King
Krule, Loyle Carner and Jessie James Solomun.
It’s a real mixed bag of conventional hip hop
and newer more electronic sounds. Madvillain
and Dalek are good comparisons too. There’s
certainly a lot of focus on authenticity and raw
subjects coupled with tight and beautifully
constructed instrumentals from Gabriel.”
Where do you feel Spoken Word and Hip Hop
is at nowadays in the East of England – should
there be a call for it to have a wider reach and
higher place to find its audience?
“Spoken word in the east is still relatively
unknown. The first time I heard Luke Peter
Foster’s work I went absolutely mad as he’s a
fellow East Anglian looking towards the spoken
word flow over beats. He’ll be playing with us on
the 26th and I really hope people see what we’re
doing and get involved. The hip hop scene in
general round here is mad though so many artists
that people need to get involved with.”
And lastly, what topics and issues do you feel
mostly translate into your lyrics – what would be
the overall message from Cabrakid?
“What I choose to write about falls mainly into
two, rather large categories, the first is love.
Losing it and having it and everything in-between.
The second is politics. I like to think as a group we
are socially aware and want to spread a message
of love and happiness to people that listen to us.
So I guess our overall message would be along
the lines of, be nice to one another and question
things that you see our wrong.”
See you next month - Jack
Crufts
CATCH UP...
Last month we interviewed Susan
Crowley about her prize winning
Chihuahuas. I caught up with Susan for
a quick Q&A about how it went, after
two of her nine Chihuahuas, qualified
for this years Crufts.
Along with her husband Shaun, Susan and her
team headed up to the NEC for this years show.
the A14 was closed as the river had burst its
banks.
This led to a 70 mile detour meaning we were
delayed and arrived late.
I ran in as Laurents Junior dog class had started!
He was straight on the table, but very shell
shocked, poor chap, but did his bit, though sadly
he was not placed
Q: On the build up to Crufts what how much did
you have to prepare?
Dolly and Laurent went to ringcraft to train up for
Crufts, we also train in town to get used to noise
and bustle. They were bathed, nails cut and filed.
Q: What happened next?
Dolly had a few hours to get her mood together.
The ring was enormous, which is just what she
likes, as she walks at a fast pace!
Q: How did you feel when you turned up at
Crufts?
We set off from Beccles at 5am, but unfortunately
The final line up was pulled out and we were in
it. I had to walk again for our lady judge, who
placed her 5 and awarded her VHC, very highly
commended.
Q: Did you feel nervous putting your dogs in the spotlight
after all of this hard work?
I was very nervous but Dolly seemed calm as she loves to
show!
For more information visit
East Coast Chihuahua KC
Reg on Facebook.
Q: What categories did you enter?
The class was ‘Post Graduate Bitch’ and there were 13 entries.
Q: How did it feel to receive a prize?
We were over the moon to be placed in such a strong class of
top dogs.
Q: What will you be aiming for next?
I hope next year I can again qualify a dog and get placed, it’s
a great thing just to get there.
Archie’s
Adventures
WILD AT HEART...
It’s been a pretty adventurous month
for me...
Firstly, I set off on my doggy travels with my
mum, for a stay at The Westleton Crown.
They let little four legged friends like us stay too.
The room was wicked, a studio with two floors
and full of treats for me. I even got my own
blanket for snoozing time.
I had dinner in the restaurant like a big boy and
even managed to source a few scraps too! Uff.
The staff were really nice to me too!
me, funny little things. The best thing has
happened! Now they are allowed to go outside,
which means I have playmates.
OK, OK! So I know we got off to a bad start but
my favourite time of the day is when I get to
chase them around. Ha ha!
Glad the spring is here, with the lighter nights it
will mean more walkies and trips to the beach!
If you have any suggestions of dog friendly
places please let me know. You can tweet me or
follow me - Twitter @bouncearchie.
Then I went for a hair cut… I’d let myself go a
tad if I’m honest, so I was taken to ‘Posh Paws’
in Framlingham (AKA Fram). The gals there are
lovely and speak to me while they wash me and
cut my nails.
I felt like a new pup after all that pampering; I’d
highly recommend it.
When I got home the kittens didn’t recognize
