Scholar Zone The English alphabet we use today was influenced by an ancient alphabet called the “Runic” alphabet. The Runic alphabet was invented in the northern regions of Europe long before the English language was born. Below, under each Runic letter is the letter you know that matches the sound represented by the Runic letter. Do you see any similarities between Runic and Modern English letters? Pronoun Basics A. Pronouns are a close cousin to nouns. Pronouns are alternate words we use for people, places, things, and ideas. For instance, in place of the nouns Joe and Mary, you might instead simply use the pronoun they. Instead of saying the noun box, you could use the pronoun it. B. As you can see, although pronouns are used for the same kinds of things as nouns (people, places, things, and ideas), pronouns are not as specific as nouns. C. One reason pronouns exist, however, is to provide us some variety. D. Here’s what a world without pronouns might sound like: “Bob and Mabel were married after Bob got out of the Navy. Bob flew Navy jets. Bob was 18 when Bob met Mabel, but Bob didn’t have the courage to ask Mabel to marry Bob until Bob turned 25, so Bob and Mabel dated for over seven years before Bob and Mabel got married.” With pronouns you can refer to someone named Bob as he or him or someone named Mabel as she or her once in a while instead of saying their specific names all of the time.
