Part 1: In the blank after each sentence, identify the underlined word as either an adjective<br />

(ADJ), predicate adjective (PA), predicate nominative (PN), or adverb (ADV).<br />

1. Beside the table Tom read quietly under the lamp light. _______<br />

2. He sleepily fell in<strong>to</strong> a dream about a holiday parade. _______<br />

3. The fountain at the park is full of coins. _______<br />

4. The boys in blue were the winners of the <strong>to</strong>urnament. _______<br />

5. Soon the police arrived on the scene. _______<br />

6. During the winter I become very cranky. _______<br />

Part 2: Complete “The Routine” for each sentence below, AND write ADV over each adverb.<br />

Each sentence has one adverb.<br />

First, surround prepositional phrases with parentheses.<br />

Second, mark the verb(s) with a box (action verb) or an “L” shape (linking verb).<br />

Third, circle the subject(s).<br />

Then and only then, identify adverbs.<br />

7. Tom’s very silvery spandex shirt has been sparkling in the sun.<br />

8. He and his small son were already filled with disappointment.<br />

9. In tears, the little girl tugged softly on her mother’s dress.<br />

10. From the horizon the sun came up and brightened the room.<br />
