11. In a quiet backyard in the <strong>to</strong>wn of Chester, three boys played a<br />

12. game of kickball. Mike was up first. “Roll a nice, slow one <strong>to</strong> me,” he<br />

13. called out <strong>to</strong> the pitcher.<br />

14. “If you kick one <strong>to</strong> Dennis or I, you’re a dead duck!” said Richie,<br />

15. who was pitching. Richie turned and whispered <strong>to</strong> Dennis, “Move over<br />

16. <strong>to</strong> the left. We’ll nail him if he goes for second base.” Dennis was<br />

17. moving over when, at that moment, Mike stroked a ball between Richie<br />

18. and he. Dennis chased it <strong>to</strong> the fence. “Throw it <strong>to</strong> me!” yelled Richie.<br />

19. Mike rounded first base and wondered <strong>to</strong> himself if he could<br />

20. beat Dennis’s throw <strong>to</strong> second base. Mike’s eyes widened as Dennis<br />

21. released a laser through the hot summer air <strong>to</strong>ward him, Richie, and<br />

22. second base, but it was rising and the ball whizzed completely over the<br />

23. heads of Richie and he. Mike raced for third base.<br />

24. “If Richie and I lose,” thought Dennis, “I’ll be really upset with<br />

25. myself.” Racing for the loose ball, Richie grabbed it, whirled and,<br />

26. falling away, whipped it at Mike. Thwack!<br />

27. “I’ll get you for this, Richie,” said Mike as he examined the welt<br />

28. developing on his leg, for his furious race around the bases had<br />

29. suddenly ended just inches from home plate!<br />
