says Lonati. “We fundraise our
builds confidence in the kids. In
fact, says Lonati, “I believe public
speaking should be a requirement
in high school, because it’s
becoming a lost art.”
Professional musicians also
Rehearsals for the show
started in January.
“In January, it’s not everybody
every day,” says Lonati, “One
day it will be just the ensemble
learning the pieces. One day
it will be the leads singing. But
eventually it is four days a week
fro everybody when we get closer
to the show.”
These rehearsals, to Lonati,
are “the best part of high school
theatre.”
“It’s very social for the kids.
They end up forming a little
family. I watch friendships grow.
They have so much fun together.
It’s a happy part of my day, being
at rehearsals with these kids.”
It’s not all about work, says
Lonati.
“I want them to play. That’s
what it is. That’s why we go into
it. If it’s not fun, there’s no point
in doing it,” she says.
Big Y Celebrates 80 Years with Make-A-Wish MA & RI Fundraiser
By J.D. O’Gara
Last month, Big Y kicked off
its 80th Birthday with a storewide
fundraiser aimed at improving
the lives of children benefitting
from Make-A-Wish Massachusetts
and Rhode Island. Franklin
wish kids Caeden and Devin
Parici, students at Oak Street
Elementary, and their parents
attended the kickoff, along with
representatives of Big Y and
Make-A-Wish MA & RI.
“We love to partner with the
community we serve and love to
partner with our customers It’s a
great way to honor 80 years in
business and also look forward
to the future. Our company’s
motto is ‘we’re better together’,”
says Charles D’Amour, President
and COO of Big Y Foods, Inc.
The goal of the effort was to
raise $150,000 throughout the
63 store locations for the organization,
one D’Amour chose not
only because he’s known Bob
Paglia, Chairman of Make-A-
Wish Massachusetts and Rhode
Island since the 1990s, but also
because the organization falls in
line with one of his company’s
goals, which is to have a meaningful
impact on children in the Caeden’s wish to go to Disney
Caeden and Devin both have
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy,
a fatal type of Muscular
mainly boys, are lacking the protein
dystrophin. This leads to
Caeden’s Mom, Kirsten, says
that his genetic condition was
first detected by a first-grade
teacher, who noticed that the
boy used Gower’s Maneuver,
a labored way of rising that
indicates weak hip and thigh
muscles, when he’d get up from
circle time. Neurological tests
confirmed the disease, and since
siblings have a 50/50 chance of
the same diagnosis, Devin was
also tested and came back with
positive test results.
April Happenings at the Franklin Historical Museum
Item of the Month
The April item featured in the Museum’s
ongoing Item of the Month series is a Native
American Stone Knife from our collection.
There is a lot to be learned about how Native
Americans in this area used stone tools to
create axes, grinding tools, etc. to shape their
environment and live off the land. The knife,
a general purpose tool, with both a tapering
point and a thick edge, demonstrates the
highly advanced workmanship and ingenuity
of the local Wampanoag tribe.
The research and exhibit is put together by
Justin Edwards, a Dean College history major
and a student of American History professor
Rob Lawson, and by Susan Elliott, museum
volunteer.
Cinema Sunday – April 10th
Visit the museum Sunday April 10th from
1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. and view Stanley Chilson
Films from the 1950s. See a bit of the Simple
Life of Mid Century Franklin on the museum’s
large movie screen. Stanley Chilson was
a photographer who chronicled life in Franklin
from the early 1930s through 1960. His
films are rare treasures, that give us a unique
view of how life once was in our town.
Kid’s Week - History Mysteries
during April School Vacation
The Museum will be open from 11a.m.-2
p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,
April 19th, 20th and 21st - School Vacation
Week. Open to the public and always free the
Museum hopes to encourage families looking
for something to do with the kids during
school vacation. Enjoy ‘History Mysteries’ by
guessing the age of a vintage American Flag
from our collection. Student visitors will be
encouraged to fill out an index card with their
guesses. Winners will receive a letter of commendation
and a small token of appreciation
for visiting and participating. View a Herbert
Hoover campaign poster and determine
how old it might be. There will even be a
question or two to try to stump our older visitors.
Enjoy portions of the animated series
Liberty’s Kids on the museum large viewing
screen. There’s lots to see and much to learn
from a visit to the Franklin Historical Museum.
Spend your vacation learning a little
bit of Franklin’s history.
The Museum is located at 80 West Central
Street, Franklin. Hours of operation are
Saturdays 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Sundays 1 p.m.–
4 p.m. and starting again in April, Thursday
evenings 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. There is handicap
access through the back door of the museum
with an elevator to the 1st floor exhibits. Visit
soon!
March 2, 1778 Celebrated at
Franklin Historical Museum
The Franklin Historical Museum enjoyed
a very successful celebration of the
town’s 238th birthday last month. On
Sunday, March 6th the sunshine and mild
weather brought many people out to enjoy
the day. Visitors were treated to coffee and
birthday cake as the browsed the museum
displays.
From the moment the doors opened at
1:00 until closing time at 4:00 the museum
was filled with first time visitors, as young
as 6 months old, and returning local patrons
alike. Museum volunteer hosts and
commission members Colette Ferguson
and Mary Olsson were kept busy answering
questions, serving refreshments and
even accepting donations. The museum’s
next celebration will be Sunday May 1st
when Franklin’s favorite son, Horace Mann
is remembered on his 220th birthday.

Martin Will Appear in Goodnight, Captain White at Hawthorne Hotel
If you haven’t seen Will Martin
recently, it might be because
his “Senator Daniel Webster” has
gone undercover trying to catch a
suspect. In Mark Stevick’s comedy-mystery,
Goodnight, Captain
White, it’s 1830 and all friends
and well-wishers are invited to
the Captain’s fabulous home for a
party. But it’s “lights out” for the
Captain and one of the guests
dunnit. Webster goes undercover
as servant only to reveal to the
murder suspects that he’s been
watching their every move, along
with the audience, who he will
deputize as the “committee of
vigilance”. Under the guidance
of Senator Webster, the audience
will vote on the murderer. There
are multiple endings based on the
audience vote.
Goodnight, Captain White is
based on an actual murder during
FSPA Summer Theatre Auditions April 30th
Franklin School for the Performing
Arts (FSPA) will hold
placement auditions for FSPA
Summer Theater programs on
Saturday, April 30. Auditions will
begin at 2 p.m. for Grades 3-5;
2:30 for Grades 6-8; and 3 p.m.
for Grades 9-12. Students may
audition for the musical theater
favorite Bye Bye Birdie (Grades
8-12), an original parody Bye
Bye Bieber (Grades 3-8), and two
straight plays (Grades 3-7 and
Grades 8-12; plays to be chosen
based on enrollment). All students
will be cast in the productions.
Bye Bye Birdie and Bye Bye
Bieber will be presented at THE
BLACK BOX at the conclusion
of FSPA’s two-week musical
theater program, which runs
from August 8-19. The plays will
rehearse August 22-26, with a
performance at THE BLACK
BOX.
The Tony Award-winning
classic Bye Bye Birdie is good, oldfashioned
fun. When rock ‘n’ roll
idol Conrad Birdie is drafted into
the army, his manager hatches a
plan for a grand publicity stunt,
with Birdie giving one last kiss
to a chosen fan live on the Ed
Sullivan Show. A media circus
ensues, along with musical comedy
chaos, when Birdie descends
on Sweet Apple, Ohio, home of
contest winner Kim McAfee.
With book by Michael Stewart,
music by Charles Strouse, and
lyrics by Lee Adams, Bye Bye
Birdie features the toe-tapping hits
“Put on a Happy Face,” “Kids,”
and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do.” The
original FSPA musical comedy
Bye Bye Bieber is a parody by Nick
Paone, inspired by Bye Bye Birdie
and featuring pop music hits.
FSPA Summer Theater also
provides the opportunity for
hands-on immersion in a Broadway
Boot Camp, cabaret show,
and behind-the-scenes theater
design. The Cabaret week (July
25-29; Grades 5-12) focuses on
repertoire choices, song interpretation
and presentation, and
concludes with a cabaret style
revue at THE BLACK BOX.
A behind-the-scenes exploration
of theater design and production
also runs July 25-29 (Grades 7-12)
and includes staging, lighting,
costuming, sets and sound. New
this summer, Broadway Boot
Camp (August 1-3; Grades 5-12),
with guest artists Tyler Hanes
and Sara Jean Ford, features
dance workshops and coaching
on song interpretation and individual
performance skills. Currently
starring on Broadway as
Christine Daae in The Phantom of
the Opera, Sara Jean Ford was previously
featured in Broadway’s
How to Succeed in Business Without
Really Trying (Smitty), A Little Night
Music and Finian’s Rainbow. Tyler
Hanes’ extensive Broadway credits
include A Chorus Line (Larry),
Hairspray (Fender, Link Larkin),
Sweet Charity (Charlie), The Frogs
with Nathan Lane, The Boy from
Oz with Hugh Jackman, Urban
Cowboy and Oklahoma! (Jake).
In addition to Summer Theater
programs, FSPA offers ballet
intensives and one-week creative
camps, along with voice, instrumental
and dance classes. The
summer session runs from July
Which poets were the heartbeat and the spirit of contemporary
America in the decades of Dean Academy, Dean Junior College
and Dean College? In conjunction with the 150th anniversary of
Dean College, a course was developed this Spring to celebrate
150 years of American poetry, studying one poet in each decade
from 1865-2015. From the traditional American poets including
Longfellow, Dickinson and Whitman, through the journey of the
modernists including Carl Sandburg, Langston Hughes and Robert
Frost, to the souls of contemporary poets Alan Ginsberg, Robert
Bly, Jane Kenyon and others, students were immersed in the
voices of American poets and their lives. The lecture will feature
a multi-media presentation on the poets and poetry in the course,
and an historical backdrop on and off the Dean campus.
Franklin Big Y Bagger Heads to
Vegas National Competition
By Christopher Tremblay
Having worked in the supermarket
industry since he was in
high school Frankie Ciavattone
was caught by surprised when his
employer of the past four years,
Big Y World Class Market in
Franklin, asked him to represent
the store in the Massachusetts
State Bagging Competition and
for the past two years the Bellingham
resident has represented
the state at the National Grocers
Association Best Bagger Competition
at the Mirage Hotel in Las
Vegas, Nevada.
“Although I had bagged my
way through high school, I was a
little nervous about entering the
competition,” Ciavattone said.
“There is a lot that goes into it;
you have to be fast, equally distribute
the weight between three
bags and follow proper bagging
procedures like no glass on the
corners, no cans on top of one
another and no bread on the bottom.”
Under the guidance of Customer
Service Manager Laura
Attwood, his timer and motivator,
Ciavattone began to practice
his bagging techniques with a
make shift station at the Franklin
store. Prior to the event last year
Pepsi, the corporate sponsor of
the competition, had sent out the
list of items that the participants
would be bagging at the completion.
“Once I saw my times starting
to come down and my weights
distributed equally amongst
the three bags I felt good about
chances,” he said.
In order to earn his spot in
Vegas Ciavattone had to go up
against 24 other baggers for the
State Title. Each bagger would
have to participate in 5 heats
against 5 other competitors. The
top five times would go up against
one another one final time for the
chance to represent Massachusetts.
Ciavattone has been able to
beat out all of his competitors to
earn that all expenses paid trip to
the City of Sin.
“That first year I was really
nervous, but then I got a few texts
from my Big Y supporters and
family and it eased my mind,”
the state champ said. “Once the
competition started I felt right at
home.”
Last year Ciavattone finished
fifth overall at the National
Grocers Association Best Bagger
Competition taking home
$1,000. Unfortunately he didn’t
finish as well this year.
“Things were set up a little
different this year (less time to
prepare once we got there and no
product info. was given to us),”
Ciavattone said. “I just made
this year about having fun with
the competition instead of all the
stress.”
Although Ciavattone and his
entourage have just returned
from the competition in Nevada,
the Big Y employee, who will be
graduating from Johnson and
Wales University with a degree
in Sports Entertainment
and Event Management
later this year, is unsure if
he’ll go for the three-peat.
Whether he does or not he
has made a lot of friends
throughout the country by
taking part in the competition.
Franklin Big Y’s Frankie
Ciavattone’s great bagging
skills sent him to Las Vegas
for the second time in a row
this year for the National
THE BLACK BOX to Feature
Bands of Roy and Madden
The Chick Magnets & Ben Gardner’s
Boat to Unite Again Under One Roof, April 8
By J.D. O’Gara
Did you know your local Rep.
rocks out on guitar and that your
local car dealer has been playing
keyboard for most of his life?
This month, on April 8 at THE
BLACK BOX, Rep. Jeff Roy’s
band, Ben Gardner’s Boat, and
Barry Madden’s (of Franklin
Ford) band, The Chick Magnets,
will play together for a fun night
out.
Last summer, Raye Lynn
Mercer, director of the Franklin
School for the Performing Arts,
approached me. I had heard
Jeff Roy had a band as well. At
the time she said, ‘I’d like to get
a couple people here and do a
night, like a cabaret night with
two different bands.’”
That night actually took place
on November 13, which, unfortunately,
turned out to be the
same night of the Paris terror attacks.
“That kind of put a tough
spin on it, but we still managed to
pull close to 100 people in,” says
Madden. “Everyone seemed to
have a lot of fun. When we finished
the night, Alan Mercer said
to me, ‘Let’s do this again.’”
“It was a lot of fun,” says Rep.
Jeff Roy. “It was the first time we
had played with another band.
Neither one had heard the other
band play, so we were a little uncertain,
but both bands complemented
one another. It was four
hours of nonstop music. At end
of the show, both bands got up
together and played a couple of
songs. It was a tremendous experience.”
The two bands are very different.
Ben Gardner’s Boat is a
group of five who have played
together since the 1990s, four of
whom went to high school together,
including two from Milford,
one from Uxbridge, one
Local businessman Barry Madden and local Representative Jeff Roy will
once again rock the house at THE BLACK BOX on April 8.
from Framingham and Roy, from
Franklin.
While Roy’s band centers on
guitar, Madden’s 7-piece group,
most of whom play other instruments,
including brass, does a lot
of Rhythm and Blues and older
rock and roll, including songs
Madden calls “a lost jukebox selection.”
Madden, who’s been with his
group for two and a half years,
says he plays for the joy of doing
it. “I had my first rock and roll
band before I had a driver’s license,”
he says. “My Dad, Jack
Madden, before he went into
the car business, was a guitar
player in a big band, a 12-piece
orchestra along the genre of
Glenn Miller, and he had us all
take music lessons when we were
young. I started when I was 5
years old and have been playing
piano since then.”
Madden says making music
“gives me tremendous enjoyment
and tremendous stress release.
It’s an alter ego to what I’m
doing during the day. Rock and
roll keeps you very young.”
Similarly, Roy, who says he
picked up his first instrument as
a second grader and began as
a cello player, has played guitar
since high school. His band
mainly plays for charity events,
such as Best Buddies, the Pan
Mass Challenge and school functions,
but they get together every
“It’s cathartic, getting together
to make music,” says Roy, “I tell
people I wish more people in
government would think like
orchestras do. The violins complement
what the cellos do. Everyone
works together to make
the others look good.”
Franklin Police
Hires New Officer
Chief of Police Stephan H. Semerjian is pleased to announce
the hire of a new Franklin Police Officer bringing
the Departments sworn police officer number to 46. After
an extensive background investigation which included education,
financial and personal character components of
all potential candidates John F. Flynn IV has been offered
employment as a police officer by the Town of Franklin.
Flynn is a long time Franklin resident graduating from
the Franklin High School and Westfield State University.
Flynn was one of 270 interested candidates who took the
first non-civil service department administered entrance
examination in January of 2014.
Flynn will begin his rigorous 26 week Basic Police
Recruit Training at the Massachusetts Police Training
Council’s Plymouth facility this month. Upon successful
completion of all required courses of study Flynn will then
report to the Franklin station for the beginning of a 10-
week on-the-job Field Officer Training component with
veteran Franklin Police Officers as his mentors and teachers.
After successful completion of his field training Flynn
will be given his duty assignment as a full-time Franklin
Police Officer.
Tri-County Rolls Out Summer
Camp Offerings
The high school’s summer
program, formerly known
as “Summer Camps at Tri-
County”, underwent a rebranding
this winter and is now
known as “Tri-County Summer
STEAM Camp”. School administrators
felt adding the word
STEAM, which stands for Science,
Technology, Engineering,
Arts, and Mathematics, would
better encompass the true nature
of the program offerings.
“Tri-County Camps are
unique because each one was
developed by experts in the industry
and aligns with required
skills for entry-level employment
in each of the industries represented.
Campers will work in
laboratories that closely mimic
the real world workplace and
will perform tasks that are not
only challenging, but fun,” explained
Jean George, Director
of Vocational Education at Tri-
County.
Tri-County’s licensed teachers
use their industry expertise to
teach campers about everything
from Engineering Technology to
Cosmetology. During the weeklong
camps, students will learn
how to program a video game,
build like an engineer, or cook
like a chef. These creative activities
allow campers to hone valuable
STEAM skills during the
summer months.
“STEAM Camp at Tri-
County will get kids excited
about learning in an environment
that doesn’t feel like
‘school’,” said Jean George.
“Summer is the best time to
delve deeper into something that
truly interests each student, and
our camps will not disappoint!”
Several of Tri-County’s most
popular camps, including Minecraft
Camp and Engineering
Camp, will make a comeback
this year. New offerings include
Cyber Camp and Kerbal Space
Program Camp. Full camp descriptions
are available on the
high school’s website.
Camps will be offered in five,
one-week sessions beginning on
July 18 and ending on August
19. The cost of each camp will
be $210. Enrollment in each
program is limited to students
entering grades 6, 7, and 8 in
September 2016. Students living
in the Tri-County District
are given preference for enrollment.
Early registration is highly
recommended as the camps are
expected to fill up. All programs
are subject to adequate enrollment.
A completed registration
form and payment in full must
be received in order to be registered.
Two Shows in April
Give your home the gift its been dreaming of
“We had thought about a kitchen updated for a very long time. After getting
a price for cabinet refacing, we put it off because of the high price–at least
$8,000 for cabinet refacing, plus $90/ft. for new countertops...$10,000 at least,
and around $16,000 for new ones. Through Cabinet Depot, we were able to
get everything new, including a nice deep sink...we love the new kitchen.
“Margaret was very nice and knowledgable, as was Scott in getting it done
in a short period of time, And it looks great!”
Billy Novick and Guy Van
Duser, April 9
Billy Novick and Guy Van
Duser perform at the Circle of
Friends Coffeehouse on Saturday,
April 9th. “Elegant.” “Riveting.”
“Soulful.” “Classic mastery.”
These are a few of the terms that
have been used to describe the
unique and stunning swing-jazz
music of acoustic guitarist Guy
Van Duser and clarinetist Billy
Novick. This concert is part of
Guy and Billy’s “I Can’t Believe
We’ve Survived” tour celebrating
40 years of performing together!
They have performed in concerts,
clubs and festivals all over
North America and Europe. You
also may have heard them as frequent
guests of “Prairie Home
Companion,” NPR’s “All Things
Considered.”
Their music combines two
perfectly suited musical personalities.
It is based around Guy’s
innovative finger-style guitar wizardry,
and his uncanny ability to
play bass lines, chords and melodies
all at the same time. With his
daring imagination, breathtaking
technique, and his wonderful
musicality, Guy has become an
inspiration for guitarists all over
the world.
Novick’s ever-inventive and
soulful clarinet playing provides
the ideal complement to Guy’s
guitar. With his vast knowledge
of the classic jazz era, his dazzling
improvising skills, and his
entertaining vocals, Novick is
able to both add a melodic and
dynamic spark to Guy’s guitar.
The duo can play any piece from
their huge repertoire- an obscure
Ellington tune, a Gershwin classic,
a complex Jelly Roll Morton
arrangement, or perhaps one of
the their originals- and immediately
have it sound their own.
Forever Young is a six piece
band that performs the best of
Neil Young’s acoustic and electric
songs! Forever Young takes you
back, gets you singing and dancing,
and puts those Neil Young
songs in your head to linger long
after the show!
All of the musicians performing
in Forever Young are staples
of the Rhode Island music scene
and veterans of many national
and regional tours. In addition,
they are all fans and have been
influenced by the music of Neil
Young. Drawing on his 40+ year
career, the show highlights many
of Young’s popular songs and a
few of the more obscure numbers.
The show is presented with
the full six-piece band doing
both the acoustic and electric
songs that Neil Young is famous
for. The show is reminiscent of
the “Four Way Street” live album
recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash
and Young and of Neil Young
with his many back-up bands.
National Tournament Preview
After capturing the NJCAA
Division II District N Championship,
the Dean College women’s
basketball team was selected as
the 12th seed in the NJCAA Division
II National Tournament,
playing fifth seed, Owens CC
(Ohio) on Wednesday, March
16, 2016. Owens was currently
ranked 5th in the latest NJCAA
National Poll and recorded a
26-6 record, winning the District
I Tournament, 71-69 over Cincinnati
State. Dean, currently
ranked 19th in the poll, defeated
Union County College of New
Jersey in the District N Tournament
to qualify for the its first
national tournament.
On March 16, the Bulldogs
hung tough, but Owens went on
a run late in the fourth quarter
that Dean could not answer and
they lost their first round game,
64-57. Leading at every quarter,
the Bulldogs went cold in the
fourth quarter, scoring only 5
points in the last seven minutes,
when they held a 52-47 lead.
As of our publication date,
the team was scheduled to meet
Waubonsee (26-8) CC in the
consolation round on March 17.
Waubonsee lost to the #4 seeded
Kansas City CC, 72-53 in their
first-round matchup.
The Dean Women’s basketball
program under Head Coach
Grahm Smith have won three
consecutive Region XXI (New
England) titles under his watch.
This year they have set the school
record for victories (24) and also
a school record for most consecutive
Region championships (3).
In his three years at Dean, the
women have a 57-17 record.
This year, the freshman have
carried the load, as Vianah Smith
and Denisha Gardener led the
team in scoring and rebounding,
respectively. Smith averaged 17.1
points per game and 3.5 assists
per game, while Gardener averaged
12.3 rebounds per game
and was second on the team in
scoring. Freshmen Fataya Larry
and Chelsea Johnson round out
the newcomers who have been
the main cogs for the Bulldogs,
with Larry averaging 10.5 rebounds
per game and 9.5 points
per game, with Johnson being
more of an outside threat, averaging
8.8 points.
S.A.F.E. Coalition Update
By J.D. O’Gara
The S.A.F.E. Coalition continues
to make strides, according
to Rep. Jeff Roy, elated that the
Governor Baker recently signed
legislation regarding opioids.
“I was at the bill signing for
the Opioid legislation. That’s a
huge component,” he says. Having
the S.A.F.E. Coalition working
with folks here in our area
has opened up my eyes to things
I never thought I would see. This
important piece of legislation is
exemplified by the S.A.F.E. Coalition.”
Roy says the group has “a viable
governance now, offices and
a 501 c3 application that has
been presented. The group is
working on creating drop-in centers
which will provide a one-stop
Franklin Art Association to
Feature Artist Greenfield
The Franklin Art Association
will meet on Wednesday, April
6. from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at
the Franklin Senior Center, 10
Daniel McCahill Street. Refreshments
and socialization will begin
at 6:30. The program will feature
a demo, from guest artist Marla
Greenfield who will do a water
color. Meetings are free and
to Cope, lawyers, people trained
in Narcan, counselors and more.
That is being funded, in part, by
the $50,000 grant Franklin received
from DA Morrissey, but
some funding, says Roy, is coming
from private fundraising.
One fundraiser will take place
on April 3.
“We’re doing a musical/
speaking event at the BLACK
BOX, featuring Mike Zito, nationally
known country and
western singer,” says Roy. “It will
take place from 5 p.m. well into
the night. It’s acoustic storytelling
set on his own recovery, and we’ll
have some speakers coming in
during that time period.”
Roy says there will be no
charge to get into the show, but
“donations will gratefully be accepted.”
Now that the opiate legislation
has been signed into law,
Roy says S.A.F.E. is hoping to
“get some of the area politicians
to come in and talk about what
bill provides how we arrived at it
and what we will do moving forward.
We will also do a thing on
marijuana and the petition coming
up. It’s an ambitious agenda,
but I think these programs are
well received.”
Roy refers to February, a
month in which S.A.F.E. featured
not only Professor Robert Putnam,
but also former NBA and
recovering addict Chris Herren,
of the Herren Project, as speakers.
“Chris Herren probably
spoke to 2,400 people in that one
day, because 700 people showed
up to the event in the auditorium
and he held two programs in the
schools during the day.”
opened to the public.
Marla Greenfield became a
full time watercolor artist in 1998
after retiring from a 15-year career
in the investment business.
She was drawn to watercolors
because of their transparency
and luminosity. Painting things
she finds beautiful, peaceful and
calming, she strives primarily to
depict the beauty of light in her
art with all of its variations in
Legislature Passes Substance Addiction Legislation to
Enhance Continuum of Care and Prevention Efforts
that recovery is possible!
He will play an acoustic “storytellers set” followed by a full band
concert. The evening will also feature various speakers from the
No Private Mortgage Insurance Loans
New
Low Rate
The Massachusetts Legislature
passed substance addiction
legislation that enhances
intervention, prevention and education
efforts, including the creation
of a framework to evaluate
and treat patients who present in
emergency rooms with an apparent
overdose.
This new practice, which
will be covered by insurance, is
designed to ensure the proper
assessment and discharge of
patients who seek voluntary
treatment. If a patient refuses
treatment, information on health
and community resources will
be provided. This framework
reflects the 2012 University of
Miami Medical School findings
that voluntary treatment is more
effective and affordable than involuntary
commitment.
“This bill has the ability to
make a profound impact on people’s
lives. We’re engaging the entire
healthcare ecosystem – from
patients to prescribers to providers
to pharmaceutical companies
and insurance companies
– to aid in education and prevention,”
said Senator Karen E.
Spilka (D-Ashland), Chair of the
Senate Committee on Ways and
Means. “Thank you to my colleagues
and all of the individuals,
families and advocates who came
forward to share their stories for
working together on a holistic approach
to reverse the course of
the opioid epidemic that affects
all of our communities.”
The bill limits first-time opiate
prescriptions to seven days
for adults and all opiate prescriptions
for minors to seven days,
with exceptions for chronic pain
management, cancer and palliative
care. Practitioners must now
check the prescription monitoring
program (PMP) each time
they prescribe any opiate and
make a corresponding note in
the patient’s medical records.
From its discussions with
numerous stakeholders and recovery
groups, the Legislature
recognizes the importance of
empowering individuals as they
grapple with addiction. As a result,
this bill establishes a nonopiate
directive form, allowing
patients to include a notation in
their records that they shall not
be offered opiates. It also provides
the option for patients, in
consultation with their doctors,
to request a lesser amount than
indicated on the script; however,
this language is permissive and
pharmacists may use their discretion.
In an effort to build upon
current prevention efforts, the
legislation updates current law
requiring all public schools to
have a policy regarding substance
abuse education by directing
schools to report their
plans to the Department of Elementary
and Secondary Education
(DESE). DESE will then
consult with the Department of
Public Health (DPH) to provide
recommendations that will assist
schools and ensure they are providing
effective and up-to-date
education. Additional education
materials will be provided to all
student-athletes.
Schools will annually be required
to conduct a verbal substance
abuse screening in two
grade levels. These screenings
are subject to appropriate ages
and include an opt-out provision
for students and parents. Additionally,
school districts implementing
alternative substance
use screening policies may opt
out of the verbal screening tool
requirement.
To ensure that unused medications
are safely collected
and disposed of, this legislation
requires manufacturers of
controlled substances in Massachusetts
to participate in either a
drug stewardship program or an
alternative plan as determined by
DPH.
Over the past few years, the
Legislature’s efforts related to
substance addiction have focused
on behavioral health and the
prevalence of co-occurring disorders.
This legislation requires
the Health Policy Commission
to conduct a study on access to
dual-diagnosis treatment in the
Commonwealth for children,
adolescents and adults. To help
Excellence in Cataract Surgery:
What You Should Expect in 2016
By: Roger M. Kaldawy,
M.D., Milford Franklin Eye
Center
Cataract surgery is by far
the most common surgery performed
in the United States.
With advanced technology and
highly skilled surgeons, modern
cataract surgery should be
a rather quick outpatient and a
minimal risk procedure. If you
are considering cataract surgery,
your expectations should
not only be to improve your vision,
reduce glare at night, see
brighter and more vivid colors
and improve your day to day
activities, but you should also be
given an opportunity to reduce
your dependence on glasses or
contacts and in many cases eliminate
this need. In 2016, many
choices exist on where to have
the surgery and by whom. What
is more confusing and potentially
misleading is that many
providers claim they are or provide
“the best” without defining
what their “best” means or
having their own definition of
the same. Here are the specific
questions to ask when you are
trying to select the ideal surgeon,
resources, experience, skills and
outcomes for cataract surgery.
Modern
Implants
Laser Technology
Cerec (same visit crown)
NORFOLK COUNTY DENTAL CARE
Trusted Since 1975
1. What type of anesthesia
am I going to get? With
modern cataract surgery,
most surgeries should be
completed under topical
anesthesia and local
sedation. Local sedation
means that the anesthesiologist
will give
you minimal sedation,
allowing you to recover
your activities after surgery
almost immediately
with little or no health
risk. Topical anesthesia
means that the surgery
eye becomes numb with
drops. No need for injections
and shots around or
behind the eye. Not using
shots eliminates the risk
of bleeding and serious
complications from the
shots. Ask your surgeon
if you will be given a shot
around your eye or not.
2. What are the risks? One
of the most dreaded risks
of cataract surgery is accidental
damage to the
posterior capsule, which
is the back wall of the
bag holding your cataract
lens. The best practices
have a rupture rate of 2
to 4 per thousand cases.
The source of this information
should be credible,
and ideally made
available by an independent
review committee in
a surgery center. Ask your
surgeon about his/ her
complication rate and
how is this monitored.
Does the surgeon have an
independent review committee
in his/ her center
to validate this rate?
3. What is the rate of infections
in your center?
Another potentially devastating
risk of cataract
surgery is an infection
inside the eye called
“endophthalmitis.” Ask
about the percentage of
patients getting this infection
in the center you
chose for your operation.
The source of this information,
again, should
be credible, and ideally
made available by an independent
review committee
inside the surgery
center.
4. Where will the surgery
be performed? Different
centers have different
equipment and
resources. For instance,
EYE
continued from page 20
Massachusetts has only
few centers offering bladeless
cataract surgery.
Bladeless laser assisted
surgery should be an option
if you want to reduce
dependence on glasses
and treat low grades of
astigmatism at the same
time as your cataract surgery.
This technology can
also soften the cataract if
it is dense and thick, allowing
a safer and better
outcome as it is the case
in a specific eye disease
called Fuch’s dystrophy.
Ask your Ophthalmologist
if he/ she is able to
offer this technology.
5. What type of advanced
technology is available
at the center? Larger
centers can often times
afford better technology.
For instance, a new
technology called ORA
can allow the surgeon to
adjust the power of the
lens implant placed in the
eye while you are having
the surgery. This is critical
if you had LASIK
before. This technology
has the added benefit to
reduce errors in the implant
power calculations
and improve chances of
reducing your need for
glasses after surgery. Ask
your surgeon is this technology
is available in his/
her center.
6. What type of implant am
I going to get? Different
lens implants can be used
during cataract surgery
with different materials,
quality and ability
to reduce your need for
glasses. A lower cost does
not always translate into
savings. Ask your surgeon
what type of implants
he/ she uses and why.
7. Will my need to wear
glasses be reduced? Cataract
surgery is a wonderful
opportunity to limit or
eliminate your need for
glasses. As the surgeon
removes the cataract,
there is an opportunity
to replace the cloudy lens
with a special high tech
implant able to achieve
this goal. The new bladeless
laser assisted surgery
offers the opportunity to
correct astigmatism at the
same time as the surgery,
allowing the lens implants
to correct for distance,
near and everything in
between. Ask your surgeon
if he/ she is able to
achieve this goal.
8. Will I have stitches? It
is ideal to eliminate the
need for stitches such as
the surgery is a no-stitch
surgery. Placing a stitch
can be complicated by
stitch induced astigmatism,
a foreign body sensation
and a broken and
irritating stitch.
9. What will be my vision
be on day 1 after the
surgery? One of the
measurements defining
quality of outcomes
after cataract surgery is
the quality of vision on
day 1 after the surgery.
Surgeons should strive to
make the vision correct to
as close to best as possible
on day 1. Ask your surgeon
how often is he/ she
achieving this outcome.
At Milford Franklin Eye
Center, Dr. Kaldawy is proud to
have been the first surgeon in the
area and among the first in Massachusetts
to offer bladeless laser
assisted cataract surgery, which
is offered at the top 5 teaching
hospitals in the nation. We
implant high quality premium
lenses only, with correction for
distance, near and everything
in between, and many cases
of astigmatism are no longer a
problem thanks to bladeless laser
surgery. Our percentage of posterior
capsule complications and
infections is one of the lowest in
the nation, measured by independent
sources, and we operate
in a state-of-the-art surgery
center in Waltham offering door
to door concierge service. This
center has two ORA machines
for better precision and less dependence
on glasses. All of our
surgeries are performed under
topical anesthesia, so only drops,
no need for shots and their risks
and no need for stitches. We are
proud to offer 2016 world class
outcomes closer to home.
Boyd – Small Stature, Big Player
By Christopher Tremblay
Too many, jokes or comments
about one’s small stature may
bother that individual, but Tri-
County’s Chris Boyd doesn’t let
the remarks bother him. Instead,
he uses it for motivation. The senior
left wing, who began skating
at the age of 2 and picked up his
first hockey stick around 4, finds
himself way below the national
average. The average male is
5’ 10” while the female is 5’ 5”;
Boyd stands at 5’ 4”; however,
opponents shouldn’t take his size
into consideration.
“I’m a very physical player
that has no problems going into
the corners,” he said. “I was always
hearing that that I didn’t
have what it took to play hockey,
those comments only pushed
me. Once I got going, then the
opposition realized that I was a
threat and had to pay attention
to where I was and what I was
doing on the ice.”
Between 8 and 13 years old
Boyd found himself playing
hockey for some select teams; it
was here that he realized despite
his height he was someone to
contend with on the ice.
“At that young age I continually
found myself leading my
team in points and goals. As this
continued to happen I came to
the conclusion that I was good,”
Boyd said. “It was when coaches
started telling me that I was talented
and would go far even at
5’4” that I actually believed it.”
Upon entering Tri-County
Boyd played his freshmen campaign
with the junior varsity
team, where he once again
would lead the team in scoring.
He also saw some time with the
varsity team but not enough to
do anything on the ice. During
his sophomore season he was
permanently planted on the varsity
team, but it was here that he
saw more time on the bench than
on the ice. His limited role found
him on the Cougars fourth line
where he netted only four points.
As a sophomore watching his
teammates skate around the ice,
Boyd found an insight to what
the skill level really was like on
the high school level.
“It really was a different experience
for me sitting on the
bench, the winger said. “But it
was one that opened my eyes to
the high school game and helped
me get better. It was here that I
realized that I had a lot of work
to do if I wanted to contribute to
this team, starting with my speed
and defensive skills.”
As a junior, he was paired with
senior Connor Harrington, who
Tri-County’s Chris Boyd was reluctant to take his jersey off at the end
of his final game, but he hopes to take his skills on the ice to junior
hockey.
notched 29 goals and 36 points
that campaign for the Cougars.
Boyd was able to finds the net
nine times that season, but it
was being on the same line with
Harrington that kick started his
game.
“The things that Connor was
able to do with puck really taught
me a lot,” he said. “That off-season,
I worked extremely hard to
not only get quicker to give me
more opportunities, but I worked
to improve the quickness of my
shot.”
Things seemed to work as
this season, his final as a Cougar,
Boyd found the back of the net
on 23 occasions, while setting
up another 12 goals; leading the
team in goals, assists and plus or
minus. The Cougar winger not
only plays on the first line, but
also lines up on the power play
and penalty kill.
NO JOB TOO SMALL
“Chris has great hockey
sense, probably the best I’ve ever
coached,” said TC Coach Mark
Spillane. “He may be short, but
he reads the play well.”
Despite making the Division 3
South Ice Hockey Tournament,
Boyd was not all that thrilled at
the Cougars results, a 5-1 loss to
Bishop Stang.
“I don’t think I have ever
been on a closer team. I loved
playing the game, but I also enjoyed
going to practice,” Boyd
said. “When the (tournament)
game ended I had a bad feeling;
I just sat in the locker room with
my jersey on, not wanting to take
it off. I knew that once I did, it
meant that my high school career
was over.”
Although his high school career
has come to an end, Boyd
believes that his hockey days are
not over just yet; he plans on
looking into some junior hockey
teams.
Hoop Fever – It’s Catchy!
The basketball season may have ended, but not for the 5th annual Hoop Fever Basketball
Camp. This program, for boys and girls ages 8-13, has been well accepted in all our neighboring
communities as a great opportunity for learning and enjoying basketball during April
school vacation. This year’s camp will begin Marathon Monday, April 18th, in the late afternoon
to allow for watching or attending the event. From Tuesday the 19th to Friday the 22nd,
the camp meets from 8:30 to 1:30. That includes a break for lunch except on Friday when we
have our annual Pizza and Award Party.
The program is designed so that youngsters learn the game, play it in competitive
situations and have a great time. Campers drill every day in the basics
of the game; from dribbling to passing, from rebounding to defense, all
designed to gain basketball concepts for better play and understanding
the game. Games are 3x3 games, allowing all players to be part of
every play. Everyone touches the ball and everyone experiences
the fun of playing! The staff are all coaches from the college
level to youth programs. They take their work seriously and
try to make all players appreciate and develop a love for the
game.
Own a Piece of Paradise
Ever dream of owning a
home in Florida? What if you
could own a home near Disney
and see return on your real estate
by using as a rental, with no
extra work on your part?
“We are only a couple of
miles from Disney World,” says
Matt Montalvo, who moved to
the Florida area from Central
Massachusetts 10 years ago.
“When we sell a home, we can
put owners into our vacation
rental program. Buyers have
an option where they can use it
strictly as a second home or rent
it out as a vacation home. We
oversee, maintain, manage and
market the property.”
Homes range in size from
2,000 to 20,000 square feet,
condominiums and town homes
perfect for retirees and vacation
homes for families to sprawling
estate homes for corporate executives.
All have private swimming
pools and are located in
golf resorts that feature golf,
water parks and even restaurants
among their amenities.
“All of them are professionally
managed and maintained,
beautiful luxury estate homes,”
says Montalvo.
vacation home. Check out 502
just 15 minutes to Disney.
“I must say, Matt has gone
beyond what I had experienced
with other realtors and also beiing
fromBoston, he could relate
to what I was looking for, not
just as a home, but as an investment.”
