The Hunt for Adverbs A. What’s most difficult about adverbs is that an adverb’s location in a sentence doesn’t follow any kind of pattern. B. For instance, so far we’ve seen that nouns and pronouns can be subjects, objects of prepositions, and predicate nominatives (PN’s). Each of these things is found in certain areas of a sentence: • subjects toward the beginning • o.p.’s at the end of prepositional phrases • and predicate nominatives after linking verbs C. So when you’re looking for nouns and pronouns, you have an idea of where they can be found. D. The locations of verbs, adjectives, and Predicate Adjectives (PA’s) are also pretty consistent. • Verbs are predictably found toward the middle of a sentence • Adjectives are typically right next to the words they describe • Predicate Adjectives are always after linking verbs E. Adverbs aren’t so predictable. Below, look again at the sentences we were working with. The adverbs are all over the place! Yesterday we rode our bikes to the park. The Pearsons will be building a house here in the fall. David gently rocked the baby. They will be arriving very soon. F.
