Nainital is the popular hill station in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, situated
at an altitude of 6,837 ft above the sea level. It is a pear – shaped lake, surrounded
by mountains, of which the highest are Naina on the north, Deopatha in the west,
Ayarpatha in the south. The magnificent scene can be captured from the highest
peak of the vast plain of the south.
It has a mythological story, according to that, when Lord Shiva was passing from
here to carry the charred body of deity Sati (Parvati) her Nain (eyes) was fell here
and it is a belief in Hindu mythology that, wherever the charred body limbs were
falling on the earth that formed 64 shakti peeths and that place are worshiped till
now. So that, Nain (eyes) spots a lake called Nainital or the lake and Goddess
Shakti is worshipped at Naina Devi Temple at the north shore of the present day
lake. There are more storeys are told by the people. This temple is situated on a hill
top; you can reach there via road with curve rounds of the hill up to certain points
and then concrete steps. Cable cars are also available there to reach on the top.
The hills overlooked the Gobind Sagar Lake which is created by Bhakra – Nagal
Dam. Looking it from the top is such a magnificent view; you can stay there and feel
the cool winds with open arms.

Besides the goddess Shakti’s story, there is also one story that connects with Skanda
Puran, a Hindu scripture, it’s worth mention by the name Tririshi Sarovar and the
three rishis or sages are among the great sages of an earlier age – Atri, Pulaha and
Pulastya. These rishis meditate and dug holes which soon get filled with water.
Besides these mythologies, the lake was found in 1839 by P. Barron a sugar trader.
This is a centre of attraction, encircled by the beautiful high mountains. The
mountains are crown of this lake which explores its beauty more. You can explore
the lake boating, which is available at very low cost.
If you are an adventurous person you should take a trekking trip to Naina peak, it
is 8579 ft above from the sea level, and 6 km away from Mallital. You will pass
Naina peak by surrounding deodars and cypress on the road. You can reach by
pony, but you like walk here if you are enthusiastic, don’t forget to bring a picnic
basket because there is no restaurant or cafe on the top. The Naina Devi temple and
mountains of the Tibetans border can be viewed from the top.
After trekking on Naina peak there is one more scenic destination for you Snow
View can be reached by the road but ropeway is best to reach.

It is situated at an altitude of 2,270 m, offers a beautiful view of snowcapped
mountains like Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Kot, Nainital Lake and the town.
There are some temples located on the top. The most beautiful and energising view
can be captured in the early morning. There you can take photographs, tea, and
snacks. This place gives you excellent view.
After the Snow View Point next is Dorthy Seat situated 2292 m above the sea level
on Ayarpatha hill. It was by the British Army officer Col. J. P. Kellet in the memory to
his wife Dorthy Kellet, an English artist. She died from septicaemia aboard a ship
bound from England with her four children Elizabeth, Joan, Barbara and Richard. She
was buried in the sea The Red Sea in 1936. He built this place after her wife’s death.
Later on, the Tiffin Point named by the people who often come here for picnic. It is
a nice picnic spot as well as it also gives a fantastic view from the top.
After these sightseeing destinations there is Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo,
Nainital is situated from the 2,100 to 2,150 meters above the sea level and between
Shivalik and Himalayan mountain ranges.

It has a vast collection of endangered animals like snow leopard, Tibetan wolf,
sambar, leopard cat and Himalayan bear. It also has a vast collection of high altitude
birds, like kalij pheasant, Lady Amherst pheasant, rose ringed parakeet, golden
pheasant and red junglefowl. These are dangerous animals although they attract you
by doing such small things that catch your attraction.
There is an amusement park near the zoo where you take ride like bungee jumping,
flying fox, bumping car etc. it will make you crazy.
The next destination is Gurney House was built in 1881 located near Nainital
Lake. It was the residence of the hunter – conservationist and writer Jim Corbett, his
sister, Miss Margaret Winifred Corbett, sold this house in 1997 when they left for
Kenya. Now this house is holding by the heir of Mr. Sharda Prasad Varma (who buy
the house in 1947), Nilanjan Dalmia. The cottage was constructed (1880) by the
dismantle material of their earlier home which was Alma hill.
