Can you imagine a world without writing?
For most of human history there was no writing at all! No books, no magazines, no notes, no letters. Nada, zilch,
zero. If only you’d lived 10,000 years ago… Wow, those were the days—NO ESSAY WRITING!! Bummer for
you.
English is actually one of the newest written languages.
The first “modern” humans were on earth at least 30,000 years ago. The first time human beings began writing
anything down was about 6000 years ago, but the English language was born only about 1500 years ago.
Do you know how to make a timeline? If so, try finishing the one below! On the extreme left, mark the
approximate beginning of human history. On the extreme right, mark the current year. In between, mark
the beginning of writing and the beginning of the English language. Also mark any other historical
events you know.
