Na<strong>in</strong>ital is the popular hill station <strong>in</strong> the Indian state of Uttarakhand, situated<br />

at an altitude of 6,837 ft above the sea level. It is a pear <strong>–</strong> shaped lake, surrounded<br />

by mounta<strong>in</strong>s, of which the highest are Na<strong>in</strong>a on the north, Deopatha <strong>in</strong> the west,<br />

Ayarpatha <strong>in</strong> the south. The magnificent scene can be captured from the highest<br />

peak of the vast pla<strong>in</strong> of the south.<br />

It has a mythological story, ac<strong>co</strong>rd<strong>in</strong>g to that, when Lord Shiva was pass<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

here to carry the charred body of deity Sati (Parvati) her Na<strong>in</strong> (eyes) was fell here<br />

and it is a belief <strong>in</strong> H<strong>in</strong>du mythology that, wherever the charred body limbs were<br />

fall<strong>in</strong>g on the earth that formed 64 shakti peeths and that place are worshiped till<br />

now. So that, Na<strong>in</strong> (eyes) spots a lake called Na<strong>in</strong>ital or the lake and Goddess<br />

Shakti is worshipped at Na<strong>in</strong>a Devi Temple at the north shore of the present day<br />

lake. There are more storeys are told by the people. This temple is situated on a hill<br />

top; you can reach there via road with curve rounds of the hill up to certa<strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

and then <strong>co</strong>ncrete steps. Cable cars are also available there to reach on the top.<br />

The hills overlooked the Gob<strong>in</strong>d Sagar Lake which is created by Bhakra <strong>–</strong> Nagal<br />

Dam. Look<strong>in</strong>g it from the top is such a magnificent view; you can stay there and feel<br />

the <strong>co</strong>ol w<strong>in</strong>ds with open arms.


Besides the goddess Shakti’s story, there is also one story that <strong>co</strong>nnects with Skanda<br />

Puran, a H<strong>in</strong>du scripture, it’s worth mention by the name Tririshi Sarovar and the<br />

three rishis or sages are among the great sages of an earlier age <strong>–</strong> Atri, Pulaha and<br />

Pulastya. These rishis meditate and dug holes which soon get filled with water.<br />

Besides these mythologies, the lake was found <strong>in</strong> 1839 by P. Barron a sugar trader.<br />

This is a centre of attraction, encircled by the beautiful high mounta<strong>in</strong>s. The<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s are crown of this lake which explores its beauty more. You can explore<br />

the lake boat<strong>in</strong>g, which is available at very low <strong>co</strong>st.<br />

If you are an adventurous person you should take a trekk<strong>in</strong>g trip to Na<strong>in</strong>a peak, it<br />

is 8579 ft above from the sea level, and 6 km away from Mallital. You will pass<br />

Na<strong>in</strong>a peak by surround<strong>in</strong>g deodars and cypress on the road. You can reach by<br />

pony, but you like walk here if you are enthusiastic, don’t forget to br<strong>in</strong>g a picnic<br />

basket because there is no restaurant or cafe on the top. The Na<strong>in</strong>a Devi temple and<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s of the Tibetans border can be viewed from the top.<br />

After trekk<strong>in</strong>g on Na<strong>in</strong>a peak there is one more scenic dest<strong>in</strong>ation for you Snow<br />

View can be reached by the road but ropeway is best to reach.


It is situated at an altitude of 2,270 m, offers a beautiful view of snowcapped<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s like Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Kot, Na<strong>in</strong>ital Lake and the town.<br />

There are some temples located on the top. The most beautiful and energis<strong>in</strong>g view<br />

can be captured <strong>in</strong> the early morn<strong>in</strong>g. There you can take photographs, tea, and<br />

snacks. This place gives you excellent view.<br />

After the Snow View Po<strong>in</strong>t next is Dorthy Seat situated 2292 m above the sea level<br />

on Ayarpatha hill. It was by the British Army officer Col. J. P. Kellet <strong>in</strong> the memory to<br />

his wife Dorthy Kellet, an English artist. She died from septicaemia aboard a ship<br />

bound from England with her four children Elizabeth, Joan, Barbara and Richard. She<br />

was buried <strong>in</strong> the sea The Red Sea <strong>in</strong> 1936. He built this place after her wife’s death.<br />

Later on, the Tiff<strong>in</strong> Po<strong>in</strong>t named by the people who often <strong>co</strong>me here for picnic. It is<br />

a nice picnic spot as well as it also gives a fantastic view from the top.<br />

After these sightsee<strong>in</strong>g dest<strong>in</strong>ations there is Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo,<br />

Na<strong>in</strong>ital is situated from the 2,100 to 2,150 meters above the sea level and between<br />

Shivalik and Himalayan mounta<strong>in</strong> ranges.


It has a vast <strong>co</strong>llection of endangered animals like snow leopard, Tibetan wolf,<br />

sambar, leopard cat and Himalayan bear. It also has a vast <strong>co</strong>llection of high altitude<br />

birds, like kalij pheasant, Lady Amherst pheasant, rose r<strong>in</strong>ged parakeet, golden<br />

pheasant and red junglefowl. These are dangerous animals although they attract you<br />

by do<strong>in</strong>g such small th<strong>in</strong>gs that catch your attraction.<br />

There is an amusement park near the zoo where you take ride like bungee jump<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

fly<strong>in</strong>g fox, bump<strong>in</strong>g car etc. it will make you crazy.<br />

The next dest<strong>in</strong>ation is Gurney House was built <strong>in</strong> 1881 located near Na<strong>in</strong>ital<br />

Lake. It was the residence of the hunter <strong>–</strong> <strong>co</strong>nservationist and writer Jim Corbett, his<br />

sister, Miss Margaret W<strong>in</strong>ifred Corbett, sold this house <strong>in</strong> 1997 when they left for<br />

Kenya. Now this house is hold<strong>in</strong>g by the heir of Mr. Sharda Prasad Varma (who buy<br />

the house <strong>in</strong> 1947), Nilanjan Dalmia. The <strong>co</strong>ttage was <strong>co</strong>nstructed (1880) by the<br />

dismantle material of their earlier home which was Alma hill.<br />

You can visit the best places <strong>in</strong> Na<strong>in</strong>ital <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter with amaz<strong>in</strong>g snowfalls. It is<br />
